King confident Oh Diamond Lil can shine in 2026 Mona Lisa Stakes

Published

on

Stakes-winning mare Oh Diamond Lil, described by jockey Rachel King as “a bit of a weirdo”, is in the right mindset to recapture her best form in the Mona Lisa Stakes at Wyong. King was aboard the David Pfieffer-trained galloper when she secured her most significant victory in the Group 3 Tibbie Stakes (1400m) at Newcastle last spring.

The six-year-old’s subsequent performances have been varied, with King attributing this more to the mare’s mental state than her physical condition. “She’s a bit of a weirdo but the guy who has been riding her work has done a really good job with her this ‘prep’,” King commented. “She’s still got her ways about her, but when she’s on the track she has been more relaxed than ever.”

King further explained, “At the moment they’ve got her in a really good headspace and she’s back to firing like she was when I was last winning on her. She’s fit and healthy and looks great. She has done plenty of work, she’s had good, solid trials and she’s ready to go.”

Oh Diamond Lil’s last appearance was a fourth-place finish in the Magic Millions National Classic (1600m) at Eagle Farm in June. Despite this, she has won both her recent trials and maintains a strong record when racing fresh.

Bella Montagna, King’s mount for the Wyong Gold Cup (2100m), is also returning from a Queensland campaign. This included a second in the Premier’s Cup (2400m) and a fifth in the Brisbane Cup (3200m), both times behind Alalcance. Given this residual fitness, Bella Montagna is expected to be a strong contender.

“Distance-wise, it’s the right trip for her (first-up) and I’m sure coming from Gai and Adrian’s she’ll be fit enough first-up,” King stated. “She is definitely improving and she has each prep. Even last prep, she improved throughout the whole preparation.”

She added, “I was pretty confident going into a Brisbane Cup it would suit her. She probably didn’t quite see out the two miles trying it the first time, but I think she’ll benefit a lot from it and she’s the kind of mare who can get over that trip eventually. It will be interesting to see how she’s come back having had that little bit of a break. I think she has probably strengthened up a bit.”

King is aiming for a repeat of her 2020 success in the Wyong Cup-Mona Lisa Stakes double with Paths of Glory and Asiago. The Mona Lisa Stakes is approaching, and interested parties can find competitive racing odds on Australian betting sites.

Wisconsin vs. Notre Dame odds, picks, prediction, betting preview, start time for Week 1 college football

Published

on

Notre Dame started 0-2 last year, which resulted in it missing out on the College Football Playoff, and the Fighting Irish will try to avoid another slow start when they begin the 2026 college football season against Wisconsin on Sunday, Sept. 6. The Badgers finished 4-8 in 2025, so there’s a lot of pressure on Luke Fickell to get things right in 2026 after he joined Wisconsin with high expectations after a great run at Cincinnati. Notre Dame enters 2026 as the No. 4-ranked team in the AP preseason poll. Kickoff from Lambeau Field in Green Bay is set for 7:30 p.m. ET. Bet on Wisconsin vs. Notre Dame and more college football games with the FanDuel promo code to receive bonus bets:

Notre Dame is a 20.5-point favorite, per the latest FanDuel Sportsbook odds, and the Over/Under for total points scored is 46.5. The Irish won 10 straight to wrap up 2025, while the Badgers only won two conference games in 2026 and are trying to move up the standings in a crowded Big Ten.

Wisconsin vs. Notre Dame betting preview

These teams are entering 2026 in very different situations.

The Irish were almost certainly one of the 12 best teams in the country last year, but losses to Miami and Texas A&M — both of which made the College Football Playoff — kept Notre Dame out of the postseason. It was clear that the program was upset, as the Irish opted not to participate in a bowl game. They now enter the 2026 season as the No. 4 team in the country and as a team that many believe can feasibly win the national championship. Notre Dame lost its top playmakers on offense to the NFL Draft in Jeremiyah Love and Jadarian Price, but quarterback CJ Carr was one of the best passers in the country in 2025 and may very well be a Heisman Trophy contender in 2026.

The Badgers have a lot of work to do to right the ship. Fickell was hired to great fanfare after a great tenure at Cincinnati that included three 11-win seasons and a CFP appearance, but his best season in Wisconsin was 7-6 in 2023, and the Badgers have missed out on a bowl game each of the last two years. Offense was a major issue for the Badgers last year, and they hope transfer quarterback Colton Joseph can lead the way to more points in 2026. Joseph shined at Old Dominion last year, passing for over 2,600 yards and rushing for over 1,000 with 34 total touchdowns. Use the BetMGM bonus code CBSSPORTS to get bonus bets when wagering on Wisconsin-Notre Dame and more college football games:

Wisconsin vs. Notre Dame picks, prediction

Notre Dame -20.5

I’m not sure if there’s a more motivated team in all of the land than Notre Dame right now. The Fighting Irish were snubbed from a CFP appearance last year, and they certainly had the talent to make a deep run. After being skipped over, the Irish begin their revenge tour against Wisconsin at historic Lambeau Field in what’s effectively a home game for the Badgers.

