Australian great Ricky Ponting has suggested a radical change in the way cricket is marketed in the United States, saying administrators should consider dropping the word ‘cricket’ altogether and promoting the sport simply as ‘T20’.With the United States emerging as a key part of the International Cricket Council (ICC)’s global growth strategy, Ponting believes the traditional name could be holding the sport back in a market more familiar with baseball, American football and basketball.The former Australia captain feels the word ‘cricket’ could lead new American audiences to immediately think of Test matches and their five-day format, rather than the shorter and more entertainment-driven T20 game.Speaking to The Athletic, Ponting acknowledged that he is a traditionalist who played far more Test cricket than T20 cricket. However, he said he would be open to a complete rebranding of the format if it helped attract a new generation of American sports fans.“If I was bringing it here wholly and solely to sell and promote the game, I wouldn’t call it cricket,” Ponting begins. “It’d just be rebranded as T20 only. Leave the cricket thing aside. As soon as young people hear cricket in parts of the world where they’re not brought up on the game, they think about it being a long, drawn-out, five-day game, and it’s not that.”Ponting also believes baseball could provide a useful comparison for introducing T20 to an American audience. Rather than focusing on the technical differences between the sports, he wants potential fans to understand the high-scoring nature of the shortest cricket format.“I would compare it to baseball as much as I could and give kids that chance to understand you’re hitting 15 sixes per game in a game of T20 cricket, but you are hitting less than one home run a game in the game of baseball.”The United States has become one of the ICC’s biggest development priorities, given the size and commercial strength of its sports market. While baseball, American football and basketball remain dominant, soccer has also been growing rapidly in the country.Cricket, meanwhile, has traditionally had a much smaller mainstream following in the US and has largely been played and followed by Asian, European and African expat communities.The ICC has been attempting to broaden that audience through a series of major initiatives. The country hosted a successful T20 World Cup in 2024, while Major League Cricket has been developed as a domestic competition. Ponting himself is involved in the league as coach of Washington Freedom.The ICC is also working towards cricket’s return to the Olympic stage at the Los Angeles 2028 Games, with efforts underway to develop suitable grounds and infrastructure in the US.With T20 at the centre of many of those efforts, Ponting believes presenting the sport as a fast-paced, modern product rather than immediately associating it with Test cricket could help the ICC connect with American audiences.

Manchester United are set to take on Everton at Hill Dickinson Stadium on Sunday, but Michael Carrick looks to be without a number of potentially key players for the match

Manchester United travel to Merseyside on Sunday to face Everton at Hill Dickinson Stadium, but Michael Carrick will have to contend with a number of player injuries for the trip. The Reds have had a mixed start to the season thus far, losing 2-0 to Hull City in their opener before running riot over Ipswich Town with a 5-2 win.

And while Carrick will look for more consistency going forward, with the club well-placed to compete in the Premier League this term, this weekend’s clash with Everton will not be without its challenges. The Toffees are unbeaten this season so far, having enjoyed a 2-0 win over Crystal Palace on opening day, as well as a 1-1 draw with Bournemouth last weekend.

To make matters worse, United will also be without a number of key players for their trip, with various starters still recovering from respective injuries. Here, the MEN breaks down all of the latest injury news and return dates…

Luke Shaw

Luke Shaw was forced off 73 minutes into United’s match with Ipswich as a result of muscle tightness. However there are no major concerns over the left-back, who should be fine to start against Everton.

Mason Mount

Mason Mount picked up a foot injury during United’s pre-season run, and has been sidelined since. However, Carrick has now suggested that the attacking-midfielder is back in training and could be involved against Everton.

He said: “Mase is back around the group, which was great. Trained this week, so that’s a big positive for us.”

Potential return date: Sunday, September 6 vs Everton (A).

Carlos Baleba

Carlos Baleba was snapped up from Brighton & Hove Albion this summer in a deal worth up to £70million. However, the 22-year-old is yet to feature for Carrick’s first-team.

The Cameroonian suffered a minor ankle ligament injury in pre-season and continues to be unavailable for selection as a result. Speaking about Baleba’s issue at the end of August, Carrick said: “He’s got a little ankle issue.

“So, maybe a couple of weeks or so, maybe three weeks, we’ll see. But we knew that before, so it’s no major issue. It’ll be great to have him back when we can.”

Potential return date: Mid-to-late September.

Amad has also been absent for United this season as a result of a muscular injury picked up in training. It is unknown as to when the winger will be back in action.

