Paula Badosa is back in the third round of the US Open after defeating Daria Kasatkina 6-1, 6-4.
It is Badosa’s first US Open win since 2024, when she reached the quarterfinals. She missed last year’s tournament because of injury.
After the match, Badosa spoke about how good she feels physically after missing the last few weeks.
“I’m feeling really well. I haven’t played for the last few weeks. But now my body is healthy. That’s the most important.”
She also opened up about what returning to New York means to her.
“I was really, really sad last year I had to miss this tournament. Especially with the great memories I have. Coming back here getting the 1st round win in front of all of you, it’s a special city for me. I was born here. I have a special connection. A part of my heart is always gonna be in New York.”
Badosa was also asked about her eye-catching tennis kit, with the interviewer joking that she was giving “Statue of Liberty” vibes.
“Yeah honestly this is my favorite color. I think it suits me pretty well maybe with the eyes . I think it’s a very nice color. When I saw the options I could play I chose this one because I think it’s a beautiful color. Don’t you agree guys?”
On court, Badosa was in control for most of the match. She had been leading 6-1, 5-4 at 40-40 when rain suspended play the previous night, having already earned three match points. She returned to finish the job and booked a huge third-round clash with Coco Gauff. Badosa leads Gauff 5-3 in their head-to-head record.
