South Carolina’s Staley, UConn’s Auriemma chat after skirmish
COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolina women’s basketball coach Dawn Staley says it is time to move past her Final Four skirmish with UConn coach Geno Auriemma that became the talk of the tournament.
Staley released a statement on South Carolina’s X account on Tuesday in which she expressed her respect for Auriemma and said the two have spoken since South Carolina’s 62-48 victory on Friday night. The season ended with UCLA’s runaway 79-51 win over South Carolina in Sunday’s national championship game.
“With the college women’s basketball season behind us, it’s time to move forward and close the chapter on how our semifinal game with UConn ended,” Staley wrote in her statement. “I spoke with Geno and I want to be clear — I have a great deal of respect for him and what he’s meant to the game. One moment doesn’t define a career and it doesn’t change the impact he’s had on growing women’s basketball.
“The standard at UConn is what it is because of him, and that’s something this game has benefited from. So I’m asking everyone to turn the page. Let’s refocus on what matters most, continuing to elevate our game, creating opportunities and pushing it forward. That’s always been my mission, and it’s not changing.”
Staley’s statement followed Auriemma’s apology on Saturday after he went over to Staley in the final seconds of Friday night’s game and appeared to chastise her. Coaches from both teams had to separate them. When the game finally ended, Auriemma walked off the court to the locker room without going back to shake hands with anyone from South Carolina.
“There’s no excuse for how I handled the end of the game vs. South Carolina,” Auriemma said in his statement on Saturday.
“It’s unlike what I do and what our standard is here at Connecticut. I want to apologize to the staff and the team at South Carolina. It was uncalled for in how I reacted. The story should be how well South Carolina played, and I don’t want my actions to detract from that. I’ve had a great relationship with their staff, and I sincerely want to apologize to them.”

2026 Cadillac Championship predictions, picks, odds for PGA Tour’s return to Miami
A venue that was a staple on the PGA Tour for a decade has since seen a decade pass since it last hosted a tournament on the circuit. That drought will come to an end this week, however, as the PGA Tour makes its return to the Blue Monster at Trump National Doral for the 2026 Cadillac Championship.
A new signature event on the PGA Tour schedule, the Cadillac Championship will see most — not all — of the best players on the PGA Tour tee it up on the par 72 that stretches to nearly a whopping 7,800 yards. Rory McIlroy, Xander Schauffele, Ludvig Åberg and Matt Fitzpatrick are among the notables not in the field as they keep one eye on next week’s signature event, the Truist Championship at Quail Hollow, and the other on the PGA Championship at Aronimink in two weeks’ time.
In their place, world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler returns to competition following his playoff loss to Fitzpatrick at the most recent signature event, the RBC Heritage. A runner-up finisher in his two most recent starts, Scheffler is starting to find his groove at an eerily similar time that he did in 2025 when he won in his final start before the PGA Championship (which he also won).
Scheffler could continue a run of champions at Doral that were (or ultimately became) champions at another golf course: Augusta National. Adam Scott, Dustin Johnson, Patrick Reed and Tiger Woods were the last four winners of the WGC-Cadillac Championship.
Alex Fitzpatrick makes his debut as a member of the PGA Tour following his win with Matt at the Zurich Classic with fellow Europeans Tommy Fleetwood, Rose, Viktor Hovland, Shane Lowry, Sepp Straka and Alex Noren all teeing it up.
Collin Morikawa took a week off after two strong starts in spite of a not so strong back and rounds out a field that includes Russell Henley, Hideki Matsuyama, Sam Burns and Chris Gotterup.
2026 Cadillac Championship schedule
Dates: April 30 – May 3
Location: Trump National Doral (Blue Monster) — Miami
Par: 72 | Yardage: 7,739 | Architect: Dick Wilson & Robert von Hagge
Purse: $20 million
2026 Cadillac Championship odds
Odds via FanDuel Sportsbook
- Scottie Scheffler (+310): Despite some wanting more out of Scheffler, the world No. 1 is ahead of schedule compared to last season with a win already under his belt. In this field, he ranks No. 1 in total strokes gained, strokes gained tee to green and strokes gained around the green as his ball striking continues to trend in the right direction. On a golf course that will require execution and patience, Scheffler has both in spades. The driver has settled into a very comfortable spot the last two tournaments and will bleed into his iron play soon enough setting up a performance that will remind the world he is by far the best. That could very well come this week.
