Explosive Vikings Defender Sees Buzz Build Even More Ahead of Week 1

Edge rusher Dallas Turner is probably the most common breakout candidate within the world of Minnesota Vikings writing. Some recent comments from the team’s skipper isn’t going to undermine that enthusiasm.

Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell chatted with Paul Allen for about twenty minutes. Some of that time got spent praising Mr. Turner, the explosive Vikings defender who is moving into his third NFL season.

Note some of the hype that got kicked over to the edge rusher: “Dallas is really, the pathway for him, really assuming and owning that role now is there for him. And he has had an unbelievable offseason. He’s had, just the growth and development.”

Not too long afterwards, O’Connell clarified that Turner’s strong end to the 2025 season led to having “parlayed that into a great offseason.”

At no point has talent ever been in question. There has, however, been a discrepancy between raw abilities and impact on the field. Think of Turner’s talent as being elite but his on-field play as being pretty good.

Does that chasm get shrunk in 2026? The Vikings are hoping that’s the case.

Last year, Turner led the Minnesota Vikings with 8 sacks. All things considered, that’s a healthy total but not what the team envisioned as a ceiling. Guys such as D.J. Wonnum have hit that total in the past, so we’re not talking about some sort of mythical height that’s reason for awe. Rather, a solid milestone worth building off of as 2026 arrives.

Last year, Turner started most of the Vikings’ games, doing so in response to injuries to each of Andrew Van Ginkel and Jonathan Greenard. The second of those two names, Greenard, belongs to a player who has been traded away, further removing the hurdles in front of Turner for an increased portion of the playing time.

In his seventeen games in 2025 (ten starts), Dallas Turner snagged 66 tackles alongside 11 tackles for loss. He has those 8 sacks alongside 15 quarterback hits. Further rounding out the statistics are his 3 passes defended and 4 forced fumbles (an elite total).

What the Vikings defender will need to do is to make his presence felt on the snaps when he’s not sacking the quarterback. Pushing the sack total well into the double digits would be a great outcome for the team, but that’s only a piece of the puzzle.

Indeed, Turner’s task involves setting a good edge in the running game when it’s his job to do so. Scrape down the line of scrimmage when the run goes to the opposite side. Consistently put the blocker(s) on his heels to make a QB skittish even if there is no hit. If he’s not going to get home, get his mitts into the air to obstruct the passer’s throwing lane.

Essentially, be the sort of talent who needs to be accounted for on a snap-by-snap basis since he’s so talented. Doing so will make the No. 17 selection appear closer to worth it.

Dallas Turner, 23, stands at 6’3″ and 247 pounds. Seeing him leverage his tremendous explosion and burst to consistently gain an edge would mean that Minnesota’s defense is considerably more dangerous.
