Hughes’ brothers mom responds to SOTU controversy after Trump’s remarks
NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!
After President Donald Trump called the men’s Olympic hockey team to congratulate them on their gold medal, he received criticism for what’s been deemed by some as disrespect toward the women’s team that had the same fate.
Three days before Jack Hughes’ golden goal, Megan Keller did the same thing to Canada in the women’s gold medal contest.
Trump told the men’s team after inviting them to Tuesday’s State of the Union that he’d “have” to invite the women’s team, otherwise “I probably would be impeached.”

Hughes’ mother, Ellen, a player development consultant for Team USA women’s ice hockey, was not bothered by Trump’s comments.
“These players, both the men and women, can bring so much unity to a group and to a country,” she told “Today.” “People that cheered on that don’t watch hockey, people that have politics on one side or on the other side, and that’s all both the men’s team and the women’s team care about.”
“If you could see what we see from the inside, and the men and women sharing, you know, dorm rooms and halls and flex floors and the camaraderie and the synergy and the way the women cheered on the men and the way the men cheered on the women — that’s what it’s all about,” she continued. “And the other things they cannot control. They care about humanity. They care about unity, and they care about the country.”

Hughes’ brother, Quinn, who scored an overtime goal against Sweden last week, said it was “amazing to spend some time” with the women’s team in the Olympic village.
“And then obviously watch them, me and Jack were there, we watched them win the gold medal. They came to our game and were able to watch us,” he said. “So just the support back and forth, just to get to know them a little better was special, too.”
The women’s team declined an invite to Washington, D.C., citing schedules. Several members of the men’s team will be in attendance after partying in Miami on Monday.

Aeliana poised for history in 2026 Rosehill Ranvet Stakes
During spring, it was Via Sistina leading the way. This time around, Autumn Glow has been the star.
Aeliana has remained overshadowed by two exceptional stablemates through her recent six starts, though on Saturday at Rosehill, the mare emerges prominently in the Ranvet Stakes (2000m).
In addition to targeting her first triumph post-thrashing ATC Australian Derby rivals a year ago, she could enable James McDonald to tie Damien Oliver’s 129 Group 1 wins Australian record.
McDonald, fresh off victory in the Coolmore Classic last weekend via Lazzura, eyes that one more Group 1 to level with Oliver, commencing his five such rides at Rosehill aboard Aeliana.
Her trainer Chris Waller trusts the mare to supply the champion jockey’s key moment, as do gamblers backing her firmly at $1.65.
“She has come back stronger, and her first two runs have been superb,” Waller said.
“She’s got the best form heading into a Ranvet.
“This time last year, she ran second by a nostril on the same day in the Rosehill Guineas to Broadsiding and came out with an emphatic Derby win.
“She is where she needs to be.”
Aeliana headlines McDonald’s outstanding quintet of Group 1 engagements Saturday, all under Sydney’s champion trainer.
If she falls short for the tying win, Autumn Boy as Rosehill Guineas favourite gives McDonald his prompt opportunity to surpass Oliver, then Autumn Glow, the unbeaten mare, in the George Ryder Stakes (1500m).
The jockey’s further Group 1 hopes rest on Fireball in the Golden Slipper (1200m) and Generosity in the Galaxy (1100m), both outsiders at double-figure quotes needing shocks.
Potentially Aeliana’s sternest test is barnmate Lindermann ($9), who has notched two wins and two places in four Rosehill 2000m appearances.
After a creditable third on return, the gelding disappointed in the Verry Elleegant Stakes (1600m) last time, yet Waller reports full recovery and a battling effort ahead.
“He’s fine. He’s had an ECG and everything is normal so he will definitely be there,” Waller said.
Trinity College, the stable trio’s outsider, brings a Group 3 win at the distance from overseas, with solid training reports since his Aussie bow last month.

England squad: Thomas Tuchel explains squad selection
England manager Thomas Tuchel explains his decisions for selecting Manchester United players Harry Maguire and Kobbie Mainoo for his upcoming camp.
He also says it was a “tough decision” to not include Trent Alexander-Arnold in the expanded 35-man squad.
The Three Lions continue their World Cup preparations with friendlies at Wembley Stadium against Uruguay on 27 March and Japan on 31 March.
Teams must submit their final World Cup squads by Saturday, 30 May.

