Former 1st-Round Vikings Passer Decides to Retire from NFL
Teddy Bridgewater got chosen at the beginning of the Mike Zimmer era. The 1st-Round Vikings passer was supposed to be the long-awaited savior under center but a knee injury robbed him of his ability to prove capable of doing so.
What followed has been a winding NFL journey that has now ended.
Mr. Bridgewater has decided to call it quits, doing so after a dozen seasons as a pro quarterback. The news got covered over on ESPN, a spot that offered up some what the passer had to say on social media about his decision. “It’s so crazy 10 years ago around this time, I suffered one of the most gruesome knee injuries the game itself, it’s players and some doctors had ever seen. Everything football related since 2016 had been fueled by the ‘experts’ predicting that I would never play football again. We really showed them by playing 10 more seasons!”
1st-Round Vikings Passer Calls it a Career
Truth be told, Bridgewater wasn’t a particularly impressive athlete. Nor, for that matter, did he have the world’s best arm.
Where he could shine was due to his intangibles. Nobody questioned his compete or toughness. A well-liked teammate, Bridgewater was a natural at forming strong relationships with coaches, teammates, and fans. Quite possibly, he could have been a game-manager at QB1 for the Minnesota Vikings for a long time had things gone differently with his knee injury.
Bridgewater’s motivation for retiring has much to do with that knee.
The QB in his own words: “this wheel of mine can no longer deal with something so simple as standing around on the turf field. This thing just doesn’t recover the same way it did years ago so I rather officially hang it up. It’s finally run its course and when the body speaks to me, I have to listen so that I can be in one piece and available for my children as they grow up. The game of football was beyond great to me and owes me nothing at all.”

As a Viking, Teddy Bridgewater‘s best season arrived in 2015. He led the Vikings to an 11-5 record behind a healthy completion rate coming in at 65.3%. His then boasted 3,231 yards, 14 touchdowns, and 9 interceptions. The sophomore’s passer rating finished off at 88.7.
For context, J.J. McCarthy had a 72.6 passer rating in 2025 while Kirk Cousins has a career passer rating sitting at 96.8. Bridgewater, at least per a specific metric, was a decent bit better than the 2025 version of McCarthy but not as good as the average Cousins season.
He was, essentially, a strong game manager who could have been plugged into Mike Zimmer’s vision for the Minnesota Vikings. Be a magnetic leader who can elevate in the clutch but seldom be asked to overcome the world. Elite defense, elite running, and solid quarterbacking: that was what was coming for the Vikings.
Oddly enough, the most recent version of the Vikings hoped that J.J. McCarthy — himself a 1st-Round Vikings passer — could put together a 2025 season that mirrored what Bridgewater did. Oddly enough, injury played a starring role in undermining that ambition for McCarthy.
Teddy Bridgewater’s career involved 83 career NFL games (and many more from the sidelines as a backup). He went 33-32 within his 65 starts. Added together, the former 1st-Round Vikings passer tossed for 15,182 yards, 75 touchdowns, and 47 interceptions. He’ll go out with a very healthy 66.3% completion rate.

