Dana White says Ian Garry ‘lacks killer instinct’ after loss at UFC 330
White praised Garry as talented and classy, but said the latter has no place during a fight
Ian Machado Garry is tremendously talented. UFC CEO Dana White recognizes that after his competitive fight with Islam Makhachev at UFC 330. However, White thinks Garry might have squandered his chance to become champion.
White historically dislikes fighters who show camaraderie mid-fight. He’s long believed that such pleasantries should be kept before and after the bell sounds. So it’s no surprise that he frowned upon Garry’s reverence for Makhachev.
Saturday’s headliners embraced at the beginning of the final round. Most spectators, according to MMA Decisions, scored the bout dead even heading into Round 5. Makhachev finally wrangled Garry to the mat after largely failing to do so, and controlled his back long enough to secure the fight. White claims that Garry’s politeness, which reared its head earlier in the fight and throughout fight week, robbed him of crucial tenacity.
“I think Ian is a talented guy. If he had even an ounce of killer instinct, in that fifth round, you don’t come out and hug and shake hands,” White told reporters at the UFC 330 post-fight press conference. “That shit drives me crazy.”
“You come out in that fifth round with a flying knee and try to finish the fight. I think this is one of those fights where Ian will go back and watch and say, ‘F—, I wish I could do that over again.”
White praised Garry as a “classy” guy, but said it did the title challenger no favors on Saturday.
A finish would’ve been the only thing that could’ve rescued the fight for Garry. Though many viewers had it tied going into the final frame, two judges had awarded Makhachev three rounds. In defeating Garry, Makhachev broke Anderson Silva’s record for the longest UFC undefeated streak.

Anisimova looks to ‘thrive’ off crowd energy in Alex Eala match

MANILA, Philippines — World number 10 Amanda Anisimova is unfazed by Alex Eala’s massive crowd support ahead of their third-round duel at the Cincinnati Open in Ohio.
Despite playing on home turf, the ninth-seed American expects to see a stadium filled with more fans rallying behind the WTA Tour’s hottest draw in Eala.
Anisimova also sees herself thriving in the high-energy atmosphere, which was once described by four-time Grand Slam winner Naomi Osaka as “more like a basketball game” than a tennis match.

“She has a great fan base. And it looks like an incredible atmosphere every time she steps out to play a match. I’m really, really looking forward to it,” Anisimova said in the post-game show.
“I love a packed stadium and I love a good atmosphere. I’m sure it will be a great match, even though they will probably gonna be rooting more for her end. But I don’t mind it and I’ll try to thrive off of the energy.”
Anisimova and Eala clash late Monday night, with the winner projected to take on Wimbledon champion and sixth seed Linda Noskova in the round of 16.
After booting out Turkiye’s Zeynep Sonmez, 6-2, 6-3, Anisimova heaped praise on the Filipino star, who beat Romania’s Elena-Gabriela Ruse in the second round.

“I haven’t played her (Eala) before. She’s been having such an incredible season, an incredible year. [A] very great player with a lot of fans, so I’m really looking forward to that,” said Anisimova during the post-match interview.
The 24-year-old Anisimova is a four-time WTA Tour titlist, highlighted by a pair of Masters victories in Qatar and China last season. She also finished runner-up in the US Open and Wimbledon last year.
The former World No. 3 reached the quarterfinal of the Australian Open this season and in 2019, became the youngest French Open semifinalist at 17 years old.
Eala is playing her second straight WTA 1000 tournament in her North American swing, following a round-of-16 exit at the Canadian Open and a breakthrough title run in the Mubadala DC Open in Washington.

Why is the Community Shield not being played at Wembley?
The 2026 Community Shield is being played at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium for the first time in 20 years due to the match clashing with The Weeknd’s tour dates at Wembley.
The match between the Premier League champions and FA Cup winners, which this year pits Arsenal against Manchester City, is traditionally played at Wembley, but the iconic stadium was unavailable on Sunday 16 August “due to pre-planned concerts”, as revealed by the FA back in March.
The Weeknd is playing five dates at Wembley between 14 and 19 August, with “The Home of Football” being chosen to stage his London performances.
The forced change has brought the Community Shield back to the venue that hosted six editions between 2001 and 2006 while the new-look Wembley was under construction.
“We are absolutely delighted to be welcoming the FA Community Shield back to Principality Stadium,” said Welsh Rugby Union chief financial and operating officer Gavin Marshall. “This fixture has a special place in the stadium’s history and to be hosting it again for the first time in 20 years is a tremendously proud moment for everyone here.