Now, I think Wisconsin will be much better off in 2026 than the team was in 2025, thanks in large part to Joseph’s presence at quarterback. He’s an elite dual-threat option who raises both the floor and ceiling of this Wisconsin offense. However, I’m not sure if Joseph alone will be able to help Wisconsin keep this game competitive for a full 60 minutes.

Notre Dame is a massive money line betting favorite, and as such, there’s really not any value in backing the Irish straight up. Instead, we’ll look at the spread betting line, which sits at 20.5. That’s a big number, to be sure, but Notre Dame is going to be on a mission this year, and the Irish are out to prove a point. After starting 0-2, the Irish won 10 in a row to conclude the regular season last year. It should be noted that of those 10 wins, eight came by at least 21 points, and all were by double-digit margins. Carr operated this offense at a high level, and Marcus Freeman is one of the best developers of talent and masters of roster building that the sport has. All of that should be on full display at Lambeau Field on Sunday.

4, 6, 4! Vaibhav Sooryavanshi takes on Mohammed Siraj, lights up Chepauk in Duleep Trophy final – Watch

Published

on

Teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi took on senior India pacer Mohammed Siraj and hit him for three boundaries in a single over on Day 1 of the Duleep Trophy 2026 final between East Zone and South Zone at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Sunday.

Opening the innings alongside Abhimanyu Easwaran, Sooryavanshi gave East Zone a fiery start in the first session. The pair continued the good partnership they had built during the knockout matches and helped their team settle quickly.

The 15-year-old reached 20-run mark at a brisk pace before attacking Siraj in the seventh over.

He began the over with a cut shot past point for four. On the very next ball, he punished a full delivery by clearing his front leg and hitting a straight six over long-off.

Katie Taylor’s farewell was a night of magic, impossibility and buried hatchets

Published

on

On Saturday night, Katie Taylor finally walked away from the sport she changed after a night of magic moments in front of 80,000 fanatics at Croke Park in Dublin.

Her 30 years in boxing gyms and rings, at tournaments, on podiums, making history and creating memories all came to an end with a final victory against Flora Pili. The fight was only a sideshow on a night of adulation.

At the midnight hour, under a clear sky, and with the echo of Westlife still in the air, Taylor was loaded up with all four world title belts; it was win No 26, world-title fight No 21, but against a backdrop of tears and emotion, none of the numbers mattered. It was a retirement party like no other in the history of boxing, in a city that knows how to throw a party.

Taylor is 40 now, a wise veteran, and her story is the story of women’s boxing, the story of how a little girl – posing as a little boy to get a fight – changed the boxing landscape forever.

Late on Saturday night, the ring cleared during the post-fight celebrations and Taylor, after circling several times and nodding at the roaring crowd, placed her gloves in the very centre of the ring she has dominated for so long. She will never return to fighting and we will miss her.

Her entrance on Saturday, through the same tunnel that Muhammad Ali used in his 1972 fight at the sacred venue, was spectacular. She looked relaxed, which seems an impossibility, but Taylor is always the calmest soul at the centre of any boxing storm.

She fought sensibly against Pili, using her head and her feet as much as her fists. The result was never in doubt on a night when a nation stopped and watched – they had been stopping and watching in Ireland long before Taylor won her Olympic gold medal in London in 2012.

Taylor has inspired a generation of athletes across all sports. And not just wide-eyed, tiny girls with dreams of being the next Katie Taylor in the ring. She was a local hero as a teenager, a national hero as a young woman, and a global hero for the last 10 years; she has no rivals for that title in the sport she made.

In the packed ring at the end, as family members piled in for one final embrace and hug, a man made his way to one of the neutral corners. His name is Peter Taylor, her father and first coach. Peter left the family home over 10 years ago, and on Saturday Katie praised him and his role in her success; it was the first open display of affection for her father since the split.

It was also the very first time he had seen her box as a professional. There were multiple emotional tales in that ring and in the iconic venue.

“We will never see another Katie Taylor, we will never see another night like this,” said Eddie Hearn, her promoter.

The crowd of 80,000 were reluctant to leave at the end, loitering in their thousands, singing and shouting and savouring the moment. Why leave that magical place? Why turn away when Taylor was still in the ring, posing for the cameras and smiling. Why?