The best defensive linemen are the ones who play on the other side of the line of scrimmage. Think back to some of the elite players of recent years such as Aaron Donald, Myles Garrett, and J.J. Watt (among others). How often did those guys get behind the blockers?
Vikings d-lineman Jalen Redmond isn’t at that level (or, for that matter, likely to get to that level). Still, he’s a good player who is getting better.
Jeff Diamond used to be the Vikings’ GM. He now offers his work for Vikings Territory, writing a weekly column for us. Check out what he had to say of the ascending talent: “In watching pass rush drills on Wednesday, Darrisaw did a good job on Dallas Turner and Donovan Jackson had a solid rep against Jalen Redmond who has been in the backfield often in camp practices” (emphasis added).
Vikings D-Lineman Jalen Redmond Ready to Explode
In 2024, Mr. Redmond was a promising player who represented a good story. His 18 tackles alongside the single sack and 6 tackles for loss were representative of promise.
The 2023 undrafted talent always boasted nice athleticism but didn’t stick around in the NFL after Carolina scooped him up. A major part of his problem was health, or lack thereof. Still, the lineman ran a blistering 4.81 forty, a terrific time for somebody at his position. The Panthers moved on but nobody in the NFL gave him a deal to stick around.
What followed was a trip to the spring football league before getting a shot with the Vikings. All along, his chance of making the final roster was small, but he overcame the odds in that ’24 season.
Part of what’s missing within that all-too-tidy retelling is that Redmond got shuffled around in that 2024 season.
On October 11th, 2024, Jalen Redmond was waived by the Minnesota Vikings. The NFL’s 31 teams had a shot to snag the defender for free. No team decided to do so, allowing the Vikings to put him on the practice squad on October 14th. He then got elevated to the active roster again on October 19th.
The back-and-forth between the practice squad and roster continued for October, meaning he was vulnerable to getting poached the whole time. Minnesota tossed him back onto the roster on November 6th of 2024.
Looking back, it’s wild that no NFL team saw how good he would become. Goodness, it’s wild that the Vikings took the risk to expose him to getting stolen away.
Since then, Redmond has proven to be indispensable for where the Minnesota Vikings are going. He’s one of the few young talents to be on the cusp of breaking through into the range of “very good” or possibly even “elite.”
Last year, Redmond had 62 tackles; 12 of his tackles were for a loss (in the backfield, as Diamond’s recent observation notes). The Vikings d-lineman also had 6 sacks, 8 quarterback hits, 5 passes defended, 2 fumble recoveries, and 1 forced fumble.
Quite possibly, Jalen Redmond will see a boost in production in 2026. Some of that is likely to be due to his own improvement and yet there’s a broader contextual argument. Is the front seven talent around Redmond better?
Adding Caleb Banks and Domonique Orange means welcoming a youth movement in the trenches. Some of the other key actors in play are Levi Drake Rodriguez, Ty Ingram-Dawkins, and Elijah Williams, none of whom are yet at their third pro seasons. Can youthful speed stress the other team’s o-line sufficiently to create more room for Redmond to do damage?
Jalen Redmond is a 6’3″ and 305-pound lineman who is 27. Per Over the Cap, Redmond is demanding just $1,075,000 on the cap. Continuing to get into the backfield will mean seeing his compensation explode in the offseason of 2027.

Terms were not disclosed, but ESPN reported it was a two-year, $13.2 million deal for the three-time All-Star.
Beal, 33, had declined his $5.6 million player option with the Clippers earlier this summer.
Beal played in only six games with Los Angeles in 2025-26 before sustaining a season-ending hip injury on Nov. 8. He managed just 8.2 points per game before the injury. He has averaged 21.4 points, 4.0 rebounds and 4.3 assists over 807 career games with the Washington Wizards (2012-23), Phoenix Suns (2023-25) and Clippers. The 2012 first-round draft pick (No. 3 overall) is a career 37.6% 3-point shooter.

