Judd Trump registers 1,000th century in British Open defeat by Mark Allen
World number one Judd Trump compiled his 1,000th career century but still fell to a 5-3 defeat by Mark Allen in the quarter-finals of the British Open.
Trump becomes only the third player to achieve the feat, after Ronnie O’Sullivan in 2019 and John Higgins, who reached the milestone earlier in September.
The Englishman made a superb break of 101 in the second frame to level at 1-1 but went 4-1 down before briefly rallying against the Northern Irishman, who will now face Mark Selby in Saturday’s semi-finals.
Four-time world champion Selby claimed his fourth consecutive victory in a final-frame decider as he held off David Gilbert to win 5-4.
Higgins, another four-time Crucible winner, knocked in two century breaks as he thrashed Elliot Slessor 5-1.
The 49-year-old Scot will now play Jak Jones or Oliver Lines.

Shane van Gisbergen earns NASCAR Cup pole at Charlotte Roval
Shane van Gisbergen is missing out on the Bathurst 1000 this weekend for the first time since 2006, but he’s making the most of it as he dominates the NASCAR time sheets in Charlotte, North Carolina. This is his first pole position in just 12 career starts at the Cup level.
Tyler Reddick, who spun in practice, had a much tidier qualifying session, setting the early benchmark in the final round at 1:22.796s. SVG waited and ran very late, taking the top spot by less than a tenth with a 1:22.704s. To the the surprise of everyone, Reddick was able to response with an impressive second run where he closed the gap despite older tires, coming within 0.057s of Van Gisbergen’s pole time.

“He’s [Reddick] obviously very quick to do those extra laps and still match it,” said Van Gisbergen, who is driving the No. 13 Chevrolet this weekend. “Thank you to this Kaulig Racing team. Last minute deal to come and race here. Thanks to Matt [Kaulig] and the guys for letting me run their car and of course, WeatherTech for coming on board too. What an amazing day. I’m at a loss for words.”
SVG went on to say that he will be mindful of those in the playoff fight as this Sunday’s Cup race is the Round of 12 elimination race. “Just make sure we race clean. I have to respect there’s a lot of playoff guys around me. I have to race respectfully. But yeah, we’re here to win the race.”
Behind the SVG-Reddick front row will be defending race winner A.J. Allmendinger in third, Joey Logano fourth, and Austin Cindric fifth. Team Penske teammates Logano and Cindric both enter this race in the elimination zone.
Kyle Larson, Chase Elliott, Brad Keselowski, Bubba Wallace, and William Byron rounded out the top-ten in qualifying.
Playoff drivers starting a bit deeper in the field: Christopher Bell 12th; Daniel Suarez 13th; Ryan Blaney 14th; Alex Bowman 17th; Denny Hamlin 18th; Chase Briscoe 25th.
There were notable incidents during the session, which featured a new track layout with alterations to the Turns 5-7 section, as well as a tighter frontstretch chicane.

Artur Beterbiev vs Dmitry Bivol LIVE RESULTS: Main event underway NOW, Whittaker in hospital, Clarke KNOCKED OUT
Awkward
Did anyone see that press conference earlier this week? Artur Beterbiev and Eddie Hearn had an awkward and mildly terrifying exchange.
Host Dev Sahni asked: “He [Eddie] called you [Beterbiev] arrogant, what are your thoughts on that?”
Beterbiev replied: “You are trying to make me have a fight with Eddie? I can’t do something you know.”
Hearn quickly replied: “Don’t you worry about me. You have to get through Bivol first. When he is finished with you, it will be easier for me.”
Beterbiev then made a joke fight offer, adding: “Maybe with you today? You are not in good condition right now?”
Hearn replied: “Not for you that’s not a tough challenge. Me? I’m in terrible condition.”
The champion added: “You talk a lot, okay we will see this Saturday.”
Hearn had the final word, obviously: “That is my job, you should try it.”
“He’s a dangerous man”
Frank Warren speaking to DAZN: “That was sensational. I did expect Fabio to win but I thought it would have gone a few more rounds.
“But that was some finish. He’s a dangerous man. A powerful man. I understand that Frazer has fractured or broken his cheek bone.
“That last punch – he was gone on his feet. Fabio has announced himself on the world stage and will be on the world stage next year.”
Asked about his next fight and potential candidates, Warren said: “I think he’s ready to take on people in the top ten now. He’s very capable of fighting for a world title, no doubt about that.”
Worried for Frazer
Light-heavyweight contender Anthony Yarde told Sky Sports: “I’m happy for Fabio, but at the same time I’m so worried for Frazer.
“Anyone in boxing knows that Frazer is one of the nicest people in boxing so that’s why I was worried. Seeing him look like that was worrying. It’s the hurt sport, but seeing that don’t make me feel good.
“Well done to Fabio. He’s got that dog in him. The way he swings and he’s very skilful as well.”
The main event
And then there was one. Artur Beterbiev vs Dmitry Bivol.
The pair will finally step in the ring together with all four titles on the line. Beterbiev holds the WBC, WBO and IBF belts while 33-year-old Bivol is the WBA Super champion.
Now this contest was scheduled for 11pm with the fight expected to start at around 23:30 – but I do hope they’ll bring it forward, for all our sakes.
War by name War by nature
Report from our man Wally Downes Jr in Riyadh
Fabio Wardley massacred Frazer Clarke in a single brilliant round that left the battered challenger with a DENT in his skull.
The 29-year-old Suffolk Puncher survived a horribly mangled nose back in March when the Olympic bronze winner smashed it into a bloody mess and they shared a brilliant draw.
But in Riyadh on Saturday night it was 33-year-old Clarke and his mess of a corner that needed wiping off of the floor.
Brilliant Wardley grinned: “I know that once I hurt someone, I can get rid of them. I had a few issues for the first fight but I got rid of them, had a game plan and executed it.
“I learned enough from the first fight to know I had enough to beat him properly. I can’t help it, it’s my name; War by name War by nature.
“I want belts and titles next, these domestic ones are great but I want the ones that have ‘world’ written on them.
“I want belts and titles next, these domestic ones are great but I want the ones that have ‘world’ written on them.”
On his feet
It’s good to see Frazer Clarke is back up on his feet. He walks over to congratulate Fabio Wardley before being escorted out of the ring. Fingers crossed he’s not too damaged after that.