“Principality Stadium has built its reputation on delivering world-class events and creating truly special occasions for fans, and this is no different.
“We know from experience the atmosphere this stadium generates when it is at capacity, and we are fully committed to ensuring supporters of both clubs have an unforgettable experience on 16 August. This is exactly the kind of occasion this stadium was made for, and we cannot wait to welcome everyone to Cardiff.”
Liverpool and Arsenal both lifted two titles during the match’s six-year stint in the Welsh capital, while Manchester United and Chelsea also triumphed in 2003 and 2005 respectively.
The 74,500-capacity Principality Stadium will also stage the opening match of Euro 2028, which is being co-hosted by England, the Republic of Ireland, Scotland and Wales.
Since returning to Wembley in 2007, the Community Shield has moved twice – to Villa Park in 2012 due to the Olympics and the King Power Stadium in 2022 as the national stadium hosted the Women’s European Championship final, which was won by the Lionesses.
The season’s “curtain-raiser” between Arsenal and City will take place five days before the Premier League campaign begins on Friday 21 August, which will see Mikel Arteta’s defending champions host newly-promoted Coventry.

Indian athletics team to hold camp in Japan ahead of Asian Games 2026 | Asian Games 2023
The Indian athletics team will undergo a short acclimatisation camp at the University of Tsukuba near Tokyo ahead of the Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya in Japan in September-October.
In June this year, the Sports Authority of India signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the University of Tsukuba to facilitate participation of Indian athletes, coaches, and sports scientists in specialised training and exchange programmes in Japan.
Tsukuba is around 80kms from Tokyo and 420km from Nagoya where the track and field events will be held from September 23 to 29.
The national team will leave for Japan after competing in the invitational Indian Athletics Final Series in New Delhi on September 10.
“The team will leave for Japan either on September 12 or 13 and will train at the University of Tsukuba to acclimatise to the conditions,” a top Athletics Federation of India (AFI) official told PTI.
Meanwhile, the Asian Games-bound Indian athletes, who were training at Jablonec in Czech Republic, are returning home in a day or two to have another short training stint at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar where the Indian Open World Athletics Silver Level Continental Tour event will be held on August 22.
A host of top Indian athletes are set to take part in the one-day event in Bhubaneswar, including the likes of Commonwealth Games medallist long jumper Murali Sreeshankar, women’s national record holder long jumper Ancy Sojan, ace 100m hurdles runner Jyothi Yarraji, top sprinters Gurindervir Singh and Animesh Kujur as well as javelin thrower Kishore Jena.
Two-time Olympic medallist javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra is not expected to feature in Bhubaneswar as he is competing at the Lausanne Diamond League on August 21.
‘AFI has sent Asian Games team list to IOA’
=================================
An AFI official said that the federation has sent the Asian Games team to the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) as soon as the National Inter-State Championships ended in Bhubaneswar on June 28. The team picked by the AFI is more than 68 who represented the country in the previous Asian Games in Hangzhou, China, in 2023.
“We have sent the Asian Games team to the IOA on the night of June 28 itself, just after the end of events at the National Inter-State Championships,” the official said.
“We have picked more than 72 athletes. We have done our part of job.

