Al Weaver spoke on Alan Titchmarsh’s show about his first day filming the ITV drama
Grantchester star Al Weaver appeared on Alan Titchmarsh’s Love Your Weekend on Sunday to discuss the ITV series as it draws to a close.
Al, who portrays Leonard Finch, told Alan he enjoys playing a “troubled soul”. He explained: “I mean, when we started, he was kind of just the comedy relief, along with Tessa and a couple of other people. It was kind of just all sorts of light stuff.
“But then it started going into his sort of personal life and his sexuality and all that sort of stuff, and then they just keep throwing everything at him, and it’s great, because for me, every year we come back and we talk about it in the offseason and say, ‘What can we do?’
“But again, you know, this year we find him, and he’s really happy, as happy as he can be, and then he is dissatisfied, and then some else happens.
“And but for me, it’s a great joy to just kind of navigate all those different things that we all experience,” reports the Mirror.

Following a clip from Al’s debut episode, which featured him sporting a moustache, the actor revealed his concerns about potentially losing his part.
“I’d forgotten about the moustache,” Alan remarked afterwards, prompting Al to respond: “We had all forgotten the moustache.
“Yeah, that lasted one episode,” the actor chuckled as Alan enquired: “Did you have it when you went in, or did you grow it for it?”
When Al confirmed he cultivated the moustache specifically for the script, he elaborated: “And it takes me a while to grow a moustache, and then you shave it off after a day.
“But I remember that was my first day, the first time I had met James [Norton] at the read-through, but that was our first scene together.
“And, they put the stuff on, did my hair, did the moustache, and I thought I was gonna get fired. Honestly, I was just like, I look ridiculous.”
He continued: “I thought, ‘This is it. I’m just gonna walk on set, and they’ll be like, we’ve made a mistake.”
Nevertheless, despite his concerns, the Grantchester star revealed the producers at the time considered it “perfect”.
Grantchester airs tonight at 9pm on ITV.
