Gautam Gambhir demands ‘special effort’ as India gear up for semi-final against England | Cricket News
NEW DELHI: India head coach Gautam Gambhir has warned that nothing short of a “special effort” will be enough when the defending champions face England in a blockbuster T20 World Cup semi-final in Mumbai, even as he lavished praise on Sanju Samson for keeping their title defence alive.Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW!Samson produced a sublime unbeaten 97 off just 50 balls to power India to a five-wicket win over the West Indies at a packed Eden Gardens, chasing down 196 in a winner-takes-all Super Eights clash. His knock, studded with 12 fours and four sixes, lifted India to 199/5 and into the last four.
“We all know how good a player Sanju is,” Gambhir said after the match. “It was all about backing him and when the team needed him the most. Obviously today was the day when he probably showed his full potential.”Samson had played just one group-stage match, scoring 22 against Namibia, as India preferred a left-hand opening pair. Recalled for the Super Eights to add a right-handed option at the top, he made 24 against Zimbabwe — enough for Gambhir to persist with him.“I have always said that he is a world-class player. He is a great talent and hopefully he can kick on from now and we can see a lot more innings like this,” Gambhir added.
Poll
Who will win the T20 World Cup semi-final: India or England?
But the focus now shifts to Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium, where a formidable England side awaits on Thursday. Harry Brook’s men arrive unbeaten in the Super Eights and peaking at the right time.“Look, they’re a world-class team, they’re a quality team, they’ve got a lot of quality players as well,” Gambhir said in a post-match news conference. He acknowledged the new challenge posed by Wankhede’s conditions after Kolkata. “We all know that playing at the Wankhede is a tough game, but it’s another opportunity to do something special for the team and for the country.”India, he stressed, must be flawless.“Hopefully we play our best game, that is going to be very important and we can keep ticking all the boxes. Because we will need a special effort to beat a quality side like England,” Gambhir further added.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s 30 leads Thunder past Mavs
Mar 1, 2026; Dallas, Texas, USA; Oklahoma City Thunder guard Alex Caruso (9) and guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (2) celebrate after Gilgeous-Alexander dunks the ball against the Dallas Mavericks during the second quarter at the American Airlines Center. Mandatory Credit: Jerome Miron-Imagn Images Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored 30 points to lead the Oklahoma City Thunder to a 100-87 road win over the Dallas Mavericks on Sunday.
It was the 123rd consecutive game for Gilgeous-Alexander to score 20 or more points, moving him within three of tying Wilt Chamberlain’s NBA record.
Gilgeous-Alexander did break Chamberlain’s record for consecutive 20-plus point games on the road with 59.
The Thunder have won back-to-back games and seven of their last nine and swept the season series between the teams, beating the Mavericks for the third time this season.
The Mavericks have dropped three consecutive games and 13 of their last 15. Dallas was held to fewer than 100 points for the first time since Nov. 22 against Memphis.
Oklahoma City took the lead for good just more than three minutes into the game, but though they quickly moved up by double figures, the Thunder couldn’t shake Dallas until late.
The Thunder struggled from beyond the arc for much of the game, going just 6 of 29 (20.7%) through the first three quarters.
Oklahoma City took the lead with an early 12-0 run fueled by six points and an alley-oop assist from Gilgeous-Alexander.
The Thunder led by as many as 16 points in the first half but Dlalas quickly cut that deficit in half.
Oklahoma City finally pulled away to start the fourth quarter, even with Gilgeous-Alexander on the bench.
Isaiah Joe scored eight consecutive Thunder points during a 10-2 run to start the final quarter that extended Oklahoma City’s lead to 22.
Isaiah Hartenstein had three assists during that decisive stretch, including twice finding Joe for 3-pointers to help the Thunder show some life from beyond the arc.
Dallas did pull within 14 with less than five minutes to go.
Chet Holmgren added 19 points and nine rebounds in the win while Joe added 14 off the bench.
Caleb Martin led the Mavericks with 18 points while Brandon Williams and Max Christie added 14.
Dallas’ Klay Thompson left the game late in the second quarter with an adductor contusion and did not return.

Long Jump PB and Championship Record for Kate O’Connor
Kate O’Connor was the star of day two of the 123.ie National Senior Indoor Championships at the Sport Ireland National Indoor Arena.
