NHL roundup: Jack Quinn’s hat trick propels Sabres to 8th straight win

Alex Tuch and Beck Malenstyn also scored for Buffalo, which is 29-6-2 since Dec. 9. The Sabres also moved four points clear of the Tampa Bay Lightning atop the Atlantic Division.
Alexander Wennberg notched a goal and an assist for the Sharks, who lost for the eighth time in 11 games (3-5-3). Keifer Sherwood also scored for San Jose, while teen sensation Macklin Celebrini scored his team-high 33rd.
The Sabres are averaging 4.5 goals per game during their win streak, and they wasted no time against San Jose.
Bruins 2, Kings 1 (OT)
Charlie McAvoy slid home a game-winning backhander 39 seconds into overtime, lifting Boston to a win over visiting Los Angeles.
Mark Kastelic fired a long pass to David Pastrnak, who centered the puck to McAvoy for a drive down the slot to propel Boston to its 13th consecutive home win. Mason Lohrei also scored and Jeremy Swayman made 14 saves for the Bruins, who hold the second and final Eastern Conference wild-card playoff spot.
For Los Angeles, Drew Doughty’s goal with 6:00 left in regulation forced overtime. Darcy Kuemper stopped 21 shots. Both of the teams’ head-to-head meetings this season were scoreless after two periods and ended with 2-1 Boston wins in overtime.
Hurricanes 5, Penguins 4 (SO)
Jackson Blake scored the shootout winner as Carolina beat Pittsburgh after blowing a two-goal lead late in regulation in Raleigh, N.C.
Logan Stankoven, Mark Jankowski, Seth Jarvis and Alexander Nikishin had Carolina’s goals in regulation. Frederik Anderson made 24 saves for the Metropolitan Division-leading Hurricanes, who have won eight of their last 10 games.
Bryan Rust scored two goals, while Anthony Mantha and Noel Acciari also scored for Pittsburgh in a matchup between the top two teams in the division. Erik Karlsson provided two assists and Stuart Skinner stopped 39 shots.
Islanders 4, Blues 3 (OT)
Mathew Barzal scored 2:11 into overtime to complete an unlikely New York comeback for a road win over St. Louis. The Islanders are 10-0-0 in games decided in overtime this season.
Down 3-0 midway through, the Islanders scored three goals to force extra time, with Barzal assisting on two of those tallies. Calum Ritchie had a goal and an assist for the Islanders while Bo Horvat and Jean-Gabriel Pageau each contributed a goal. Ilya Sorokin stopped 20 shots.
The Blues had their four-game winning streak end despite getting a goal and two assists from Jimmy Snuggerud. Robert Thomas added two assists, Philip Broberg and Dylan Holloway scored St. Louis’ other goals, and Joel Hofer made a career-high 46 saves.
Canadiens 3, Maple Leafs 1
Rookie Oliver Kapanen and Philip Danault scored in the first period to lift host Montreal over struggling Toronto.
Jake Evans converted into the empty net with 28 seconds remaining in the third period to seal the Canadiens’ third win in four meetings with the Maple Leafs this season. Jakub Dobe made 17 saves to improve to 11-1-2 in his past 14 games.
William Nylander scored in the second period and Joseph Woll stopped 30 shots for the Maple Leafs, who have lost eight straight games (0-6-2) since the Olympic break.
Panthers 4, Red Wings 3
Carter Verhaeghe scored the tying and go-ahead goals 1:15 apart in the waning moments of regulation as Florida rallied for a home victory over Detroit in Sunrise, Fla.
Down 3-2, Florida pulled goaltender Daniil Tarasov (25 saves) for the extra skater, and Verhaeghe sent a drive from the point through plenty of slot traffic and past screened Detroit goalie John Gibson (24 saves) to tie things with 1:30 left in regulation. Then the Panthers surged into the Detroit zone off a Red Wings turnover, where Matthew Tkachuk, who assisted on Verhaeghe’s tying score, found him again for a successful wrister in the dying seconds.
Residing near the bottom of the Eastern Conference following back-to-back Stanley Cup-winning seasons, the Panthers have beaten the Red Wings twice in a five-day span after losing four straight.
Rangers 4, Flames 0
Alexis Lafreniere netted a hat trick and goaltender Jonathan Quick recorded his 65th career shutout as host New York beat struggling Calgary.
