The Vikings Have a Few Schedule Nightmares Afoot
Sportsbooks believe the 2026 Minnesota Vikings will finish around 8-9 or 9-8 this season, a familiar win forecast that seems to follow (haunt?) Minnesota every spring. Now, we know who Minnesota will play and when, thanks to the league’s schedule release on Thursday night. This article illuminates the nasty portions.
A few trouble spots jumped off the page immediately.
Ranked in ascending order, these are those gruesome spots (No. 1 = worst schedule aspect).
The Nasty Stretch Arrives before December
What stands out to you on the Vikings’ schedule?
4. The Early Bye Week
Nobody enjoys an early bye week, but some NFL teams just have to stomach them. Most believe the best byes are down the stretch of the regular season, perhaps in late November or early December, when a team ramps up to the final push for the postseason.
Instead, the Vikings will get one of the earliest byes possible. They’ll play five games and then reset just as the first chapter of the season ended.
Thankfully, the club has a “mini-bye” after Thursday Night Football at the New England Patriots in December — 10 days of rest.
3. Two Evil — and Good — Rivals to Kick the Whole Thing Off
The Vikings have started a season against the Green Bay Packers and Chicago Bears in a row (or vice versa) just once in franchise history — 2003 when Minnesota won both contests.
It’s rare, but the NFL has outfitted Minnesota’s schedule with two games against its foremost foes right away. In seasons past — mainly when the Bears weren’t very good — this would be a nothingburger. Now, though, both the Packers and Bears could reasonably win the NFC North. They’re decent-to-good squads on paper.
Minnesota could’ve eased into the 2026 regular season with a Week 1 or 2 game against the Miami Dolphins or New York Jets. Nope — it’s the in-your-face main enemies for Kyler Murray to acclimate to the franchise immediately.
SI.com‘s Jonathan Harrison on Vikings-Packers in Week 1: “The game will be the first chance for the Vikings to likely see former Cardinals QB Kyler Murray man the Vikings’ offense. Murray was signed to a one-year, veteran minimum deal in March following his release from Arizona. The Vikings’ coaching staff and front office have been adamant they see Murray in a “true competition” with J.J. McCarthy for the team’s starting quarterback role.”
“As for the Packers, they will likely be without star pass rusher Micah Parsons for the first several weeks of the 2026 season. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Thursday, Parsons is a “candidate to be placed on the Physically Unable to Perform List” to start the season. Parsons tore his ACL in December and is currently recovering from the injury.”
2. Always Thursday Night Football on the Road
Once again, the NFL has lined up Minnesota to play on the road for Thursday Night Football. It’ll be the fourth straight occurrence.
In the last three seasons, these have been the outcomes:
TNF: Eagles def. Vikings | 34-28 | Week 2, 2023
TNF: Rams def. Vikings | 30-20 | Week 8, 2024
TNF: Chargers def. Vikings | 37-10 | Week 8, 2025
TNF: Vikings at Patriots | TBD | Week 14, 2026
This needs course correction. Starting next year — and then likely spanning a few seasons — Minnesota is overdue for home primetime Thursday Night Football games. That’s all there is to it.
Daily Norseman‘s Christopher Gates noted on TNF and the weather from the schedule, “The Thursday night trip to New England in early December might be a bit tricky, as could the penultimate game of the year against the Jets. Other than that, however, Mother Nature seems like it could be on the Vikings’ side this year.”
1. Weeks 8 thru 11
Finally, the part of the schedule where you close your eyes and pray to Norse Gods:
Week 8 — at Detroit Lions
Week 9 — vs. Buffalo Bills (MNF)
Week 10 — at Green Bay Packers
Week 11 — at San Francisco 49ers (SNF)
Unless injuries have decimated four teams consecutively, this will be a brutal stretch for Minnesota — or any team. For example, if you asked a member of each of those teams’ fan bases if that squad can win a Super Bowl in 2026, they would reply, “Yes.”
On top of that, three of the four contests are on the road. Ruthless.
For the Vikings’ season to feel optimistic, Kevin O’Connell’s team probably has to have a 4-2 record entering Week 8 at Detroit, because a 2-2 split against DET, BUF, GB, and SF would be considered a favorable outcome.