O’Connor produced one of the standout performances of the championships in the women’s long jump.
Her opening-round effort of 6.50m was both a personal best and a championship record. The jump pushed O’Connor up to third place on the Irish all-time list and capped a remarkable weekend following her personal best run in the 60m hurdles (8.21 seconds) yesterday.
Speaking after her record-breaking performance, Kate O’Connor said:
“I’ve be training well and I was never going to enter myself into something I’m not training well in. It’s one thing doing well in training, but another thing to come out and do it when you’re under the pressure of competition. You’ve three chances to put in a good attempt as a multi-eventer, so I’m delighted I put that jump in on my first attempt.”
First Senior Title for Nick Griggs
The men’s 3000m final saw Nick Griggs claim the gold medal. The win for a first Irish senior title for Griggs, who stopped the clock in 8:14.52. His victory came after a final lap battle with eventual second Darragh McElhinney (8:15.08), and third-place finisher Andrew Coscoran.
Commenting on his first senior title, Griggs stated:
“It’s special to win my first senior title in the circumstances where it was basically a race-off. Who knows what the selectors will do but I’ve secured my auto qualification for the World indoors. There was a lot more pressure on nationals this year, usually nationals you can go out and enjoy it a bit more, so I’m delighted I was able to deliver on my race plan.”
Women’s 3000m Gold for Shanahan
Louise Shanahan timed her finish to perfection in the women’s 3000m final as she came through in the final metres to clock 9:22.47, and add the 3000m indoor title to last year’s 800m indoor title. Shanahan crossed the finishing line ahead of CNDR Track AC’s Zoe Toland, wo clocked 9:22.59, with Leevale AC’s Michelle Finn claiming the bronze medal in a time of 9:23.03.
1500m Gold Medals for Holmes and Mallon
The 1500m finals were both very tactical affairs, with both the men’s and women’s finals producing late finishes.
Lucy Holmes took the women’s title in 4:31.10 – her first senior indoor title. In the men’s final Lughaidh Mallon launched a decisive move to pass Luke McCann in the final strides to capture gold in dramatic fashion in a winning time of 3:43.45.
400m Wins for Mawdsley and Doggett
Tipperary athlete Sharlene Mawdsley showed her dominance in the women’s 400m with a composed performance to claim a third consecutive national indoor title in 51.89.
The men’s 400m was decided in a tight finish as Seán Doggett held off Fintan Dewhirst to take his first senior indoor crown in 47.33 seconds.
Neville and Akinola are 60m sprint winners
In the short sprints, Ciara Neville returned to the top step of the podium in the women’s 60m, securing her third national indoor title and her first since 20120. Neville’s winning time was 7.27 seconds.
In the men’s 60m final, Bori Akinola was in excellent form as he successfully defended his title. His time of 6.60 seconds continues his strong early-season form as his attention now turns towards the World Indoor Championships.
Other National Indoor Title Winners
In the women’s 800m final Hannah Seagrave won her first senior indoor title, while the men’s 800m final winner, Cillian Kirwan, claimed a championship record of 1:47.68 in winning his title.
West Waterford’s Kate Veale delivered another masterclass to claim an extraordinary tenth consecutive national indoor title in the women’s 3000m walk. Oisín Lane from Mullingar Harriers produced a commanding performance to secure his first senior indoor crown in the men’s event.
Eric Favors broke the championships record in the men’s shot with 19.57m, while Michaela Walsh won a 9th indoor title in-a-row. Michael Kent retained his title in the men’s pole vault with a best clearance of 4.50m.

Dane Miller’s Week 17 Best-in-West Hoops Power Rankings
Several teams in the West are squarely on the Bubble.
From Santa Clara in the WCC to UCLA in the Big Ten, there will be plenty of nerves come Selection Sunday.
New Mexico and San Diego State are battling for what could be the lone at-large bid in the Mountain West while California is fighting for its spot in the ACC.
With only five teams in the region expected to be locks, the final week of the regular season is pivotal.
Here’s how I view the Top 10 College Basketball Teams in the West with two weeks to go until Selection Sunday.
1. Arizona (14-2, 27-2)
Tommy Lloyd is one victory away from winning the Big 12 outright.
The Cats got their revenge against Kansas on Saturday after coming from behind to beat Baylor earlier in the week. Koa Peat looked good in his return, setting the stage for a run in March.