It seems like only yesterday that Away Game was actively participating in sprint races across Australia’s eastern seaboard.
Away Game triumphed in the 2020 Magic Millions 2YO Classic held at the Gold Coast and was subsequently retired after finishing last in the Group 2 McEwen Stakes (1000m) at Moonee Valley in September 2022, having accumulated five victories and 11 minor placings from 26 starts.
Lady Catalina, the inaugural foal of Away Game and a yearling purchased for $1.8 million by Written Tycoon, is slated for her fifth start this Saturday. This event will mark her debut in Melbourne, competing in the Group 3 Quezette Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield.
Lady Catalina’s developmental trajectory has not been as swift as that of Away Game; she commenced her racing career in March with a maiden win at Newcastle before eventually competing in Brisbane during the winter carnival.
Upon returning to Ciaron Maher’s Sydney training facilities, Lady Catalina was prepared for her comeback run through a trial at Warwick Farm on August 4, before being transferred to Maher’s Ballarat stable last weekend.
Jack Turnbull, the National Assistant Trainer for Ciaron Maher Racing, confirmed that Lady Catalina underwent a workout at Ballarat on Tuesday to ready her for Saturday’s contest.
“She’s a winner and is Stakes placed and had a gallop at Ballarat on Tuesday, and she seems to be in very good form,” Turnbull said.
Considering her breeding, the Maher team is keen to secure a Black Type victory for Lady Catalina.
Turnbull indicated that the filly would be targeted towards fillies’ Black Type races in the weeks ahead and, if her form supported it, a potential entry into the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) at Flemington during Melbourne Cup week.
He remarked that the Saturday race represents a favourable starting point.
“It’s usually a good form line type of race,” Turnbull commented.
“It could be a Coolmore preparation for some, or they could go down the filly’s path.”
The Maher stable has not made a final decision regarding Ghana’s Akan’s participation in Saturday’s race, given her draw from gate 18 in a 19-horse field.
“We drew wide first-up, and she did a bit of work. She was good, without being brilliant,” Turnbull stated.
“It’s disappointing (the draw), you either go back or try to blend in, that’s if we’re taking part.”
For those interested in the betting markets for the race, exploring Australian betting sites would be a prudent step.
British cyclist Finlay Tarling has died at the age of 19 after a crash during stage eight of the Volta a Portugal.
The race was neutralised after Tarling was involved in a “serious accident” on the 166.8km route from Melgaco to Fafe.
“The organisation of the 87th Volta a Portugal em Bicicleta Jogos Santa Casa deeply regrets to announce the passing of British cyclist Finlay Tarling, from the NSN Development Team, following a serious accident that occurred during the 8th stage of the race,” race organisers confirmed in a statement.
“At this moment of profound dismay, the organisation of the Volta a Portugal and the Portuguese Cycling Federation express their most heartfelt condolences to the family of Finlay Tarling, to his teammates, to the NSN Development Team, and to all his friends and loved ones.”
Tarling was riding for the NSN Development Team having signed a two-year deal ahead of the 2025 season.
In a statement, NSN said: “We are heartbroken to announce the passing of Finlay Tarling at the Volta a Portugal today.
“Fin was a much loved member of our team but most importantly, he was a son, a brother, and a friend to so many. He will be deeply missed.
“Our deepest condolences go out to Fin’s parents Michael and Dawn, his brother Josh, and everyone who was lucky enough to call Fin a friend.”
A highly-rated talent, particularly as a time triallst, Tarling won three bronze medals at the 2024 UCI Junior Track Cycling World Championships.
His elder brother Josh rides for Netcompany Ineos and is a world champion in the points race on the track.

The Argonauts (4-4) are on a two-game winning streak and the Elks (6-3) are on a two-game losing streak in this matchup of teams holding second place in their respective divisions.
Fireworks are likely as Toronto quarterback Chad Kelly leads the league’s No. 2 offense (431.9 yards per game) and counterpart Cody Fajardo fuels Edmonton’s No. 4-ranked unit (410.3). Entering Week 11, Fajardo (2,808) and Kelly (2,672) ranked second and third in the CFL in passing yards.
The Argonauts are coming off a 33-30 home win against Calgary on Aug. 6 in which Kelly threw for 349 yards with a touchdown and a whopping four interceptions. He leads the league with 13 picks.
Kelly will have to watch out for Edmonton defensive back Tyrell Ford, who shares the league lead with five interceptions.
“(Kelly) is a good quarterback, he’s got a big arm. I’ll be out there, though. I’ll be waiting on something, a bad decision,” Ford told reporters on Tuesday. “For all the quarterbacks, I’m always open, so they can throw it to me. I won’t be mad.”
Kelly’s top intended target will be wide receiver Damonte Coxie, who earned CFL Player of the Week honors after catching eight passes for a season-high 161 yards in the win against the Stampeders. He has 42 catches for 68 yards and two touchdowns through eight games.
Coxie pointed out that two Toronto teammates are also over 500 receiving yards and another has 481. “It’s like we feed off of each other,” Coxie told TSN1050 on Thursday. “It’s hard to stop because if one gets rolling, it’s like we all made that catch, so it’s like a fire that just burns and once one person gets caught on fire all you need to do is just touch the next guy.”
Last weekend, Edmonton lost 48-30 at Montreal on Aug. 8. Fajardo passed for 231 yards with two touchdowns and one interception before being pulled in the fourth quarter.
This is the first meeting of the season between the Elks and Argos, with the rematch scheduled for Sept. 19 in Toronto.

