Vernon Kay shares health update as he returns to BBC Radio 2 slot
BBC Radio 2 presenter Vernon Kay has returned to his normal radio slot after he was forced to pull out of Tuesday’s show on orders from his doctor.
The 50-year-old presenter sounded hoarse and unwell as he presented Monday morning’s show (23 september), with some listeners remarking he sounded “awful” and shouldn’t be working.
The next day, Kay told his followers that his doctor had advised him to go on vocal rest, and that Gabby Roslin would be stepping in to cover him.
The All Star Family Fortunes returned to the airwaves on Wednesday morning (25 September) sounding less croaky, telling his followers he wasn’t feeling fully recovered yet, but was aiming to plough through.
“We’re back. We’re not 100%,” he said. “But if I took another day off with a sore throat, the big fella, Norman my dad, would have killed me.”
Kay added that Monday’s show was “horrific” but thanked his listeners for supporting him by sending in more voice notes as usual to fill in gaps in the show.
“It;s surprising when you’ve lost your voice how much energy it takes to speak,” he remarked.
He added: “Thank you for your help, we managed to get through it with your voice notes.”
“Big thanks to Gabby for taking over yesterday. She’s such a lovely person.”
During Kay’s show on Monday, listeners remarked that it was “unprofessional” that Kay was allowed to broadcast in his condition.
One listener wrote: “It’s actually a bit unprofessional in my opinion. I don’t know what @BBCRadio2 are thinking of. It’s 1 thing him going in, but Vernon wasn’t sent home sounding like that when he’s on for 2.5 hours?”
Another added: “It’s awful to hear Vernon‘s not well. Couldn’t he stay at home and wait till his voice gets better? I love the man but couldn’t Radio 2 have got a last minute DJ replacement? Me! Or you! Don’t mind but I hate hearing a bad cold type voice on the radio.”

“WOW! Vernon Kay sounds awful this morning,” chimed another fan. “His voice is almost gone. Get better soon Vern.”
On his return on Wednesday, Kay was more bubbly as he asked listeners to help him suggest a new sound for his “School Register” segment.
Sending voice messages into the programme, one listener joked: “Welcome back to Vern’s voice” as another said, “Good to have you back”.

Made in Chelsea stars to return for spin off reunion series
Members of the original Made in Chelsea cast will return for a new spin off series.
The BAFTA-winning Channel 4 reality show has followed the lives of the upper-class King’s Road set since 2011 and has made household names of cast members including Jamie Laing, Spencer Matthews, Ollie Locke and Louise Thompson.
Fan favourites Binky Felstead, Rosie Fortescue, and Lucy Watson will once again share their lives on screen for the new show, Beyond Chelsea.
Now in their thirties, the three reality stars will be followed by cameras as they navigate career challenges, marriage and motherhood.
Felstead, who has welcomed three children with her consultant husband Max Darnton, revealed a “lot has changed” in her life since she first joined Made in Chelsea 14 years ago.
Fortescue, who left Made in Chelsea in 2014, said: “I never thought I’d be back on camera, but I couldn’t turn down the opportunity to film with my best friend, set some records straight and open up my life a little more than I did in the past.”
Meanwhile Watson, who shares a son with her Made in Chelsea co-star and husband James Dunmore, admitted she feels “nervous” to “share so much” about her life with the public again.
“I never imagined returning to reality TV,” she said. “However, after eight years it turns out I actually quite miss it.”
Watson has previously revealed she found her contract with Made in Chelsea “controlling”.
Of her decision to quit the cast, she told her former co-star Jamie Laing on his Private Parts podcast: “I realised you can’t really be in a happy relationship on that show. At that point I was quite serious with James so I was like ‘actually I value this more.’
“Plus the controlling side of [the show] where you couldn’t do other work really annoyed me because I really wanted to do loads more,” she added.