Arguably a lock for the 1-seed in the West, Arizona can probably seal its position with a win over Iowa State on Monday.
2. Gonzaga (16-2, 28-3)
How deep does Gonzaga go in the NCAA Tournament? The Zags have made the Sweet 16 nine straight times.
But all dynasties eventually come to an end. Whether or not this is the year the streak ends remains to be seen.
Over the weekend, Gonzaga lost to Saint Mary’s and gave the Gaels a share of the WCC Regular Season Championship as a result. Even so, Mark Few deserves the benefit of the doubt.
3. BYU (8-8, 20-9)
There is no other high-major program in a worse downward trend than BYU. From getting embarrassed by UCF to losing against West Virginia, the Cougars are falling apart.
A Sweet 16 no longer seems viable. Now, a loss in the First Round wouldn’t be a shock.
It’s unclear where BYU would be seeded at this point, but a 7-seed or 8-seed seems about right.
4. Utah State (14-4, 24-5)
Sitting atop the Mountain West standings, Utah State is the expected auto-bid from the league.
But all it takes is one or two games to flip the narrative. The Aggies can’t slip up at UNLV this week and then need to handle New Mexico in Logan to finish the year.
If all goes according to plan, Utah State should avoid the dreaded 8-seed versus 9-seed matchup.
5. Saint Mary’s (16-2, 27-4)
The Gaels arguably secured an invitation to the Big Dance with the victory over Gonzaga.
There is still the WCC Tournament to deal with. But even a loss to say, Santa Clara, probably wouldn’t knock Saint Mary’s out of the field.
Now, seeding becomes the primary question. Is this the year Randy Bennett’s team finally breaks through to the Sweet 16?
6. UCLA (11-7, 19-10)
With an unexpected loss to Minnesota, the Bruins are in a somewhat uncomfortable position.
However, the Selection Committee loves to put Power Conference teams into the field these days, and the Big Ten carries clout.
If UCLA beats Nebraska this week, they could lock in an at-large bid, assuming the Bruins take care of USC in the regular season finale.
7. New Mexico (13-5, 22-7)
Beating San Diego State mitigated the damage from losing to Nevada earlier in the week.
If the Selection Show were held today, New Mexico might be one of the Last Four In. But the Mountain West is in an unfavorable position.
It’s unlikely that the league gets multiple at-large bids. That leaves UNM fighting with San Diego State for the lone invitation.
8. San Diego State (13-5, 19-9)
Losing three of their last four games, the Aztecs are on the outside looking in.
If not for the run to the National Championship Game a few years ago, San Diego State might not even be considered for the final at-large spots.
But the program has enough clout with the Selection Committee to stay in consideration. This week’s games against Boise State and UNLV are must-wins.
9. Santa Clara (15-3, 24-7)
The Broncos have work to do. The margin of defeat against Saint Mary’s last week was damaging.
Now, Santa Clara might need to make the WCC Championship Game to secure an at-large bid. The bracket is favorable, though, setting the stage for a rematch with the Gaels in Semifinals.
Every contest from here on out is essentially an NCAA Tournament elimination game.
10. California (8-8, 20-9)
It’s hard to understate how bad the loss to Pittsburgh was. That’s a defeat that just can’t happen at this point in the year. And not by 16 in Berkeley.
The only saving grace is the ACC’s reputation. The league will advocate hard for its members and has an effective media propaganda arm.
At the same time, Cal’s lack of recent success in the NCAA Tournament hurts it chances. The Selection Committee might prefer a bigger brand when it comes down to it.

Sarina Wiegman: Lionesses given safety reassurances in Turkey
Manager Sarina Wiegman says England have been given reassurances there are no safety concerns about their Women’s World Cup qualifier against Ukraine being held in Turkey as the conflict in the Middle East widens.
The Lionesses play in Antalya at 17:00 GMT on Tuesday because Ukraine are unable to play in their home country as a result of the war with Russia, which is in its fifth year.
On Saturday the US attacked Iran as part of a joint operation with Israel, sparking retaliatory strikes across the Middle East.
The Iranian regime has responded with attacks on US assets and countries in the region with a US military presence, including Bahrain, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait and Iraq.
