10 Greatest Character-Driven Sci-Fi Movies, Ranked
Sci-fi is usually associated with spectacle: spaceships, alien worlds, futuristic technology. However, the genre’s most enduring stories go deeper than just those trappings. Indeed, they turn inward and touch on rich themes, using the unfamiliar to illuminate the deeply human, all while serving up compelling characters who hold our attention.
The science fiction movies on this list all boast intriguing heroes or antagonists, and the characters’ decisions provide most of the narrative momentum. Often, these fascinating figures are confronted with something they cannot quite comprehend, forced to reckon not just with aliens or machines, but with themselves. In the process, they craft thought-provoking arcs that leave you pondering and perhaps a little changed.
10
‘Under the Skin’ (2013)
“I am not myself.” Jonathan Glazer‘s Under the Skin is one of the most philosophical and identity-focused sci-fi movies of the last quarter-century. In it, an alien entity disguised as a human woman (Scarlett Johansson) roams Scotland, seducing and capturing men for an unknown purpose. As she continues her work, something begins to shift within her, a growing awareness that complicates her role as predator.
Johansson’s performance is hauntingly detached, gradually evolving into something more uncertain and vulnerable. For example, her early interactions are transactional and controlled. Later encounters, especially with the disfigured man (Adam Pearson), reveal hesitation and something like empathy. There isn’t much plot in the traditional sense. Instead, we get lingering close-ups, abstract imagery (the black void, the dissolving bodies), and observational sequences of everyday human life. All these elements externalize the alien’s inner state. Ultimately, Under the Skin very much refuses to explain itself, allowing its ambiguous meaning to emerge through feeling.
9
‘Ex Machina’ (2014)
“Isn’t it strange to create something that hates you?” Ex Machina follows a young programmer, Caleb (Domhnall Gleeson), who is invited to administer a Turing test to Ava (Alicia Vikander), an advanced AI created by the reclusive tech genius Nathan (Oscar Isaac). However, Caleb soon begins to question the nature of Ava’s consciousness… and Nathan’s intentions. Alex Garland builds this premise into a psychological pressure-cooker, relying on little more than conversation.
The dialogue is precise and layered, exploring themes of consciousness, control, and manipulation. The setting is minimal, the cast small, yet the stakes feel immense. Every plot development emerges directly from the characters’ desires and traits, whether that’s Caleb’s loneliness and idealism, Nathan’s ego and tendency to underestimate people, or Ava’s hidden strategizing. The performances are strong across the board, doing a lot to flesh out the characters and give them interesting dimensions they might have lacked simply on the page.
8
‘Her’ (2013)
“The heart’s not like a box that gets filled up. It expands in size the more you love.” Joaquin Phoenix delivers a brilliant performance in Her as Theodore, a lonely writer who develops a romantic relationship with an advanced operating system named Samantha (voiced by Scarlett Johansson). Their connection deepens way beyond that of owner and machine, challenging his understanding of love and intimacy. The tale that follows is disarmingly intimate, a major break with most sci-fi movies of its time.
Rather than being about killer robots or a mecha apocalypse, Her is all about emotions and psychology, love, and loneliness. It’s one of the most prescient films ever made about modern isolation and humanity’s relationship with technology. The aesthetics complement this approach perfectly. Spike Jonze creates a future that is soft, warm, and accessible, not that far off from our own, allowing the focus to remain on Theodore’s internal journey.
7
‘Gattaca’ (1997)
“There is no gene for the human spirit.” Gattaca follows Vincent Freeman (Ethan Hawke), a man born without genetic enhancement in a society that values perfection. Determined to pursue his dream of space travel, he assumes the identity of a genetically superior individual, risking everything to pass as something he is not. Although that premise draws heavily on hard sci-fi, it becomes the jumping-off point for a deeply human story about ambition and identity.
Unlike many dystopian films, Gattaca is not about overthrowing the system: there is no revolution, no mass uprising, no attempt to dismantle the genetic hierarchy. Rather, the story is intensely personal, and Vincent’s inner defiance drives the whole plot, refusing his assigned limitations and the authority of genetic destiny — he refuses to see himself as inferior. Through him, the film engages smartly with questions around gene-editing, inequality, and discrimination, and the technologies it depicts are rapidly advancing in the real world.
6
‘District 9’ (2009)
“You are all sick!” District 9 was one of the most thematically rich and creative sci-fis of the 2000s. It bucked genre convention by depicting its aliens as extraterrestrial refugees confined to a slum in Johannesburg, where they are exploited and marginalized by humans. When bureaucrat Wikus van de Merwe (Sharlto Copley) is exposed to alien biotechnology, he begins to undergo a transformation that forces him to see the world differently.
Wikus begins as an unremarkable, even unlikable figure, but his transformation, both physical and emotional, becomes the heart of the narrative. At first, he is bureaucratic, eager to please, and even casually racist, but his priorities rapidly shift once his metamorphosis begins. In this sense, the protagonist’s journey mirrors the film’s broader societal critique. It helps that Copley delivers such a charming, entertaining performance in the role. Finally, on the aesthetic side, the documentary-style presentation adds a perfect touch of realism, making the world feel immediate and lived-in.
5
‘Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind’ (2004)
“Blessed are the forgetful, for they get the better even of their blunders.” This quirky gem was directed by Michel Gondry, one of the masters of offbeat cinema. Here, he strikes the perfect balance between strange and accessible. Jim Carrey plays Joel, who discovers that his ex-girlfriend Clementine (Kate Winslet) has undergone a procedure to erase all memories of their relationship. In response, he chooses to do the same, only to change his mind as the memories begin to disappear.
Gondry uses this speculative setup as a tool for emotional excavation; the sci-fi elements never overshadow the human ones. As Joel relives moments from his relationship, the film moves fluidly through time and space, mirroring the fragmented nature of memory itself. It becomes a blunt, vulnerable study of a relationship. It’s all believably messy: moments of joy blur with moments of pain, trivial details take on emotional weight, and regrets surface too late.
4
‘Solaris’ (1972)
“We don’t want other worlds. We want mirrors.” Solaris is another reflective, psychological sci-fi masterpiece, this time from legendary Soviet director Andrei Tarkovsky. A psychologist named Kris Kelvin (Donatas Banionis) is sent to a space station orbiting a mysterious planet that appears to manifest physical embodiments of the crew’s memories. There, Kelvin confronts a version of his deceased wife (Natalya Bondarchuk), forcing him to grapple with guilt, grief, and even the nature of reality.
In this regard, the planet itself is less a setting than a catalyst, forcing characters to deal with unresolved emotions. It’s a clever inversion, replacing the genre’s usual focus on exploration, discovery, and external conflict with an inner reckoning defined by distorted memories and resurfacing trauma. The dialogue is philosophical, too, often reflecting on the limits of human understanding and the desire for connection. In the end, Solaris is science fiction as a mechanism for introspection.
3
‘Arrival’ (2016)
“If you could see your whole life from start to finish, would you change things?” While it lacks the grandeur of Dune, Arrival is Denis Villeneuve‘s deeper project when it comes to theme and psychology. Amy Adams carries most of it single-handedly as linguist Louise Banks, who is recruited to communicate with extraterrestrial visitors who have arrived on Earth. She slowly, painstakingly begins to understand their language, at the same time experiencing time in a fundamentally different way, altering her perception of life itself. In the process, a first-contact story turns into an exploration of language, time, and choice.
The movie has a lot to say about loss and acceptance, in particular. The emotional core is Louise’s relationship with her daughter. Cleverly, what initially appears to be backstory is eventually revealed to be something else entirely. As a result, Arrival‘s central question isn’t “Why are the aliens here?” but “Would you choose love if you knew it would end in loss?”
2
‘Children of Men’ (2006)
“Even if they discover the cure for infertility, it doesn’t mean the world will be saved.” In Children of Men, a disillusioned man named Theo (Clive Owen) is tasked with protecting a miraculously pregnant woman (Clare-Hope Ashitey) in a world where humanity has become infertile. Bereft of a future, society is collapsing into nihilism and violence, and the characters’ journey becomes a fragile thread of hope.
Theo himself mirrors this dystopia: at the start, he’s an empty person who has lost everything. In other words, Theo does not begin as a hero — he’s reluctant, self-interested, emotionally detached, and cynical. The real narrative is his slow re-engagement with the world, moving from indifference to responsibility, from survival to sacrifice. The film’s long takes and immersive cinematography place the viewer directly inside the action, but it is the character development that lingers. Theo begins as a passive observer and gradually becomes someone willing to act, driven by the possibility of renewal.
1
‘Alien’ (1979)
“In space no one can hear you scream.” The crew of a commercial spaceship responds to a distress signal, only to encounter a deadly extraterrestrial organism that begins to hunt them one by one. While it may seem odd at first to call Alien a character-driven movie, since so much of its power stems from creature design and masterful horror storytelling, a big part of why the film is iconic is thanks to the character of Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver). She’s a fantastic protagonist: resourceful and tough as nails, but also real and empathetic and anchored by unyielding principles.
Ripley’s not superhuman, but she does have a remarkable ability to adapt and keep her wits about her under pressure. Her fierceness makes her a match for even a monster as formidable as the xenomorph. The movie may start as an ensemble piece, driven by a collection of colorful and contrasting personalities, but it gradually centers on Ripley. In short, she’s one of the genre’s greatest heroes.