Felstead previously hinted she would return for a Made in Chelsea spin-off six years after her departure, if she were joined by Fortescue and Louise Thompson.
Writing on her Instagram story in October last year, she said: “It would have to be a very differently filmed show, but these two and I are still super close and were discussing potential ideas over lunch last month.”
Thompson has not been announced as a cast member on Beyond Chelsea. The former reality star has suffered a myriad of health issues since leaving Made in Chelsea after she was forced to have an emergency caesarean in November 2021.
The event led to a series of physical and mental complications, which led to haemorrhages, the removal of her colon, fitting of a stoma bag, and a series of newly diagnosed physical and mental health conditions.
“I was very unlucky because I had this cascade of events happen to me,” she said of the ordeal.
“‘Old Louise’ would have been fuming because when I wanted something in the past, I made it happen. But none of it matters, not even the fact that I can’t carry another child. It’s over now — and I’ve been given a second shot at life.”
Beyond Chelsea will air on E4 and stream on Channel 4 later this year.

Nick Knowles gives update on Strictly injury in new video as place on show hangs by a thread
NICK Knowles has given an update on his injury as his place on Strictly hangs by a thread.
Over the weekend presenter Nick, 62, damaged his shoulder while changing a car tyre, just hours after his first Strictly Come Dancing performance.
The Sun revealed last night that – despite the DIY SOS host being in a sling – he would return to rehearsals today before being assessed by a show doctor.
Now Nick has spoken out, telling fans: “It’s been an interesting few days.
“I’ve had a lot to think about. I’ve seen a lot of people, I’ve got loads of people trying to make everything work for me.”
In a clip posted on Instagram, Nick continued: “I’m feeling good, arm’s in a sling still to make sure that it’s rested and that I’m not using it.
More on Strictly Come Dancing
“But today I’m going to try and dance and see what my capabilities are.
“Luba [Mushtuk] is trying to prepare a dance that will work for me… it’s a big day for me, I’m really hoping that we find out that I can dance on Saturday.
“I’d really like to stay part of the competition, so keep your fingers crossed for me!”
Today it was reported that “anxious” producers have drafted an “emergency plan” to decide what to do next, and are hoping to keep the star on the show as they await to hear from the medical team.
“They are all anxiously waiting to get the all clear from the medical team about Nick being able to compete this weekend, but are determined not to lose him from the show,” a source told the Mail.
The insider said that Nick could get a “free pass” to the following week, which is not unusual in these circumstances.
“He is such a popular figure with viewers, and if he needs time to recover he will get a free pass to return the following week, all being well,” they continued.
“If that bothers other contestants, then so be it. The bosses want him back.”

Maya Jama: ITV’s Love Island host to replace Rita Ora on The Masked Singer
Maya Jama has been announced as the newest judge on The Masked Singer.
The Love Island presenter, 30, will replace singer Rita Ora on the panel, who reportedly stepped down from her role on the hidden celebrity singing competition after five series this June.
Jama will join The Masked Singer judging panel alongside Jonathan Ross, Davina McCall and Mo Gilligan, who will all resume their celebrity detective roles.
ITV’s Masked Singer, which is presented by comedian Joel Dommett, sees a set of celebrities sing familiar songs on stage, while dressed up in a costume hiding their identities.
The judges and in-studio audience have to guess who they are based on their voices and obscure clues given to them throughout the series.
Jama said of her new spot on the show’s judging panel: “I’m such a Masked Singer fan, so joining the panel alongside Davina, Jonathan, and Mo – and of course working with Joel – is going to be so much fun!
“I can’t wait to figure out who’s underneath all those incredible costumes, vibe to their performances, and get front-row seats to the unmaskings,” she continued. “I’ve watched the show for a long time, so I’m definitely bringing my A-game to the panel!”
Since the show first aired in 2020, The Masked Singer UK has reached 37 million viewers who have tuned in to guess who is hiding behind the mask. The highly anticipated series will return to ITV in 2025.
A fresh batch of famous faces will don a line-up of extraordinary and elaborate costumes, in a bid to disguise their identities, as they sing in front of a studio audience and the celebrity judging panel.
This year’s cast follow in the footsteps of superstars including Dionne Warwick, NeYo, Richie Sambora, Michael Owen, Daisy May Cooper, Sophie Ellis-Bextor, Sue Perkins, Lorraine Kelly, Sir Lenny Henry and Joss Stone, who have all previously featured on the show.
The Masked Singer producers Daniel Nettleton and Derek McLean added: “When we decided to add a bombshell to the panel, we knew we need not look any further than Maya.
“She might be a style icon and fashion magazine cover girl, but when it comes to music, she’s an absolute nerd, which might help her solve the clues as our newest celebrity detective.
“We are delighted to welcome her to the Masked Singer family.”