Rushing delivers dramatic 11th-inning walk-off as Dodgers edge Rockies
LOS ANGELES — Dalton Rushing singled in the winning run against a drawn-in infield in the 11th inning, rallying the Dodgers to an 8-7 win over the Colorado Rockies on Monday night in Los Angeles’ first extra-innings game of the season.
The Dodgers improved to 60-32, the first team in the majors this season with 60 wins. They were the only team in the majors not to have played extras. It was also their first extra-inning game since Game 7 of last year’s World Series, when they beat Toronto for their second straight championship.
Teoscar Hernández started the bottom of the 11th at second base. Max Muncy was intentionally walked by Jimmy Herget (0-3). Pinch-hitter Tommy Edman’s sacrifice bunt moved Hernández to third and he scored on Rushing’s third hit of the game.
The Dodgers tied the game 7-7 in the 10th. Andy Pages started the inning at second and took third on Freeman’s groundout to first off Brennan Bernardino. Pages scored on second baseman Edouard Julien’s fielding error of Mookie Betts. Betts took second on Tucker’s single before Hernández lined into an inning-ending double play, with Tucker doubled off first.
Jake McCarthy’s groundout to first base gave the Rockies a 7-6 lead in the 10th.
Cole Carrigg began the inning at second base and took third on Tyler Freeman’s sacrifice bunt off Dodgers reliever Edgardo Henriquez (3-0). McCarthy grounded to first and Freddie Freeman stepped on the bag and fired to the plate, where Carrigg scored under the tag of Rushing.
There appeared to be heated words exchanged. Both dugouts emptied and both bullpens came part of the way onto the field. Muncy ran in to move Rushing away from the mound before calm was restored.
The Rockies tied the game 6-all in the ninth. Kyle Karros had an RBI double off Dodgers closer Tanner Scott. Carrigg’s two-run double to deep center with the bases loaded scored the tying runs. Brett Sullivan, who pinch ran for Karros, also was called safe at the plate, which would have been the go-ahead run, but the Dodgers challenged the call.
They got the call overturned and then Rockies challenged a different aspect of the play, claiming Rushing had violated the blocking the plate rule. But Colorado lost the challenge, forcing extra innings tied 6-6.
Shohei Ohtani drove in four runs, highlighted by his 299th career homer.
Rockies RHP Michael Lorenzen (3-9, 6.91 ERA) starts Tuesday against Dodgers RHP Justin Wrobleski (10-2, 2.80).