Taylor was still in the ring nearly 30 minutes after the fight finished and then she left for the very last time and went on the slowest exit in history, shaking hands and stopping for pictures with those lucky enough to get close to the ringside barrier. Perhaps she also wanted to enjoy every last moment of her life as a boxer.

As midnight approached, it really was the end of an astonishing boxing career, and then Taylor went down another tunnel and out of our lives. Croke Park suddenly felt very empty, but the spirit of Katie Taylor will live forever in that grand home of Irish sport.

College football winners, losers in Week 1: Dabo, Clemson in big trouble

Published

on

After a long offseason filled with lawsuits and nonsense, Week 1 offered an oasis of football. And of course, the highest game of the evening centered on the most famous coach in college football: Lane Kiffin at LSU

But while LSU came away with a massive 51-10 victory, they were far from the only storyline of the weekend. A new generation of underclassmen signal-callers established themselves, and the wide receivers might be even better. Hot conditions around the country made for some hilarious visuals, especially with inflated scores.

On the field, UMass provided one of the biggest upsets of the past few seasons, picking up the program’s first win over a Power Four opponent. The stars were out and about, putting up big numbers and swinging games.

Here are the biggest winners and losers of Week 1 heading into primetime.

Loser: Clemson coach Dabo Swinney

Coming off a disappointing season and heading into a hornet’s nest, expectations were unbelievably low. Really, all Clemson had to do was remain competitive and look like they belonged on the field. They were 10-point underdogs, but LSU had a brand new roster to work through.

Instead, it went just about as unbelievably bad as it could possibly go. Lane Kiffin absolutely obliterated Dabo Swinney in a 51-10 final. Clemson’s only first-half points came after a tipped ball interception on the first drive of the game. Nine of the next 10 drives ended in punts; the other was an interception. The Tigers had fewer than 100 yards entering the fourth quarter.

If Swinney’s seat wasn’t already blazing, now it is. On Oct. 3, Clemson plays against No. 7 Miami. If the team can’t look more capable by then, the Tigers may seriously have to consider moving on from Swinney.

Loser: Replay refs

Look, there’s a chance that the officials had a different view, a different clock, something. But to the rest of us out here, the final second added back in Michigan’s stunning Hail Mary win against Western Michigan was absolutely inexplicable. Screenshots of the clock seem to confirm that time had run out on the clock, which cost WMU one of the biggest upset bids of the 21st Century. The Broncos will still be plenty competitive in the MAC, and they showed the upside of contending for the Group of Six’s playoff spot. But a win over Michigan would have been a heck of a silver bullet.

Winner: Young quarterbacks

A number of underclassman quarterbacks got on the field for the first time in Week 1, and there were some encouraging signs. Alabama’s Keelon Russell showed off impressive arm and legs with 342 total yards and a touchdown in a 48-10 win over East Carolina. Tennessee got an explosive 294 total yards and five touchdowns from Faizon Brandon, the top recruit in the 2026 recruiting class.

Florida’s Aaron Philo also had a great debut in a 66-21 win over FAU. In his first game as the full-time starter, Texas Tech’s Will Hammond completed his first 14 passes and threw for 298 yards in a win over Abilene Christian. There will be plenty of greater tests ahead, but the next generation of signal-callers is off to a good start.

Loser: Pushup form

Like many mascots, Kansas State’s Willie Wildcat does pushups after every score. Following a 71-3 win over Nicholls, Willie was understandably exhausted. Their pushup form may have suffered a little. Star quarterback Avery Johnson scored four touchdowns in the win in a perfect tuneup spot.

Not to be outdone, LSU’s cheer team was also seen struggling on the sideline while doing their push-ups after the Tigers took a 51-3 lead in the fourth quarter. It adds up!

Winner: Heisman hopeful receivers

Could this be the year of the wide receiver in college football? If Week 1 is any indication, we’re in for a special run. Miami sophomore Malachi Toney got things started on Friday night with a school record 229 yards to go with 11 catches and three touchdowns in a 42-6 win over Stanford. Not to be outdone, consensus WR1 Jeremiah Smith was otherworldly, posting eight catches for 151 yards and two touchdowns — all in the first half — against Ball State

In his Texas debut, wide receiver Cam Coleman had two touchdowns with teammate Ryan Wingo adding 121 yards. USC freshman Trent Mosley also added his name to the list of great national receivers with his second straight 100-yard game to start his career. That doesn’t even count RutgersKJ Duff (9 catches, 196 yards, 3 TDs), Oregon’s Jeremiah McClellan

The sport has been moving in the direction of great wide receivers for years, and 2026 could be the best year yet.

