Okocha Reveals How He Got Famous ‘Jay-Jay’ Nickname
Nigerian football legend Austin “Jay-Jay” Okocha has revealed how he got the nickname that became a major part of his football career.
Okocha said the name started during his childhood when he played football on the streets with his brothers.
According to the former Super Eagles captain, there were several boys called Austin in his neighbourhood, making it difficult for people to know which one they were referring to.
His friends then began calling him “Austin Jay-Jay’s brother”, and the name later became shortened to “Jay-Jay”.
“It started in the neighbourhood where we grew up. All of us were footballers; we were just on the street playing, and my two brothers played as well.
“We had a few Austins then, so to identify which Austin was which, they started calling me Austin Jay-Jay’s brother. From there, Jay-Jay stuck,” Okocha said during an appearance on the ObiOne Podcast.
He also explained that the nickname became even more useful when he travelled abroad because some people found it difficult to pronounce his real name, Augustine.
“When I travelled, some people struggled to pronounce my name, Augustine, so Jay-Jay was a lot easier. I decided to adopt the name and put it in my passport. I still pay royalties to my brother,” he added.
Okocha’s full name is Augustine Azuka Okocha, but “Jay-Jay” became the name by which he was known around the world.
The former Paris Saint-Germain, Bolton Wanderers and Fenerbahçe midfielder is widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s greatest footballers, with his creativity, dribbling skills and flair earning him praise throughout his career.
Even after retiring from professional football, the name “Jay-Jay” remains closely linked to Okocha’s remarkable legacy.
