Man United transfer news LIVE: Gavi stance, Manu Kone latest, £60m double deal eyed
Manchester United supporters are running second only to Arsenal in the Premier League optimism stakes, with a third of the Old Trafford faithful tipping a title triumph this season.
According to a survey by Betfair and YouGov, 34% of United fans back their team to win the league. However, Betfair Predicts rates United’s realistic title chances at just 8%, giving Red Devils supporters a +26% score on the Overconfidence Index.
Despite low national expectations for a title challenge, 88% of United fans firmly expect to secure a Champions League spot this season. While 44% of general football supporters reckon United will finish empty-handed, 77% of United fans believe the squad will deliver at least one piece of silverware.
Betfair Spokesperson, Sam Rosbottom said: “Football fans are nothing if not loyal, and our Overconfidence Index proves it. Arsenal supporters top the table by a distance, with 72% backing a title defence, while Betfair Predicts gives them a 43% chance.
“It’s not just the Gunners either; a third of United fans think Michael Carrick will lead them to title glory. That unshakeable, slightly bonkers optimism is exactly what makes the start of a new season so special, we just can’t promise it’ll all end in silverware.”