Conor Sheary also scored and Mika Zibanejad collected two assists, giving him five points (two goals, three assists) in two outings. Gabe Perreault also recorded a pair of assists. Quick made 21 saves to register his second shutout of the season,
The Rangers sit at the bottom of the Eastern Conference, but they have posted a 4-1-2 mark in their past seven outings. Dustin Wolf stopped 25 shots for the Flames, who have the league’s worst road record and are ahead of only the Vancouver Canucks in the overall standings. Stars 2, Golden Knights 1
Jake Oettinger made 26 saves as Dallas extended its point streak to 13 games with a victory over visiting Vegas.
Jamie Benn scored what proved to be the game-winner on a second-period power play. Oskar Back also tallied for Dallas, which extended its winning streak against the Golden Knights to four games dating back to last season.
Jack Eichel scored for Vegas, which took its third straight loss and its sixth in the past seven games. Adin Hill stopped 14 shots as the Golden Knights lost to the Stars for the fourth straight time. Predators 4, Kraken 2
Ryan Ufko scored his first career NHL goal and Juuse Saros made a season-high 43 saves as Nashville rallied for a victory at Seattle.
Tyson Jost, Reid Schaefer and Steven Stamkos also scored and Jonathan Marchessault had two assists for the Predators, who evened their record on their five-game trip at 1-1-0 and pulled within a point of Seattle for the Western Conference’s second and final wild-card berth.
Kaapo Kakko and Matty Beniers scored for the Kraken, who lost their third in a row. Joey Daccord stopped 23 of 26 shots. Blue Jackets 5, Lightning 2
Conor Garland crafted his second straight two-goal game as visiting Columbus swept the three-game season series from Tampa Bay.
Acquired from the Vancouver Canucks in a trade last week, Garland broke a 24-game scoreless drought with two markers on Monday. Now he has four goals through two games with his new team. The Blue Jackets also got tallies from Ivan Provorov, Dante Fabbro and Kirill Marchenko. Zach Werenski and Sean Monahan had two assists apiece for Columbus, which opened a three-game road trip by moving to 15-2-3 in the past 20 contests.
In dropping to 1-6-0 in their past seven games and playing a third match in four nights, the Lightning got goals from Gage Goncalves and J.J. Moser. Andrei Vasilevskiy made 26 saves. Oilers 4, Avalanche 3
Connor McDavid scored a tiebreaking goal midway through the third period and added an assist, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins scored twice and Edmonton beat Colorado in Denver.
Jack Roslovic had a goal, Evan Bouchard and Leon Draisaitl had two assists each and Tristan Jarry made 11 saves in relief of Connor Ingram for Edmonton. Ingram was injured in a collision with Colorado’s Nathan MacKinnon. MacKinnon was given a five-minute major and a game misconduct after skating into Ingram, who sustained a cut on his forehead. McDavid netted the game-winner at 9:03 of the third.
Ross Colton, Valeri Nichushkin and Martin Necas scored and Mackenzie Blackwood turned away 20 shots for the Avalanche, who had their five-game winning streak snapped. Wild 5, Mammoth 0
Bobby Brink scored his first goal as a member of Minnesota to help his new team cruise to a shutout win over Utah in Saint Paul, Minn.
Kirill Kaprizov notched a goal and an assist, while Matt Boldy, Danila Yurov and Ryan Hartman scored one goal apiece for Minnesota, which won for the third time in its past four games. Vladimir Tarasenko tallied two assists. Wild goaltender Filip Gustavsson stopped all 25 shots he saw for his fourth shutout of the season and the 15th of his career.
Logan Cooley led Utah with four shots on goal. The Mammoth had their point streak snapped at four games (3-0-1) and were shut out for the sixth time this season. Mammoth goaltender Karel Vejmelka allowed five goals on 30 shots. Ducks 4, Jets 1
Alex Killorn, Ryan Poehling and Jackson LaCombe each had a goal and an assist for visiting Anaheim, which scored three times in a 1:44 span of the second period in a victory against Winnipeg.
Tim Washe also scored and Lukas Dostal made just 12 saves for the Ducks in the opener of the four-game road trip. Anaheim improved to 6-2-0 since the Olympic break and 15-4-0 in its past 19 games.