How Bangladesh followed Virat Kohli’s template to humble Australia in Darwin
NEW DELHI: It was fitting that Mominul Haque hit the winning runs for Bangladesh’s nine-wicket win over Australia in Darwin. The diminutive southpaw had also struck the winning run at Mount Maunganui against New Zealand in 2022, which was another historic Test win for Bangladesh. It was during Mominul’s captaincy that the fast-bowling revolution started in Bangladesh, and now it is bearing fruit.Interestingly, it was the words of wisdom from former India captain Virat Kohli in 2019, after the pink-ball Test in Kolkata, which fuelled the changes in Bangladesh cricket.During the post-match press conference, Kohli had talked about India and the BCCI’s measures to push Test cricket forward. He had talked about “total commitment” from the players but also reiterated the importance of matching that demand with improved contracts for Test players in the country.
I think every cricket nation that has done that are invariably the ones that are playing strong Test cricket. Their hearts and minds are totally in sync with keeping Test cricket on top. You can’t tell the players you have to be committed to playing Test cricket but contractually we won’t do anything for you.
Virat Kohli after India;s pink-ball Test against Bangladesh in 2019
“If you look at our contracts system as well, a lot of importance has been given to Test cricketers. I think all things have to coincide and I think every cricket nation that has done that are invariably the ones that are playing strong Test cricket. Their hearts and minds are totally in sync with keeping Test cricket on top. You can’t tell the players you have to be committed to playing Test cricket but contractually we won’t do anything for you. Because we’re professional players, we earn a living as well. As long as Test cricket is displayed or said to be the most important format, everything around that has to happen in the same manner,” Kohli had said.“You have so many people coming up and playing white-ball cricket but Test specialists are very difficult to find. Only someone who has gone through the grind for five-six years in first-class cricket, and are still continuing to do so, are the ones that eventually make it. So yeah, the players need to be taken care of but at the same time the players need to respond in a manner that they’re giving 120 percent every Test match. I think as long as teams are willing to do that, and cricket boards are willing to do that, Test cricket will always be on top.”
Darwin, Aug 16 (IANS) Bangladesh has completed one of the most stunning upsets in men’s Test cricket history on Sunday by thrashing top-ranked Australia by nine wickets in the series opener at Marrara Oval on Sunday.
The bruises from that pink-ball Test did not sit well with Mominul, but he learnt the lesson from the then captain of the World No. 1 Test team. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) introduced contracts for Test cricketers, while Mominul, along with Habibul Bashar, the former Bangladesh captain and current chief selector, who was then a member of the selection panel, charted out plans to change the National Cricket League (NCL), the country’s biggest four-day competition. The BCB told curators across the country to leave six millimetres (mm) of grass on the pitches, but it used to die down after Day 1, and then the spinners would call the shots. Mominul did not lose hope. He pushed the board to leave a slightly longer grass cover of eight to 10 mm, and they started playing with Duke balls.
I think a lot of credit should go to then captain Mominul Haque. I still remember in first-class games he used to make sure that the fast bowlers bowled the maximum overs.
Tamim Iqbal | BCB president
The major change was also inspired by Virat Kohli’s fast-bowling cartel. In Ishant Sharma, Mohammed Shami, Jasprit Bumrah, Umesh Yadav and Bhuvneshwar Kumar, India had a good crop of fast bowlers, and even the third pacer was as relentless as their strike bowlers.Taking a leaf out of Virat Kohli’s captaincy, Mominul had the BCB instruct all eight first-class teams that they must play with three pacers in every match.Mominul’s persistence with this strategy surprised many, including former Bangladesh captain and current Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president Tamim Iqbal.

“I think a lot of credit should go to then captain Mominul Haque,” Tamim had told TimesofIndia.com earlier this year.“I still remember in first-class games he used to make sure that the fast bowlers bowled the maximum overs. I remember one first-class game because he and I used to play for the same team, and I went to him and said we could easily bowl spinners. He said, ‘No, if I do not make these fast bowlers bowl now, how are they going to learn? Regardless of whether they are doing well or not, we need fast bowlers in the national team and they need to bowl as much as possible.‘“I think he was the main guy who changed the fast bowling unit. He gave maximum importance to the fast bowlers and made sure that they bowled maximum overs in domestic and international cricket. When the fast bowlers started getting success, domestic players and young kids started believing that even in Bangladesh you can become a fast bowler, get success and become a superstar. A lot of credit must go to Mominul Haque and, along the way, coaches like Allan Donald and Ottis Gibson also played a big part.“