Trent Alexander-Arnold’s England World Cup hopes in doubt, so what now for Real Madrid defender?
Tuchel, who has made clear his love of the physical nature of English football alongside his want of a solid backline referenced Jarrell Quansah, Djed Spence and Tino Livramento as the players in front of Alexander-Arnold.
And although predominately a centre-back, Aston Villa’s Ezri Konsa played at right-back in the comfortable win over Wales in October and is an option there too.
“A slightly different profile,” Tuchel said when asked by BBC Sport about what the other players bring.
“It’s not what Trent cannot offer us. I know very well what Trent can offer.
“I suffered when he played against my teams with Liverpool. I know very well about his strengths and what he can give.”
Livramento played the second-half of Newcastle’s 7-2 defeat by Barcelona in the second leg of their Champions League tie on Wednesday, but he has already impressed the England boss.
Tuchel is big on players having “credit” for what they have previously done for him and Livramento played in England’s 5-0 away win against Serbia, arguably the most impressive performance since he took charge.
“It is a sporting decision that we stick with Quansah, Livramento and Spence who all can play in camp in the right full-back position,” added the German.
“We have evidence with how good we were in September, October and November and the players who are in camp have to push for their ticket. They have to show again that they deserve this spot.”

IPL 2026: KKR suffer Matheesha Pathirana blow, reveal fresh details | Cricket News
Matheesha Pathirana is set to miss the opening phase of IPL 2026, with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) head coach Abhishek Nayar confirming in pre-season press conference held on friday that the pacer is likely to be available only from mid-April. Pathirana, who was ruled out of the 2026 T20 World Cup due to a calf strain, is currently undergoing rehabilitation under the supervision of Sri Lanka Cricket. He had featured in just three matches in the tournament before being helped off the field during a game against Australia.
KKR await fitness update
Providing an update on the young fast bowler’s recovery, Nayar said: “The latest update that we know is he’s obviously with the Sri Lankan cricket board and they took out his rehab, and the latest communication that we’ve had is, hopefully, somewhere mid-April is when they feel he’ll be match fit. That’s what we know as of now.”
Sri Lanka Cricket issues NOC update for IPL 2026
Dushmantha Chameera, Pathum Nissanka, and Kamindu Mendis, who have successfully completed their physical performance tests, have been issued NOCs to participate in the IPL. Nuwan Thushara’s eligibility for a No Objection Certificate (NOC) to participate in the IPL will be subject to the outcome of his Physical Performance Test.”Wanindu Hasaranga, Eshan Malinga, and Matheesha Pathirana, who have requested NOCs to participate in IPL 2026, are yet to undergo the Physical Performance Test, as they are still undergoing rehabilitation to recover from injuries sustained. The respective players will undergo the tests upon completion of their recovery and rehabilitation programs,” said SLC in a statement on Friday.
“Firstly, it is a big blow” – Nayar
Nayar admitted that Harshit’s absence comes as a major setback for the KKR:“Firstly, it is a big blow, because Harshit has been an integral part of this team for the last couple of seasons, including the championship season. He’s grown a lot as a cricketer over the years, so it’s not easy to replace him.”He added that the team management is actively exploring replacement options: “Having said that, over the last few days, we’ve looked at a few bowlers. We’re trying to evaluate, with the help of the leadership group, who fits in and who can do that role to the best of their prowess.”“We’re still evaluating that and haven’t made that decision yet, but hopefully we’ll identify someone soon who can make a difference to this squad.”
Bravo backs squad depth despite setbacks
KKR mentor Dwayne Bravo struck a confident tone: “In any tournament with any team, once you lose some of the key bowling options, these are things you plan for, but also things you have to accept, the good thing about Indian cricket, especially at the moment, is that there is a lot of depth.”Bravo pointed to several Indian pacers who could step up: “So there are some guys, as the coach mentioned, that we are definitely looking at to fill the spot – the likes of Umran Malik.”“These guys are also players who have represented the national team at some point in time and have also played in the IPL before. They are young, exciting talents. So, for me personally, I’m happy to work with this group of fast bowlers.” he added.

