Day 7: Financial Crimes Evidence in the Case Against Kouri Richins, Accused of Poisoning Her Husband

DAY SEVEN: Kouri Richins is on trial in Utah for the death of her husband, Eric Richins, who was found unresponsive in their home on March 4, 2022 and later determined to have died from fent* intoxication.

Prosecutors allege Kouri poisoned Eric after financial disputes, life-insurance changes, and marital conflict. They claim she obtained fentanyl through an acquaintance and administered it to her husband, and they have also charged her with attempted aggravated murder related to an alleged earlier incident weeks before his death. Additional counts in the homicide case include insurance fraud and forgery.

Separately, Richins faces a distinct financial-crimes case alleging mortgage fraud, money laundering, forgery, issuing bad checks, communications fraud, and engaging in a pattern of unlawful activity.

Richins has pleaded not guilty to the charges. Prosecutors are not seeking the death penalty.The case has drawn national attention in part because, one year after Eric’s death, she published a children’s book about coping with grief.