2024 NFL redraft proves recency bias against Jayden Daniels
The 2026 NFL Draft is long over. Free agency is in the rearview mirror, and so is the NFL offseason. Now, we await training camp, with every NFL team scheduled to report in the next few weeks.
In the meantime, there isn’t much going on around the NFL. Well, unless you’re following the Brandon Aiyuk drama, which seems to have new material every other day.
While we are in the calm before the storm, Zachary Pereles of CBS Sports recently looked back at the 2024 NFL Draft. Specifically, Pereles performed a “2024 redraft.” That is the draft where six quarterbacks were selected among the first 12 picks.
It’s still early, but it looks like four of those quarterback picks were home runs: No. 1 Caleb Williams (Bears), No. 2 Jayden Daniels (Commanders), No. 3 Drake Maye (Patriots) and No. 12 Bo Nix (Broncos). Daniels and Nix were the top rookies, with Daniels having arguably the greatest rookie season in NFL history, leading the Commanders to the NFC Championship Game.
Daniels battled injuries last season, missing 10 games. However, Maye and Williams took a big leap, with both leading their respective teams to the playoffs. Maye even led New England to the Super Bowl. Nix led the Broncos to the AFC’s No. 1 seed, but was injured in the AFC Divisional Round.
So, where would these players land in this CBS redraft?
Here’s Pereles’ top-three picks:
-
3. New England Patriots: Jayden Daniels
Pereles offered the following on Washington selecting Williams:
The Commanders would gladly “settle” for Williams here. He took his game to another level last year by cutting way down on negative plays — especially sacks — and improving massively as a pocket navigator and scrambler. This is his biggest advantage over Maye, who still must improve his pressure mitigation. Williams has always taken excellent care of the ball as a passer, even during his difficult rookie year, and his out-of-structure creation is jaw-dropping.
Here’s his assessment of Daniels going No. 3:
If this article had come at this time out last year, Daniels would likely be No. 1. Instead, he falls all the way to No. 3! (Please note extreme sarcasm here; all three of these guys are great.) Daniels’ electrifying rookie season can’t be forgotten, but his second-year struggles — with injuries, a fall off in accuracy and less-than-ideal surroundings — can’t be completely overlooked, either.
If Washington had the chance to do this over, it would take Daniels again. I’m pretty confident the Bears would also stick with Williams. This redraft is proof of how our world is full of “what have you done for me lately?” Daniels is somehow viewed as No. 3 in this class because last season has him on a mission in 2026. He’s already said he’s done talking about 2025.
Let’s talk about last season’s playoffs. The Patriots made it to the Super Bowl despite Maye. He struggled in all four games, completing 58% of his passes with six touchdowns, four interceptions, and seven fumbles. He had an 82.2 QB rating and a 40 QBR.
Meanwhile, Williams completed 52% of his passes, with four touchdowns and five interceptions. He had a 65.9 QB rating and a 53.4 QBR.
While Daniels didn’t make the playoffs last season, let’s revisit his 2024 playoff run. He completed 66% of his passes in three playoff games, with 822 yards, five touchdowns and one interception. He led the game-winning drive on the road at Tampa Bay in the NFC Wild-Card Round, and led the Commanders to a blowout road win over No. 1 seed Detroit in the NFC Divisional Round. Daniels had a 97.9 QB rating and an 84.2 QBR. He also rushed for 135 yards and one touchdown.
All QB-needy teams in the NFL would be happy with any of these three young franchise passers. But the Commanders still believe they’ve got the best of the bunch.

Cristiano Ronaldo exits World Cup as Mikel Merino sends Spain through
Will Cain: President Trump pulled a Trump card on a red card
Will Cain enthusiastically discusses FIFA’s decision to overturn U.S. soccer star Folarin Balogun’s red card, allowing him to play. This decision, upheld after rejecting Belgium’s appeal, sparks outrage from the Royal Belgian Football Association. Cain frames the match as the U.S. versus “the world,” highlighting the controversy.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s time representing Portugal at the FIFA World Cup may have come to an end in Dallas on Monday afternoon, as Spain advanced to the quarterfinals, 1-0, at their expense.
Mikel Merino came off Spain’s bench and electrified the World Cup crowd in stoppage time during the second half when he finally broke the 0-0 tie for the decisive goal past Portuguese goalkeeper Diogo Costa.
Ronaldo, who never knocked on Spain’s doorstep in this match – no team has as they have yet to give up a goal in this tournament – stared into the crowd after a few desperation attempts weren’t good enough for Portugal as the final whistle rang out.

Ronaldo played in his fifth World Cup, and though there was some heated debate about whether he should be starting for this squad, he leaves perhaps his last tournament of his illustrious career with three more goals on this stage under his belt.
While Ronaldo and his Portuguese teammates think about what could’ve been, Spain will await the winner of Team USA and Belgium, which will play their Round of 16 match in Seattle on Monday night.

The big story out of the Pacific Northwest is Folarin Balogun, the USMNT star striker who will be available to play after his red card was changed to a suspension – a similar FIFA disciplinary action given to Ronaldo so that he could participate in this World Cup.
It’s been the talk of the tournament, as President Donald Trump said he called FIFA president Gianni Infantino to ask for a review of the controversial red card given in the Round of 32 matchup against Bosnia and Herzegovina. Ultimately, FIFA invoked Article 27 of its disciplinary code, much to the dislike of multiple soccer federations, including the Belgian group they are facing off against tonight.

