Johto Opens Up on Your Screen in Unofficial Pokemon Gold PC Port
A fresh unofficial recreation of Pokemon Gold now runs natively on Windows, Mac, Linux, and other platforms, and the timing feels right for anyone who still carries those early Johto memories. Built by bryanthaboi and a growing group of contributors under the gen1recomp project, the latest builds bring the Game Boy Color classic into a modern framework that already handled Red, Blue, and Yellow. Players supply their own verified US Gold ROM, the software extracts the data, and the game launches without any original Nintendo code in the mix.
The engine is created in Lua from scratch using the LÖVE2D framework. The map behavior, scripts, and logic are all written in clean, modern code. Meanwhile, the images, audio, and game data come directly from the ROM; all you have to do is insert it and wait for the import procedure to complete. Following that, subsequent loads will just pull from a private local cache on your PC. The new Gold rom sits alongside the Generation I titles in the same launcher, with each having its own fully distinct save file. If you look at the most recent releases, 0.1.79 and the plethora of fast fixes in 0.1.80, you’ll notice that they’ve finally ironed out a lot of the rough edges from the early days. Trading animations, ledge jumps, store menus, Pokégear peculiarities, and even the nurse animations were all kind of strange at one point.

One of the first things most people want to do is look at the depth view. When you press button 3, the camera will tilt up, adding depth to the flat tile maps. Buildings, roads, water, and walls will all appear to be layered on top of each other, while your characters will remain clear and readable as sprites in space. Then, by pressing 4, you can cycle thru the zoom levels to obtain a better perspective of the entire countryside or get right up close to the action. The UI remains in place as the world scales up or down, and if you’re looking at a smaller map, the boundary blocks will kick in to prevent anything from being chopped off, and of course, the color modes other GB screen effects remain, just like they did in previous games. The ultimate result is that it still looks and feels just like Johto did originally, but it feels a little more… solid.
There are also many modern conveniences hidden in the background. Save and load are now easily accessible in the menu for quick checkpoints. With a single button click, you may change the game pace, switch to widescreen battle layouts, and skip the trade animation. The controls are completely configurable, allowing you to switch between keyboard and controller (or simply use the vibration on your controller). There’s also a full-fledged mod manager in place, so you can continue to utilize all Generation I mods where they overlap with Gold, and there are some new hooks particular to the new engine to boot. Of course, we offer touch controls and on-screen pads to ensure that mobile and handheld builds run smoothly.
If you’re curious, head over to the project’s GitHub release page and get the build for your system. Then, simply use a real US Gold ROM and you’re done. The entire process takes only a few moments, and then the old familiar title scene plays, the clouds begin streaming past Ho-Oh, and Johto is yours to explore once more, although this time the buildings and hills have a little more depth to them when you want them to.