In 20 days, longtime Vikings executive Rob Brzezinski will select the newest group of Minnesota Vikings players in the draft. As always, the draft remains a mystery, although analysts all over the country seemingly want to make it official with mock draft darling Dillon Thieneman joining the club.
There are other scenarios that don’t include the safety and Alex Ballentine from Bleacher Report has a different idea for Minnesota’s first-round pick in a perfect world.
He wrote, “Injury concerns push Jermod McCoy to the Vikings at No. 18. Even getting their choice of McNeil-Warren or Thieneman would be great. They need to stock up on secondary talent to take on Caleb Williams, Jared Goff and Jordan Love.”
Minnesota’s second could certainly use an infusion of youth, as the youngest member of that group who’s expected to play a significant role is Jay Ward, who’s set to turn 26 in the summer. Defensive coordinator Brian Flores has made it work with veterans and patchwork one-year solutions. The Vikings featured an outstanding pass defense in 2025.
At some point, however, developing some in-house talent certainly makes sense and McCoy or the safety duo could fit his unit.
McCoy is in the conversation to be the first corner taken this year despite missing the entire season due to a torn ACL suffered in January 2025. He then skipped the combine workouts, which raised some alarms.
This week, however, he posted a 4.38 40-yard dash with test scores in the jumping department that confirm his athleticism. In 13 games at Tennessee, McCoy registered 44 tackles and four interceptions.
ESPN’s Matt Miller noted on Friday, “The feedback I received from teams was that McCoy is back in the running for CB1. There were some questions even from the morning of the workout about what drills he would participate in. But he did everything, including positional drills.
“Teams love McCoy’s size (6-foot, 193 pounds) and his over 1-inch advantage in terms of arm length over Delane — 31¼ inches compared to 30 inches. And while Delane’s elite final season might keep him in the top spot, both players feel like top-12 locks.”
Mansoor Delane (LSU) is the other cornerback in the mix for CB1. He also sent strong signals at his pro day and he played in the final season of his collegiate career. In most mock drafts, both are drafted before the Vikings are on the clock at 18.
It should be noted that cornerbacks tend to fall on draft day unless they are elite prospects like Sauce Gardner or Derek Stingley in 2022 and Devon Witherspoon in 2023. The top true corner (Travis Hunter went second overall) last year was Jahdae Barron at 20. In 2024, Quinyon Mitchell was selected 22nd.
That recent history lesson, paired with McCoy’s injury, could put him in range for the Vikings. At cornerback, the club employs Byron Murphy and Isaiah Rodgers from last year and James Pierre was signed in free agency. Only Murphy is under contract beyond the 2026 campaign.
More secondary help could arrive in the form of a safety, as Ballentine alluded to. McNeil-Warren and Thieneman could both add talent to a room that is set to lose Harrison Smith either this year or in 2027. They have the versatility to be used in the box and deep, which is crucial in a Flores defense.
Thieneman turned heads at the scouting combine and his draft stock exploded that day with a 4.35 40-yard dash. He was the backbone of Oregon*s defense last year after starting his career at Purdue.
McNeil-Warren is the next player from Toledo’s DB school after Mitchell has established himself as one of the league’s top cornerbacks. He ran a 4.52, which is still good for a safety and he brings a bigger frame into the NFL.
The Vikings didn’t add a safety in free agency. Josh Metellus could step into an even bigger leadership role depending on Smith’s future, while rotational guys Theo Jackson and Jay Ward could also earn a promotion.
McCoy, Thieneman, and McNeil-Warren would be investments for the future but would likely still play meaningful roles in their rookie seasons.

The Los Angeles Lakers’ championship hopes just took a major hit.
NBA scoring leader Luka Dončić will miss the rest of the regular season with a Grade 2 strain of his left hamstring, the team announced Friday.
It’s unclear what his status is for the postseason.
Dončić was the main reason the Lakers climbed into the third spot in the Western Conference standings. But an injury to his leg during Los Angeles’ blowout loss in Oklahoma City Thursday has taken that all away after an MRI exam revealed the severity of the strain.

