Manchester City midfielder Elliot Anderson talks about starting supporting the club as a boy and how Erling Haaland is helping him
Elliot Anderson is ready to help his second team stay first in Manchester after revealing he was a boyhood Blue.
The £116million sprung a surprise after picking the Etihad over Old Trafford this summer by sharing a picture of himself as a kid in a City top. And while the Geordie stuck to his Newcastle roots, he took an interest in City after their takeover and has ‘loved supporting them’ ever since.
“Obviously, I’m a Newcastle fan deep down but you’ve always got a second team and for me, that was Manchester City,” he said. “I think I was about 7 or 8 years old, and I just started following the club and really enjoyed it. My grandad bought me a Manchester City shirt, so I’ve just loved supporting them since then.”
Anderson referred to City as the ‘kings of Manchester’ when he joined the club for £116m in summer, something coach Enzo Maresca this week said is ‘normal’ for somebody his age. Fellow signing Ayyoub Bouaddi was also pictured with a City shirt as a youngster, while Phil Foden, Erling Haaland, Nico O’Reilly and Rico Lewis were all City fans from a young age.
A derby win for City will move them eight points clear of United after just four games as they look to finish above them for the 14th straight year. Despite getting on the wrong side of his new teammate when Norway had a goal ruled out at the World Cup for Haaland knocking him to the floor, the No.9 has helped Anderson to find his feet at the Etihad.
“He’s been brilliant with me. He’s a really top guy,” said Anderson. “We have a responsibility to provide chances for him. And my first thought at the minute when I receive the ball is, where’s Erling? And I think that’s the best thought to have in your mind. Obviously, he’s a really dangerous goal scorer and if we can we can provide him with some good passes and some good chances then he’ll be really happy.”