Bruno Guimaraes to Man United latest, £69m transfer ultimatum, Casemiro’s crucial role
Need to know
Newcastle midfielder Bruno Guimaraes has been linked with a move to Manchester United this summer as a replacment for Casemiro
Everything you need to know following the news surrounding Manchester United’s transfer pursuit of Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes…
- £69m ‘advanced talks’: Manchester United are reportedly in advanced talks to sign Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimaraes for a fee of £69million as a primary replacement for the outgoing Casemiro. However, United could have to compete with interest from Real Madrid, along with Newcastle’s desire to tie Guimaraes down to a new improved contract, which would complicate any potential summer move.
- Shearer’s stance: Newcastle legend Alan Shearer has warned that the club faces a battle to keep star players like Guimaraes if they fail to secure European football for next season. While dismissing some of the advanced talks reports as “rubbish”, Shearer acknowledged that the “noise” surrounding a potential £69m move to Manchester United will only intensify as the summer transfer window approaches.
- Casemiro’s influence: United are reportedly hoping that departing midfielder Casemiro can act as an agent to help convince his Brazil team-mate Guimaraes to choose Old Trafford over interest from Real Madrid. The Newcastle captain has previously cited Casemiro as an idol and inspiration, potentially giving United a crucial advantage in securing the £69m-rated star as his successor this summer.
- European need: Former United player Danny Simpson has suggested that Newcastle may struggle to keep star midfielders Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali if they fail to secure European football for next season. With Guimaraes identified as a top priority to replace the departing Casemiro, the Magpies’ current league position and recent Champions League exit could force them to sell their key assets to bigger clubs.
- Contract latest: The Chronicle suggest that Newcastle have initiated contact with Guimaraes regarding a contract extension beyond 2028, despite the intense speculation linking him with Manchester United. Newcastle sources have labelled transfer claims as inaccurate while emphasising their desire to secure the Brazilian’s long-term future.
- Howe reacts: Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe has branded reports of advanced talks between Guimaraes and Manchester United as “nonsense,” labelling the rumours as “totally disrespectful” to his captain. Howe insisted that Guimaraes remains fully committed to Newcastle and is currently focused solely on recovering from injury rather than entertaining “unwanted” transfer distractions.

Is Luka Doncic the NBA MVP after 60-point night? ESPN experts weigh in
The Los Angeles Lakers are rolling. Led by star guard Luka Doncic’s 60 points and LeBron James’ triple-double, the Lakers got past the Miami Heat 134-126 on March 19 for their eighth consecutive win.
The triumph was even more impressive considering it came just one night after a big 124-116 road victory over the Houston Rockets.

Doncic knocked down 18-of-30 shots, including 9-of-17 on 3-pointers, and contributed seven rebounds, three assists and five steals. The scoring output tied for the second most of Doncic’s career. Additionally, he has scored at least 30 points in each game of the Lakers’ win streak.
MORE: LeBron James shares surprise update on NBA ownership plans
On ESPN’s “First Take,” NBA analysts Stephen A. Smith and Brian Windhorst tackled the topic of whether Doncic should be considered a top candidate for league MVP.
“I don’t think we have a choice,” Smith said. “I’m ashamed that I hadn’t brought up Luka for league MVP consideration sooner than this morning. That ends now. That gets corrected right now. Luka Doncic has been sensational.”
James recorded 19 points, 15 rebounds and 10 assists while tying Robert Parish’s all-time NBA record for games played with 1,611. Los Angeles erased a 15-point deficit to hand the Heat their third straight defeat.
Windhorst praised the Lakers for their toughness and resolve in the back-to-back efforts.
“I can’t tell you how much I loved watching them compete the last three games, and Luka especially,” Windhorst said. “The way he approached this game was absolutely awe-inspiring.”
Windhorst added, “Some of the shots that he made in this game were absolutely incredible.”
Still, Windhorst said Shai Gilgeous-Alexander of the Oklahoma City Thunder is his leader in the NBA MVP race. Gilgeous-Alexander won the award in 2024-25.
“Shai plays both ends, and his consistency is unbelievable,” he said.
According to DraftKings Sportsbook, Doncic has surged into second place in NBA MVP odds. Gilgeous-Alexander still leads at -1000, trailed by Doncic (+1500), the San Antonio Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama (+2500) and the Denver Nuggets’ Nikola Jokic (+3500).
At 45-25, the Lakers sit in the third place in the Western Conference. They return to action at 7 p.m. ET Saturday on the road against the Orlando Magic.