Loser: Oklahoma State

Expectations were high for the Cowboys after one of the highest-profile offseasons in the Big 12. Oklahoma State imported the core players and brain trust from North Texas, including five-star transfer quarterback Drew Mestemaker and No. 1 transfer running back Caleb Hawkins. And yet, Week 1 looked an awful lot like the disaster of last season.

Oklahoma State lost a stunning 24-10 game against Tulsa, dropping to the Golden Hurricanes for the second straight season. That marks the first losing streak to Tulsa since 1952. Mestemaker was thoroughly outplayed by Tulsa quarterback Baylor Hayes, and the defense allowed a 29-yard touchdown rush to put the game away in the fourth.

First-year coach Eric Morris imported more than 90 new players to Stillwater in his first offseason. Clearly, the transition will come with growing pains.

Winner: QB Mason Heintschel, Pittsburgh

Heintschel was one of the most impressive freshmen in America to close last season, and coach Pat Narduzzi promised to get him some help. In a 59-14 performance against Miami (Ohio), Heintschel was unbelievably impressive. The sophomore set an ACC record with seven touchdowns and added 453 yards through the air.

All seven of his touchdown passes were to different receivers, led by Cataurus Hicks‘ 114 yards. Offensive coordinator Kade Bell has finally convinced Narduzzi to embrace the passing game, and the Panthers have a star in the making.

Loser: Oregon’s defensive line

The Ducks have been a popular national championship pick after returning a bevy of elite starters, especially along the defensive line. Defensive tackles Bear Alexander and A’Mauri Washington are both potential All-Americans, and edge rushers Teitum Tuioti and Matayo Uiagalelei are potential first-rounders. But against Boise State, the unit just didn’t make an impact.

Statistically, the unit recorded three sacks against opposing quarterback Maddux Madsen, but the Ducks were unable to take control of the game defensively. Half of the Broncos’ last eight drives ended in points. If Oregon is going to contend with the national elite, its defensive line has to be the best unit on the field.

Winner: USC defense

Gary Patterson spent a few years away from coaching after he was let go at TCU. But after a slow finish in Week 0 against San Jose State, Patterson decided it was time to flex his muscles.

USC held Pac-12 contender Fresno State scoreless in a dominant 39-0 victory. The Trojans allowed only 116 total yards and 1.3 yards per carry, an unbelievably strong performance for a once-maligned defense. Four different USC players recorded sacks, with safety Kennedy Urlacher recording a pair.

The Trojans are heading into a make-or-break season under Riley after landing the No. 1 recruiting class in the country. Bringing the strong-minded Patterson aboard was a risk, but his defensive aptitude is off the charts. If the unit can be a top-level Big Ten unit, USC is a playoff contender.

Loser: Bowling Green

Bowling Green’s matchup with FCS power Tarleton State was always projected as a close game — the Falcons were only 2.5-point favorites heading in.

But in addition to losing a 20-13 matchup, Tarleton’s dominance stood out. BGSU allowed 250 yards to running back Tylan Hines, and surrendered 464 yards of offense overall in a sputtering start to the season. To Tarleton’s credit, the Texans have now beaten FBS opponents in back-to-back seasons. They’re becoming a serious power at the FCS level

Winner: UMass

Calling UMass a winner for its magical 37-21 win over Rutgers is the understatement of the century. No team had won as 29-point underdogs since the beginning of the 2024 season. The Minutemen were on a nation-leading 16-game losing streak, including every game under second-year coach Joe Harasymiak.

Instead of wallowing, UMass came out and punched Rutgers right in the mouth. After giving up a touchdown drive to open the game, the Minutemen scored 30 unanswered points, including three touchdown passes from breakout quarterback Pop Watson. Who knows if the performance was a fluke and the clock will strike midnight, but two straight FCS opponents and transitioning Sacramento State sets up a pretty sweet start to the schedule.

Could we see bowl-eligible UMass? Give Harasymiak my national coach of the year vote if he does!

Why Did Ohio State Have Senior Day In Week 1 Against Ball State?

Published

on

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

It’s the first full week of the college football season, which means it’s time to honor the seniors who are playing in their final home game.

Wait, what?

The No. 1 AP ranked Ohio State Buckeyes held their Senior Day celebration prior to the 2026 season opener against the Ball State Cardinals on Saturday afternoon. But Senior Day usually takes place in a team’s last home game of the season.

