Sennheiser’s Momentum True Wireless 5 Arrive Ready for the Long Haul, Has Batteries You Can Actually Swap
Sennheiser pulled the cover off its newest flagship earbuds, the Momentum True Wireless 5, this morning, and the most practical change sits right in plain view. Both the buds and their charging case now accept fresh batteries that any owner can install with a small screwdriver. No glue to dig through, no trip to a service center required. When the cells finally fade after years of daily use, the hardware stays useful instead of heading for the recycling bin.
These replacement cells provide you with piece of mind for a long time. Each earbud can easily last 12 hours of listening, assuming noise cancelation is turned off. If you choose to use that handy feature, the duration is reduced to roughly 6 hours. The case should provide an additional 40 hours of battery life. A short 8-minute charge via the USB-C connector will provide you with another hour of listening time, and the case itself supports Qi wireless charging. The battery sizes are 72 mAh for each earbud and 760 mAh for the case.

Sennheiser’s famous 7 mm TrueResponse drivers are back, manufactured and tested in-house at their Tullamore, Ireland, plant. They can handle frequencies ranging from 5 Hz to 21 kHz with low distortion and a sensitivity of 107 dB. Wireless transmission is via Bluetooth 6.0, with support for aptX Adaptive and aptX Lossless, which implies 24-bit/96 kHz streaming on compatible phones and devices. For gaming, Snapdragon Sound provides a low latency alternative. You also receive multipoint pairing, Google Fast Pair, and Microsoft Swift Pair to make things as simple as possible. There’s also a useful robust mode that helps keep the connection rock firm in congested radio regions.
Noise cancellation undergoes a small overhaul. A redesigned ear tip works in unison with a four-microphone array on each side to seal in sound and direct it through the adaptive hybrid system. There’s also an automated anti-wind option to help when it’s breezy outside. Transparency mode has been dubbed the most natural-sounding version yet. Call quality is based on six external microphones and two bone-conduction sensors that work together with a smart AI system to separate the wearer’s voice from background noise. In a great touch, the mics are covered in a small micro-perforated plate to reduce wind noise as it reaches them.
Spatial audio has finally here, with support for Dolby Atmos and interactive head tracking, which allows the sound field to change as you move your head. Sennheiser’s free Smart Control Plus software now includes an eight-band graphic equalizer and several useful tools for personalizing your music. You can still experiment with the physical controls if you like, using the same software as previously.
You don’t have to be concerned about how they fit because the design also received further consideration. The housing’s fins have been eliminated, and it has been changed into a sleeker, more aerodynamic shape utilizing hundreds of ear scans. 73% of test subjects preferred the new design and said it was more comfortable. Each earbud weighs only 7 grams, slightly more than the previous iteration, and the case has been reduced to fit comfortably in a pocket. It now has an IP54 rating for dust and water resistance.
You can choose from five distinct metallic finishes: graphite, cream, copper, denim, and lavender. What about the price? They will cost you $299.95, the same as its predecessor. They should ship on September 3rd via Sennheiser’s website and a few more retailers.