Mominul’s decision to give young pacers extended spells included Hasan Mahmud, who would go on to produce a stunning performance against Australia in Darwin on Thursday, etching his name into one of the most memorable days in Bangladesh’s Test history.
Bangladesh in control of first Test against Australia after pacer Hasan Mahmud’s six wicket haul
Hasan delivered a masterclass in red-ball bowling, displaying remarkable discipline with his lines and lengths throughout the day. His persistence was rewarded with career-best figures of 6-55. He followed it up with 3-56 and was rightly adjudged player of the match. The three-pacers gambit worked. And with the likes of Hasan Mahmud, Taskin Ahmed, Ebadot Hossain, Shoriful Islam, Mustafizur Rahman and the 150kph speedster Nahid Rana in their ranks, Bangladesh’s fast-bowling cartel is scary and on the rise. And it all started during Virat Kohli’s press conference at Eden Gardens, which propelled the revolution in Bangladesh cricket.

Katie Taylor names the top 5 best female fighters
Katie Taylor has named her top five fighters in women’s boxing as she approaches her last dance at Croke Park, Dublin, on September 5.
The 40-year-old has crafted an illustrious career and is now bidding to become a three-time undisputed champion, taking on Flora Pili for all four major super-lightweight titles.
This follows the culmination of her iconic trilogy with Amanda Serrano, with the Irish phenom remaining unbeaten against her Puerto Rican rival in July 2025.
But despite sharing 30 rounds of ferocious action with her fellow all-time great, Taylor did not mention Serrano in her top five list of active female fighters.
Perhaps this is because the 37-year-old is closing in on retirement but, even so, most would argue that Serrano remains one of the leading operators in women’s boxing.
While having become a seven-division world champion, she is now attempting to further cement her greatness by trumping Christy Martin’s record (32) for the most knockouts in women’s boxing history.
Taylor, however, has named Mikaela Mayer, Alycia Baumgardner, Ellie Scotney, Gabriela Fundora and Claressa Shields as her top five current female fighters.
While excluding herself, too, she offered her list – in ascending order – with no mention of Serrano during a pound-for-pound discussion with DAZN.

Many would agree, though, that Shields, a three-weight undisputed champion, is at the very top, or should at least be mentioned in the same breath as Taylor.
The only factor going against Shields, it seems, is her overall level of opposition, as evidenced by the fact that she is heavily favoured to defeat Kaye Scott this weekend.

Carl Froch sums up his feelings on Anthony Joshua vs Tyson Fury taking place in the US
The debate as to where Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua’s long-awaited grudge match should take place is continuing to rage on, and Carl Froch has made his feelings on the matter clear.
Fury and Joshua have been linked to a showdown with one another for the best part of a decade, but it has taken until their twilight years for the pair to finally agree to a fight, which is sure to be a career finale for at least one of the two-time heavyweight world champions.
Despite being continuously labelled – and presumably billed – as the biggest fight in British boxing history, it seems as though New York is the most likely host for the event, with Netflix insisting that the clash heads to Madison Square Garden.
Now, Matchroom Promoter Eddie Hearn has threatened to call the fight off if a premature announcement for the venue is made without allowing him to renegotiate figures.
On his YouTube channel, Froch on Fighting, four-time super-middleweight world champion Froch declared that the scrap should happen on British soil.
“We talked previously about it maybe happening in the States. Which I said is terrible for the British fans, it’s out of order. It is an all-British affair and it is arguably the biggest fight in British boxing history. It’s a big one and it should be on British soil.”
It had seemed as though Fury-Joshua would go ahead in November, but prolonged discussions could push the card into early 2027, as Hearn attempts to convince those involved to relocate.