Ohio State moved its Senior Day ceremony from the home finale against the Michigan Wolverines on Nov. 28 to the home opener against Ball State Saturday because its 2024 Senior Day was clouded by the Buckeyes and Wolverines getting into a post-game scuffle that involved law enforcement after Michigan tried to plant a team flag at midfield of Ohio Stadium.

“We talked about it and had long conversations about [moving Senior Day]. The traditions at Ohio State here are significant and very strong and something that we all respect. When we look at all the things that go on that weekend [Michigan week], the way things have changed, there are some things that we thought about,” head coach Ryan Day said in August about moving the Senior Day celebration.

“The more distractions we have, there’s already enough distractions that week. This was just one more thing that we could move.”

Ohio State recognized 31 seniors on Saturday afternoon.

Elsewhere, Ohio State inducted former head coach Jim Tressel into the program’s Ring of Honor. Tressel was Ohio State’s head coach from 2001-10, with the Buckeyes winning the 2002 BCS championship, going a combined 106-22 and posting eight double-digit-winning seasons with him as head coach. He’s also third in program history among coaches with 106 wins and fourth with an 82.8% winning percentage.

Tressel is just the third coach (Woody Hayes and Paul Brown being the other two) and 10th person altogether to be put in the Buckeyes’ Ring of Honor.

Team Liquid made sure a hiccup didn’t turn into a full-blown emergency.

A week after suffering their first loss in the League Championship Series Summer Split, Liquid swept Dignitas on Saturday to wrap up their regular season and lock up a coveted top-two spot in the standings.

Cloud9 won the day’s other match to move into third place with one day left in the regular season.

The LCS Summer Split is an eight-team event that began July 25 and will run through the finals in October. The seven-week round-robin regular season — in which all teams play each other once in a best-of-three match — will set the field for the six-team playoffs.

The top two teams in the regular season will advance to the playoff semifinals, while the third- through sixth-place teams will advance to the quarters. The bottom two teams in the standings are eliminated.

The playoffs, which run Sept. 12 through Oct. 4, are best-of-five and double elimination. The top three teams will advance to the World Championship, played in New York, Los Angeles and Allen, Texas, from Oct. 15 through Nov. 14.

After losing to LYON last Sunday to put both teams at 5-1 with one weekend remaining in the regular season, Liquid topped Dignitas in 25 and 29 minutes on Saturday, taking the first map on blue and the second on red. South Korean Lim “Quid” Hyeon-seung posted a 13/1/13 kill/death/assist ratio in the win while teammate Brandon Joel ” Josedeodo” Villegas of Argentina posted a 12/0/16. Joshua “Dardoch” Hartnett had a 2/8/2 in the loss.

In the day’s other match, Cloud9 needed to put in a little more work than did Liquid but still got the sweep, taking down Sentinels in 27 and 33 minutes, both times on blue. Lee “Loki” Sang-min of South Korea posted an 11/2/13 in the win. Countryman Cho “Rahel” Min-seong went for 8/7/7 in the loss.

LYON will get their shot at a 6-1 regular season and trip to the semifinals on Sunday when they face Disguised. A pair of teams currently in the 5-6 spots play in the other match, Shopify Rebellion vs. FlyQuest.

Asiad 2026: Can India better its Hangzhou medal tally in Aichi-Nagoya? | Asian Games 2026

Published

on

Three years ago in Hangzhou, India crossed a barrier that had long seemed beyond reach at the Asian Games. The country returned from China with 107 medals — 28 gold, 38 silver and 41 bronze — to finish fourth and, for the first time, breach the 100-medal mark at the continental multi-sport event.

The number has since been revised to 106 after boxer Parveen Hooda was stripped of her bronze following a whereabouts violation. But the significance of Hangzhou has not changed. India had moved from 57 medals at Incheon in 2014 to 69 at Jakarta in 2018 and then made the giant leap to 107 in Hangzhou.

Now, at Aichi-Nagoya, the question is not simply whether India can repeat that performance. It is whether the country has enough depth to go beyond it.

On paper, the challenge looks formidable. India will take a 503-athlete contingent to Japan, comprising 265 men and 227 women, with athletics the largest discipline. The wider contingent has since expanded to 768 members following the addition of surfing, but the athlete strength remains significantly smaller than the 655 athletes India sent to Hangzhou.

That reduction makes the target of 107-plus medals even more demanding. India cannot rely on numbers alone. It will need a greater conversion rate from its medal contenders.

Shooting: India’s biggest opportunity for another big haul

Shooting gave India 22 medals at Hangzhou, including seven golds, and remains one of its strongest medal prospects at Aichi-Nagoya. With depth across rifle, pistol and shotgun, India has several routes to the podium.