There’s Only 1 Drama Show You Need to Watch in April
This month, the season 3 premiere of Euphoria finally debuts on HBO and HBO Max after a too-long five-year hiatus.
If you still haven’t caught up on the provocative, highly memeable show, you’ve still got time to binge all sixteen of its provocative episodes.
For the uninformed, the HBO show follows the teenagers at East Highland High School in California, as they navigate sex, drugs, alcohol, friendship, cheating, betrayal and not much else.
The show stars Zendaya, Sydney Sweeney, Jacob Elordi and Hunter Schafer.
Watch With Us explains why you have to check out this controversial pop culture phenomenon before it concludes this spring.
The Plotlines Are Absurd, Obscene — and Addictive
The central narrative of Euphoria is driven by Rue (Zendaya), a teenage drug addict who’s been struggling with addiction since the death of her father from cancer. Season 1 kicks off with Rue’s recent release from rehab, and she makes it clear to the audience, as our omniscient narrator, that she has no plans of staying clean. While Rue dips her toes back into opiate abuse, she becomes head-over-heels infatuated with new student Jules (Schafer), a trans girl who frequents one-night stands with older men — including the father (Eric Dane) of East Highland’s football star, Nate Jacobs (Elordi).
Nate and Maddie Perez (Alexa Demie) are in an emotionally abusive relationship, while Maddie’s best friend, the highly sexual and emotional Cassie Howard (Sydney Sweeney), pursues a relationship with college freshman Chris McKay (Algee Smith). Their other friend, Kat Hernandez (Barbie Ferreira), decides to embrace body positivity and her sexuality by becoming a camgirl. Various plot threads in season 1 of Euphoria involve: micro-penises, sexual blackmail, domestic abuse, pedophilia, fentanyl abuse, public masturbation, kidney infections and murder, and that isn’t even the half of it. Criticisms against Euphoria have concerned such explicitly gratuitous narratives, but one thing will always be true: the people want to watch them.
‘Euphoria’ Launched the Careers of 2026’s Leading Stars