Nebraska wins first NCAA Tournament game in program history, dominating Troy
NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!
The No. 4 Nebraska Cornhuskers made easy work of the No. 13 Troy Trojans in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, taking them down, 76-47, to keep their March Madness dreams alive.
In doing so, history was made for the program.
The Cornhuskers have made nine trips to “The Dance,” beginning in 1986, yet there were no wins to be found for them in those appearances.

But there was no doubt about Nebraska on Thursday despite a hot start by Troy in this contest.
Pryce Sandfort, Nebraska’s sharpshooter, was a main reason why they ran away with the game. He was efficient from beyond the arc in the first half, hitting five of his eight three-point attempts and notching 17 points over the first 20 minutes.
Sandfort went on to score 23 points, as he took a spot on the bench in the second half when head coach Fred Hoiberg knew he could rest his starters with a hefty lead.
Meanwhile, Troy struggled after that start, shooting just 28% from the field for the whole game, going just 13-of-46 including 8-of-28 from three-point territory.

For the Cornhuskers, Jamarques Lawrence also added 13 points on 4-of-8 shooting, while Braden Frager came off the bench for 13 points as well.
The last time Nebraska made the tournament was in 2024, where they couldn’t overcome Texas A&M in a 98-93 loss. And before that, the Cornhuskers were only able to make it in 2014, where they fell to No. 6 Baylor, 74-60.
But the Cornhuskers felt different coming into the tournament this year, going 27-6 in a very successful season. However, they fell to Purdue in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten Tournament – the No. 2 seed falling to No. 7.
There was a chance this Cornhuskers squad could’ve been a much higher seed if not for that loss to the Boilermakers, but they got the ball rolling in a historic way on Thursday.

Akron vs Texas Tech, Clemson vs Iowa: Best Bets for Friday
The Akron Zips will take on the Texas Tech Red Raiders in a highly anticipated 12-5 matchup on Friday. It’s a game between two high-end offenses that love putting points on the board.
Akron’s going to try to control the pace of this game, pushing it as much as possible. I expect them to be able to do so, getting to the rim while giving up open looks from deep to Texas Tech. Ultimately, I expect good looks early in the shot clock for both teams, and I don’t believe either is going to pass them up to slow the game down.
Akron struggles to defend the arc, and that’s where Texas Tech should be able to do plenty of damage. They rank fourth in the NCAA in three-point percentage (39.3%) this season. They have two players hitting over 40% of their threes, while making over 100 on the season. Jaylen Petty is also shooting 37.2% from deep on volume.
On the other side, the Zips have flashed the ability to score from anywhere on the floor. The Red Raiders do make their opponents take tough twos, but Akron’s pace should help ease things up for their offense.
Ultimately, this is a spot where Texas Tech can near triple digits if their shot is falling, and I expect Akron to be able to find plenty of buckets as well.

Clemson & Iowa Under 130.5 Total Points
These are two high-end defenses that love to slow the pace down. The pace is going to be the key, as it’s going to limit opportunities overall. Iowa runs their offense at one of the slowest paces in the NCAA, and Clemson isn’t a team that’s going to push the pace in this game.
There aren’t going to be extra possessions or easy baskets for either team. Both are elite on the glass, limiting their opponents’ offensive rebounds. They are also safe with the ball, limiting turnovers.
Both offenses are going to need to make tough shots on limited opportunities against good defenses. The other key is that neither team is elite where they have to beat their opponents.
Teams can beat Iowa at the line, but Clemson doesn’t draw an elite number of fouls. When they do get to the line, they shoot only 72.6%. On the other side, teams can beat Clemson with the deep ball, and Iowa only has two true shooters on their team.
This game feels like a slow, grind-it-out contest, where both teams are going to struggle to put points on the board.

