Daniel Merida Aguilar has pulled off the biggest win of his career, defeating world No. 24 Andrey Rublev 6-7(3), 6-2, 6-4, 6-4 at the US Open.

The Spaniard recovered after dropping a tight opening set, then took control of the match and never let Rublev back into it. The victory sends Merida Aguilar into the third round of a Grand Slam for the first time.

It is also his biggest win by ranking and the biggest name he has beaten so far.

Merida Aguilar has been playing with serious confidence in New York, and his latest performance suggests this may only be the beginning. The 21-year-old came into the tournament ranked outside the world’s top 100 but has now taken down one of the biggest names in the draw.

The way he’s playing, he’ll be taking out a lot more big names in the near future.