Turkey borders Iran and Iraq and is close to Cyprus, where an Iranian drone crashed into a British RAF base on Sunday. Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon have also exchanged strikes.
“Yes, we did have reassurances. We are in close contact with the government and the people here that are responsible,” said Wiegman.
“We’re fine here but we’re keeping an eye on it. We’re in contact all the time with the responsible authorities.
“Of course, you’re concerned about what’s happening in the world. When we think, or our government thinks it’s unsafe, we will go back. At this moment, we don’t have signals of that.”
England travelled to Turkey last Wednesday for a training camp but it is unclear how many fans will attend the match following the weekend’s developments, with some supporters and several media outlets already choosing to withdraw.
Wiegman says the fact Ukraine are having to host the match in Turkey because of conflict in their home country following Russia’s invasion is “really sad”.
“We have great facilities here and the climate is really good so we can prepare really well. But the reason we’re here is not nice,” she added.
“You want Ukraine to be able to play in their home country. They had to travel a lot themselves to get here. The things they have in front of them in their country is really horrible.
“We hope this game unites a bit. It’s a chance for Ukraine to show themselves to the world in another way where hopefully football unites and brings some joy.”

Colorado QB Dominiq Ponder dies at 23 in single-car crash: Buffaloes junior played in two games last season

Colorado junior quarterback Dominiq Ponder died at the age of 23, the school announced on Sunday. Ponder was killed in a single-car crash that occurred in Boulder early Sunday morning.
Ponder, who transferred to Colorado in 2024, spent the last two seasons with the Buffaloes. Colorado coach Deion Sanders and athletic director Fernando Lovo both issued statements honoring Ponder and his family.
“God, please comfort the entire Ponder family during this difficult time,” Sanders said. “Dominiq was one of my favorites because of his passion, his heart and his willingness to go beyond what was asked. He will certainly be remembered, missed, and in our thoughts and prayers.”
According to the Colorado State Patrol, Ponder was driving his Tesla when he lost control on a curve. The vehicle then went through a guardrail and hit an electrical pole before rolling down an embankment and catching fire. Ponder was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities suspect speed was a factor in the crash.
“The entire CU Athletics family is devastated at the tragic passing of Dominiq Ponder,” Lovo said. “He epitomized the values of passion, enthusiasm, leadership, toughness, and intelligence that were revered by his teammates and coaches alike. Our hearts go out to his family and all of his teammates during this difficult time.”
A native of Opa Locka, Florida, Ponder played high school football at Miami Carol City. He spent the 2023 season at Bethune-Cookman before transferring to Colorado. Ponder appeared in two games last season, and he was set to play his third season at Colorado in 2026.

Arsenal vs Chelsea: Title-chasing Gunners face crucial Premier League test | Football News
Arsenal will be looking to respond strongly this afternoon as they host Chelsea at the Emirates Stadium, following Manchester City’s narrow win over Leeds that cut the Gunners’ lead at the top to just two points. With a 22-year wait for a league title still ongoing, every point is crucial as Mikel Arteta’s side chases glory in the Premier League.
Chelsea arrive under pressure in the race for next season’s Champions League football, especially after Liverpool’s dominant victory over West Ham on Saturday. While Liam Rosenior has steadied the Blues, their recent form has been patchy. Draws against Leeds and relegation-threatened Burnley at Stamford Bridge have left Chelsea struggling to make the most of a favorable run of fixtures, and their Carabao Cup semi-final exit to Arsenal highlights their inconsistency.
At the Emirates, Arsenal look the stronger side. They have shown they can handle pressure, notably in last week’s north London derby against Spurs. Chelsea are likely to struggle against the attacking firepower and momentum of the Gunners, making an Arsenal win the most probable outcome in what promises to be a high-intensity clash.
Arsenal Team news
Arsenal face fitness concerns ahead of their clash with Chelsea, with key player Bukayo Saka having limped off during last week’s north London derby against Spurs. His availability remains uncertain, adding to the injury worries for Mikel Arteta.
Apart from Saka, midfielder Mikel Merino is the only confirmed absentee for the Gunners. However, there are lingering doubts over a few other important players, including Kai Havertz, Max Dowman, and defender Ben White.
Chelsea Team news
Wesley Fofana will miss the match due to suspension after his red card in a disappointing display against Burnley last week. Marc Cucurella is also struggling with a hamstring injury, leaving his participation uncertain. Additionally, English defenders Levi Colwill and Jamie Gittens are both unavailable for Chelsea.