Duke Survives Upset Scare, Now Set to Roll Past TCU
Duke has been the best team in the country this season. It’s not much of a hot-take to make that claim. However, on the first day of the tournament, every flaw that we’ve seen from the Blue Devils bubbled to the surface and almost caused them to have a wildly embarrassing first-round exit.
Siena had Duke on the ropes. They held a 13-point lead in the second half, the largest deficit that Duke had faced all season long. It was a disaster of a performance for the Blue Devils, who were playing what was essentially a home game in Greenville, South Carolina. Jon Scheyer simply didn’t have Duke prepared for the moment.
When interviewed at halftime, Maliq Brown said the Blue Devils were dealing with some nerves and believed Siena would be a cakewalk.
I’d love to argue that something like this would never happen under Coach K, but he did have a team that went down to 15-seed Lehigh. If Duke has a performance like this in any other round, their time in the dance will be short-lived, but maybe this was the wakeup call they needed. You have to respect every team in your way in March Madness, and TCU is going to be a significant jump in talent from a Sienna team that essentially played their whole starting lineup for the entirety of the game.
The Horned Frogs physically dominated Ohio State for most of the matchup, with elite ball pressure from their guards on defense and aggressive post play, where they dominated the glass and garnered 12 offensive rebounds against the Buckeyes. Siena seemed to run out of gas in the final 10 minutes of this game, but TCU found its second wind in the final 10 minutes of theirs. They won’t just fade away if they pull away early.
Freshman Cayden Boozer was impressive in his first tournament game, doing a great job of replacing Caleb Foster as the offensive playcaller; however, he struggled to get the rest of the team involved. Cam Boozer, who will likely be the national player of the year, had a nice stat line, but was honestly bullied by Francis Folefac and Riley Mulvey. Duke will have to do a better job at getting him better looks, and Cam will have to do a better job of taking care of the ball.
Hopefully, Duke learns from their first-round mistakes and generates offensive rim pressure from start to finish against TCU. When Boozer and company attacked on offense, Sienna stood no chance of stopping them. With that being said, Duke -11.5 is the freest bet of all time. This team was the best in the nation all season for a reason. I don’t think they’ll put up two stinkers in a row on the big stage.

Ibrahima Konate: Liverpool ‘disgusted’ by racist abuse towards France defender
Liverpool have said they are “appalled and disgusted” by racist abuse directed towards defender Ibrahima Konate on social media.
The France international was involved in a challenge with Galatasaray striker Victor Osimhen during the first half of Liverpool‘s 4-0 Champions League win at Anfield on Wednesday.
Osimhen was subbed off at half-time and it was later revealed by the Turkish side that he had fractured his forearm.
It led to Konate receiving racist abuse online which Liverpool said was “completely unacceptable”.
“It is dehumanising, cowardly and rooted in hate,” the club said on Friday.
“Racism has no place in football, no place in society and no place anywhere – online or offline.
“Our players are not targets. They are human beings. The abuse that continues to be directed at players, often hidden behind anonymous accounts, is a stain on the game and on the platforms that allow it to persist.”
The club said they were offering Konate their “full support” and working with the relevant authorities to identify those responsible.
Last month, police confirmed they were investigating after four Premier League players experienced online racial abuse in one weekend.
Osimhen appeared to fall awkwardly following a challenge with Konate in the eighth minute, but he played on until he was replaced by Leroy Sane at the break.
Galatasaray head coach Okan Buruk complained about referee Pawel Raczkowski’s decision-making following the Nigeria striker’s injury.
“Looking at Osimhen’s position, we saw that Konate was able to commit these fouls very easily, he could easily apply any kind of foul,” Buruk said.
“While we were expecting the best referee in the world, perhaps one of the worst referees officiated the game.”
Liverpool won the last-16 tie 4-1 on aggregate and will face holders Paris St-Germain in next month’s quarter-finals.
The club called on social media companies to “take responsibility and act now” to prevent racist abuse being directed towards players online.
“These platforms have the power, the technology and the resources to prevent this abuse, yet too often they fail to do so,” Liverpool said.
“Allowing racist hatred to spread unchecked is a choice – and it is one that continues to harm players, families and communities across the game.
“The current situation cannot be allowed to continue. It must be confronted, challenged and eradicated – not tomorrow, but now.”