Lakers coach JJ Redick said Dončić was injured in the first half against the Thunder but was cleared to return to the game while his team was getting plastered by the defending NBA champion Thunder.
Dončić lasted only about four minutes before he spun, stopped and went down on the court in pain, leading to his departure.

The Lakers acquired Dončić in a surprising and controversial trade in February 2025, when the Dallas Mavericks sent the Latvian superstar, along with Maxi Kleber and Markieff Morris to LA in exchange for 31-year-old Anthony Davis, Max Christie and a 2029 first-round pick. The move left many fans and pundits puzzled, believing the trade was lopsided in favor of the Lakers.
The Pacific Division champion Lakers (50-27) have just five games left before the postseason, starting Sunday at Dallas.
Grade 2 hamstring strains sometimes require several weeks of recovery, but Dončić also has prior experience with hamstring issues. He missed four games right before the All-Star break with another left hamstring strain but returned to the lineup after the break.

Dončić is putting up spectacular numbers in his first full season with the Lakers, who acquired the Slovenian superstar from the Mavericks last season.
He is averaging 33.5 points, 8.3 assists and 7.7 rebounds per game for Los Angeles, and he was named the NBA’s Western Conference player of the month for March after racking up 13 consecutive 30-point performances, including seven 40-point games, a 51-point barrage against Chicago and a 60-point masterclass in Miami.
Dončić scored 600 points in March, becoming only the 10th player in NBA history to hit that mark in a single month. While LeBron James and Austin Reaves have also played well down the stretch, the Lakers depend on Dončić, who either scored or assisted on 58% of their total points in March.

The Lakers’ regular-season finale is next Sunday, April 12, at home against Utah. Their first-round playoff series is expected to start the following weekend.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A pair of NBA head coaches defended Memphis and its culture Friday following criticism by Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James that the Grizzlies should just relocate to Nashville.
Current Grizzlies coach Tuomas Iisalo and Raptors coach Darko Rajakovic, an assistant in Memphis before taking over as head coach of Toronto, said their experiences did not match the comments by James in a “Bob Does Sports” YouTube video earlier this week.
James criticized Memphis and indicated the NBA would be better off if the Grizzlies moved 200 miles east to Nashville where Tennessee’s capital city has Vanderbilt University, NASCAR and even the NHL’s Predators. He even said he might have opted to say he wouldn’t play in Memphis if the Grizzlies had the first pick in the 2003 draft.
“I can say from my own perspective that I have the complete opposite — 180-degree perspective on that,” Iisalo said. “The Memphis where we arrived less than two years ago has been very warm. Very welcoming.”
Rajakovic added: “I don’t care what the rest of the world thinks. I love the people of Memphis. I love the food. I love every single time I come over here.”
James’ criticism included NBA players having nothing to do when teams arrive in Memphis for games.
“In Memphis on a (expletive) random (expletive) Thursday,” James said. “I’m not even the first guy to talk about it in the NBA, like, ‘You guys have to move. Go over to Nashville.’”
The Raptors arrived in Memphis a day before Friday night’s game and visited St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, which treats childhood cancer patients at no charge to families. Rajakovic called the visit inspiring with his players thanking him for taking them to the hospital to meet patients.
The coaches of the Grizzlies and Raptors have short ties to Memphis with Iisalo in just his second season and first as head coach. Iisalo said Memphis features one of the NBA’s most passionate fan bases with the city rallying behind its team.
“All I can say is Memphis is the right place for the Grizzlies,” Iisalo said.

