The Cleveland Guardians (54-53) and the Cincinnati Reds (49-55) meet at Great American Ball Park on the banks of the Ohio River in the battle of the Buckeye State. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m. ET, and the game can be viewed or streamed on ESPN.
As luck has it, I am in the Queen City this week, and if the kids get tired of Kings Island Amusement Park in the next couple of days, I wouldn’t mind finding our way over to the yard for some ball, dogs with Skyline Chili and other various ballpark snacks.
The Guardians had a rough time on the Suncoast of Florida, as the Tampa Bay Rays not only swept Cleveland, but the Guards were shut out in each of the final two games of the series. The Cleveland pitching staff bounced back after an 11-3 loss Friday, as it allowed just four runs in the past two outings. However, the offense needs to do something, or management needs to go out and grab a bat.
Meanwhile, the Reds did a good job at Busch Stadium II in St. Louis, picking up two wins in three at-bats to win the series. That’s the third consecutive series victory for Cincinnati, who improved to 6-3 in the past nine games, all on the road.
The last time we saw Cincinnati at GABP, it suffered a series loss to the division-rival Chicago Cubs July 10-12. In fact, while the Reds have won three straight series on the road, they’ve dropped four consecutive series at home, going 3-9 in the past 12 outings, including two series losses against division rivals.
Cleveland turns to RHP Slade Cecconi (4-7, 4.60 ERA, 1.45 WHIP) to snap the team’s skid. The Guardians are in a tailspin, losing each of the past five games, while scoring just four total runs in the past four outings. As luck has it, the last time it had an offensive eruption, it scored six for Cecconi at home against the Minnesota Twins last Wednesday, but the Twins dropped a 10-spot.
Cincinnati counters with RHP Chase Burns (12-1, 2.42 ERA, 1.11 WHIP) across his 19 starts this season. He has been a godsend for the Cincinnati rotation, especially since he has accounted for 24.5% of the team’s victory total.
The Reds need Burns to stay hot, as Cleveland won two of three meetings with Cincinnati at Progressive Field May 15-17, with the Guardians averaging 7.7 runs per game (RPG) in the three-game set. It’s baseball, and Cleveland is due after getting blanked in back-to-back games. But, it still seems rather improbable it will explode against one of the best pitchers, statistically, in the National League.
While the Over cashed in the first three meetings in Cleveland in mid-May, the lean is to the UNDER 8.5 (-105).
And while you’ll be eating a little bit more chalk than I’d like, REDS ML (-174) is a strong play based on the red-hot Burns, and the ice-cold Cleveland offense. Let’s just hope Cecconi doesn’t get tuned up. The Reds have won four of five games, with the Under going 4-1 in that span. Cincinnati has totaled 18 runs in the past six games (3.0 RPG), while allowing just 17 runs (3.4 RPG) in the past five outings. A same-game parlay (SGP) is a solid +183, which is worth a roll of the dice.
After several major cliffhangers in Episode 6, House of the Dragon Season 3 Episode 7 is set to release on August 2, 2026, on HBO Max. The upcoming episode will likely reveal Corlys Velaryon’s fate after the Hightower ambush while also following the consequences of Ser Criston Cole’s death in the Riverlands.
Rhaenyra could find herself under even greater pressure as unrest spreads through King’s Landing and cracks continue to emerge within her own faction. Alicent’s journey to Harrenhal is also expected to move forward, placing her on a collision course with Aemond and Alys Rivers.
Also, Ormund Hightower may push ahead with his plans at Tumbleton after surviving an assassination attempt, while Hugh, Ulf and the other dragonriders could play increasingly important roles as both sides prepare for the next stage of the war.

Lewis Hamilton said he remained optimistic about his hopes of winning a record eighth drivers world championship this year despite collecting another penalty in Sunday’s Hungarian Grand Prix.
The seven-time champion Ferrari driver, who finished classified fifth having finished fourth on the road before taking a five-second penalty, said he had to “work hard not to give the stewards any more opportunities to give me penalties”.