Euphoria served as the jumping-off point for much of its core cast. While Zendaya was probably the biggest name of the high school characters at the time, she has since been matched by Elordi, Sweeney and Schafer. From his imposing, genuinely terrifying performance as Nate Jacobs, Elordi was cast in Deep Water opposite Ana De Armas and Ben Affleck, indie film The Sweet East and eventually as Elvis Presley in Sofia Coppola‘s Priscilla. While post-Priscilla Elordi made his mark in Saltburn, Oh, Canada and On Swift Horses, it was on the set of Priscilla that Elordi was recommended to Guillermo del Toro to take on his Academy Award-nominated performance as Frankenstein’s Monster.
Sweeney, too, has had quite a buzzy post-Euphoria career (and not always for the best reasons), starring in movies like The Housemaid, Immaculate, Madame Web and Anyone But You. Meanwhile, Schafer has become a major face for transgender representation in Hollywood, appearing in The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, Cuckoo and Kinds of Kindness. It’s undeniable that whatever you think of the quality of Euphoria, it served as a crucial breeding ground for top young Hollywood talent doing some of their best work. And while well-known, Zendaya further proved her acting prowess beyond her Disney Channel years — for her performance as Rue, she clinched two Primetime Emmys and a Golden Globe.
The Filmmaking Is Highly Stylized and Ambitious
Say what you will about Euphoria show runner, creator and writer Sam Levinson‘s screenwriting abilities, the man knows how to keep things unique with the camera and editing. The series employs numerous creative gimmicks: fourth wall-breaking sequences, animated sequences, dance numbers, dream sequences and more. Ultimately, the creatives behind the show go out of their way to make Euphoria hyper-stylized in just about every filmmaking aspect, from the directing and costume design to the sets and editing. The show is meant to evoke the emotional reality of the characters’ inner perspectives, which doesn’t necessarily reflect objective reality.
While the first season was shot on an Arri Alexa 65 digital camera, the second season and the two specials were shot on 35mm Kodak film stock, giving the visual quality a nostalgic texture. To communicate the emotional states of the characters, lighting is very intentionally deployed, with blues and purples conjuring a frantic atmosphere, and greens and yellows evoking distress. Energetic camera movements create a kinetic fluidity to the show through frequent whip pans and tracking shots. And, of course, the costume design is one of the most memorable aspects of the filmmaking, with highly meticulous outfits catered to the personalities of each character — in particular, Maddie’s detailed and eccentric makeup designs are to die for.

