Man United signed Ballon d’Or winner and record goalscorer on free transfers

Manchester United are likely to enter the summer transfer window without a permanent manager in place

Manchester United will likely need to bring in several new signings to their squad this summer. Without a permanent manager in place, the club are poised to appoint their next long-term boss and support whoever they select in the transfer market to put their own mark on the team.

With finances tight, the club could explore free agents to enhance quality and squad depth. Recruiting players who are unattached could be a strategic gamble for the Premier League giants.

United have traditionally depended on academy products and emerging talents to strengthen their squad, though this approach may shift in the coming months.

Michael Carrick has brought fresh optimism to Old Trafford, securing four victories from five games since his interim return, and supporters have been demanding his temporary head coach position be made permanent once the 2025/26 campaign ends.

However, with numerous uncertainties in the United dressing room, the club’s leadership may prefer to wait before making a permanent appointment.

Free agents could prove United’s salvation during this transitional phase. Here, Manchester Evening News revisits some of United’s biggest free transfer signings.

Sky will show at least 215 live Premier League games this season, an increase of up to 100 more.

Michael Owen

Michael Owen sent shockwaves through football when he joined United following the expiry of his Newcastle contract in 2009. The former Liverpool hero, who secured the 2001 Ballon d’Or whilst at Anfield, caused considerable controversy by signing a two-year agreement with their fierce rivals.

Making matters worse, Ferguson handed Owen the club’s legendary number seven jersey.

The 29-year-old striker had found it difficult to recapture his finest form since leaving Liverpool and had suffered relegation with Newcastle the season before. Nevertheless, Owen’s instinct for finding the net remained sharp.

The ex-England international struck a memorable 4-3 winner against Manchester City and also found the target as United beat Aston Villa in the 2010 League Cup final. Following a promising first campaign, Owen featured sufficiently to secure a Premier League winner’s medal in 2011, but his opportunities diminished before he left United in 2012.

He found the back of the net 17 times in 52 outings for the club.

Victor Valdes

In 2014, United made a statement by securing Barcelona legend Victor Valdes as cover for David De Gea. The shot-stopper had been without a team for several months whilst rehabilitating from a knee injury after departing Barcelona, and ultimately signed an 18-month contract with United in January 2015.

Valdes secured six La Liga titles and three Champions League medals with his boyhood club and was familiar with United manager Louis van Gaal from their time together at Camp Nou. After completing his rehabilitation from a knee injury at United, the 32-year-old was content to challenge De Gea and made his first team bow in May.

Nevertheless, Valdes was subsequently transfer-listed following reports that he had declined to feature in a reserve fixture. The Spain international managed only two outings for the club before moving to Standard Liege on loan in January 2016 and subsequently joining newly-promoted Middlesbrough on a free transfer.

Paul Scholes

One of the most remarkable decisions during Sir Alex Ferguson’s legendary managerial tenure was persuading Paul Scholes to return from retirement. The midfielder had drawn the curtain on his career at the conclusion of the 2010/11 season but made a sensational return, entering as a substitute in an FA Cup triumph over Manchester City in January 2012.

Scholes’ comeback was announced just an hour before the Manchester derby as United battled an injury crisis, with Darren Fletcher and Tom Cleverley unavailable. Ferguson remained convinced Scholes had retired too early, and his assessment proved correct as the midfielder appeared 21 times that campaign.

The midfielder signed a contract extension and was part of the United squad that clinched the Premier League in Ferguson’s final season in charge before retiring permanently.

Edinson Cavani

United secured former PSG star Edinson Cavani on transfer deadline day in October 2020, several months following his exit from the French side. The then 33-year-old had become PSG’s all-time leading scorer during his seven-year tenure in Paris, scoring 200 goals in 301 appearances.

Upon arriving at Old Trafford, Cavani was given the legendary number seven shirt and would have hoped to mirror his former colleague Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s instant influence on the club a few years earlier. Cavani scored 17 goals in his first season as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team finished second in the Premier League and lost the Europa League final on penalties.

Unfortunately for Cavani, who had extended his contract in May 2021, United were unable to build on that momentum as Solskjaer was replaced by interim manager Ralf Rangnick that December.

The Uruguayan striker had surrendered his number seven shirt to a returning Cristiano Ronaldo and saw his playing time significantly reduced before leaving the club in the summer of 2022.

‘That’s another reason why I fancy them’ – Pundits give verdict on Everton vs Man United

Published

on

Manchester United will hope to put the demons of November’s 1-0 defeat to 10-man Everton behind them on Monday when they face the Toffees at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Manchester United know they need to be looking to take three points from games against the likes of Everton if they’re to make a return to Champions League football.