The Panthers (37-35-3, 77 points) are on the cusp of playoff elimination. Should that happen, they would become the sixth Stanley Cup champion to miss the playoffs the following season.
Florida faces long odds to get into the playoffs — the Panthers are 11 points behind the Ottawa Senators for the final Eastern Conference wild-card spot with seven games remaining and five teams between them. But it hasn’t stopped the hobbled two-time defending champions from trying to play spoiler.
Even with players like Brad Marchand, Sam Reinhart and Niko Mikkola out, Florida’s modest two-game winning streak includes wins over the Senators and the Boston Bruins, who hold the other wild-card spot.
“We’re trying to make sure that they don’t get an easy one from us,” coach Paul Maurice said after Thursday’s 2-1 home win over Boston.
Sam Bennett has points in three straight, including a goal in the Boston game. With 57 points (26 goals, 31 assists), he could top Reinhart as the team’s leading scorer in the final couple of weeks. Reinhart has 61 points, leading the team in both goals (29) and assists (32).
The Panthers may also get one of their injured players back for Saturday as the team reported forward Cole Schwindt is expected to return to action. He has not played since Feb. 26 due to a lower-body injury.
Saturday’s game marks the first of back-to-back games between the two teams, both in Pittsburgh. The Penguins (38-22-16, 92 points) look to rebound after losing 6-3 on the road to the Tampa Bay Lightning on Thursday. The Penguins, who have missed the playoffs in each of the last three seasons, currently sit in second place in the Metropolitan Division and would get first-round home-ice advantage if they stay in that spot. However, the New York Islanders are three points behind in third place, and the Columbus Blue Jackets are in fourth place, but with 88 points, they do not currently hold a playoff spot.
After the two home games with Florida, Pittsburgh will play at New Jersey, have a home-and-home with Washington and end the regular season at St. Louis. None of those teams currently sit in a playoff spot, but coach Dan Muse does not want to see his team ease up down the stretch.
“We have to turn the page quick,” Muse said after the loss to the Lightning. “There’s not going to be any easy games. Every game, every day is going to have a new challenge, and none of them are going to be easy this time of year.”
Sidney Crosby leads the team with 67 points (28 goals, 39 assists), but he has not scored a goal in seven games. His last goal came on March 18, his first game back after suffering an injury playing for Team Canada in the Olympics. Anthony Mantha leads Pittsburgh with 30 goals and has six points (four goals, two assists) during a four-game points streak. –Field Level Media

Earlier, Patidar praised Virat Kohli as the team’s top “chase master.” He said he has always admired Kohli’s batting and enjoys watching him from the dugout, highlighting his shot selection and ability to read match situations as particularly impressive.
Kohli played a match-winning, unbeaten knock of 69 off 38 deliveries, including five fours and as many sixes, against Sunrisers Hyderabad, helping the defending champions chase down the fastest 200-plus target in IPL history. Bengaluru chased down the 202-run target in just 15.4 overs in the IPL 2026 opener.
“Virat Kohli is our number one chase master, as we all know. I have always admired his batting, and watching him bat from the dugout-the way he played his shots and assessed the situation-was really good to see,” Patidar told reporters.
Patidar also lauded RCB speedster Jacob Duffy as a skilled T20 specialist, saying the team has full confidence in him and that his bowling performance and execution have been excellent.
“He’s a specialist T20 bowler, and we have a lot of confidence in him. That’s why we’ve given him a chance. The way he’s delivering and showcasing his skills has been tremendous,” he added.
Duffy took three wickets to help RCB beat Sunrisers Hyderabad by six wickets and get their IPL 2026 campaign off to a winning start. He was also named Player of the Match for his impressive spell with the ball

NEW DELHI: Punjab Kings registered an impressive five-wicket win over Chennai Super Kings in their IPL 2026 clash at Chepauk, chasing down a big target of 210 with confidence. Despite CSK putting up a strong total, PBKS handled the pressure better and sealed their second straight victory of the season.After being put in to bat, CSK built their innings around a solid partnership between Ayush Mhatre and Ruturaj Gaikwad. Mhatre was the standout performer, scoring a fluent 73 off 43 balls with a mix of boundaries and sixes.In the later stages, Sarfaraz Khan played a quick cameo, smashing 32 off just 12 balls, while Shivam Dube remained unbeaten on 45, finishing the innings strongly. Their efforts pushed CSK to a competitive total of 209/5 in 20 overs, which looked challenging on the surface.In reply, PBKS came out attacking and maintained a steady run rate throughout the chase. It will mark Takeru’s final kickboxing clash and his last chance to win ONE World Title gold. Meanwhile, “The Iron Man” has an opportunity to achieve two-sport glory and become the only person to defeat the Japanese icon twice.
Their first encounter ended in just 80 seconds, when Rodtang delivered a stunning knockout that silenced the home crowd and cut short what many believed would be a defining battle between two of the sport’s most celebrated names.
Now scheduled for five rounds, the sequel offers a far more complete proving ground. The magnitude of the contest has drawn interest of world-class strikers from around the globe, including reigning ONE Lightweight Muay Thai World Champion Regian “The Immortal” Eersel.

