Shakur Stevenson sums up Teofimo Lopez’s ability following one-sided win

Shakur Stevenson overcame Teofimo Lopez with relative ease at the weekend and the newly crowned WBO super-lightweight king has summarised his thoughts on Lopez’s ability.

Stevenson coasted to a unanimous 119-109 victory on all three scorecards, winning every round except the eighth on each of those cards, with his superior skills there for all to see, despite many fans believing that Lopez would provide him with a stern test.

It now seems as though Stevenson will either return to lightweight in search of title unifications or move up to welterweight for a lucrative showdown with Conor Benn, meaning his reign in the 140lb division will likely end without a title defence.

As for Lopez, he too is eyeing up a move to the 147lb scene as he plans on becoming a three-division world champion, but with each of his last five super-lightweight victories coming via decision, there are doubts as to whether he has the power to succeed at a higher weight.

In an interview with Ring Magazine, Stevenson assessed the quality of Lopez after facing him and gave credit to his rival, admitting that the 28-year-old has both power and speed.

“He is a tough fighter, he got power too, speed too.”

Stevenson followed up that praise on social media after rewatching the action.

According to Compubox, Lopez landed just 15% (72/468) of his punches in the fight, but almost 80% of those scoring shots were power punches (56).

Still, Lopez will need to ensure that those blows prove more consequential against larger opposition than they did against Stevenson, with punch power being the obvious hurdle to conquering a third division.