Matthijs De Ligt

Matthijs De Ligt has failed to feature for United since last November as a result of a back injury. While Carrick has recently made it clear that the Dutch centre-half has returned to training, that the club are in no rush to force a return.

He said last month: “Matt’s obviously been out for a long period of time, but he’s training and great to have him back. He’s in good shape and moving in a good direction. So that’s really a good bonus for us, at this stage to have him back.”

Tom Heaton

Tom Heaton also sustained a hamstring injury in pre-season. It is unknown when the goalkeeper will return.

Manuel Ugarte

Manuel Ugarte sustained a ligament tear in his knee at the World Cup this summer, while on international duty for Uruguay. He is not expected to return until next year.

Aryna Sabalenka has joked that she might “get high” herself if the cannabis smell keeps drifting around the US Open after briefly stopping her third-round match to complain about it.The world No.1 was playing Kamilla Rakhimova in Louis Armstrong Stadium when she noticed the strong smell and approached chair umpire Eva Asderaki-Moore while leading 3-0 in the opening set.Sabalenka ultimately brushed off the interruption and produced one of her strongest performances of the tournament, beating Rakhimova 6-3, 6-4 to reach the fourth round without dropping a set.But the cannabis smell came up again in her post-match press conference, where Sabalenka revealed just how noticeable it had been.

Sabalenka explains why she stopped the match

Sabalenka initially believed the smell could have been coming from somewhere in the crowd.While leading 3-0, she called over Asderaki-Moore and told the umpire: “Someone is smoking weed, do you mind … because it’s so strong.”Officials briefly searched the crowd, although they were unable to identify the source.Speaking afterwards, Sabalenka said she had no issue with people enjoying themselves away from the competition.“I was like, guys you can do whatever. You can smoke, whatever. You can relax as much as you can. But please don’t do it around the tennis courts,” she said.“It’s a bit tricky to handle that smell while you’re trying to compete at your best.”The Belarusian was then asked how “high” she was compared with the other Grand Slam tournaments, prompting a laugh and a joke that suggested the smell had already become difficult to escape.“High? The level?” Sabalenka said. “Now I can only hear weed stuff. If they’re gonna keep smoking I might get high.”Sabalenka was also asked whether it was the first time she had encountered such a strong smell while playing in New York.“That strong? Yeah,” she replied.She suggested the wind may have played a part, leaving her uncertain about exactly where the smell had come from.“Also because it was a bit windy. I don’t know if it was coming from the crowd or the outside because wind blows it into the stadium,” Sabalenka said.“I just hope they’re gonna be a bit more aware of that stuff.”Cannabis is legal in New York, and the smell has become a familiar talking point around the US Open in recent years. However, smoking is prohibited inside the tournament grounds.British player Katie Boulter had also spoken about smelling cannabis around the outer courts earlier in the tournament, saying she had experienced it while playing on Court 17.

Sabalenka finds her rhythm as Townsend awaits

The interruption did little to derail Sabalenka’s progress.The two-time defending US Open champion faced a challenging test from Rakhimova but eventually came through in straight sets, backed by a superb serving display.She hit 10 aces, faced zero break points and moved into the round of 16 without dropping a set.That is significant given the form Sabalenka brought into New York. The world No.1 had not reached another final since winning Indian Wells and Miami back-to-back in March, leaving her searching for consistency as she attempted to defend her title.She is also fighting to retain the No.1 ranking. Sabalenka has held the top spot for 97 weeks, but will lose it unless she wins her third consecutive US Open title and world No.2 Elena Rybakina loses before the semi-finals.

Her next opponent will be home favourite Taylor Townsend, who reached the fourth round for a second consecutive year.Townsend followed up her run to the last 16 at last year’s US Open by producing another impressive tournament in New York, defeating 15th seed Diana Shnaider 6-2, 6-7 (3), 6-3.That means Sabalenka now has a considerably tougher test ahead, but after arriving at the US Open short of her best form, she is beginning to find some rhythm.And if the tennis continues to improve, perhaps the only thing Sabalenka will need to worry about in her next match is the opponent — rather than what is drifting in from somewhere around the stadium.

Amenable is poised to end a protracted period without finding the winner’s circle as he makes his first start for trainer Grahame Begg at Sandown.

The former charge of Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr is slated to run in the Group 3 Chautauqua Stakes (1300m) this Saturday, marking his return to racing after an eleven-month absence.

Amenable’s most recent win occurred at Caulfield over 1400m in August 2023. This followed his debut success over 1300m at Sandown in March 2022.