He was adjudged to have exceeded the pit lane speed limit by 0.1 kph during a stop that he said, after the race, was unnecessary and a mistake by the team.

“I definitely don’t think we should have taken the last stop,” he said, referring to Ferrari’s decision to call him in during a late Virtual Safety Car intervention to swap from hard tyres to softs for the final laps.
“The call came just before the pit entry and I didn’t have time to debate it. You’ve got to trust the decision that’s been taken, but in hindsight my tyres were totally fine.
“I probably would have lost out to Max (Verstappen, who finished second), but I think I could have kept third at least. It just opened the door to getting that penalty at the end.”

Asked if he was upbeat for the second half of the season, as he seeks to close a 50-point deficit behind championship leader Kimi Antonelli of Mercedes, Hamilton was positive.
“I definitely am,” he said. “I’m massively grateful to the team because they’ve done a really great job in the first half.
“I think the last three races from me have not been great, with lots of mistakes. I’ve had a lot of penalties… I’ve got to work hard hard not to give them any more opportunities for penalties.”

Nigeria’s impressive start to the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games continued on Monday as 23-year-old weightlifter Edidiong Joseph Umoafia won gold in the men’s 71kg event.
The Akwa Ibom-born star produced another brilliant performance to give Team Nigeria its fourth gold medal of the Games.
Umoafia took control of the competition with a superb 147kg lift in the snatch before finishing strongly in the clean and jerk to secure the gold medal.
He finished ahead of John Lautafi Tafi of Samoa, who claimed silver, while Ezekiel Moses of Nauru settled for bronze.
His victory came a day after Team Nigeria enjoyed a successful opening day, winning three gold and three silver medals.
The para powerlifting team led the way, with Esther Nworgu, Folashade Oluwafemiayo and Riluwan Idris all winning gold medals. Roland Ezuruike, Esther Oyema and Rita Ferdinand added silver medals, with several athletes breaking world and Commonwealth Games records.
Another Akwa Ibom athlete, Ruth Nyong, also made Nigeria proud by winning silver in the women’s 48kg weightlifting event.
Umoafia’s triumph means Team Nigeria has now won four gold and three silver medals, with the country’s athletes continuing to shine in Glasgow.
Nigeria will hope to build on the strong start as more events take place in the coming days.

Commonwealth Games silver medallist Murali Sreeshankar and swimmer Sajan Prakash advanced to the finals of their respective events after impressive qualification performances at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games on Monday. Sreeshankar, a silver medallist at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, needed just one attempt to qualify for the men’s long jump final. The Indian cleared the automatic qualification mark of 8.00m with a leap of 8.01m in his opening effort, according to ESPN. Athletes who crossed the 8.00m mark or finished among the top 12 progressed to the final. Sreeshankar’s effort comfortably secured his place as he eyes an upgrade from the silver medal he won in Birmingham four years ago.
In swimming, Sajan Prakash booked his spot in the men’s 200m butterfly final after clocking 1:58.59 to finish second in Heat 2.
The Indian was fourth after the opening 50m before producing a strong middle section to move into the lead at the halfway stage with a split of 56.31 seconds. Home favourite Duncan Scott overtook him in the closing stages to win the heat, but Sajan’s time was enough to qualify automatically for the final.
His 1:58.59 was the seventh-fastest time across the three heats, earning him one of the eight places in the final, although it was slower than his personal best of 1:57.09.
The two qualification results boosted India’s hopes of adding to its medal tally at the CWG 2026. India have won four medals at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games so far. Olympic medallist Mirabai Chanu claimed the country’s only gold in the women’s 48kg weightlifting event, while Rishikanta Singh (men’s 60kg) and Muthupandi Raja (men’s 65kg) secured silver medals in weightlifting. Jhandu Kumar opened India’s account with a bronze in the men’s heavyweight para powerlifting event.