‘Marshals’ Digs Deeper Into Taylor Sheridan’s Past by Channelling ‘Sons of Anarchy’ in the Latest Episode
Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers for Marshals Season 1, Episode 6.Riding off last week’s cliffhanger, Marshals continues to push Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes) and his team into the fire as they search for the missing Native girls who have been stolen off Broken Rock. But if last week’s episode, “Lost Girl,” hoped to channel Wind River, this week’s adventure claws further back into Taylor Sheridan‘s filmography to his Sons of Anarchy days. Only, we would have you remember that “Out of the Shadows” is still a product of network television, and thus is nowhere near as gratuitous as the FX classic. If anything, it only teases us with the freedom of cable while reminding us firmly that Marshals airs not on the Paramount Network, but on CBS.
“Out of the Shadows” Continues Where Last Week Left Off
This week’s Marshals begins with a flashback to a year ago. It’s here that we see that first moment when Kayce and Tate (Brecken Merrill) learn that Monica has succumbed to her battle with cancer. Kayce is given her necklace by a nurse and does his best to comfort his son before “Out of the Shadows” pivots back to the present day. Now, Tate rides up to his father and berates him for not saving Hayley Charlo (Isabel DeRoy-Olson) last week — and he won’t be the only one. Sadly, Kayce has no news on her whereabouts, which irks Tate even more. Of course, he’s not the only one irritated with Kayce.
Back at Marshals HQ, Andrea Cruz (Ash Santos) and Pete “Cal” Calvin (Logan Marshall-Green) discuss the latest updates on the case before Miles Kittle (Tatanka Means) wanders in. It turns out that he has been (understandably) putting off contacting Ava’s mother, Sera (Otgadahe Whitman-Fox), about the girl’s death, which they learned of from Hayley. But when Kayce walks in, all Miles can think about is giving him a hard time for letting the girl go. Thankfully, the Dutton heir is saved when Belle Skinner (Arielle Kebbel) enters with an update. It turns out that Kurt Bludsoe, the man trafficking the girls, had visited a mechanic named Eli Craig right before the Marshals took him out — a mechanic who may be in on the whole conspiracy.
But before Miles can get excited, he and Cal head to the Rez to give the overdue notification to Ava’s mother. Cal tells Miles that his first notification nearly broke him, but that it’s a part of the job they simply have to do. Yet, before they’re able to speak with Sera, they are ushered into chairman Thomas Rainwater’s (Gil Birmingham) office, who demands to learn of their progress on the case. When he discovers that Ava has been killed, he’s heartbroken. “Tragedy is one of the few things that Broken Rock has in abundance,” echoes Mo (Mo Brings Plenty). But when Miles tells Rainwater that Kayce let Hayley go after finding her, the chairman’s blood begins to boil. Soon after, Sara arrives, and Miles does his best to relay what they learned about Ava to her, only he breaks down before he can. Cal finishes the notification for him as Rainwater and Mo comfort the grieving mother.
Meanwhile, Belle and Cruz’s research into Craig has proven to be fruitful after all. It turns out that Craig was the last link to Bludsoe before the marshals caught up with him, making his garage the most likely place for the girls to have either been transferred to another vehicle or stashed for the time being. Using a security camera from across the street, they discover that someone in a white van wearing an Iron Sentinels Motor Club jacket drove off soon after — seemingly with the girls inside. “They’re ultra-violent and highly organized,” Belle tells Cal about the biker gang. “If they can profit from it, they’ll do it.” We also learn a harrowing statistic about missing Native American women, as Kayce learns from an analyst that 43 girls have been reported missing from Montana-based reservations over the last two years.
Kayce and the Marshals Head to a Biker Gang Rally
The best way to find out more about the biker gang is surveillance, so Cruz, Miles, and Kayce head to the Iron Sentinels’ local bar. As they wait, Cruz uncharacteristically opens up a little about her personal life, revealing that until she acknowledged her grief, she wasn’t able to shake the pain of losing her father. As she says this, Kayce fumbles about with Monica’s necklace, seemingly absorbing some of her experiential wisdom. Interrupting their therapy session, Miles notes that the best way to watch the biker gang is to draw them out so that they can actually scour the premises for any useful intel. When Cruz asks how, Kayce reveals his inner Dutton by “going after what they love.” Pouring gasoline on their nicely lined-up bikes, Kayce lights them all on fire. The men find their way outside as Cruz and Miles storm the bar in search of the girls. However, they’re nowhere to be found.
Cruz clones a cell phone she finds on the table, which suggests that the girls may be at an Iron Sentinels rally in the Milk River Valley area, which will bring in chapters throughout the country. According to the texts, a club “nomad” called “Brimstone,” real name Keith Stelton (Adam Dunnells), is set to bring the “entertainment.” While it seems like a no-brainer, with Cruz and Belle on board to reactivate one of the latter’s old cover identities to make contact with an old, well, contact, Cal would prefer a state of federal assistance. Of course, they don’t get any, and so, instead, they convince him to use some of their captured meth from a previous case as a lure to bring in her old contact Squirrel. Instead of gearing up for the mission, Kayce arrives home at East Camp to find Rainwater and Mo waiting for him. Rainwater pushes Kayce about letting Hayley go, but he’s already beating himself enough. After their brief (and toothless) tussle, Kayce rides out to Monica’s grave site to find Tate sleeping beside it. “I came out here hoping mom would cheer me up, she usually does,” he says, and though Kayce tries to fill in, Hayley’s predicament has soured his mood. Tate believes that they’ve both disappointed Monica.
Yellowstone Spin-Off ‘Marshals’ is Going “Full Dutton” This Week [Exclusive]
The newest U.S. Marshal is badly outnumbered in this week’s episode.
When Kayce returns to HQ, Cal gives Belle the green light when she confirms that her contact, Squirrel (Derrick Aguis), will be at the rally — and it isn’t long before the marshals make it there. Stashed in a mobile HQ in a small trailer, the team prepares for the operation. Belle transforms herself with an intense makeover as “Brandy,” and uses her new appearance (and personality) to waltz back into Squirrel’s good-graces. When she offers him the meth as a deal, he decides to introduce her to Brimstone, who is interested in moving the product with another shipment set to go out that afternoon to Calgary. But, as the team quickly put together, the moment that his shipment crosses the Canadian border, the girls are as good as gone.
Unfortunately for Belle, Brimstone leaves her alone with another biker (Tim Sitarz) — and things get dicey pretty fast. He recalls having seen her several weeks back at a poker table, with blonde hair and calling herself “Turek.” Kayce knows that her cover is blown, and he goes out to intercept the biker, who now believes Belle to be an infiltrator. Things get especially heated when Squirrel arrives, and Kayce shows up at the eleventh hour — killing the man who tried to harm his teammate.
This Week’s ‘Marshals’ Ends With Kayce Finally Accepting His Grief
When Squirrel reveals that Brimstone is moving product in a truck out back, Belle and Kayce close in on the Iron Sentinel nomad. At the same time, Cal, Miles, and Cruz boldly gear up and head into the middle of the action. Somehow, they manage to make their way through all these uber-violent bikers without so much as a slash or a cut, and, frankly, the whole thing is a bit hard to believe. But as a firefight erupts, Kayce and the team take out Brimstone before they get into the back of his van and begin opening the containers in the back. While they’re disheartened at first to find only drugs, the rest of the containers are full of the abducted girls, including Hayley. It’s a happy ending after all.
In the aftermath, Miles passes on Rainwater’s thanks to the team as Belle does her best to shed her biker persona. Earlier in the episode, Cal asked her how her husband would feel about her going undercover again, something she told him was nowhere near his business. But after Belle offers to be his wingman in trying to reconnect with his daughter, Madison (Morgan Lindholm), at the bar, it appears that she may have some sort of interest in him beyond friendship. At first, we thought that Marshals was setting Kayce and Belle up to be the show’s power couple, but now we’re not so sure.
But that’s not where things conclude this week. After a heart-to-heart between father and son where Kayce informs Tate of their success, “Out of the Shadows” concludes with the Duttons returning to the Rez for Monica’s remembrance ceremony. Upon reuniting with Monica’s grandfather, Felix Long (Rudy Ramos), Kayce and Tate stand to honor their lost loved one — and the rest of Kayce’s new team stands beside him in support. During the ceremony itself, Kayce finally offers his son Monica’s necklace after all this time. “Been clinging to it since mom left, maybe it’s time I start letting go,” he says.