Manu Bhaker will be central to that challenge, but her case goes beyond the two Olympic bronze medals she won at Paris 2024. At the Asian Rifle and Pistol Championships in Delhi in February, Bhaker won silver in the 25m pistol, finishing behind Vietnam’s Nguyen Thuy Trang after qualifying for the final with the second-best score. She also helped India win 10m air pistol team gold alongside Esha Singh and Suruchi Singh.

At the ISSF World Cup in Hangzhou in July, Bhaker took 25m pistol bronze, while Esha won gold. Esha had earlier claimed individual 10m air pistol gold at the Asian Championship in February, scoring 239.8 in the final, before adding 25m pistol gold in Hangzhou.

India’s men also bring medal pedigree. Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar won 10m air rifle bronze and 50m rifle 3 positions silver at Hangzhou, while Rudrankksh Patil won team gold in 10m air rifle. Anant Jeet Singh Naruka returns as a Hangzhou silver medallist in men’s skeet, with Kynan Chenai and the shotgun teams adding further possibilities.

Shooting need not match its 22-medal Hangzhou haul to remain India’s biggest medal engine.

Athletics: the biggest contingent, but a missing gold

Athletics remains India’s biggest medal-producing discipline from Hangzhou and will also have the largest contingent at Aichi-Nagoya, with 77 athletes — 34 men and 43 women — across track, field and road events. But the team begins without its biggest medal certainty: Neeraj Chopra. The defending Asian Games javelin champion, who won gold at Jakarta and Hangzhou, is out with an injury, leaving India without its clearest athletics gold prospect.

Avinash Sable returns as the defending 3,000m steeplechase champion, although an interrupted season makes his form harder to assess. Tajinderpal Singh Toor is chasing a third successive Asian Games shot put title after winning in 2018 and 2022, but his fifth-place finish at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, despite throwing 20.14m in qualifying, underlines the uncertainty.

Parul Chaudhary, a two-time Hangzhou medallist, enters the 1,500m, steeplechase and 5,000m. She was fifth and 13th respectively at Glasgow but also set a national record in the 5,000m this season.

Gulveer Singh offers perhaps the clearest route to an improved return. He won 10,000m silver and 5,000m bronze at Glasgow, becoming India’s first athlete to win two athletics medals at one Commonwealth Games. After a Hangzhou 10,000m bronze, he now enters three events.

Murali Sreeshankar, meanwhile, followed his Hangzhou long-jump silver with another silver at Glasgow after an 8.09m jump.

Matching Hangzhou’s 29 medals will require the wider team — from field events to distance running and relays — to make up for Chopra’s absence.

Archery: Jyothi has the record, Dhiraj has the momentum

Archery was one of India’s biggest success stories at Hangzhou, producing golds in both men’s and women’s compound team events, along with individual titles for Ojas Deotale and Jyothi Surekha Vennam and medals in recurve. But the 2026 squad has a very different look.

Ojas Deotale, Abhishek Verma and Aditi Swami, all individual medallists in Hangzhou, are absent. Veterans Deepika Kumari and Atanu Das also missed selection after finishing fourth in the trials.

That leaves greater responsibility on Jyothi Surekha Vennam, the only returning individual champion from India’s Hangzhou compound gold-medal group. She is appearing at her fourth Asian Games and remains the most experienced member of the women’s compound team.

In recurve, however, Dhiraj Bommadevara brings the strongest recent momentum. At the Antalya World Cup in June, he and Kumkum Mohod defeated Olympic champions South Korea 5-1 to win mixed-team gold. Bommadevara then added the individual title, taking two golds at the same stage.

The result was significant given South Korea’s dominance — it has won both Olympic mixed-team titles since the event entered the programme.

As of September 1, Bommadevara was ranked 10th in the world and had a 10-3 match record in 2026.

With several Hangzhou champions missing, another compound gold rush is less certain. But Bommadevara’s form gives India a fresh and credible medal route in recurve.

Badminton: champions, but the warning signs are there

Badminton is perhaps the clearest example of why recent performances matter as much as reputation. Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, the defending Asian Games men’s doubles champions, remain India’s biggest medal hope, but their recent results have exposed some vulnerabilities.

At the World Championships in August, they survived Malaysia’s Junaidi Arif and Roy King Yap 21-23, 21-19, 21-17 in the round of 16 before losing 21-18, 21-9 to China’s Liang Weikeng and Wang Chang in the quarter-finals. At the China Masters this week, they again needed three games to beat France’s Christo Popov and Toma Junior Popov 21-17, 22-24, 21-9 and reach the quarter-finals.