The U.S. still took care of Bosnia and Herzegovina despite Balogun’s red card during the match, which had them down one man on the pitch compared to their opponent. Malik Tillman’s free kick goal was the nail in the coffin in the second half, as the USMNT moved on with a 2-0 victory and looked ahead to their meeting with Belgium.
FOX ONE’S NEW WORLD CUP VIEWING EXPERIENCE
Belgium almost didn’t make it out of the Round of 32, but almost doesn’t count in the World Cup. Senegal had been up 2-0 in the 80th minute of the match when Belgium finally came to life thanks to goals by Romelu Lukaku and Youri Tielemans in the 85th and 89th minutes, respectively.
It forced extra time and Senegal ultimately conceded a penalty kick with just ticks left on the clock before a penalty shootout would’ve determined who advanced in the tournament. Tielemans didn’t waste the opportunity, slamming the door on Senegal’s hopes in crushing fashion.

England dealt double injury blow ahead of crucial Fiji clash
England have suffered another double injury blow ahead of the crucial clash with Fiji to leave Steve Borthwick facing a backline selection headache.
Wing Cadan Murley has joined full-back George Furbank in being ruled out of the encounter at Everton’s Hill Dickinson Stadium, with the Harlequin suffering a shoulder injury during the defeat to South Africa.
Prop Beno Obano, who came off the bench against the Springboks, also drops out of the squad due to injury, with Northampton’s Emmanuel Iyogun taking his place.
Back five forward Chandler Cunningham-South has also been called up to Borthwick’s group. Wing Tom Roebuck came into camp on Monday as a replacement for Furbank.
England are now on a five-match losing run and face a potentially defining encounter with the Pacific Islanders on Saturday afternoon as Borthwick looks to relieve some of the pressure he and his side are under.
The England head coach is thought to be mulling possible debuts for teenage wing Noah Caluori and South African-born centre Benhard Janse van Rensburg, who becomes available on residency this week.
Freddie Steward is thought to be a doubt for the Nations Championship fixture after rolling his ankle in training in Johannesburg last week.

Mike Phillips a silver lining for Gilas in loss to Australia
FILE–Gilas Pilipinas’ Mike Phillips during a game against New Zealand in the Fiba World Cup Asian Qualifiers.–FIBA PHOTO
MANILA, Philippines—There weren’t a lot of positive takeaways in Gilas Pilipinas’ lopsided loss to Australia in the 2027 Fiba World Cup Asian Qualifiers.
But there was an obvious one that coach Tim Cone couldn’t help but rave about.
Mike Phillips earned the moniker “Motor Mike” while helping La Salle win a pair of UAAP championships. Cone and Gilas saw firsthand why.
READ: Gilas ‘kind of lost heart’ in 2nd half vs Australia, says Cone
“His nickname is ‘Motor Mike’ and there’s a reason for that,” Cone said after their 92-49 loss to the Boomers on Monday night in Perth. “He plays with such a tremendous motor and he’s all over the floor.”
“He was one of the bright lights for us tonight. He was doing great, especially in the first half. He was rebounding the heck out of the ball.”
The 6-foot-8 Phillips hauled down a game-high 14 rebounds against a rugged Australian side. He also chipped in six points, highlighted by a pair of emphatic dunks.
Unfortunately for Gilas and Phillips, the athletic forward couldn’t finish the game due to cramps.

“He got hurt in one of our friendlies coming to this game, so he’s playing with a gimpy ankle, and then he got hit by cramps late in the game, so we couldn’t keep him on the floor.”
Even with a forgettable final window in the qualifiers where Gilas lost both their games to New Zealand and Australia, Phillips became a silver lining that fans can expect to see more in the next phase.
“I think that’s just something that our fans are going to really appreciate as we move forward, watching him play with that kind of effort, and then watching the other guys get infected by it and continuing to play.”