- Rudy Ramos was a welcome surprise.
- In what world would that biker gang have not ganged up on the marshals in the middle of their rally?
- I get that Kayce made a potentially bad call, but questioning his loyalties to finding the missing girls is a major stretch.

HBO Max Can’t Contain Dwayne Johnson’s $962 Million Fantasy Action Juggernaut
On July 10, 2026, the long-awaited live-action Moana remake will set sail across the world and into theaters. Recently, the release of the official trailer gave fans their first glimpse at Dwayne Johnson‘s physical embodiment of Maui, following his voice work in the animated version. As well as this, the trailer also introduced fans fully to Catherine Laga’aia as the titular daughter of Motunui’s chief, with the stunning visual landscape crafted evident from just a short trailer. At a time when reboots, remakes, and live-action adaptations are so popular, Moana looks like one of the best.
Excitingly, this isn’t the only big-franchise entry Johnson is delivering in 2026, as it was recently confirmed that Jumanji 3, a sequel to Jumanji: The Next Level, had officially wrapped filming. It was then confirmed late last month that the threequel had been pushed back, moving from a December 11 theatrical release to December 25. Johnson will once again be joined by the trio of Kevin Hart, Karen Gillan, and Jack Black, with Danny DeVito, Nick Jonas, Marin Hinkle, Bebe Neuwirth, Lamorne Morris, and Rhys Darby also set to return to the cast. Both Dan Hildebrand and Jack Jewkes will join as new faces.
Ahead of this exciting threequel, the most successful film from the franchise has landed a spot on the global streaming charts. Released in 2017, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle was a huge hit in theaters, scoring a $962 million global haul against a reported budget of just $90 million. Fans had waited over two decades for the film, which served as a sequel to the 1995 favorite starring Robin Williams and Kirsten Dunst. At the time of writing, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle is one of the ten most-streamed movies on HBO Max worldwide.