- Cameron Young (13-1)
- Collin Morikawa (22-1): The two-time major champion showed some chops the last couple of weeks as he battled to top 10 finishes at the Masters and RBC Heritage without a clean bill of health. If the week off brings certainty in his back and in his health, Morikawa will relish in the return to Doral given his proficiency with his long irons. He ranks No. 1 in this field in strokes gained approach in 2026.
- Tommy Fleetwood (25-1)
- Russell Henley (25-1)
- Sam Burns (27-1)
- Chris Gotterup (30-1): It is not like he has fallen off that much since his two wins early in the season. Gotterup nabbed a top 10 at the big ballpark that is Memorial Park before a top-25 finish in his Masters debut. He continued to flash brilliance at Harbour Town only to be undone by his short game. Everything is there for him to pick up win No. 3 this week, it will just be a matter of stringing four rounds together.
- Patrick Cantlay (30-1)
- Adam Scott (33-1): The last winner on the PGA Tour at Doral was … Bueller? Bueller? Ding, ding, ding. Mr. Scott. The Australian was 10 years younger when he conquered the Blue Monster, but his game continues to look more and more of that of a young man. Sufficiently long off the tee with continued speed gains with the driver, Scott has seen his iron play take the next step in 2026. He is top 10 in driving distance, strokes gained tee to green and strokes gained approach — that will play at this golf course.
- Justin Rose (33-1): It is not the first time Rose has made a head-scratching equipment move, but it is the first time he has done so in his mid 40s. The Englishman is now a member of the McLaren golf (?) team (not F1, although that would be a sight) and he will debut his new set of irons this week in Miami. We’ll see what that brings as he is currently enjoying the second-best approach season of his career behind just 2013 when he won the U.S. Open.
- Maverick McNealy (33-1)
- Hideki Matsuyama (33-1)

Teddy Atlas sums up Junto Nakatani’s chances of becoming the first to beat Naoya Inoue
Teddy Atlas has assessed Junto Nakatani’s chances as he attempts to dethrone undisputed super-bantamweight king Naoya Inoue this Saturday.
The pair will square off at the Tokyo Dome, Japan, where Inoue overcame a shock knockdown to successfully defend his four world titles against Luis Nery in 2024.
Since then, ‘The Monster’ has made five consecutive defences of his undisputed crown at 122lbs, including an eighth-round finish over Ramon Cardenas last year.
Again, Inoue was compelled to climb off the canvas and cement his stoppage victory, but did so with tremendous composure and intelligence.
The 33-year-old then experienced far less resistance in his last outing against David Picasso, comfortably outpointing the previously unbeaten Mexican in December.
Nakatani, on the other hand, was introduced to a hard-fought encounter on the same card, resulting in a debatable unanimous decision victory over Sebastian Hernandez.
Prior to that, ‘Big Bang’ had become a three-division world champion while never really needing to display such resolve.
It could, therefore, either work to his advantage or detriment that the 28-year-old came through a torrid battle with Hernandez just over five months before facing Inoue.
Assessing the situation on his YouTube channel, Atlas gives the challenger a genuine chance but questions whether even the best version of Nakatani can defeat Inoue, a consensus top two pound-for-pound star.
“Listen, Inoue’s a big [betting] favourite … I think Nakatani’s a live dog. You have to like Inoue, it’s hard to go against him.
“This fight will come down to geography. Who fights at the range, the distance, the location that better-suits them for their talent?
“Inoue wants to be close; Nakatani wants to be [fighting] at a distance. And he’s a southpaw. He wants to make it hard for Inoue to make ground.
“Nakatani took a lot of punishment [against Hernandez]. Has he had enough time to recover? He went in that ring and came out of it with probably a little less of himself.
“At 28, he’s young enough to handle that – youth can do amazing things. I give Nakatani a shot.”
From a psychological perspective, Atlas believes that Nakatani has only benefited from his fight with Hernandez.
Whether his body has been given sufficient time to recover, though, is another matter entirely.

John Stones Announces Decision to Leave Manchester City
England defender John Stones has said he has achieved all his dreams at Manchester City after confirming he will leave the club at the end of the season.
The 31-year-old, whose contract expires this summer, has played 293 matches since joining from Everton in 2016 for £47.5 million.
During his time at City, Stones won six Premier League titles, the UEFA Champions League, two FA Cups, five League Cups, three Community Shields, the FIFA Club World Cup and the UEFA Super Cup.
In an emotional message on social media, Stones said Manchester City has been his home for the past 10 years and will always remain special to him. He explained that he arrived as a young player and is now leaving as a more mature man, having built a family and enjoyed a successful career on the pitch.
