Spain’s 1-0 win over Argentina in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final extended popular football game EA Sports FC’s streak of correctly predicting the tournament winners.

The match between La Roja and La Albiceleste was a hard-fought affair that saw Enzo Fernandez get sent off in the dying embers of normal time (90+3′). After dominating the entire game and even having a goal disallowed (96′), Luis de la Fuente’s side finally got their winner through substitute Ferran Torres (106′).

EA Sports FC, which has been a fan favourite for decades, has been running a FIFA World Cup simulation since the 2010 edition. They predicted every tournament winner correctly between 2010 and 2022; just one week before the 2026 edition (June 6), they picked Spain to win it all.

After the final, fans took to X to express their disbelief as well as to make some ironic comments about the game. One fan wrote:

“Nahhhhh I forgot about this, wtaf. HOW DO YOU KEEP DOING THIS.”

Formerly known as FIFA during their contract with football’s global governing body, the gameplay has long been a source of criticism for EA Sports FC. Referencing that, one supporter wrote:

“If only fifa gameplay was as good as your predictions.”

Popular EASFC content creator @NickRTFM claimed:

“At least you’re good at something.”

Another supporter remarked:

“5 in a row in insane, 20 years worth of winners.”

Spain have become the first team to hold the UEFA EURO and FIFA World Cup titles at the same time on two different occasions. While West Germany (World Cup 1974, EURO 1976) and France (World Cup 1998, EURO 2000) have done it once, the Iberian nation has done it twice (EURO 2008, World Cup 2010, EURO 2012; EURO 2024, World Cup 2026).

After scoring the only goal in the final against Argentina, Spain forward Ferran Torres claimed that his side were ‘destined’ to win the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Barcelona man received a lot of backlash for his inconsistent performances through the tournament. However, he stepped up when it mattered most, lashing Nico Williams’ cushioned header into the net deep in extra time (106′) to secure his nation’s second World Cup title.

After the game, an emotional Torres said (via ESPN):

“I think in the end the goal came from 47 million (Spanish) people, not just those of us that are here. Today destiny was written, it was made for us to win. We’re far from our people today but we tried to be as close as possible to them… I’ve been criticized throughout the whole tournament but, as I said before, destiny was written.”

Every FIFA World Cup winner in history has now won it on multiple occasions besides one – England, whose only triumph came in 1966.
