Manchester United confirmed the loan departure of James Scanlon to Swindon Town with just seconds of the January transfer window remaining.

A club statement posted at 6:59pm read: “Manchester United forward James Scanlon has secured a first loan move of his career. The 19-year-old is joining League Two side Swindon Town for the remainder of the 2025/26 campaign.

“Ian Holloway’s side are challenging for promotion to League One and have a midweek game away to Harrogate Town next on their agenda.”

Scanlon’s temporary move is not expected to be the only deal confirmed today with two others coming after the 7pm deadline. Gabriele Biancheri has joined Rotherham, with Jacob Devaney heading to St Mirren, though the Scottish club have until 11pm to complete that deal.

Several other loan switches for academy stars have been confirmed over the last four weeks with Ethan Wheatley joining Bradford City.

Toby Collyer has also headed back to the Championship with Hull City taking on his services after he was recalled from a spell at West Brom

There have also been permanent departures for Rhys Bennett and Joe Hugill to Fleetwood Town and Kilmarnock, respectively. It has been a quiet window regarding incomings for United despite their eagerness to sign a new midfielder.

Confirmation of Casemiro’s departure has furthered that with Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson and Adam Wharton of Crystal Palace as summer targets

Brighton’s Carlos Baleba is also serious option but their enquiry in January was rebuffed. The future of Bruno Fernandes is also likely to be a big topic at the conclusion of the 2025/26 season.

Tyrell Malacia is likely to depart the club at the end of his contract in June but did look set to join the likes of Collyer, Wheatley and Scanlon in heading elsewhere for the remainder of the season.

However, his expected switch to join a Turkish club fell through with the same scenario taking place in the summer after he was denied the chance to join Elche.

The injury to Patrick Dorgu has seemingly played a role in the decision with the Denmark international expected to miss the next two months at least.

Minus that, Michael Carrick has not been hit by too many injury blows with United winning all three of his games in charge.

Huge victories over Arsenal and Manchester City were followed up by a 3-2 victory against Fulham at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon with Benjamin Sesko netting a late winner.