Planet Red and Sabaj, both geldings trained by Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr, are commencing their spring preparations with differing ultimate goals, but they may encounter each other along the way.
The pair completed their first jumpouts of the current campaign at Cranbourne on Monday morning.
Sabaj finished third, just under two lengths behind Proved, without being asked for a serious effort in its initial hitout. Planet Red secured second place in a later heat, beaten approximately 2-1/2 lengths by Spirit Of Wealth.
This was the most demanding piece of work for each horse this campaign. Both are expected to resume racing in the Group 1 Memsie Stakes (1400m) on August 29, followed by the Group 1 Toorak Handicap (1600m), before targeting major spring races in Sydney.
“I think they’re running in the hot Memsie,” Price said.
“With their rating, the calendar pushes you in that way. I think they’ll both kick off there because of their rating and the timing of it.
“They’re both nice horses and they’re both sort of Toorak Handicap horses.”
Provided everything progresses smoothly until the Toorak Handicap, which will be held at Caulfield on October 10, Planet Red is then expected to head towards the Golden Eagle (1500m). This year marks the first time the race will be run at Group 1 level.
Price and Kent achieved success in the 2021 Golden Eagle with I’m Thunderstruck, a horse who also won the Toorak Handicap. Price noted that the $10 million event is a compelling target for the gelding, who had previously finished runner-up in both the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas and Australian Guineas earlier this season.
“His run in the Caulfield Guineas was very good, drawn a bad gate, and his run in the Australian Guineas was very good, drawn a bad gate, so we were forced to ride cold in both those races,” he commented on the son of Admire Mars.
“The Golden Eagle is a fast 1500. You need a horse with a pretty good turn of foot and, for $10m and four-year-olds, I think he’ll be in it.”
Sabaj’s Sydney campaign will focus on the $2 million Five Diamonds (1800m), a race exclusively for five-year-olds, scheduled for November 7.
The son of Manhattan Rain has won five of his 12 starts. While he has not won in his three starts this year, he did finish fourth in both the Group 1 All-Star Mile (1600m) and Australian Cup (2000m).
“He’s a nice horse and I think anywhere between a mile and 2000 (is suitable),” Price said.
“I reckon the Five Diamonds for him, because he will be a five-year-old.
“It’s 1800, that’d be beautiful. That’ll be a nice race for him.”

Just a week after seeing his place in the Indian team being questioned, 15-year-old prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has completely rewritten the script. In the first T20I of the series, Sooryavanshi slammed his maiden T20I fifty off just 18 balls in the opening match. He ended the series with a mature 81 off 49 balls.
What set Sooryavanshi’s performances apart in Harare was not merely raw power, but an impressive tactical adaptability. In fact, India’s head coach for the series, VVS Laxman, couldn’t believe how mature the teenager had become, having only started to make waves in Indian cricket a couple of years ago.

The Selection Headache:
Sooryavanshi’s meteoric rise leaves the Indian team management facing a selection conundrum that can’t really be ‘fairly’ resolved. His dominance at the top of the order has directly challenged established names.
Left out of the Zimbabwe tour following quiet outings, Sanju Samson now faces an uphill task to reclaim his spot. Former cricketers like Irfan Pathan have openly noted that when a youngster takes his chance with such conviction, returning to the XI becomes extraordinarily difficult for the incumbent.
Abhishek Sharma, on the other hand, continues to endure a prolonged slump, recording consecutive low scores (2, 8, 1, 3, 16, 10). With Sooryavanshi demonstrating both explosive hitting and innings-building ability, pressure on Abhishek — the man ranked No. 2 in ICC Rankings for batters — is rapidly increasing.
At just 15 years old, Sooryavanshi has displayed a rare blend of fearless strokeplay and tactical awareness beyond his years that arguably no player of his age ever has. As India look towards upcoming international assignments and major tournaments, the selectors no longer have the option to simply leave Sooryavanshi out. But breaking the opening pair of Abhishek and Samson — the duo who won India the T20 World Cup this year — isn’t going to be easy either.
