Rivers United began their CAF Champions League campaign with a 1-1 draw against San Pedro of Côte d’Ivoire in the first leg of their first preliminary round tie at the Laurent Pokou Stadium on Saturday.
The two teams created several chances in the first half but neither side could find the back of the net before the break.
San Pedro eventually took the lead 11 minutes into the second half when Issouf Dosso scored to put the home side ahead.
Rivers United responded well and found their equaliser in the 69th minute through substitute Iyowuna Douglas.
The Nigerian side held on to secure a valuable away draw ahead of the return leg.
Rivers United will host San Pedro in the second leg at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo next Sunday.
The Nigerian club will be hoping to use home advantage to secure a place in the next round of the CAF Champions League.
Meanwhile, Nigeria’s other representative in the competition, Rangers, will begin their campaign against SOBEMAP FC of Benin Republic at the Moshood Abiola Sports Complex in Abeokuta on Sunday.