How Did Critics Respond to ‘Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle’?
Not just a smash hit at the box office, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle also received a positive response from critics. On review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, the movie earned a “certified fresh” rating of 77%, with the consensus on the site reading, “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle uses a charming cast and a humorous twist to offer an undemanding yet solidly entertaining update on its source material.” Audiences agreed, awarding an 87% score that is 24% higher than the 1995 original.

Why Taylor Swift Allegedly Feels ‘Relief’ After Blake Lively’s Loss
Taylor Swift allegedly feels “relieved” after Blake Lively‘s lawsuit against Justin Baldoni suffered a major setback this week.
The chart-topping pop star is preparing for her wedding to NFL star Travis Kelce and seemingly doesn’t want the case to drag on until her big day.
Taylor Swift and Blake Lively’s relationship has been strained since the singer got dragged into the actress’s legal battle against Justin Baldoni, with several of their text messages being exposed.
Why Taylor Swift Feels ‘Relieved’ After Blake Lively’s Legal Loss

Sources close to Swift are claiming that the “Blank Space” singer is breathing a tentative sigh of relief after Lively suffered a major setback in her long-running legal battle with Justin Baldoni.
The pair used to be best pals but seemingly fell out after Swift was named in Lively’s ongoing legal battle with her “It Ends With Us” costar, with their private conversation also revealing that the singer allegedly referred to Baldoni as a “b-tch.”
Now that a federal judge has dismissed 10 of Lively’s 13 claims against Baldoni, sources told Rob Shuter’s #ShutterScoop that Swift sees it as a welcome development and secretly hopes it’s the beginning of the end.
“It’s a huge relief,” an insider told the journalist. “This case just got dramatically weaker.”
The Singer Wants The Case ‘Wrapped Up Before Her Summer Wedding’

Reports are rife suggesting Lively doesn’t plan to back down despite the loss and wants her day in court.
After the judge dismissed most of her claims, she’s left with just three allegations to prove, namely, breach of contract, retaliation, and aiding and abetting in retaliation, which will all proceed to a civil trial in New York on 18 May.
However, reports suggest Swift wonders why she’s not looking to settle and thinks the case shouldn’t have been dragged on for this long.
“No one understands why Blake isn’t trying to settle,” the source said. “From the outside, it looks like she’s already lost.”
The insider went further to explain that the Grammy winner doesn’t want to have anything to do with the case as her summer wedding to Kansas City Chiefs star, Travis Kelce, draws near.
“She wants this wrapped up before her summer wedding,” they shared. “The timing couldn’t be worse.”
Taylor Swift’s Messages With Blake Lively Were Unsealed

Back in January, Swift’s private texts with Lively were unsealed, seemingly confirming Baldoni’s claims that the actress tried to use her celebrity power and contacts to pressure him into accepting the changes she made to the “It Ends With Us” script.
In one text exchange, Lively asked the “Bad Blood” singer to endorse a script she came up with for the film “even without having read it,” Baldoni’s legal team claimed, per People Magazine. Swift then allegedly replied, “I’ll do anything for you !!”
However, Lively’s team said the text lacked context and pointed to her deposition in which the actress said she “sent Taylor the script on her way to my apartment because Justin was still there, and I asked her to read them. I told her she didn’t have to, I didn’t want her to feel pressured to do that, but I hoped that she would.”
The Former Pals Berated Justin Baldoni In A Text Exchange, Branding The Director A ‘Clown’

In another text exchange that was exposed, Lively referred to Baldoni as a “clown” and a “doofus,” while Swift allegedly called him a “b-tch.”
The insider who spoke to Shuter explained that things have now changed between the former close pals, as the fallout has been real.
“Taylor has nothing to do with this. She was supporting a friend — that’s it,” the insider said. “This has affected people around Blake, and some feel she didn’t fully consider that.”
“There’s a sense this didn’t need to go this far,” they added. “That ego took over.”
Taylor Swift Likely Won’t Invite Blake Lively To Her Wedding

Meanwhile, Swift is reportedly lurking and observing how things go from here as she doesn’t want to be involved in the case again, at least not until things are completely over.
A source told Shuter that she’s “watching everything” closely because “the last thing she wants is her name or her texts dragged into this again.”
Insiders have previously called attention to the sour state of their relationship after it was revealed that the “Another Simple Favor” actress and her husband, Ryan Reynolds, won’t be invited to Swift’s summer wedding to Kelce.
“They are not invited. Period,” a source claimed. “Taylor wants a drama-free day, and she no longer trusts Blake or Ryan.”
Another insider shared at the time that Swift concluded a long time ago on not inviting the couple, adding that she felt “exposed and violated.”
“There’s been an emotional gap for a long time,” the source added. “Rebuilding trust doesn’t feel possible right now.”