The gelding demonstrated considerable aptitude under the guidance of Price and Kent Jnr, competing in prestigious Group 1 events such as the Caulfield Guineas, Australian Guineas, Memsie Stakes, Toorak Handicap, George Ryder Stakes, and Stradbroke Handicap. He also achieved a second-place finish in the All-Aged Stakes.

However, in 24 career starts, he has only secured two victories alongside six minor placings.

Amenable’s last race was an eighth-place finish at Caulfield in November, which preceded a change of stables for the current campaign.

He has participated in two jump-outs to sharpen his fitness for Saturday’s engagement, finishing third in his most recent trial on August 19 behind Oliveanotherday.

“We gave him a long spell,” Begg conveyed.

“He’s had a few issues, but he has prepped up well and he ran third in a trial at Caulfield Heath the other day which was a very good trial.

“He’s going well.”

Begg highlighted that the team has managed Amenable’s training regimen conservatively due to his age.

“We’ve not worked him as hard being an older horse, keeping him happy within himself,” Begg stated.

“He loves wet ground and I’ve kept him on the grass for galloping rather than working him on synthetics where they can jar up.

“It’s a nice kick-off being 1300 and any give in the ground won’t do his chances any harm.”

Begg also has Royal Insignia entered for Saturday’s contest, but the gelding’s final acceptance will depend on the prevailing track conditions.

Royal Insignia’s last appearance at Sandown resulted in a win in the Group 3 Manfred Stakes (1200m) in January 2025. His most recent outing saw him finish second in the Aurie’s Star Handicap (1200m) at Flemington on August 1.

This sprinter also took part in a jump-out at Caulfield Heath, securing third place on August 19.

“He’s won at the track but needs good ground,” Begg remarked.

“The 1300 metres won’t worry him, but I won’t run him if it’s too wet, so he might have to wait for the Bobbie Lewis Quality (at Flemington) on Saturday week.”

Consider the current racing odds for the Chautauqua Stakes, as Amenable’s return could spark interest.

One of the 2026 Fantasy football sleepers the model is predicting: Colts wide receiver Alec Pierce. He was one of the top big-play receivers in the league last year, finishing second in the league with an average of 21.3 yards per reception. He finished the year as a top-25 Fantasy WR with a 47-1003-6 receiving line, cashing in on a four-year, $114 million contract extension. 

He is rehabbing an ankle injury in camp and the Colts added veteran Keenan Allen, which are some of the reasons that he’s slipped to an ADP of around No. 86 overall after starting near No. 70. Top 2026 Fantasy football breakouts

One of the 2026 Fantasy football breakouts the model is predicting: Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart, who is going off the board at pick No. 110. The second-year pro out of Ole Miss had a solid rookie season, throwing for 2,272 yards, 15 touchdowns and five interceptions. He added 487 yards and nine scores on the ground. He had a brief injury scare in Week 1 of the preseason, but was cleared and able to return to that game.

There’s certainly some ongoing injury risk, but with an upgraded supporting cast and the return of Malk Nabers (ACL), Dart has a chance to be a steal at his current ADP. Top 2026 Fantasy football busts

As for players to avoid, the model identifies Chiefs running back Kenneth Walker III. Walker’s Fantasy stock is sky high after he was dominant in the playoffs last year as a key piece of Seattle’s Super Bowl run. Now he joins a Kansas City backfield without a lot of competition, and he’s going off the board at pick No. 17 overall on average in Fantasy drafts, up three slots in recent days.

Andy Reid’s pass-first offense hasn’t been friendly to running backs, however, from a Fantasy standpoint as no Kansas City back has cleared 1,000 yards on the ground since 2017. Walker also brings some injury risk after missing at least one game in 2022, 2023 and 2024. Peter Uihlein, who has played in LIV Golf tournaments since 2023, played two rounds at a DP World Tour first-stage qualifying school event this week and was disqualified. 

Uihlein’s DQ came at Huddersfield Golf Club in Huddersfield, England. He opened with rounds of four-over 74 and three-over 73, then was booted from the event after he failed to show for his third round, Bunkered’s Josh Lees reported. 

The disqualification comes as the future of LIV Golf remains unclear. Two weeks ago, the league finished its fifth season of play, but it’s now trying to manage the loss of its primary backer, the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund. LIV CEO Scott O’Neil has said the league has received a signed term sheet with a lead investor, but has yet to name it, saying there’s “a very compressed timeline to get the deal done.”  

In light of the uncertainty, O’Neil also said he was confident that LIV had “a critical mass of the right players” for the future. A commitment deadline exists, though, he said, but didn’t say when that would be.  