Arsenal vs Chelsea Probable starting 11
Chelsea starting 11: James, Adarabioyo, Chalobah, Gusto – Caicedo, Santos – Palmer, Fernandez, Neto – Pedro
Arsenal starting 11: Timber, Saliba, Gabriel, Hincapie – Rice, Zubimendi, Odegaard – Saka, Gyokeres, Trossard
Player battles to look out for
Declan Rice vs. Moisés Caicedo
Two of the Premier League’s finest midfielders will go head-to-head at the Emirates. Declan Rice has emerged as a commanding presence and leader for Arsenal, but he will face a stern test against the dynamic Moisés Caicedo. Both players excel in both defensive and attacking phases, making them game-changers. Caicedo had the upper hand in their first meeting until an early red card in November, while Rice and Arsenal dominated the rematch in February. Containing each other will be no easy task, but whichever midfielder performs better could have the final say in this crucial clash.
Bukayo Saka vs. Jorrel Hato
Bukayo Saka may be a minor injury doubt for Arsenal, with Noni Madueke ready to step in if needed. Assuming Saka starts, he will face a different Chelsea left-back due to Marc Cucurella’s injury. Jorrel Hato could be handed the right-back role, presenting the biggest test of his young Chelsea career. Hato must contain Saka’s creativity, or Arsenal could dominate down this side.
William Saliba vs. João Pedro
Arsenal’s defensive linchpin, William Saliba, will face Chelsea’s hot striker João Pedro, who has scored seven goals and assisted four in 10 games. Saliba has kept Pedro quiet in both Carabao Cup semifinals, but the forward’s strength, movement, and skill make him a constant threat. Another clean performance will be crucial for Arsenal’s title ambitions.
Gabriel vs. Robert Sánchez
Arsenal’s set-piece weapon Gabriel could prove decisive against Chelsea. His aerial dominance and timing make him a key threat from corners. Chelsea’s goalkeeper Robert Sánchez, along with defenders like Trevoh Chalobah or Mamadou Sarr, will need to organize and clear effectively to prevent Arsenal from capitalizing. Set-pieces could ultimately tip the balance in this encounter.

Chris Eubank Jr in talks for ‘fire fight’ but wants opponent to make a catchweight
Chris Eubank Jr’s return to the ring seems to be edging ever closer.
Eubank’s rivalry with Conor Benn dominated 2025. He won the first fight but lost the second convincingly, leading many fans to questions whether or not retirement was on the cards. Following treatment in hospital for an undisclosed health condition, the 36-year-old is now plotting a comeback.
According to Chris Mannix, that could come against Edgar Berlanga. Speaking on the DAZN broadcast for Emanuel Navarrete and Eduardo Nunez’ unification bout this past weekend in Arizona, he revealed ongoing discussions.
“Edgar Berlanga has been sorting through what he’s going to do in his next fight, but I’ve been told there are plans in the works to bring Edgar back in the first half of this year. An interesting fight has been discussed with Team Berlanga, and that is a potential showdown with Chris Eubank Jr.
“[Eubank] is moving back up in weight, and they have discussed a fight … What is holding up those talks is the weight. Eubank Jr, I’m told, wants the fight at 164 pounds. Berlanga says I can’t go any lower than 168. Can they work it out? I don’t know, but that’s a big fight.”
Supporting the report, Berlanga – who has lost to Canelo on points and, more recently, Hamzah Sheeraz by stoppage – took to X to talk the fight up.
Me vs @ChrisEubankJr will be a fire fight in LONDON! 🇵🇷 vs 🇬🇧 👀👀👀👀
— Edgar Berlanga Jr (@EdgarBerlangaJr) March 1, 2026
Fans may be surprised at Eubank’s desire for a catchweight over a straight move to super-middleweight, particularly given his documented struggles making 160 for the two Conor Benn fights. However, the rehydration of only 10lbs may have been the real test in those stadium bouts, and there would be no such clause this time around.
The Brit’s team may also be thinking about the catchweight as more of a disadvantage to Berlanga – who has fought at 168 since 2020 – rather than an advantage for their man.
Whatever the reason, it seems Berlanga will not budge on the 4lbs.