Romeo’s Choice has been competing in excellent form this winter, leading trainer Richard Litt to extend his preparation while the gelding remains race-fit and in good condition.
The gelding, a dual acceptor at Rosehill on Saturday, has been withdrawn from the Asahi Super Dry Handicap (1200m) to compete in the Racing And Sports Handicap (1400m). This decision comes despite Romeo’s Choice having never won over this distance in five prior attempts.
However, the seven-year-old has placed twice at the 1400m journey, most notably a second behind the stakes-performed mare Firestorm. Litt feels the time is right to take a chance over this distance again.
“We haven’t had a lot of luck at the 1400, but we want to give it a go,” Litt commented.
“He’s going wonderful, and he’s a lovely horse.”
“It is tempting, and it opens up a lot more races going forward next ‘prep’ if we know he can run a strong 14.”
A winner over 1300m at Rosehill two starts prior, Romeo’s Choice experienced a checkered run in the straight when finishing fifth to Carbonados over the same distance on August 1.
He is set to face a smart field this weekend, featuring Group 1 winner Attica and Epsom Handicap runner-up Fully Lit. However, both are resuming from a break and have historically performed better over longer races.
Romeo’s Choice will have the benefit of race fitness. If he can receive some luck from his outside draw in barrier 12, Litt expects the horse to run his typical honest race.
“He was solid last time. He was in a tricky spot and didn’t get a great crack at them, so I just hope there’s good speed, he can relax, and he’ll finish off well,” he said.
Barber will represent the stable in the Asahi Super Dry Handicap (1200m). Litt believes the 2025 Takeover Target Stakes (1100m) winner will be a strong contender, provided the track doesn’t deteriorate from its soft 5 rating on Friday.
“He’s a big chance,” Litt stated.
“He’s got Tyler (Schiller) back on him. We’ve been trying to get Tyler back on him for a while. He won a Takeover Target on him.”
“All sorts of stuff has happened to him this prep, but this is his race, and the competition probably isn’t as strong as it has been.”
“I’d be very disappointed if he wasn’t fighting out the finish.”
Veteran galloper Huon completes Litt’s Rosehill team in the Proven Thoroughbreds Handicap (1100m). With the assistance of apprentice jockey Siena Grima’s claim, Litt is optimistic about his prospects.
“If he has an ounce of luck – he’s got barrier one, a two kilo claim from Siena, he loves hugging that fence – he’ll be right there,” he said.
The news has been less encouraging for Litt’s stakes-winning mare Caffe Florian. Her future remains uncertain after sustaining a “pretty significant injury” when finishing fifth in the Arrowfield 3YO Sprint (1200m) in April.
She is currently undergoing rehabilitation, and Litt anticipates receiving a prognosis towards the end of the year.
“We’re very hopeful we’ll get her back. We’re going to give her every opportunity to race again but if she doesn’t, she’ll make a beautiful broodmare,” he stated.