“We have work to do,” O’Neil said. “We have things we have to accomplish. There are hurdles we have to jump over. It’s a very complex transaction we’ll have to deliver.

“But man, I wouldn’t bet against us.”

Uihlein was one of five LIV pros playing in DP World Tour first-stage qualifying school — at the Huddersfield event were Luis Masaveu and Josele Ballester, and next week at Golf-und Country Club Seddiner See in Michendorf, Germany, Michael La Sasso and Yosuke Asaji are signed up. Multiple outlets have also reported that the DP World Tour will resume fining and suspending its players who compete in LIV events; in February, eight players were given conditional releases. 

La Sasso’s entry is interesting. He won LIV’s season-ending event, and afterward, he said he wasn’t sure where he’d play next. 

“I’m honestly not sure,” he said. “I’m ready to go back home and spend some time around my family and the people I love.”

Uihlein has played in 131 DP World Tour events since turning pro in 2012, winning once, at the 2013 Madeira Islands Open, and he’s played in 128 PGA Tour events. This season with LIV, he finished 22nd in the season-points race.

It doesn’t seem like Alex Eala is bothered by the attention her rapidly rising popularity has brought and, along with it, the discussions about her. She’s locked in on making a deep run in this year’s US Open.

Although sometimes, life sends her a few reminders.

“Sometimes I forget I’m also kind of famous,” Eala told reporters Friday (Manila time), sounding a little sheepish as she recounted her experience meeting internet personality Nella Rose, who admitted she was a fan of Eala, too.

“It’s weird to think that some people I watch a lot know me, too,” she added.

Some reminders are a bit on the serious side.

There has been a lot of talk about a supposed preferential treatment handed to her by US Open organizers, who have assigned her to Louis Armstrong Stadium twice in two matches already, the second on Friday (Manila time), when she turned back Oleksandra Oliynykova of Ukraine, 6-1, 6-4.

The Armstrong venue is the second-biggest in the USTA Billie Jean King Tennis Center, which is located a short train ride from a Queens neighborhood in New York that is home to a strong Filipino presence. Only center court, Arthur Ashe Stadium, is bigger.

And as Eala marches on to her first weekend appearance at the year’s final Grand Slam, it is unlikely she’ll be slid down to the lower courts, given the huge demand for tickets to her matches and the way tournament organizers have dealt with the sudden disruption to the tennis economy brought about by the Filipino star’s popularity.

She was asked about that after the match, particularly because several Grand Slam winners have been playing on smaller courts in the first week of the tournament.

Eala refused to be drawn into the conversation, expressing only that she doesn’t take the experience for granted.

“I don’t make the schedules, but I’m grateful to be on Armstrong and to play on such an incredible court,” she said. “I don’t control the scheduling and my job is to be prepared for whatever court they put me in and whomever I’m against.”

Eala’s next opponent will be Iva Jovic, a close friend and part of their tennis clique of young women’s Tour standouts who love hanging out together.

“Off the court or on the court, I think the friends that I have, I really admire for what they’ve been through and what they go through,” Eala said.

Eala and her fans are headed to the weekend along with two-time champion Naomi Osaka and 2023 winner Coco Gauff.

“It means a lot for me to get to the weekend and this is my first time being in the third round here at the US Open,” the 21-year-old world No. 18 said.

Madison Keys also made it to the weekend—just barely.

Osaka recovered after a mid-match lapse to advance to the third round with a 6-2, 5-7, 6-1 victory over Katerina Siniakova.

Eala, the No. 17 seed, gave her passionate backers reason to cheer immediately by winning the first nine points against her Ukrainian opponent, who had won their only previous meeting.

“I think everybody represents something in their own way; I’m Filipino and I proudly represent that,” Eala said. “And a lot of the crowd here today is Filipino and I’m sure they share in that sentiment.”

Keys, the 2017 runner-up, was also on the verge of an early exit before erasing five match points and edging Anna Bondar 5-7, 6-4, 7-6 (10-5).

“That was something, huh? No stress, though, we all knew I had it right?” Keys joked to the fans afterward.

Gauff, who won her first major title at Flushing Meadows three years ago, moved on by beating Paula Badosa 6-4, 7-6 (5) under the lights on Ashe in just under two hours. Badosa was playing for a third consecutive day, forced to finish her first-round match Wednesday after play was suspended Tuesday because of rain that hampered the tournament for multiple days. —WITH REPORTS FROM AP
