It’s always a great time to be a fan of The Lord of the Rings, but there are plenty of projects in the works right now for Tolkien heads to be excited about. Prime Video has confirmed that the third season of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power wrapped filming at the end of last year, and while it’s still lacking an official return date, fans remain optimistic that it could come back before the end of this year. There is also The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum to look forward to, which will return both Elijah Wood and Ian McKellen to their signature roles as Frodo Baggins and Gandalf. Further casting is being kept under wraps, but everyone is waiting on pins and needles for the news that Viggo Mortensen will be back for another run as Aragorn.
Lord of the Rings fans are always on the lookout for the next big project. The demand is rising for a Triple A, open-world video game set in the Lord of the Rings universe, which would be a guaranteed smash-hit if developed properly. While official updates on this front are silent, a new Lord of the Rings project was officially announced last night. Peter Jackson has confirmed that a new Lord of the Rings sequel movie is in the works, set to be released after The Hunt for Gollum. Late-night host Stephen Colbert will write the script for the film with Philippa Boyens and Peter McGee, and it will be based on the eighth chapter in The Fellowship of the Ring, Fogs on the Barrow-downs. The official synopsis for the film reads as follows:
“14 years after the passing of Frodo, Sam, Merry, and Pippin set out to retrace the first steps of their adventure. Meanwhile, Sam’s daughter, Elanor, has discovered a long-buried secret and is determined to uncover why the War of the Ring was nearly lost before it ever began.”

What Does This Mean for the Future of the Lord of the Rings?
Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema greenlighting a new Lord of the Rings movie to be co-written by Stephen Colbert means Lord of the Rings fans have more than one big-screen project to be excited about in the future. While it’s far too early to predict who will star in Colbert’s new sequel movie, which will be set 14 years after the death of Frodo, fans can rest assured that there will certainly be some big names attached to star in and possibly even produce the project.
Stay tuned to Collider for more updates on Stephen Colbert’s new Lord of the Rings movie, and coverage of the wider Lord of the Rings universe.
