Ryan Garcia names the most ‘overrated’ fighter in boxing: “He hasn’t done anything”

Ryan Garcia has divided opinion by naming a former unified world champion as the most “overrated” fighter in boxing.

Garcia arguably put in the best performance of his career when he unanimously outpointed Mario Barrios last Saturday, becoming the WBC world welterweight champion.

It means his most notable victories have come against Barrios, Oscar Duarte and Luke Campbell – all solid operators – but some may claim the American is still yet to defeat an undeniably world-class opponent.

He did, of course, come close to doing just that in 2024, only for his majority decision win over Devin Haney to be overturned to a no-contest due to him testing positive for ostarine, a banned substance.

But while his own credentials at world level remain questionable, Garcia has nonetheless pointed towards Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis as being the most overrated big-name fighter in the sport today.

Ennis made his mark at 147lbs last year, unifying the IBF and WBA world titles with a sixth-round stoppage victory over Eimantas Stanionis.

Prior to that, his most notable scalp arguably came against David Avanesyan, a two-time world title challenger, who he stopped in the fifth round of their 2024 encounter.

Now campaigning at 154lbs, ‘Boots’ comes off a first-round finish over Uisma Lima in October, though Garcia still struggles to regard him as one of the sport’s finest pound-for-pound operators.

Speaking with YouTuber N3ON, ‘King Ry’ explained why he feels Ennis is getting credit he doesn’t deserve.

“I think Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis is overrated at this point. He hasn’t done anything in the sport. Nothing against him, I just think he’s overrated.”

With Ennis angling for a mouth-watering super-welterweight showdown with Vergil Ortiz Jr, perhaps he will soon prove that he is, in fact, one of the very best. If legal issues on Ortiz’s side prevent the match-up from taking place, promoter Eddie Hearn will look to manoeuvre ‘Boots’ into a world title clash at 154 quickly, with Josh Kelly a possibility.

Welcome to GOLF’s Top 100 Teacher roundtable, where some of the best instructors in the business answer the game’s most pressing questions. The goal? To help your game and lower your scores ASAP.

Practicing in a simulator is a great way to get some reps during the winter. But as practice in your hitting bay, you may become overwhelmed by the amount of data the sim throws at you.

With each shot you hit, there are dozens of data points recorded and shared on screen, This is great for optimizing your swing, but for most golfers, it can also be a bit of information overload.

So, when you go to the sim to hit balls, which data points should you really be focused on? We asked a panel of Top 100 Teachers for their input.

1. Low point

Low point, swing direction and smash factor are what I’d recommend. Simulator mats provide a false security because most golfers don’t really know if they have the right swing bottom. Solid hits with the low point in the right place, heading in the right direction will get you ready for the season in the real world, on the grass. —Martin Chuck

2. Clubface keys

Any piece of data that has to deal with contact on the face (ball speed, smash factor, and location) is useful, but it also depends on what you are trying to improve. Clubface data is important for most recreational golfers, though, so keep an eye on that. —Michael Hunt

3. Start direction

Start direction and spin axis. If your draws are starting right and the spins axis is left (or vice versus) over and over again, you’ve created a reliable shot pattern. From there you can work on tightening up the numbers or fine tuning others. —Jason Carbone

Former Auburn coach Bruce Pearl calls for ‘free Iran’ after US-Israel strikes

Former Auburn men’s basketball coach Bruce Pearl called Iran the “head of the snake” and backed President Donald Trump hours after the United States and Israel launched a joint attack on the country. 

Pearl, one of a handful of Jewish coaches in college basketball before his retirement in September, took to social media shortly after the U.S. joined Israel in launching preemptive strikes against Iran on Saturday morning.

“President Trump gave Iran a chance to avoid War by simply agreeing to No Nukes. Iran launched middles at other Arab countries and Israel, huge mistake! Saudi Arabia joins our side,” Pearl wrote in post on X.

“Iran is head of the snake. President Trump is the leader of the free world. Defeat Evil then Peace!”

 In an earlier post on X, Pearl made a plea for a “free Iran” and “real peace” in the Middle East. 