Eersel offered a composed and tactical assessment of the main event showdown:
“I know Rodtang has a lot of power. Takeru has to fight smarter and keep his hands higher.
“If he’s smart and moves a lot, he just has to avoid the power shots of Rodtang. Move out, move in, move out, move in. Then, he can win – not easily, but he can win.”
When Rodtang and Takeru first collided at ONE 172 in March 2025, the fight never had the opportunity to evolve. A brief exchange quickly escalated before the Thai’s trademark power ended the tilt almost instantly.
That abrupt finish left little room for adjustments or strategy to take shape. It is precisely the kind of scenario Eersel believes must be avoided if the former three-division K-1 Champion hopes to even the score, win the belt, and retire on top.
The Dutch-Surinamese kingpin added:
“It takes a lot of conditioning and drilling to have that kind of game plan. It’s a little bit like I did with Alexis [Nicolas] the second time – move out, move in, move out, move in. If you fight like that, you get away from the danger.
“If not, if you’re going to stand and bang. That’s Rodtang’s game. Then, you’re not going to make it out.”
Eersel speaks from experience. In his own rivalry with the French kickboxer, the 33-year-old made the necessary adjustments in their ONE Lightweight Kickboxing World Title rematch in October 2024 to avenge an earlier defeat, relying on disciplined movement and controlled engagements rather than prolonged exchanges.

Ultimately, he emerged victorious once again in their trilogy bout at ONE Fight Night 30 six months later.
That same approach, he suggests, could be the key for the “Natural Born Krusher.” Against a pressure fighter like Rodtang, maintaining distance and avoiding extended firefights is not just a strategy. It is a requirement.

“You have two scenarios because it’s for an interim title now. If Takeru moves around the whole five rounds, he can win. But if he stands toe-to-toe, he’s not going to make it. So, he has to avoid that kind of situation.”

While offering insight into one of the year’s biggest rematches, Regian Eersel is preparing for a pivotal contest of his own.
On Friday, April 10, he will face Rungrawee “Legatron” Sitsongpeenong for the vacant ONE Lightweight Kickboxing World Title in the main event of The Inner Circle, airing live in Asia primetime from Lumpinee Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand.
The bout places two elite strikers on a collision course with 26 pounds of gold on the line.

For Eersel, it represents a chance to reclaim the belt that first elevated him to global prominence and restore his status as a two-sport ONE World Champion. For Rungrawee, it is an opportunity to capture the biggest prize of his career in front of a home crowd and cement his position among the sport’s elite.

“I’m very excited. I hope I get my baby back, my first baby, my first title in ONE Championship. I won it in 2019. So yeah, in 2026, I hope to reclaim it, win it again, and become a double champ again.”
With a 64-5 professional record that equates to a remarkable 93 percent winning rate, Eersel has built one of the most consistent careers in modern striking.
“The Immortal” has also amassed 13 victories in ONE Championship, establishing himself as the gold standard across both Muay Thai and kickboxing.

Inside the ring, the Sityodtong Amsterdam product is defined by rhythm and precision. His long frame allows him to control range, while his high-volume combinations and composure enable him to dictate tempo against top opposition.
But Rungrawee presents a different kind of challenge. The Thai striker, who holds a 158-48 career record, has earned his “Legatron” nickname through devastating low kicks that have dismantled opponents over time. He combines traditional Muay Thai fundamentals with fight-altering power.
Their meeting is a classic stylistic clash. It’s Eersel’s fluid, high-output kickboxing colliding with Rungrawee’s calculated destruction.

“He’s a good fighter. Southpaw fighter. Strong legs, big legs. He’s smart. Typical Muay Thai fighter. He fights a little bit on the counter also. So, I’m curious how he will do against me.”
