An inside barrier draw, typically seen as an advantage for many gallopers, is the sole reservation for jockey Tommy Berry concerning the prospects of Apocalyptic in Saturday’s Sheraco Stakes.

The Michael Freedman-trained mare has drawn the coveted rails position for the 1200-metre race at Rosehill, a draw Berry suggests might not be ideal given the horse’s preference for ample galloping room.

“Barrier one around Rosehill is probably going to be a little bit tricky,” Berry commented. “She’s going to be in a tricky spot at some stage, but she is going well enough to perform to a good level.”

Notwithstanding the barrier draw, Berry is adamant that Apocalyptic is performing at her absolute best.

After winning the Group 1 Flight Stakes last spring, her form in two autumn starts didn’t quite meet expectations. However, her return effort in the Toy Show Quality (1100m) was highly pleasing, where she charged from second-last to finish third, beaten by a narrow margin.

“They were probably a little bit sharp for her over the 1100,” he explained. “We were hoping to be closer, but they were running ‘ten-and-a-halfs’ (seconds to the furlong) and that’s too quick for her as a travelling speed. Then she’s run home in about 33 (seconds) for the last 600, so she’s done a good job. That was her tiring a bit late too and she has taken good improvement from the run.”

“Her work on Tuesday was as good as it’s ever been. “We’re pretty keen on her chances. I would have loved a barrier a bit more in the middle, but you can’t have everything go your way.”

The Sheraco Stakes has a history of being won by exceptional mares, including More Joyous, Catkins, and Entriviere. Sunshine In Paris claimed the prize two years prior before her subsequent run in The Everest. “It’s a big jump in grade, but there was a lot of merit to his Canterbury win. He had a big weight, and it was very soft. He gives that nice horse feel so let’s hope he can step up. He’s a colt with a great attitude and that’s half the battle.”

Trained by Brad Widdup, Tenenbaum was a $750,000 yearling purchase for stable supporters, Mulberry Racing.

From barrier six, he is drawn to enjoy a favourable run, and as a brother to the 2024 Hong Kong Derby (2000m) winner Cap Ferrat, should appreciate a distance rise to 1400 metres.

Schofield has secured the mount on Cormier for Paul Messara and Leah Gavranich in the Run To The Rose (1200m), filling in for regular rider Aaron Bullock who is unable to manage the colt’s 55kg weight.

An impressive winner of his initial start at Scone, Cormier then recorded consecutive second placings to Tron Bolt, including in the Group 1 J J Atkins (1600m) at Eagle Farm in June.

“I’ve never ridden him before, but I know him as well as I can without riding him,” Schofield said. “He’s a horse with a good deal of quality, he’s first-up and has a light weight. I’m just filling in for Aaron Bullock, but I’m thrilled to get the ride and hopefully I can make it count.”

Cormier will again face Tron Bolt in the Run To The Rose, which has attracted a characteristically strong field headed by Champagne Stakes winner Fireball, Golden Slipper placegetter Music Time and unbeaten blueblood St Gotthard.

The Ciaron Maher stable has a well-defined 12-month blueprint for Shockletz, which they are hopeful will prove fruitful at Flemington.

The 2026 Melbourne Cup has been a long-term objective for the daughter of Shocking, a horse who himself triumphed in the Cup.

However, Shockletz must earn her way into the Cup calculations, a goal the Maher team aims to achieve this Saturday in the Group 3 Archer Stakes over 2500 metres.

Victory in the Archer Stakes grants the winner automatic entry into the Melbourne Cup (3200m) at Flemington on November 3, bypassing the ballot.

Another ‘Cup qualifier’ race will be held at Flemington, The Bart Cummings on October 3, with the Geelong Cup and Moonee Valley Gold Cup following later that month, both also offering ballot exemptions to their winners.

Twelve months ago, Shockletz enjoyed a strong period of form, winning four races with Harry Coffey in the saddle.

Her last win in that successful stretch was in October, with her sole subsequent victory coming at Pakenham in December.

Coffey is set to ride the mare again on Saturday, and Jack Turnbull, the National Assistant Trainer for Ciaron Maher Racing, confirmed that blinkers will be applied.

“We’ve put some headgear on her,” Turnbull said.

“She travels well, but when they quicken, she’s flat-footed, and then she picks up again.

“We are third-up, a mile-and-a-half, essentially, and a bit of headgear, it should play to her favour, plus she likes big tracks and this has been a 12-month plan for her.

“We were conscious of what she did two preps ago and then we freshened her up to be on fresher legs, so that if she does qualify, she has not been taxed come the bigger races.”

The Maher team has a history of success with stayers who race through the winter and subsequently perform strongly in the Melbourne Cup.

Turnbull pointed to Persan, Grand Promenade, and Berkshire Breeze as horses that fit this profile.

Stablemate Jennivamoose is also entered for The Archer, having finished fourth in the race last year.

Jennivamoose has had only two starts since, finishing third on both occasions at Caulfield, and Turnbull indicated she will appreciate the rise in distance.

“She ran enormous at Caulfield last time,” Turnbull said.

“She’s had two wide gates this prep and had to go back and made really good ground.

“We’re looking forward to her getting out to this trip.”

European champion Jakob Ingebrigtsen produced another barnstorming run to win the men’s 5000m at the inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championships in Budapest.

The Paris Olympic champion kept a low profile in the middle of the pack before storming around the outside to surge clear in the closing 100m.

American Parker Wolfe came to the front at the bell but was unable to prevent Ingebrigtsen powering away to a comprehensive victory, winning in 12:59.24. Cole Hocker was second in 13:00.05 and Wolfe clung on for third in 13:00.13.

The 5000m is something of a warm-up event for the 1500m on Sunday night, which will see hostilities resume between rivals Ingebrigtsen and Hocker as well as Commonwealth Games champion and new mile world record holder Josh Kerr.

Ingebrigtsen clashed again with Hocker a week after the Norwegian called his opponents “cowards” and “losers” for their performances in the Diamond League Final.

The American installed his own pacemaker only to hang back as the race began, with Ingebrigtsen frustrated at having to front-run before fading to fourth.

He later apologised for his comments but doubled down on the sentiment. He explained: “They told the other athletes and the organisers that they were targeting a specific pace and were bringing in their own pacemaker to set that pace, but then they did something completely different.

“When you promise the crowd a fast race, you have a responsibility to follow through – at least in my view. This isn’t about me losing. I wasn’t good enough. It’s about taking responsibility for the commitments you’ve made to the meeting organisers, the crowd and your competitors.”