Ashley Iaconetti Has ‘No Shame’ Putting Her Kids on Leashes
Ashley Iaconetti has a tried-and-true method to conquering solo mom outings with two kids — no matter what the critics say.
“Jared [Haibon] went to visit a friend in the hospital in Boston today,” Iaconetti, 38, wrote via her Instagram Stories on Saturday, April 4, referring to her husband. “I thought, ‘Let me take the kids to the Boston aquarium while he’s there.’ I do not recommend doing this 😂.”
Iaconetti and Haibon, 37, have been married since 2019 and share sons Dawson, 4, and Hayden, 20 months. During Saturday’s aquarium visit, Iaconetti put Hayden on a so-called leash, connected to her wrist. She also put an AirTag on Dawson in case she needed to track his whereabouts via her smartphone if he ran out of eyesight.
“I have no shame in my leash game,” she wrote, adding a “Safety Over Shame” hashtag.
Iaconetti also took her boys to Chuck E. Cheese during Haibon’s hospital visit.
“Pro tip of parents: Chuck E. Cheese. It is still the best,” she added in a follow-up Saturday post. “Pizza, wings, games, little rides, trampolines and play zone all in one. Unlike a lot of play zones, everything is monitored and it’s small enough to keep your eyes on your kids without having to crawl in tubes yourself.”
She continued, “The silver membership we have is $12 a month and, basically, gives you unlimited games every time you go, and you can go as much as you want.”

While Iaconetti is embracing mom life, she’s also stepping back into the limelight. The Bachelor Nation alum is among the stars on Bravo’s new series The Real Housewives of Rhode Island. (Iaconetti moved to Rhode Island, Haibon’s home state, after they said “I do.”)
“Ashley probably isn’t the first person you think of when thinking of a ‘Housewife.’ However, when I think about it, I actually think she is,” Haibon wrote via Instagram on Thursday, April 2, celebrating his wife’s new series. “Ashley is hardworking, beautiful, intelligent, thoughtful, a supportive wife and the most loving mother any child can ask for. I see her put her family first every single day.”
He added at the time, “She might not be confrontational, she might not flip tables but she is strong, diligent and wears her heart on her sleeve. Ashley I is a badass, and when I think of this franchise, I think of badass women. Because of this, I think Ashley will fit right in.”
RHORI premiered on Thursday, chronicling Iaconetti’s integration into the Ocean State’s social scene alongside fellow cast members Alicia Carmody, Rosie DiMare, Liz McGraw, Rulla Nehme Pontarelli, Kelsey Swanson and Jo-Ellen Tiberi.
The Real Housewives of Rhode Island airs Sundays at 9 p.m. ET on Bravo and streams the next day on Peacock.

7 Upcoming Horror Shows You Cannot Miss
Horror TV is definitely having a moment. Sadly, though, between endless reboots and spin-offs, it’s getting harder to tell which projects are actually worth paying attention to and which ones are just riding the wave. Unfortunately, even some of the more original concepts fail to stick the landing because they still rely on the same old tropes that viewers have honestly grown tired of at this point.
Thankfully, though, this year’s horror lineup is surprisingly stacked with a good mix of reimaginings and unique stories that feel genuinely exciting. To cut through the noise, though, here is a list of upcoming horror shows that just cannot be missed.
7
‘Carrie’
October 2026
Stephen King’s 1974 novel Carrie has seen several adaptations over the years. However, Mike Flanagan’s upcoming take on it definitely justifies revisiting the story once again. Flanagan is the undisputed king of TV horror with shows like The Haunting of Hill House and Midnight Mass under his belt. That makes him the perfect director to reimagine Carrie with a character-driven, in-depth approach that focuses on the emotion beneath the horror. The series will follow Summer H. Howell as Carrie White, a socially isolated teenager raised by her extremely religious and abusive mother, Margaret (Samantha Sloyan). However, her life takes a turn when she develops terrifying telekinetic powers right when she is in the middle of an awful bullying scandal.
Flagan’s version of Carrie is expected to portray Carrie’s journey as a coming-of-age tragedy that’s only heightened by the supernatural horror elements of the story. The horror here won’t just come from what Carrie can do, but also what has been done to her. The series is currently slated to premiere in October 2026, right in time for spooky season. At a time when audiences are frankly getting a little tired of reboots, Carrie has a real chance of changing the game by giving the story a new sense of depth and nuance.