“Lord Hear Our Prayer Please put your hedge of protection over our heroic armed service as they target Iran military and missile sites with Operation Epic Fury. Pray for the innocent Pray for the enemy to be destroyed, a free Iran and then for real Peace in the Middle East.”

In video remarks posted to Truth Social, Trump encouraged the Iranian people to take over their government once the United States and Israel finished “major combat operations” in Iran.

“The hour of your freedom is at hand. Stay sheltered. Don’t leave your home. It’s very dangerous outside,” he said addressing the Iranian people. “This will be, probably, your only chance for generations. For many years, you have asked for America’s help, but you never got it. No President was willing to do what I am willing to do tonight. Now you have a President who is giving you what you want.”

Iran launched retaliatory missile strikes targeting U.S. facilities in multiple countries. Fox News’ Jennifer Griffin reported that approximately 40 missiles had landed in Israel. Additionally, Iran appeared to hit the U.S. Navy’s Fifth Fleet, but no casualties were reported. Iran also launched missiles at Saudi Arabia and Jordan, where the U.S. has squadrons of advanced fighter jets, Griffin added.

Pearl, an outspoken supporter of Israel since the Oct. 7 attacks, was named chairman of the board of directors for the U.S. Israel Education Association (USIEA) in April. At the time of the announcement, Pearl said he was “proud to continue advocating for greater understanding and collaboration” between the U.S. and Israel.

6 keys for rolling your lag putts within gimme range

If you are going to score well and be rewarded when you do hit the ball well, you absolutely need to control distance on your longer putts. You need to be able to roll your first putt within two to three feet so you have a stress-free second putt.

The ideal situation is for your next putt to be so close that you have an easy tap-in. This is one of the biggest differences between professional and recreational golfers.

Here’s how you can improve your distance control and consistently roll your first putt close and reduce three-putts.

1. Center contact

All of golf starts with good technique and solid contact in the center of the face. If you strike the ball off-center, both distance and direction tend to become inconsistent and unpredictable.

You can practice on the putting green this with a simple two-tee drill. Place a tee on either side of your golf ball and practice stroking the putter through without contacting either tee. If you hit a tee, you are missing the center of the putter face.

2. Proper path

A sound path has a direct influence on distance control. There are many excellent putting training aids you can use to monitor this. Arc boards and alignment aids are especially helpful for improving your path. One of my favorite training aids is the alignment ball, which I use in both practice and teaching.

3. Fewer moving parts

An absolute must for good putting and distance control is keeping your body as still as possible. Your head, knees and lower body should remain very steady. Even the smallest amount of unnecessary movement can alter distance and direction.

Watch skilled putters on television and notice how little their lower bodies move. Then watch most recreational golfers and you will see a surprising number of moving parts. Make a conscious effort to minimize movement so you can rely on one primary factor — stroke size — to control distance, rather than several competing variables.

4. Proper stroke size

The length of your backstroke is the key factor in controlling distance. A shorter backstroke naturally produces less speed, while a longer backstroke generates more speed and therefore more distance.

If you take the putter back the correct length and allow it to swing through freely, the ball should roll the proper distance. This means you need to become very precise with small adjustments to your stroke length.

5. Be even

Ideally, your stroke should be balanced and consistent. The length of the stroke should be relatively even going back and through. Small variations are acceptable, but overall the motion should feel symmetrical.

Your rhythm should also remain steady. You should not need to consciously accelerate or decelerate if you have properly regulated your stroke size.

Finally, maintain consistent grip pressure. The exact pressure is your preference, but it should not change significantly during the stroke. Consistent grip pressure is another excellent way to promote steady rhythm.

6. Practice, practice, practice

There are many effective drills for improving distance control. Focused practice can go a long way toward mastering this skill.

Add dedicated putting time to your routine. This does not mean rolling a few putts for 10 minutes before a round. It means intentionally committing time to improvement. A simple drill is going back and forth between two holes with the goal of two-putting or better a certain number of times in a row.

Distance control is one of the areas where a small investment of time can pay tremendous dividends.v

Report: Mavericks converting Canada’s Ryan Nembhard to standard NBA contract

Another Canadian appears to be sticking around the NBA for the foreseeable future.

