Germany has appointed Jürgen Klopp as its new national team coach, handing the former Liverpool manager the responsibility of rebuilding a side that once again failed to make an impact at the FIFA World Cup.Klopp has signed a contract that will keep him in charge through the 2030 World Cup. Speaking after the announcement in Frankfurt on Friday, he described the appointment as “a big honor” and suggested it could be the final coaching job of his career.“Jürgen Klopp has no career after the national team,” he said. “Ideally, this will be the highlight of my career, my life, my working life. I will put everything into it that I possibly can.”He replaces Julian Nagelsmann, who resigned after Germany’s defeat to Paraguay saw the team fail to reach the last 16 of a men’s World Cup for the third tournament in a row.Klopp wants to reconnect Germany with its fansThis is Klopp’s first coaching role since stepping down as Liverpool manager in 2024, when he cited fatigue as the reason for leaving. During discussions over the Germany job, he said he felt “recharged”.Klopp indicated he could make unexpected squad selections and said his goal extends beyond winning matches. He wants supporters to enjoy watching the national team again. He admitted, “it’s been a while” since he regularly watched Germany outside major tournaments.“I want to create something with the national team that means that people go home after the game and think ‘That was really cool.’ That’s what I’d like to see happen,” he said.Klopp also said he would be willing to leave without any severance package if things did not work out. He also warned that he would resign if the media did not “leave my family in peace.”Klopp, known for his attacking style at Liverpool, became Germany’s preferred choice soon after Nagelsmann stepped down.Negotiations continued over several weeks while Klopp was in the United States working as a World Cup pundit for a German-language broadcaster.