‘I have not made or authorised any such statement’: Suryakumar Yadav breaks silence on viral fake quote | Cricket News
NEW DELHI: Former India T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav has strongly dismissed a fake statement circulating on social media, urging fans not to fall for misinformation while reiterating his unwavering support for the Indian team despite losing the T20I captaincy.Suryakumar, who led India to the T20 World Cup title before being replaced as captain by Shreyas Iyer and omitted from the squads for the UK tour and the Asian Games, took to X on Tuesday to deny the viral quote attributed to him.The fabricated statement claimed the Mumbai batter was unhappy over a lack of clarity about his future and felt he had not received the respect he deserved after his contributions to Indian cricket.
Suryakumar dismisses fake statement
Setting the record straight, Suryakumar categorically denied making any such remarks.“I’ve also noticed a statement being circulated online that has been falsely attributed to me. I want to make it clear that I have not made or authorised any such statement. Please don’t believe or share unverified information,” Suryakumar posted on X.The star batter also made it clear that there were no hard feelings despite the recent selection decisions.“I’m very happy for the team and wish them nothing but the very best, always. I know the boys are giving it their all, and they will always have my full support. My support for Indian cricket, my teammates, and the game will always speak louder than words falsely attributed to me,” he added, attempting to end the speculation surrounding his future. His clarification came a day after India’s selectors continued their transition plans by naming Shreyas Iyer as captain for the upcoming three-match T20I series against Zimbabwe, while Suryakumar was not included in the squad.
Special message for Vaibhav Sooryavanshi
Suryakumar also reserved special praise for teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who recently scripted history by becoming India’s youngest-ever international cricketer. The 15-year-old made his debut in the second T20I against England at just 15 years and 99 days, surpassing Sachin Tendulkar’s long-standing record.Congratulating the youngster, Suryakumar wrote: “A special word for Vaibhav – you’re at the start of what promises to be a very exciting journey. Enjoy every moment and keep making the country proud.”
Selectors continue youth-first approach
India’s squad for the Zimbabwe series reflected the selectors’ continued emphasis on building for the future.Young pacers Yash Thakur and Ashok Sharma earned maiden T20I call-ups following impressive IPL campaigns, while left-arm spinner Harsh Dubey also received his first T20I selection after recently making his ODI debut.Veteran wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson was another notable omission, with Prabhsimran Singh preferred behind the stumps after an impressive IPL season. Samson had already lost his place in the playing XI to Sooryavanshi during the ongoing England series following a string of low scores. The selectors also recalled Rinku Singh and express pacer Mayank Yadav, while Shivam Dube replaced the injured Nitish Kumar Reddy in India’s ODI squad for the upcoming England series.

WWE acquired Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide (AAA) before WrestleMania 41 in 2025 and the Mexican promotion’s growth over the last year may be one of the underrated stories in pro wrestling over the last 15 months.
AAA garnered a ton of attention with the buildup to its Mask vs. Mask match between El Grande Americano and Original El Grande Americano, Worlds Collide in June 2025 was a great way to introduce to re-introduce Lucha Libre to an American audience and TripleMania is going to be a two-night event for the first time in the company’s history.

“I think it’s the hottest program in the world right now. It’s unbelievable. They got incredible characters,” WWE Hall of Famer John Bradshaw Layfield told Fox News Digital in a recent interview.
He recalled working in Mexico early in his career and how incredible the energy was in the country when he would perform there.
“I’d go down there and work and people have thought since then if Lucha Libre ever takes off, as I’d always say this is a sleeping giant, I think what people are now starting to see what we’ve known all along about Lucha Libre is just fantastic. There’s Incredible characters. There’s incredible passion, especially with the Mexican fans. I’ve always enjoyed working down there. I always say you gotta work in a few arenas to make it in life. You gotta work at the Sportatorium, you gotta work at Staples Center, you gotta work at The Garden, you gotta work in Budokan, you gotta work in Earls Court – anywhere in Mexico is like that.