Lee Carsley: What can England learn from Luis de la Fuente and Lionel Scaloni?
Southgate came through the same route as Carsley, being promoted from the under-21 job and leading England initially on an interim basis, although he had previously managed Middlesbrough too.
Carsley’s managerial experience has entailed interim spells at Coventry, Brentford and Birmingham.
While many England fans wanted Southgate to go, criticising perceived negative tactics, he will go down as the country’s second most successful men’s manager ever.
He led the Three Lions to European Championship finals in 2021 and 2024 – losing both – with only Sir Alf Ramsey guiding England to a men’s final before, the 1966 World Cup which remains their only trophy.
“Southgate’s achievements were regarded as vindication for the years of work done in building a national coaching system after he took over permanently in November 2016,” said BBC chief football writer Phil McNulty.
“The idea of promoting from within their system is understandably attractive to the FA as it would be a clear demonstration of its developmental coaching success, following in the footsteps of Spain.
“Carsley’s ascent also appealed to the FA because he has worked so closely with a group of young players at development levels, such as Cole Palmer, Phil Foden, Anthony Gordon, Marc Guehi and others. De la Fuente was a similar case in point as he built Spain’s latest powerful team.
“This was all part of the St George’s Park strategy put in place by the FA.”
But some England fans might prefer a bigger name – like Eddie Howe, Graham Potter, the dream albeit unlikely option of Pep Guardiola – or new bookmakers’ favourite Thomas Tuchel.
“Lee Carsley’s ill-fated selection gamble against Greece placed a large boulder in the Football Association’s preferred pathway for the national team manager,” said McNulty.
“It has re-opened the debate as to whether Carsley has the credentials and experience to take England to the 2026 World Cup when the FA would have much preferred a smooth handover of power, with another graduate from the St George’s Park system steeped in what they like to call their DNA at the helm after Southgate.”

BKFC Spain recap: Conor McGregor hands out double pay to main event fighters after bloody, brutal war
Conor McGregor made it a red panty night for both fighters competing in the BKFC Spain main event
Franco Tenaglia capped off the bare-knuckle promotion’s first ever event in Spain by capturing the lightweight title in an absolute war with Tony Soto across five rounds but it was the Irish superstar who blessed both men afterwards.
“What we’re going to do for these two gentlemen as well as a bonus is double their purse,” McGregor announced after the fight. “They’re getting double pay. That’s damn straight. Well done gentlemen, you are getting double pay and bonuses. Thank you for your service.”
The massive gesture from BKFC’s newest co-owner came after Tenaglia and Soto battled it out in one of the craziest fights in the history of the promotion.
Defense went flying out of the ring as Tenaglia and Soto just constantly stepped into the pocket and blasted each other with huge combinations. Soto actually dropped Tenaglia badly in the second round with a brutal body shot and it appeared the American fighter might get a stoppage.
Instead, Tenaglia survived the round and then dished out even more punishment of his own as the fight continued. When the fight was over, Tenaglia’s face was busted up and swollen and the same could be said for Soto as the crowd in Marbella gave them a standing ovation.
In the end, the judges scored the fight twice for Tenaglia 47-45 with the third official giving it a 46-46. That was still enough for Tenaglia to get the nod by majority decision as he becomes the new BKFC lightweight champion and he also goes home with a lot more money than he expected.
“I’ve been waiting for this 10 years,” Tenaglia said after his win. “I used to fight in warehouses in the middle of nowhere but look at me now. I’m a world champion.”
In the co-main event, former boxing champion Austin Trout continued his dominant run since joining the BKFC roster as he successfully defended his welterweight title with a shutout performance over Rico Franco.
Trout scored a pair of knockdowns but just couldn’t quite put Franco away as the challenger just kept coming after him despite taking far more damage during the fight. All three judges scored the fight 50-43 in lopsided fashion as Trout moved to 3-0 in BKFC with Saturday serving as his first title defense.
In the third title fight on the card, Dave Mundell continued to run roughshod over the competition as he demolished Danny Christie with a devastating punch in the second round to end his night. Mundell nearly stopped the fight in the first round after he put Christie down early and never allowed him a second to gain any kind of momentum.
The final shot saw Christie crash to the canvas and despite his best effort to get back to his feet, the referee saw enough to stop the contest at :55 seconds into the second round.
Here are the full results for BKFC Spain:
Franco Tenaglia def. Tony Soto via majority decision (46-46, 47-45, 47-45)
Austin Trout def. Ricardo Franco via unanimous decision (50-43 x3)

Dan Chapman def. Mike Jurik via TKO at 1:26, R1

Yunus Batan def. Maxine Bellamy via unanimous decision (48-44 x3)
Nico Gaffie def. Radek Stadler via TKO at 1:04, R2
Arbi Chakaev def. Jose Daniel via TKO at 59 seconds, R1
David Mora def. Fran Suarez via TKO (doctor’s stoppage) at 2:00, R4