He added that he achieved everything he hoped for at the club and never imagined he would reach such a level of success or build such strong relationships with teammates and fans.
Stones also praised manager Pep Guardiola, saying he is grateful for the opportunity to work with him and believes his success would not have been possible without the Spaniard.
The defender was Guardiola’s second signing at the club and was, at the time, one of the most expensive defenders in the world.
He is one of several long-serving players to leave the Etihad, following the departures of Kevin De Bruyne, Kyle Walker and Ederson last summer. Club captain Bernardo Silva is also expected to leave soon.
Despite struggling with injuries in recent seasons, Stones remains a fan favourite. He scored 19 goals for the club, including an important equaliser against Arsenal in 2024, and produced a famous goal-line clearance against Liverpool during the 2018–19 title race.
One of his standout moments came in 2023 when he played in midfield as City defeated Inter Milan to win the Champions League and complete a historic treble.
However, injuries have affected his consistency. He has made only 16 appearances this season and has missed many matches over the years due to fitness problems.
Manager Guardiola recently said Stones remains a top defender when fully fit but admitted injuries have limited his impact.
As he prepares to leave, Stones could soon decide his next move, with reports linking him to Barcelona, while Everton and Coventry City are also said to be interested.

PM Narendra Modi Inaugurates Six BCCI Indoor Cricket Academies Across North-East India
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday inaugurated six state-of-the-art indoor cricket academies across northeast India, which are part of the BCCI’s expansion programme for cricketing infrastructure in the region. The academies are located in Rangpo (Sikkim), Doimukh (Arunachal Pradesh), Imphal (Manipur), Madankurklang (Meghalaya), Aizawl (Mizoram), and Dimapur (Nagaland). “The Honourable Prime Minister virtually inaugurated the facilities during a state function in Gangtok, Sikkim, marking a significant step towards strengthening sports infrastructure and unlocking the immense sporting potential of the North-East region,” the BCCI stated in a release.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by ICC chairman Jay Shah along with all the office bearers of BCCI while administrators from the other five northeastern states joined via video conference.
“This project was conceptualised and driven by the BCCI under the leadership of Jay Shah during his tenure as Secretary, with a clear focus on strengthening cricketing ecosystems in emerging regions,” the BCCI said.
“The foundation stone for these academies was laid by Shah in May 2024, setting in motion a structured effort to build world-class cricketing infrastructure in the North-East.” The academies have been designed as high-performance centres, equipped with indoor practice pitches, high-tech gymnasiums, temperature-controlled swimming pools, and dedicated administrative and training blocks.
These facilities will enable year-round training, particularly addressing the challenges posed by extended monsoon seasons in the region, and significantly reduce the need for players to travel to other parts of the country for professional training.
BCCI president Mithun Manhas said: “This initiative reflects a clear intent to take cricket infrastructure to every region and build a stronger, more inclusive foundation for the game.
“It is also a significant step in ensuring that aspiring cricketers from the North-East have access to the same quality of facilities as anywhere else in the country.” “I am confident that this will pave the way for more players from the North-East to progress to the highest levels of the game,” added secretary Devajit Saikia said.
On his part, vice-president Rajeev Shukla said: “The focus now will be on creating competitive exposure and pathways that allow this talent to flourish at the highest level.”

Phillies fire Rob Thomson, name Don Mattingly interim manager
The team has fired Canadian Rob Thomson and named bench coach Don Mattingly as interim manager, the Phillies announced Tuesday.
Mattingly previously worked on the staff of Toronto Blue Jays manager John Schneider.
Thomson, of Sarnia, Ont., led Philadelphia to the 2022 World Series after taking over for Joe Girardi, losing to the Houston Astros in six games. Since then, the club has regressed in the post-season. It lost in the NL Championship Series in 2023 in seven games, and the NL Division Series in 2024 and ’25 in four games.
The Phillies have struggled mightily this season, sitting tied for last in the NL East at 9-19 and having lost 11 of their past 12 games, including five of six against the division-rival Atlanta Braves.
Mattingly, 65, spent three years with the Blue Jays, reaching the first World Series of his fabled MLB career last season.
After initially saying he stepped away to spend time with family, Mattingly joined the Phillies in January, where son Preston is the general manager under president Dave Dombrowski.
Over a 14-year playing career with the New York Yankees, Don Mattingly was a six-time all-star. He later served as manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Miami Marlins for a combined 12 seasons.