While this season has produced plenty of highs with wins against Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool, there have been far too many dropped points against teams you would fancy United to beat. All of the bottom six teams in the Premier League have taken at least a point off United this season.

Everton have enjoyed a solid campaign but their home form of late has been dire. They haven’t won at their new stadium in over two months and have won just four league games at the Hill Dickinson Stadium all season. Monday night represents a great opportunity for United to strengthen their push for a place in next season’s Champions League.

Pundits have had their say on who they think will win Monday’s clash. This is what they think:

Chris Sutton

“Manchester United lost at home to Everton in November despite the Toffees going down to 10 men in the 13th minute, when Idrissa Gueye was sent off for striking his teammate Michael Keane,” Sutton told BBC Sport.

“Ruben Amorim’s United just could not find a way of breaking Everton down that night, but there is a very different feel about them now Michael Carrick is in charge. They needed a stoppage-time equaliser to get a point at West Ham last time out but they seem much more confident and have been playing well.

“This will be a tough game for them but, as I’ve mentioned previously, Everton have picked up more points on the road this season than they have done at home. That’s another reason why I fancy United to get something here, and stop David Moyes doing the double over his former club.”

Prediction: Everton 1-1 United.

Paul Merson

“The pressure will be on Manchester United because they are playing after Chelsea and Liverpool this weekend,” Merson told Sportskeeda. “I don’t think Everton are great at home, so at least that’s an advantage for United. Everton have not won in their last five home games in the league.

“I like how Manchester United did not give up against West Ham and got that late draw. Michael Carrick took a chance to try and get back in the game. He gambled like Sir Alex Ferguson would have and they got the draw. I liked that about him.

“Manchester United will create chances in this game and I fully expect them to score enough to get the win over Everton.”

Prediction: Everton 1-2 United

Harry Redknapp

“Obviously, Everton went to Old Trafford and won with 10 men, but this will have a different feel to it, ” Redknapp told BetVictor. “Everton have been better on the road than at home of late, I’m not quite sure why! It almost feels like they need a signature, big win at the new ground to really kickstart this era at the club – this could be it.

“United drew with West Ham and the fella might never get his haircut at this rate. Ignoring all that though, that wasn’t a bad result and Michael Carrick would absolutely have taken 13 points from 15 when he got appointed.

“I’m leaning towards the draw in this one but I’m not quite sure what to expect.

“One to watch – I do think we’re beginning to see more of the best of Sesko, I loved that finish against West Ham.”

Prediction: Draw

'That is shocking': Gautam Gambhir faces heat after Axar Patel sits out IND vs SA T20 World Cup Super 8 match

India captain Suryakumar Yadav revealed that the team went with the same playing XI for the Super 8 game against South Africa on Sunday, which meant vice-captain Axar Patel was left out again, with Washington Sundar keeping his spot. After losing the toss, Surya admitted he wanted to bat first but accepted the toss result, calling Axar’s omission a tough call.

Jay Shah: Kapil Dev deserves more credit for 1983 World Cup triumph

“I was actually looking to bat first, but it’s okay, and we’re happy to bowl first. It’s very harsh on Axar Patel, but we’re going with the same team – just a tactical decision, so no changes from the last game,” he said at the toss. The decision sparked strong reactions on social media, with many fans questioning Axar’s exclusion.“Can someone tell me, why Axar Patel is dropped with his OG T2OI performances?” One fan wrote on X.“I have another question, can somebody tell me why Washington Sundar is not bowling to David Miller, if he was selected over Axar with lefties excuse?Does anything make sense under Gambhir?”Similar sentiments among fans over the Axar Patel omission call followed. In the match, South Africa had a shaky start after opting to bat. Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh struck early, reducing them to 20/3 in just four overs. However, David Miller and Dewald Brevis staged a strong comeback, attacking India’s bowlers and shifting the momentum.Miller took on Varun Chakravarthy and Arshdeep Singh with powerful boundaries, while Brevis joined in with aggressive shots against Washington Sundar and others. The pair added quick runs and pushed the scoring rate up, helping South Africa recover to 84/3 at the halfway stage. Nevertheless, South Africa posted a strong total of 187/7 in their 20 overs after choosing to bat against India. After losing early wickets, Miller (63 off 35) and Brevis (45 off 29) led a crucial recovery, while Stubbs (44* off 24) provided a late surge. Bumrah was the standout bowler with 3/15, supported by Arshdeep’s 2/28, but India still face a challenging chase.

