Six players Man United could sell on deadline day to fund last-gasp signing

Need to know
Deadline day has arrived and Manchester United could sanction some outgoings in order to trim down Michael Carrick’s squad and maybe even target a big name
Everything you need to know about players Manchester United could offload on deadline day
- The winter transfer window will soon close and while it is likely that Manchester United will stay quiet on deadline day, they could, in theory, look to sell some stars. These sales could perhaps spark a last-minute superstar signing and we bring you a handful of potential sales.
- Harry Maguire: With his contract expiring this summer, the club could be eager to secure a fee rather than losing the veteran defender for nothing in June. He has fallen behind younger talents like Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven in the defensive rotation.
- Joshua Zirkzee: Despite his technical ability, the forward has struggled for consistent game time. Selling him now allows United to recoup their initial investment and free up space for Benjamin Šeško and Matheus Cunha.
- Manuel Ugarte: Having struggled to secure a regular starting spot under Carrick’s new tactical structure, the midfielder is a candidate for a late move and has tentatively been linked with a move to Dutch giants Ajax. His departure would provide the financial flexibility needed to target more mobile, technical pivots that suit the current interim manager’s vision.
- Altay Bayindir: Following the signing of Senne Lammens, the Turkish goalkeeper is now surplus to requirements. A permanent move back to the Super Lig could be ideal.
- Tyrell Malacia: The left-back has struggled to reclaim a starting position following his long-term recovery. A deadline-day sale would help the club balance the books.
- Mason Mount: Despite his versatility, Mount has failed to justify his high salary with consistent output and could be offloaded to generate significant FFP headroom. A late move would allow the club to pivot toward younger midfield profiles who better complement Kobbie Mainoo.
- Any sales would allow United to spend and one player they could poach would be Crystal Palace star Adam Wharton. His club have remained firm on a valuation between £85m and £100m, reflecting his long-term contract and status as one of England’s premier young playmakers.
- Wharton is the ideal technical fit for Carrick’s system, offering elite ball retention and the composure to dictate play from a deep-lying role. His exceptional passing range would provide the perfect platform for Mainoo to flourish in a more advanced, creative position.