Devdutt Padikkal opens up on long wait for India Test comeback
Devdutt Padikkal marked his return to Test cricket in style, scoring his maiden century in the format during India’s first innings of the Galle Test against Sri Lanka. The Karnataka left-hander produced a composed yet attacking knock, handling the challenging conditions with maturity and putting pressure on the Sri Lankan bowlers. Padikkal was particularly effective against spinners Prabath Jayasuriya and Keshara Nuwantha, combining caution with well-timed aggression. The 26-year-old came into the Test on the back of a century against SLC XI in the warm-up game and continued his strong run of form when it mattered most.Padikkal may have found it difficult to break into India’s playing XI had Sai Sudharsan been fit and available for the series. However, his century has strengthened his case for a continued run at No.3.Speaking after the close of play on Day 1, Padikkal revealed that determination was key to getting through a physically demanding innings in Galle, where the heat and humidity took a toll.“In this knock, determination for me was playing through that tiredness and fatigue that I was feeling, especially towards the third session. I think it was getting really hot, and we were losing a lot of fluid. We were sweating all the time. So it was really important that I was determined enough to keep going and keep pushing forward,” Padikkal said in a video shared by BCCI.The batter also stressed the importance of maintaining concentration on a surface that did not make batting easy.“It wasn’t the easiest of wickets to bat on. I think we had to make sure that we didn’t play too many last shots. We had to make sure that we kept our minds in the game as long as possible because, like I said, again, when you get tired, it’s easy to lose that discipline, and I think as a team we did that well today,” he added.Padikkal shared a 150-run partnership with KL Rahul before Rahul retired hurt on 77 after suffering from cramps. For Padikkal, the century was particularly significant as he had not played a Test for India since 2024 and had waited almost two years for another opportunity. His return to the side came after a prolific run across domestic cricket and the IPL. Strong performances in the Ranji Trophy and Vijay Hazare Trophy, along with his IPL form, helped him force his way back into the reckoning.Padikkal admitted that the long wait had tested his patience but also gave him time to improve his game.“Patience for me, I think it was more to do with what I’ve gone through before this game. I think my last Test was in 2024. So it’s been a long time coming, and I’ve had to patiently wait, look on from the outside. It’s never easy. But at the same time, it gave me time to really work on my game and perfect things that needed perfecting. And I’m really glad that all that hard work came to effect today. It feels great,” said Padikkal. The left-hander also revealed that he felt nervous as he approached the three-figure mark, but eventually managed to overcome the pressure.“I was a bit nervous towards the end when I got closer to it, but I think that’s part of it, and I’m really happy to get over that. Especially this ground, I think even when we came here with the India SI, I got a few runs and even in the warm-up game, obviously I got some runs. So yeah, I guess it’s a really special place for me and glad to keep it going,” he added.