“I saw the video yesterday (Friday), and it kind of just depicts him pretty well,” she said. “He’s an emotional guy, but he coached a lot of men’s teams and this is kind of his first women’s gig and we’ve taken him in with grace these past four years and I think he’s done wonders for this group and definitely an honor for me because the last Olympics, I got cut. He’s the first coach that gave me that chance back. He knows I’m very grateful for that. I tell him that every day.

Oscar De La Hoya reacts to Floyd Mayweather’s return to pro boxing: “I might want the rematch”

Published

on

Oscar De La Hoya has weighed in on Floyd Mayweather revealing shock plans to stage a professional boxing comeback.

It was announced this weekend that Mayweather is set to end his retirement and make a return to professional boxing later this year.

He will first take part in an exhibition against fellow boxing legend Mike Tyson, which is reported to be in April in the Congo, before then turning his attention to once again competing professionally.

Mayweather retired in 2017 so it will be nearly a decade since he has fought as a professional, though he has taken part in a number of exhibitions since then.

One man that he famously fought was De La Hoya back in May 2007, claiming a split decision win over ‘The Golden Boy’ to win the WBC light middleweight title.

Speaking to FightHype, De La Hoya first shared his thoughts on Mayweather returning.

“I’m excited for him. I heard he’s having an exhibition with Mike Tyson. Then he’s coming out of retirement to fight professional. It’s very interesting.”

De La Hoya was then asked if he would come out of retirement to face Mayweather again, and refused to rule it out.

“Don’t do this to me, I know I look good but don’t do this to me. I might want it [the rematch].”

De La Hoya fought on just two further occasions after the loss to Mayweather, with his final bout coming in December 2008 when he was beaten by Manny Pacquiao, so it seems unlikely the 53-year-old would return, even for an enticing battle against his former foe.

Felix Auger-Aliassime vs Zhang Zhizhen preview

Last year’s runner-up and top seed, Felix Auger-Aliassime, will take on Zhang Zhizhen in the opening round of the Dubai Tennis Championships. Whoever wins the match will take on either Tunisian Moez Echargui or a qualifier/lucky loser in the second round of the ATP 500 event.

Auger-Aliassime enjoyed an impressive 2025 season, but his 2026 season got off to a rocky start. After winning just one of his two singles matches at the United Cup and retiring from his Australian Open first-round clash, the Canadian won the Open Occitanie in Montpellier and followed it up by reaching the final of the ABN AMRO Open in Rotterdam, where he lost to Alex de Minaur.

Zhang Zhizhen has won three out of six matches so far in the 2026 season, with his most notable victory coming against Zizou Bergs at the United Cup. The Chinese, who was ranked 422 places below the Belgian at the time, won 6-7(2), 7-6(3), 7-5.

Before Dubai, Zhang last competed at the Qatar Open, getting a place in the main draw through protected ranking. The Chinese beat Roberto Carballes Baena 6-4, 6-4 in the opening round before losing 3-6, 2-6 to sixth seed and eventual semifinalist Jakub Mensik in the second round.

The head-to-head between the two is currently tied at 1-1, with Auger-Aliassime winning their most recent encounter 6-4. 6-4, which came during the United Cup earlier this year.

Felix Auger-Aliassime vs Zhang Zhizhen prediction

Auger-Aliassime will enter the match as the overwhelming favorite to win, given his form over the past 15 months. The Canadian has reached the final in his two tournaments and has a good chance of doing so this time around as well. That said, Zhang has done well in his matches so far in 2026, beating several higher-ranked players, as his ranking rose from 464 to 319.

Auger-Aliassime is an effective server and produced 35 aces from five matches in Rotterdam. The 25-year-old doesn’t shy away from playing his shots and his aggression will no doubt make things difficult for Zhang.

The 29-year-old amassed 12 aces from his two matches in Doha and will rely heavily on his service games while looking for a decisive break. Auger-Aliassime has often produced unforced errors, so Zhang will have to find a balanced approach if he is to make things difficult for the World No. 7.

While the Chinese has produced some good moments so far this season, Auger-Aliassime could well be too much for him and he should be able to book his place in the second round of the Dubai Tennis Championships.

Pick: Auger-Aliassime to win in straight sets.

Felix Auger-Aliassime vs Zhang Zhizhen betting tips

Tip 1: Auger-Aliassime to serve over ten aces

Tip 2: Auger-Aliassime to lose less than five games