Time is beginning to run out for Toronto FC.
A 12-match winless run in MLS – 13 in all competitions – has Toronto (3-7-8) sitting in 12th place in the Eastern Conference, three spots and six points below the playoff line, with 16 games remaining in the regular season. Wins have been few and far between for TFC this year, with their last victory coming on April 4.
Three of Toronto’s four games in August and five of its next six overall are at home, starting with Saturday’s visit by the New England Revolution, which will be the Reds’ first outing at BMO Field since a 4-2 loss to Lionel Messi and Inter Miami on May 9.
Now more than ever, coach Robin Fraser’s side can’t afford any major missteps, especially at home. The margin of error during the upcoming slate of games for Toronto is minuscule. TFC have to take full advantage of this slew of matches at BMO Field. If not, they run the risk of being out of the playoff race before the summer is even over.
“These home games that we have now, especially these early ones, we need to take care of (them) to put ourselves in a good way and put this club in a good mindset, in a winning mindset, and make BMO a place where we go to and three points is the only thing on every single person’s mind when we step into the stadium,” fullback Richie Laryea said this week.
It’s a sentiment that was echoed by veteran centre back Walker Zimmerman.
“It’s an important stretch of games for us, and we still have 16 games left to make a good push … In the scheme of things, after three or four games, you start racking up three or four wins and we’re having a different conversation, so we know the job that lies ahead for us. And I’m just excited to get back at BMO to try and make a real push,” Zimmerman offered.
During a nine-game home stretch from March 14 to May 9 prior to the MLS break for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, TFC earned two wins and collected just 11 points, squandering the great opportunity they had of playing so many games early in the season at BMO Field. The club’s failure to scratch out results at home is just one of many reasons why it is sitting in such a precarious position at the moment.
Each of Toronto’s next five matches at BMO Field are against teams sitting higher up the table in the East, including the Supporters’ Shield-leading Nashville SC. After that, the Reds will only play at home three times over the course of their final 10 matches of the campaign – two of which will be against higher-ranked clubs.
It’s a difficult schedule for a Toronto side that has won just five times at home since the start of last season. Laryea, whose previous appearance for TFC at home was on April 22, is hopeful the excitement that BMO Field housed during this summer’s World Cup can rub off on the Reds.
“I think the whole group is just very excited to get back to playing at BMO Field. … Playing that first game [for Canada] in the World Cup here at BMO Field was an incredible experience, and the energy and everything was great in the stadium. So, I hope to pick off from there with the fans, where we’re able to get a very good crowd at BMO Field, and kick on for the second half of the season,” Laryea said.
On the positive side, Toronto is almost at full fitness after being decimated by injuries all season.
What’s more, both of Toronto’s designated players featured in its last game, a 1-1 draw away to New York City FC on July 31, after missing matches due to injury – the contest at Yankee Stadium marked the first time this year that midfielder Djordje Mihailovic and Josh Sargent were in the same starting 11.
Laryea feels that getting so many guys off the injury list and back on the pitch could be the key to a potential late-season playoff push by Toronto.
“Just looking at the group of players we have is one of the biggest things. We have now a lot of guys healthy, a lot of guys right there about to be healthy again. I think that’s optimistic, and then in MLS we know that once you start getting in a good way, it’s very easy to turn your season around,” Laryea stated.
“We’ve seen it multiple times. We’ve seen it year after year. Teams catch fire around the summertime, and now they’re able to make a good run and get themselves into (the) playoffs. So, we’ll be looking to do the exact same thing.”
Elsewhere in MLS this weekend:
• CF Montreal made a blockbuster move this week when it signed free agent forward Alexis Sanchez, who scored 198 goals during an 18-year spell with a number of European clubs, including Arsenal and FC Barcelona. Sanchez is also Chile’s all-time top scorer with 51 goals across 168 international appearances.
The addition of the decorated striker comes at a crucial time for Montreal, who sits 14th in the Eastern Conference – seven points below the playoff line – and is winless in its last seven games. Montreal has one of the worst attacks in MLS with just 24 goals in 18 games, so Sanchez will have his work cut out, possibly starting with Saturday’s home game vs. D.C. United in which he could potentially make his MLS debut.
• Rivalry matches in MLS don’t get more intense than Cascadia Cup contests, the latest of which takes place on Sunday when the Vancouver Whitecaps visit the Seattle Sounders. The Whitecaps boast the best attack (38 goals) and defence (17 conceded) in the Western Conference but are mired in a six-game winless run, which includes a trio of losses in the Leagues Cup.
• The top teams in the league square off on Saturday when table-topping Nashville SC hosts second-place Inter Miami. A win by Miami would vault it into first place and extend its unbeaten streak to eight games, but Nashville will be a tough nut to crack as it’s won eight of its last 12 matches with just one loss.
• Sunday night marks the first Copa Tejas clash of the season between Austin FC and FC Dallas. Created in 2021, the Copa Tejas is a competition that pits all three Texas clubs in MLS (including the Houston Dynamo) against one another in a round-robin format, with the team finishing with the highest point total crowned the winner. Both Austin and Dallas have won the title twice.
• Former FC Barcelona star Sergi Roberto could make his MLS debut for the LA Galaxy in Saturday’s road match vs. Houston. The Spanish midfielder officially signed with the Galaxy last week as a free agent following two seasons with Como in Italy’s Serie A that succeeded an 18-year career with Barcelona in Spain.