A native of Aurora, Ont., the 22-year-old was on a two-way contract with the Mavericks this season after going undrafted in June 2025. Ryan’s older brother is Andrew Nembhard, a starting guard for the Indiana Pacers and a Canadian senior men’s national team member.

Since making his way to Dallas, the younger Nembhard has quickly shown why he was considered one of the NCAA’s top floor generals over his four collegiate seasons.

Through 38 appearances in the NBA, Nembhard is averaging 6.7 points, 1.8 rebounds and 4.9 assists, while shooting 37.9 per cent from beyond the arc. The Gonzaga product’s assist ratio per 100 possessions is the fifth-highest in the NBA among players to have made at least 30 appearances, right behind Toronto Raptors sophomore and backup point guard Jamal Shead.

Nembhard has also been a serviceable fill-in as a starter, stepping into the first five on 17 occasions in his first NBA season, averaging 9.9 points, 2.3 rebounds and 6.1 assists, while shooting 44.4 per cent from distance. He’s also been productive in the G League, averaging 23.0 points, 4.2 rebounds, 10.5 assists and 1.0 steals through six games with the Texas Legends.

Before joining the Mavs on a two-way deal, Nembhard built a decorated resume at the college level. From Big East freshman of the year (2021) with Creighton, to a two-time All-WCC first-teamer with Gonzaga (2024, 2025), and then leading the NCAA in assists as a senior. Nembhard, like his older brother, has also represented Canada at the international level, earning bronze at the FIBA U-19 World Cup.

And while the Mavericks sort out a guard rotation — while Kyrie Irving continues to rehab from injury — next to rookie phenom Cooper Flagg, it appears Nembhard has done enough to be part of that conversation moving forward.

According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, the Mavericks’ decision to waive Tyus Jones less than a day prior to Saturday’s news was made to create a roster spot for Nembhard and his new two-year NBA deal.

Donald Trump unhappy with FBI director Kash Patel over controversial Olympic locker-room celebration: Report

FBI Director Kash Patel’s locker room celebration with the U.S. men’s hockey team at the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics has landed him in hot water with President Donald Trump, according to sources familiar with the matter.

Videos of Patel celebrating in the locker room surfaced following Team USA’s 2-1 overtime victory against Canada which marked the first American men’s hockey gold medal since the legendary 1980 “Miracle on Ice.” The footage captured Patel chugging beer, banging on tables and joining in raucous celebrations with the players.

However, Trump has repeatedly expressed his disappointment to Patel about the incident, a person familiar with the conversation revealed to NBC News. The president was also displeased with Patel’s use of a government jet to travel to Italy for the Olympics.

“Trump — who does not drink — told Patel he was unhappy not only with that scene, but also with Patel’s use of government aircraft for the trip to Milan, Italy, according to the person familiar with the matter,” NBC News reported.

The timing of the trip raised eyebrows as it coincided with a shooting incident at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida where an armed individual breached the security perimeter. Though Trump was not present during the incident, critics questioned whether the FBI director should have been abroad during such a significant security event.

Kash Patel defended his Olympic attendance

Patel has defended his presence at the Olympics stating the trip served official purposes beyond athletic spectating. He maintained that he met with Italian law enforcement and U.S. agencies providing security for the international event as well as overseeing protection for the estimated 250,000 American citizens who traveled to Milan.

“For the very concerned media — yes, I love America and was extremely humbled when my friends, the newly minted Gold Medal winners on Team USA, invited me into the locker room to celebrate this historic moment with the boys,” Patel wrote on X following the controversy.

The FBI declined to comment on Trump’s reported displeasure. White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson issued a statement emphasizing the administration’s confidence in Patel and highlighting crime rates “dropping across the board” as evidence of successful implementation of the president’s law enforcement agenda.

This is not the first time Patel has faced scrutiny over his use of FBI aircraft. Senator Dick Durbin, the ranking Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee previously requested that the Justice Department’s inspector general investigate what he characterized as Patel’s “misuse or mismanagement of government resources.”