Brown stands out for Cowboys with two TD catches in win over Seahawks
SEATTLE — Rookie Camden Brown had two touchdown catches, including a diving, one-handed snag, to help lead the Dallas Cowboys past the Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks 17-7 on Saturday night in the preseason opener for both team.
Brown caught a 39-yard pass from Sam Howell in the second quarter to put Dallas up 10-7. On the first drive of the third quarter, Brown snared a 2-yard fade from Joe Milton in the back left corner of the end zone.
“Really good day,” said Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer. “He’s got to keep stacking them, but he’s been doing it.”
An undrafted free agent who started his career at Auburn before transferring to Georgia Southern, Brown has stood out throughout training camp. The 6-foot-2, 204-pound wide receiver has made good use of his frame, and demonstrated on Saturday he can also do so in an NFL game.
“The game’s not too big for him,” Schottenheimer said. “He does it every day in practice, we see it all the time.”
Milton, who’s entering his third pro season and second with Dallas, was impressive in his bid to be the Cowboys’ backup quarterback behind Dak Prescott. The 2024 sixth-round draft pick completed six of his first eight passes against the Seahawks’ backup cornerbacks, and finished 12 of 15 for 107 yards and the TD to Brown.
Howell, who is competing with Milton for the Cowboys’ No. 2 job, was 8 of 12 for 94 yards and his touchdown pass to Brown.
“They just hung in there and made the throws when they had to make them,” Schottenheimer said about his quarterbacks, “and they were both very efficient.”
With Sam Darnold sitting out, Seattle rotated its backup quarterbacks throughout the night. Drew Lock led the Seahawks on a 13-play, 80-yard scoring drive to open the game. It was capped by a 5-yard touchdown catch by Montorie Foster Jr.
“It was a tight window, too,” Foster said. “Shoutout to Drew. On that plant, I knew the ball was going to be right there. So, I was just ready for it.”
Brandon Aubrey converted a 29-yard field goal to cut Seattle’s lead to 7-3 early in the second quarter. The Seahawks responded with a 15-play drive, but Jason Myers pushed a 45-yard attempt wide right before Brown caught his first touchdown pass.
Jalen Milroe, currently entrenched as Seattle’s third-string quarterback, was 5 of 8 for 36 yards. Lock was 9 of 13 for 40 yards and a touchdown.
Cowboys running back Jaydon Blue, who is competing with Phil Mafah to be Javonte Williams’ backup, was stifled by Seattle’s defense. Blue had 19 yards on eight carries.
George Holani, one of the few healthy Seahawks running backs, paced Seattle with 12 carries for 42 yards. Zach Charbonnet, Emanuel Wilson and 2026 first-round pick Jadarian Price – all of whom could be options for Seattle this season at running back – sat out with injuries.
Tyrice Knight led the Seahawks with 10 tackles, all in the first half. Knight, who has 145 tackles over the last two seasons, is pleased with his progress since the Seahawks selected in the fourth round in 2024.
“Probably the biggest step for me is just being more decisive,” Knight said. “Just like how I was more (decisive) at UTEP, bringing that same game to the NFL and then just playing downhill more and being ahead of the play.”
Curtis Robinson paced the Cowboys with eight tackles.
Foster had a team-high five catches for 36 yards for Seattle. Malik Davis ran for 39 yards on seven carries for Dallas.
Seattle’s Rashad Rochelle had a 52-yard punt return in the third quarter.
The teams combined for 21 penalties and 174 penalty yards.
Milroe, who was a college teammate of Terrion Arnold for three seasons at Alabama, supported Seattle’s decision to enter an agreement with the cornerback. Arnold is facing eight felony charges stemming from allegations he orchestrated the abduction and beating of three men in February.
“That’s my dog. I’m very happy that he’s going to be a Seahawk,” Milroe said. “I think now, it’s just showing him the way of how we do things. And, that’s the move-forward process.”
Seahawks: Tackle Amari Kight (leg) left in the second quarter and put ice on his lower leg on the sideline. Edge rusher Jared Ivey went into the injury tent in the third quarter, but returned.
Cowboys: Mafah (chest) exited in the third quarter and was ruled out. Schottenheimer said he talked with Mafah postgame, and that he is OK.
Cowboys: At Arizona on Aug. 22.
Seahawks: At Tennessee on Aug. 23.

Rahmat Shah Century Leads Afghanistan To 4-0 ODI Series Sweep Of Ireland
Rahmat Shah finished on 143 not out.© X/@ACBofficials
Afghanistan captain Rahmat Shah scored a superb unbeaten century and shared a record third-wicket partnership with Sediqullah Atal as the tourists beat Ireland by six wickets in the fifth and final one-day international. Saturday’s victory in Belfast saw Afghanistan complete a dominant 4-0 series win after the opening match was washed out. Shah, who finished on 143 not out, added 201 runs with Atal after Afghanistan slumped to 22-2 inside six overs, with Liam McCarthy removing both openers. Their partnership was a new third-wicket record for Afghanistan in all ODI cricket, surpassing the 184-run stand between Shah and Hashmatullah Shahidi against Ireland in Abu Dhabi in 2021.
It seemed Ireland would at least enjoy a consolation win on Saturday after all-rounder Curtis Campher’s quickfire 96 took them to a total of 298-7 in their full 50 overs.
And they were even better-placed when McCarthy (3-47) dismissed Ibrahim Zadran and Rahmanullah Gurbaz early in Afghanistan’s pursuit of a target of 299.
But Shah and Atal rebuilt steadily before unleashing against Ireland leg-spinner Gavin Hoey, whose 10 wicketless overs cost 73 runs.
Shah’s 109-ball century included nine fours and a six, with Atal narrowly failing to record hundreds in consecutive games after being brilliantly caught by Cade Carmichael looking to pull McCarthy out of the ground.
Afghanistan still needed 76 runs in almost nine overs at that stage but, with Azmatullah Omarzai adding a rapid 24, they won with seven balls to spare.