“It’s just unbelievable. The passion that the people have down there – I love it. And I just think that AAA has done an incredible job. Jeremy Borash, who is incredibly talented, Undertaker, who is a good friend of mine and also a very smart guy, I believe they’ve just done an incredible job with the product.”
Mask vs. Mask was one of the first major hits since the WWE acquisition was announced.
It saw El Grande Americano defeat Original El Grande Americano, who later revealed himself to be Chad Gable. The match had everything a pro wrestling fan could want – incredible characters, exciting buildup and one of the best matches of the year.
Bradshaw said there were two matches he’s seen in his career that he thought the men in the ring were doing a “different art form.” – Fit Finlay vs. Tony St. Clair in Europe and Shawn Michaels vs. The Undertaker at WrestleMania 25. He said the Mask vs. Mask match felt very much the same.
“I felt the same way with Mask vs. Mask. I never thought I’d see another match (like that),” Bradshaw said. “I was hoping I would but I don’t know if I’d ever see a match like I saw with Finlay and St. Clair and Undertaker and Shawn Michaels. I’d put that in that category. I just thought it was absolutely incredible. The passion, the emotion that went with it. Everything about it worked.”
Now, El Grande Americano has a new challenge – the revitalization of Los Perros del Mal.
The group recently reformed with Daga, Angel, Berto, Bronco Nima and Karmen Petrovic wreaking havoc on the AAA roster.
Bradshaw said he was looking forward to seeing where the new story goes.

“It just kills me with Los Perros del Mal. It’s kinda like in episodic television like in ‘The Walking Dead’ when the governor dies and it’s like, ‘What are you gonna do now?’ And then all of sudden you have a new villain,” he told Fox News Digital. “The first day of the next season and you go, ‘Oh great! This is awesome.’ I’m watching ‘Blacklist’ and as soon as they get rid of one villain you have another one comes in. … And you’re thinking what could top that?

“As soon as we got done with Mask vs. Mask, Jeremy Borash starts bringing back Los Perros del Mal – this incredible group. That visual of them there, I just thought, my God, man, this is awesome. Now we got something for, I don’t know how long, the next year or whatever long it is. But this is an incredible new journey it’s gonna look like for El Grande Americano.”

Strickland, however, said the solution was to avoid alcohol at all costs:
“Just don’t drink. It’s that easy.”