Huge Weekend of Club GAA
For GAA supporters, there is also an enormous programme of club championship action available online throughout the weekend.
More than 100 club GAA matches are set to be streamed across Clubber and StreamSport, covering football, hurling and camogie championships around the country.

With more than 100 games available across the two streaming services, it is one of the busiest weekends of the year for club GAA coverage.
What to Watch This Weekend
If you are looking for the standout events, the European Athletics Championships should provide plenty of Irish interest, while Ireland’s Hockey World Cup games against Australia and Spain give supporters another chance to follow the national team live on RTÉ2.
The Saturday rugby programme is also worth watching, with Australia v Japan early in the morning, Munster v Ulster and Leinster v Connacht in the afternoon, followed by Bulls v New Zealand on Sky Sports Mix.
Meanwhile, the huge programme of club GAA means there should be something live for supporters in almost every county across Ireland.
SportsNewsIreland will have the latest sports news, fixtures, results and live television information throughout the weekend.
One of the most promising prospects currently in the Chelsea Academy, Ryan Kavuma-McQueen is embarking on his first loan adventure. And it will be quite a challenging adventure, with the 17-year-old (17!) winger joining Championship side Portsmouth FC for the season.
With the Blues since the U8 level, Kavuma-McQueen was named to his first senior matchday squad at age 16, and made his senior debut for the club last season as a substitute in our FA Cup quarterfinal win over lower-league Port Vale. He was included in the preseason tour that just finished, starting the first match of the tour, even.
“Ryan is a very talented young player with bags of potential and we’re delighted to have him at Pompey this season. He is quick, direct and can play off both sides. He’s someone who is very highly rated – both by us and Chelsea. […] It will be a challenge for him to be away from home and in a first team environment for a sustained period, but he’s an exciting addition to our squad.”

As always with that guy, it Mousinho with an “S”, not an “R”. Mousinho has been with Pompey since 2023 (along with assistant, and former Chelsea player Jon Harley), bringing them up from League One and then keeping them in the Championship the last couple seasons. They once had Tino Anjorin on loan from us and gave him regular opportunities (when not injured), so hopefully that will be the case for Kavuma-McQueen as well. (In fact, Mousinho wanted Anjorin for a second season as well, but the youngster would decide to leave Chelsea completely and head to Italy instead. Tino’s currently with Torino, though injuries continue to haunt him.)

Portsmouth, who also count former Chelsea prospects John Swift (Swifty!) and Ben Killip (that’s a deep cut) among their number, start their season this weekend, against QPR. (Swifty, now 31, notched his 400th senior professional appearance last season. He was always one of my favorites to watch in the Academy back in the day.)
Friday, day five of the championships, is a busy one from an Irish view point with various competitors in action across both the morning and evening session.
Kate O’Connor will be first into action in Heat 2 of the 100m Hurdles of the Women’s Heptathlon at 10.42am. She will also have the High Jump at 11.25 – she is is Group A. O’Connor will then have the shot put tonight at 7.35pm, and will conclude day one with the 200m at 8.55pm.
Round one of the relays get underway this morning with Ireland’s Men’s 4 x 400m team taking to the starting line at 11.16am, with women’s team in action in round one at 11.35am.
Andrew Coscoran and Cathal Doyle will compete in round one of the men’s 1500m which gets underway at 12.05pm. Doyle is in the first heat at 12.05, with Coscoran in the second at 12.15pm.
Along with Kate O’Connor’s participation in the shot put and the 200m (as above) in the evening session, the other Irish interest this evening will be Niamh Allen and Fiona Everard in the Women’s 10,000m Final at 7.45pm.