The stronger recent-form argument may come from the women’s doubles pair of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand. They won bronze at the 2026 BWF World Championships last month, giving India a genuine medal prospect in a discipline where the pair’s confidence has been growing.

Lakshya Sen and PV Sindhu add individual possibilities, but both had disappointing campaigns at the World Championships, exiting in the round of 32 and the round of 16, respectively.

India’s badminton hopes, therefore, could rest heavily on its doubles pairs and team events, with Jolly-Gayatri providing an important new medal route alongside the defending champions Satwik-Chirag.

Boxing: Glasgow gives India something to build on

Boxing could be one of the sports where India improves on its Hangzhou return. India had four medals in Hangzhou, although Parveen Hooda’s bronze was later removed from the recognised tally.

The 2026 team arrives with considerable confidence after a standout Commonwealth Games campaign, in which Indian boxers won seven gold and three silver medals. Preeti Pawar, Sakshi Chaudhary, Priya Ghanghas and Sachin Siwach were among the gold medallists, while Lovlina Borgohain, Jadumani Singh and Narender Berwal won silver.

But Glasgow cannot simply be treated as a predictor of Asian Games success. The Asian field is deeper, and the Commonwealth draw did not offer the same level of opposition across every weight category.

Lovlina’s silver illustrates that distinction. She reached the 75kg final before losing 1-4 to Australia’s Emma-Sue Greentree. The five-boxer draw had also given her a first-round bye, meaning she faced only one genuinely demanding bout before the final. Her silver confirms her status as a major-tournament medal contender, but not necessarily as an Asian Games favourite.

Preeti Pawar offers a more encouraging signal. She won gold in Glasgow and returns in the 54kg category.

For India, therefore, the opportunity is not to replicate seven Commonwealth golds, but to carry that confidence into a significantly stronger Asian field and turn it into a larger collection of Asian Games medals.

Weightlifting: Mirabai leads the charge again

Few Indian athletes arrive in Aichi-Nagoya with a more interesting mix of recent success and unfinished business than Mirabai Chanu. She won women’s 48kg gold at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, setting Games records with an 85kg snatch and 105kg clean and jerk. It was her third consecutive Commonwealth Games gold.

Yet Chanu has never won an Asian Games medal. That makes Aichi-Nagoya a particularly significant opportunity: she enters after another major title, but still has one continental medal missing from her collection.

India also has Gyaneshwari Yadav, Seram Nirupama Devi and Harjinder Kaur, all Glasgow medallists. Gyaneshwari won silver in the 53kg category, while Harjinder took silver at 69kg.

Chanu is clearly the focal point, but the wider group gives India multiple medal possibilities. The Commonwealth results cannot simply be carried over to Asia, where the field is stronger. Still, if Chanu converts her recent form and the supporting group adds a medal or two, weightlifting could make a meaningful contribution to India’s overall tally.

Wrestling: Olympic pedigree meets a tougher test

Wrestling produced six medals for India at Hangzhou — three in the men’s events and three in the women’s — but none were gold. The 2026 team has an important upgrade in Aman Sehrawat, who returns to the Asian Games as an Olympic bronze medallist.

Sehrawat competes in the 57kg freestyle category, while Antim Panghal, a Hangzhou bronze medallist, returns at 53kg.

The difficulty is that wrestling does not offer India the same recent Commonwealth reference point as boxing or weightlifting. The sport was absent from the 2026 Glasgow programme, so the assessment has to rely more heavily on international results and championship pedigree.

That makes the target relatively simple: India does not need to dominate wrestling to improve its overall position. Turning some of the six Hangzhou medals into gold, while adding another podium or two, would already represent a significant contribution.

Sehrawat’s Olympic medal gives India one proven major-event performer, while Panghal provides continuity from Hangzhou.

Squash and table tennis: where the extra medals could come from

India’s final medal tally may be shaped as much by these sports as by its headline names. Squash, in particular, offers several routes to additional medals.

India won men’s team gold, mixed doubles gold, men’s singles silver and women’s team bronze at Hangzhou. The 2026 squad again includes Abhay Singh, Velavan Senthilkumar, Anahat Singh, Joshana Chinappa and Tanvi Khanna, giving India options across singles, doubles and team events.

That depth matters. India does not necessarily need one player to dominate multiple events; a medal in any one of the formats can add to the overall tally.

Table tennis provides a similar opportunity. Sreeja Akula, Yashaswini Ghorpade, Manush Shah, Manav Thakkar and Harmeet Desai give India established international players across singles, doubles and team competitions.

Neither sport carries the same certainty as India’s strongest gold prospects. But that is precisely why they matter. One unexpected silver or bronze from squash or table tennis could ultimately be the difference between finishing above or below Hangzhou’s 107-medal mark.