MLB roundup: Mets nip Braves in 11 to split 4-game series
Jul 6, 2026; Cumberland, Georgia, USA; New York Mets left fielder Juan Soto (22) celebrates hitting a home run against the Atlanta Braves during the ninth inning at Truist Park. Mandatory Credit: Jordan Godfree-Imagn Images Luis Torrens hit a tiebreaking two-out double in the 10th inning and the visiting New York Mets hung on to defeat the Atlanta Braves 7-6 on Monday and earn a split of their four-game series.
Torrens came through against Owen Murphy (0-1), who was making his major league debut, stroking a double just out of the reach of left fielder Jorge Mateo.
New York’s Brooks Raley (3-3) got the final out of the ninth. In the 10th, Luke Weaver allowed an RBI double to Michael Harris II and walked Matt Olson intentionally and Mateo unintentionally to load the bases, then induced Mauricio Dubon to hit into a fielder’s choice and end the game with his first save.
In a wild ninth, Juan Soto hit a three-run homer with two outs to give the Mets a 5-3 lead, but Olson clubbed a two-run shot — his second homer of the game and 24th of the season — in the bottom of the frame to tie the game 5-5 and force extra innings.
Dodgers 8, Rockies 7 (11 innings)
Dalton Rushing delivered the winning single in the 11th inning and Shohei Ohtani homered and drove in four runs to help Los Angeles edge visiting Colorado.
Rushing, Ohtani and Kyle Tucker each had three hits as the Dodgers prevailed in their first extra-inning contest of the season. Ohtani belted the 299th homer of his career.
Cole Carrigg had three hits, two RBIs and scored three times and Ezequiel Tovar homered and had two RBIs for the Rockies, who trailed 6-1 after four innings. Colorado overcame a 6-3 deficit in the ninth inning but squandered a 7-6 lead in the 10th.
Royals 15, Phillies 1
Luke Maile, Salvador Perez, Lane Thomas and Tyler Tolbert homered to lead host Kansas City to a rout of Philadelphia.
Tolbert went 5-for-5 with three runs and two RBIs for the Royals, who scored in all eight of the innings they batted and collected a season-high 22 hits. Royals starter Noah Cameron (5-6) allowed a run and six hits in five innings.
Trea Turner finished 3-for-4 for the Phillies, who have lost three of their past four. All-Star left-hander Cristopher Sanchez (10-4) surrendered a career-high nine runs on 12 hits in 3 1/3 innings.
Giants 10, Blue Jays 1
Heliot Ramos smacked two home runs, Landen Roupp completed eight innings for the first time in his major league career and San Francisco opened a three-game interleague series with a romp over visiting Toronto.
Victor Bericoto stole home as part of a two-hit, two-run, two-RBI performance for the Giants, who were opening a seven-game homestand. Roupp (6-8) limited the defending American League champions to three hits.
Kazuma Okamoto got Toronto within 3-1 in the sixth with his 20th home run of the season. Kevin Gausman (4-8) was charged with seven runs (four earned) on five hits in 5 1/3 innings.
Nationals 12, Astros 11
James Wood hit a grand slam, CJ Abrams had three hits including a three-run homer and host Washington rallied from an early five-run deficit before holding on to beat Houston.
Curtis Mead had a solo home run among his three hits and added three RBIs for the Nationals, who scored 11 straight runs to turn a 6-1 deficit into a 12-6 lead. Miles Mikolas (3-7) picked up the win despite allowing seven runs on nine hits over six innings. Clayton Beeter got the final four outs for his seventh save.
Jose Altuve and Brice Matthews hit three-run homers and Yainer Diaz had a two-run shot for the Astros, who plated four runs in the eighth. Mike Burrows (4-9) allowed 10 runs (seven earned) on nine hits in 4 1/3 innings.
Brewers 4, Cardinals 3
Brice Turang’s two-run single capped a four-run seventh for Milwaukee, which rallied to beat host St. Louis.
David Hamilton went 2-for-3 with a two-run double but left in the seventh inning with left hamstring tightness. Garrett Mitchell also went 2-for-3 with a run as the Brewers scratched out eight hits to get their sixth win in eight games. Shane Drohan (4-2) pitched six innings, allowing three runs (one earned).
Jose Fermin went 2-for-3 with a run-scoring single capping the Cardinals’ two-run third. Dustin May tossed 4 2/3 scoreless innings, but his replacement, Justin Bruihl, sprained his right ankle. Ryan Fernandez (1-2) yielded three runs (two earned) without recording an out.
Yankees 5, Rays 1
Jose Caballero went deep twice against his former club and drove in four runs as New York beat Tampa Bay in St. Petersburg, Fla.
Caballero slugged similar shots in the fifth and eight innings as the struggling Yankees won for just the second time in 11 games. Ben Rice also homered for New York, which had just three hits, all of which were home runs.
Yankees starter Cam Schlittler (9-5) allowed just one run on four hits over eight innings. Richie Palacios was 2-for-3 with an RBI single for the Rays. Tampa Bay starter Griffin Jax (4-6) yielded just one hit but three runs in five innings. He fanned 10.
Diamondbacks 8, Padres 0
Max Kepler, Geraldo Perdomo and Nolan Arenado homered while Brandon Pfaadt sailed through five shutout innings as visiting Arizona routed San Diego.
Pfaadt (2-1) allowed four hits and walked none while striking out six in his second straight win. The Diamondbacks prevailed for the fourth time in 10 games.
Walker Buehler (5-5) yielded seven hits and seven runs in five innings as the Padres fell for the ninth time in 10 games.