Smriti Mandhana Down To 5th, Deepti Sharma Rises To 4th In ICC’s Latest Women’s T20I Rankings
File photo of Smriti Mandhana© PTI
India vice-captain Smriti Mandhana slipped one place to fifth in the batters’ list, while all-rounder Deepti Sharma climbed to fourth among bowlers in the latest ICC Women’s T20I Rankings released on Tuesday. Other significant movements on the batters’ list include India captain Harmanpreet Kaur, who has moved up a slot to re-enter the top 10 with 646 points after finishing the recent series against South Africa with 169 runs and Richa Gosh, who advanced two slots to 22nd. South Africa captain, Laura Wolvaardt has advanced two slots to third place and career-best rating points of 786 and is now just two rating points behind number two, Beth Mooney and 29 behind Georgia Voll who tops the Batting Rankings with 815 points.
Wolvaardt smashed an unbeaten, 56-ball 92 to finish the five-match series with a total of 330 runs – the most individual runs in a women’s bilateral T20I series – as her team won the series 4-1.
It’s a tight race at the top of the rankings for T20I bowlers that is still headed by Pakistan spinner Sadia Iqbal, with India all-rounder Deepti and South Africa spinner Nonkululeko Mlaba (up two rungs) sharing fourth spot ahead of the T20 World Cup.
Just outside the top 10 there is a new career-high rating for India youngster Shree Charani, with the left-armer gaining 12 places to rise to 11th following her two-wicket haul in the series finale against the Proteas in Benoni.
There are also some changes on the latest ODI rankings following the completion of Bangladesh’s home series with Sri Lanka and it’s a number of players from the home side that climbed the updated charts.
Experienced Bangladesh duo Nigar Sultana (up three spots to 35th) and Sobhana Mostary (up five rungs to 45th) made gains on the list for ODI batters, while Nahida Akter (up two slots to 11th) and Marufa Akter (up six places to 37th) were the big improvers on the updated rankings for ODI bowlers.
Sri Lanka captain Chamari Athapaththu jumped one place to ninth on the updated rankings for ODI all-rounders and seven spots to equal 34th for ODI bowlers, while teammate Harshitha Samarawickrama (up three spots to equal 20th) is the eye-catcher from the island nation on the list for ODI batters.

IPL 2026: PBKS unleash Lockie Ferguson as pace weapon; RR opt to bowl | Cricket News
NEW DELHI: League leaders Punjab Kings handed a major boost to their bowling attack with the inclusion of Lockie Ferguson as they took on Rajasthan Royals in a crucial Indian Premier League 2026 clash on Tuesday.Rajasthan skipper Riyan Parag won the toss and opted to bowl first at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium, citing early moisture due to recent rain and cloud cover.
Ferguson boost for unbeaten Punjab
All eyes were on Punjab’s team sheet as the hosts brought in express pacer Ferguson in place of Xavier Bartlett, signalling a clear intent to sharpen their pace attack. The New Zealand quick’s raw speed is expected to play a key role, especially under conditions that could assist seamers early on.Punjab also made a forced change, with Suryansh Shedge replacing Shashank Singh in the XI.Captain Shreyas Iyer admitted he would have preferred to bowl first but remained confident in his side’s adaptability. “Any time you bat or bowl, it’s a great challenge. All of us are proactive irrespective of the toss,” he said.Speaking about consistency, Iyer added, “We have a certain goal to achieve and we know the eventual goal. Our mindset is about maintaining standards and values. It’s been brilliant so far, and we need to keep the momentum going.”Punjab head into the contest as the only unbeaten side this season and will be keen to consolidate their position at the top of the table.
Royals look to exploit early conditions
For Rajasthan, Parag emphasised the importance of making early inroads. “There’s a little moisture at the start, so we’re trying to extract that and get a few early wickets,” he said. The Royals made two changes of their own, bringing in Dasun Shanaka for Shimron Hetmyer and Yash Punja in place of Ravi Bishnoi.Currently placed fourth, Rajasthan have a chance to climb higher with a win, but they face a confident Punjab unit riding a wave of momentum. With Ferguson’s pace added to an already potent attack featuring Arshdeep Singh and Marco Jansen, Punjab will look to make early breakthroughs and extend their dominant run in IPL 2026.

Top Remaining Veterans Teams Should Target After NFL Draft
Dust settled on free agency weeks ago, but the talent pool wasn’t entirely drained.
Dallas found another receiver post-draft, agreeing to terms on a one-year deal with Marquez Valdes-Scantling on Monday, in a sign of life left in veteran free agency. “MVS” had 14 receptions and one touchdown last season. That’s not exactly the kind of production that brings teams knocking on your door in March.