The gold medals India cannot afford to lose

Some parts of India’s medal calculation are more straightforward because the country returns as defending champion.

The men’s hockey, men’s kabaddi, women’s kabaddi, men’s cricket and women’s cricket teams all arrive with gold-medal credentials from Hangzhou. The two cricket teams won the inaugural Asian Games T20 titles in 2023, while the kabaddi teams and men’s hockey team also topped the podium.

That gives India several potentially valuable gold-medal opportunities before the individual events are even considered.

The men’s hockey team will defend its title, while the women’s team — bronze medallists at Hangzhou — has an opportunity to improve rather than defend a championship.

Cricket is particularly significant because both teams return with high-profile players. Harmanpreet Kaur, Smriti Mandhana, Shafali Verma, Deepti Sharma and Richa Ghosh headline the women’s side, while Shreyas Iyer leads the men’s team.

But these should not be treated as guaranteed medals. Team sports are knockout competitions, and one poor match can turn a projected gold into no medal at all. India therefore needs to convert these defending-champion opportunities into actual medals if it wants a strong base for a record tally.

The bigger question: Can India replace what it has lost?

That may ultimately decide whether India can move beyond 107 medals.

The country has lost Neeraj Chopra, while several of the archers who delivered medals at Hangzhou are also absent. Other established names have fallen out of the 2026 squad as well.

But India has also gained athletes whose credentials have grown considerably since 2023.

Manu Bhaker is now a double Olympic medallist. Aman Sehrawat is an Olympic medallist. Mirabai Chanu arrives after another Commonwealth gold. Gulveer Singh is now a double Commonwealth medallist. Dhiraj Bommadevara has won major World Cup gold, while Esha Singh has won individual gold at both the Asian Championship and the Hangzhou World Cup.

That is the reason the 107-medal target remains realistic. It is not because India has simply retained its Hangzhou champions. It is because some of the athletes taking their place are entering the Asian Games with stronger credentials than they had three years ago.

After entering the ruins with Anca during Where Old Devils Lie, proceed forward to kill the undead. Next, go northwest and move downstairs to open a door. There, you have to kill a few more undead enemies. At the end of it, take the stairs on the right to go up. Move ahead to enter through the door, and continue to reach a large chamber full of enemies.

Inspect the idol and open the door

Defeat them, take the north side entrance, move forward, and crouch through the gap. In this chamber, you need to eliminate a few more of the undead. When done, interact with the highlighted idol (use Focus Mode) and inspect its two points. In the next segment, select these prompts:

  • Alright… Wish me luck.
  • Complete the prompted quick-time events.
  • Keep still.
  • Complete the prompted quick-time event.

Doing this will open the required door. Afterward, choose the dialogue options while speaking with Anca (to progress through her romance path):

  • Better me than you.
  • Choose any.

Proceed left for a bit, and you will find a door on the southeast side. Open it to encounter the Fallen Hero mini-boss. After defeating it, crouch through the entrance on the south side to trigger a cutscene.

Choose these prompts while speaking with Anca (for romance):

  • I’ve never heard you swear.
  • Anca? What’s wrong?
  • Don’t say that just yet.
  • You were hoping to use the Font yourself.
  • I would, too, in your place.
  • Why didn’t you tell me all this before?
  • I’d do anything for you.
  • I love you.

Find a way forward

Now, inspect the tablet in the middle to trigger a cutscene, then select ‘Alright…I’ll get to it.’ Perform the Astral Communication with it, which will spawn the Guardians of the Font.

Try to parry using directional block and take them down one by one. Anca will help as well. That said, after you eliminate them all, another boss will start to attack. Dodge its swipe attack and keep on parrying to take it down.

  • Thank you, Anca.

To give it to Anca (for romance):

  • Go ahead. Make what you will with it.
  • I’m so happy for you.

Note: If you acquire the Font of Life, it unlocks the perk of the same name in your Witchcraft skill tree. It grants you passive regeneration of human form health.

After choosing your preferred option, speak with Anca and select ‘Let’s go back to the inn’ to return to Anca’s place.

  • There’s a conversation we need to finish.
  • I meant what I said.
  • Scr*w decency. I want you, too.
  • Not sure I got that. One more time?

  • You never said you loved me back.
  • Why?
  • My question still stands. What now?
  • Think it’s all thanks to the Font? (You can choose other prompts as well)
  • Why, thank you.

With this, the Stronger Than Achilles quest in The Blood of Dawnwalker comes to an end. You will receive 500 XP as a reward. This also concludes the Anca quest line in the game.
