PSG have collected nine trophies in the past two seasons under Luis Enrique.

“We set out ambitious objectives and we continue to do so,” he said. “In this moment it’s a different scenario because everyone thinks we can win again. But we need to show our level on the pitch.

“If you look back in history it’s difficult to find a team that wins all the time – but that’s what we are striving for.”

Luis Enrique has only had one week of pre-season with his players who reached the latter stages of the World Cup.

That is because they needed a break before returning for pre-season but the PSG manager isn’t overly pleased with the situation.

“We are going to train today,” Enrique told reporters yesterday. “We are tying to analyse everything and after that we are going to make our decision.

“It’s a surreal situation. The international players, French, Spanish, arrived on Monday. That’s just one week.

“But we prepared in the best way possible and we’re happy to play this game, because it means we won an important title, the Champions League. It’s very important for us and our club to win. But in terms of preparation, it’s not what it should have been.”

One of the longest rumours of the summer transfer window has been Liverpool interest in PSG winger Bradley Barcola. So is he heading to the Premier League?

“I don’t know and I don’t want to speak about any player individually,” PSG manager Luis Enrique said.

“Because it’s always dangerous when you are asking something positive or negative about a player. I stay focused on my team.”

His answer wasn’t the most revealing was it?

The 23-year-old is understood to be a target for new Reds boss Andoni Iraola as he looks to strengthen his squad at Anfield.

Another question posed to Unai Emery is what the future looks like for him and for Aston Villa.

“I am so, so, so happy how the club is getting the commitment together with us, and how we are getting better, keeping our consistency in the Premier League, being in top five, last year top six, but two years ago, and this year fourth, and how we finished the first year as well playing in Conference League, I think this is the objective we have, how we can, even with the circumstances we have, be consistent,” Emery responded.

“And it’s not changing, but the effort (we are) doing, the club, is really a huge effort to try to be in the same direction like I am trying to be. And they are trying to extend now, Villa Park, to achieve 50,000 supporters next year. This is one step forward, the club as well, is trying to do.”

Speaking at his pre-match press conference yesterday, Emery said: “We are doing a good pre-season. We are testing and we are doing practice, trying to improve things for tomorrow, of course, and then the most important is the season.

“But tomorrow we are going to play one match, very important for our careers as a coach, as players, as a club – it’s a trophy.

“It’s one thing that can make us proud of how we are, and how we arrived here, and why we can have tomorrow a huge motivation to get our best – 6,000 supporters from Birmingham tomorrow, give us the responsibility as well to try to play for them.”

Villa’s manager sat down and spoke to the media ahead of tonight’s fixture and explained how he is excited by the prospect of potentially winning another trophy.

“Of course, it’s an opportunity, always,” Emery said. “A trophy is something that can give us a special moment, and to play for trophies, as a professional, is our objective.

“Then, if we are winning, of course we are happy. If we are not winning, we are not happy, but playing against the team now, it’s PSG, of course, they are favourites.

“But I am looking forward to playing, how we can test this match, against them, with our capacity, and with the moment we have now, with the players we have now.”