But in Dallas, he was targeted to fill a clearly defined role that might include holdout insurance should negotiations with George Pickens shift from cordial to contentious as owner Jerry Jones’ history with holdouts suggests.
Here are a few other veterans capable of filling a role, big or small, despite their known shortcomings:
QB Aaron Rodgers
Week 1 Age: 42
Last season: 24 TDs, led Steelers to AFC North division title
Rodgers and Mike McCarthy are both wearing the knowing smirk we read as an almost obvious sign of the pending reunion of former Packers in Pittsburgh. Rodgers can still get the job done — he had only seven interceptions with a very modest skill-position group in 2025 — and starred in this system in his physical prime. Who else is bidding? Barring injury, most teams are not likely interest in the Rodgers Rodeo. Father Time can wipe away those facial expressions quickly, and Rodgers’ next IR trip if likely his last.
WR Deebo Samuel
Week 1 Age: 30
Last season: 72 receptions for 727 yards, five TD receptions with Commanders
Samuel’s lone season with the Commanders was a struggle and it’s hard to know how much of it was the revolving door at quarterback, a new offense, friction with jettisoned offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury or the physical toll of playing wide receiver like a running back. He has 406 career catches and could still hold down a role in the right scheme.
DE Joey Bosa
Week 1 Age: 31
Last season: Led NFL with five forced fumbles; had 16 QB hits in 16 games
Bosa had 54 pressures in his only season with the Bills, which is enough for a team to think about taking a flier on the longtime Chargers’ edge rusher. He had 5.0 sacks and would make sense for a handful of contenders, including the San Francisco 49ers, where little brother Nick Bosa wouldn’t mind the help. San Francisco’s abysmal pass rush to end last season was sans Nick Bosa because of a season-ending ACL injury, and didn’t get a lot of attention in the offseason.
Week 1 Age: 28 Harris isn’t to the magical downhill decline age for running backs but there’s no denying his mileage is high, making the return from a season-ending injury last September far larger than a footnote to his 2026 status. But the 21st pick in the 2021 draft had four 1,000-yard seasons in a row, 28 rushing TDs and never missed a game in four previous seasons with the Steelers before his wheels gave him issues with the Chargers last season.
Week 1 Age: 33 Diggs is dealing with a legal headache and won’t be considered for sainthood as a teammate, which might have something to do with him playing for the Vikings, Bills, Texans and Patriots since 2019. A disappearing act in the playoffs won’t help his cause. Diggs had 14 receptions in four games but averaged 7.9 yards per catch and his inability to consistently separate was a problem. His longest playoff catch of 13 receptions before the contested, acrobatic grab in the Super Bowl was 14 yards.
RB Najee Harris
Last season: 15 carries, 61 yards, season-ending Achilles injury Sept. 21 vs. Broncos
WR Stefon Diggs
Last season: 85 receptions, 1,013 yards with PatriotsOct 5, 2025; Orchard Park, New York, USA; New England Patriots wide receiver Stefon Diggs (8) protects the ball from Buffalo Bills cornerback Taron Johnson (7) after making a catch in the fourth quarter at Highmark Stadium. Hockey Canada denies OHL exceptional status for top prospect Kade O’Rourke
Kade O’Rourke will have to wait for his OHL debut.
Hockey Canada denied exceptional status to the potential No. 1 pick in the upcoming draft, Sportsnet can confirm.
O’Rourke, a 15-year-old from Texas, would have become the first pure-born American player to receive exceptional status in the OHL. Sean Day was a dual citizen of Canada and the United States when he received his exceptional status in 2013.
“A number of people I spoke to this week said there is no question he’s ready,” Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman said of O’Rourke earlier in April.
Now, he will have to hold for the 2027 draft to enter into the junior hockey league.
O’Rourke moved to Toronto to play in the Greater Toronto Hockey League four years ago at the age of 11.
This season, he led the Toronto Jr. Canadiens to the OHL Cup final, but they fell in the final to the Detroit HoneyBaked.
O’Rourke scored 10 points in the tournament, including a sensational goal in the semifinals. He was also named a tournament all-star.
The Oshawa Generals hold the top pick in the OHL draft, set for June 12.
Along with Day, John Tavares (2005), Aaron Ekblad (2011), Connor McDavid (2012), Shane Wright (2019) and Michael Misa (2022) are the other players who were granted exceptional status in the OHL.