Untitled ‘The Conjuring’ Series
2026
The Conjuring universe has already proven itself as one of the most successful horror franchises of all time, so it was only a matter of time before it moved to TV. An untitled The Conjuring series is now in development at HBO Max and is set to expand the world established in the films. The show is a continuation of the story rather than a reboot or retelling, which immediately gives the audience a reason to tune in. Details about the plot are still under wraps, but Nancy Won is on board as showrunner while Peter Cameron and Cameron Squires serve as writers.
This shift in format could be exactly what the horror franchise needs at the moment. The nine films have largely thrived on contained cases and traditional horror storytelling featuring plot twists and jump scares. However, a series allows for a deeper dive into the Warrens’ legacy or perhaps what happens to it after they choose to retire in The Conjuring: Last Rites (2025). The series is expected to be released in 2026, but an exact date has not been announced yet.
5
‘Widow’s Bay’
April 29, 2026
Apple TV has been delivering some of the most unique shows on streaming in recent years, and Widow’s Bay will be no exception. The horror-comedy series, created by Katie Dippold and directed by Hiro Murai, is set in a remote New England town that might be cursed. The story follows Mayor Tom Loftis (Matthew Rhys), a skeptic determined to revive the struggling town, even as the locals insist something is deeply wrong. This tension between disbelief and a sense of creeping dread makes the show’s premise so interesting.
Widow’s Peak will lean into familiar small-town horror territory and is already being compared to Twin Peaks-style storytelling, where the tone is constantly shifting. The upcoming series premieres on April 29, 2026, and will feature 10 episodes where the central mystery will slowly unravel. It might not be the most mainstream horror title on the slate, but it’s definitely one to watch out for.
4
‘Crystal Lake’
2026
Crystal Lake is another upcoming series that will revive a beloved horror franchise. The horror show will serve as a prequel to the original 1980 Friday the 13th and shift the focus away from the violence and gore to the actual origin of Pamela Vorhees herself. Linda Cardellini headlines Crystal Lake as Pamela, a grieving mother who descends into absolute madness after her son, Jason, drowned at Camp Crystal Lake after being bullied by the other campers. Longtime fans of the franchise already know that Pamela blames the tragedy on the camp counselors who were supposed to be watching him. However, the series will explore the events leading up to young Jason (Callum Vinson)’s death while grounding the story in the very specific time and mindset of the ‘70s.
There’s no denying that the premise of this is rooted in familiar territory, but it will take a far more ambitious creative direction. Crystal Lake has been pitched as a paranoid thriller that will unpack Pamela’s grief and paranoia on a whole new level. The show will feature its fair share of slasher moments, but the context behind them is what will give them their true weight. Crystal Lake has been through quite a few issues behind-the-scenes with the original showrunner, Bryan Fuller, exiting due to creative differences. However, the series is now helmed by Brad Caleb Kane, whose approach leans heavily into character and atmosphere. An official premiere date hasn’t been confirmed yet, but the prequel series is expected to arrive sometime in 2026.
3
‘Hostel’
Late 2026
The Hostel franchise has been met with mixed reception due to its “torture horror” roots. The original movie, released in 2005, follows a group of backpackers who are lured into a nightmarish underground network where wealthy elites pay to torture unsuspecting tourists. The film’s graphic violence is definitely still controversial, but it was a pop-culture-defining moment for early 2000s horror. The upcoming Peacock series marks a revival of Eli Roth’s franchise and is expected to take a present-day approach to the original concept instead of simply rehashing the films. Paul Giamatti is set to star in a leading role. However, details about the characters and the plot remain under wraps.
The upcoming Hostel series has the potential to expand the lore of the Elite Hunting Club beyond just a single location and focus on the people who run it. The series can still lean into the graphic violence of its predecessors, but it might benefit from taking a more psychological approach with its story. Hostel definitely has the potential to reinvent itself for a new audience if it manages to balance its signature shock value with something more substantial. The show does not have a confirmed release date yet, but it is expected to premiere in late 2026, possibly around Halloween.
2
Untitled Netflix Newfoundland Series
Late 2026
This entry on the list might not have a title, but its premise has all the makings of a horror hit. Netflix’s untitled series based on Newfoundland will be set in a remote coastal town where a mysterious sea creature begins terrorizing the community. The story will follow a tough fisherman, played by Josh Hartnett, who has to fight for his and his family’s survival. The cast also includes Mackenzie Davis and Stranger Things star Charlie Heaton.
This won’t be a typical creature feature, though, because the show is meant to be a character-driven drama about resilience and community. The Newfoundland setting is also of key importance here, since the culture and dialect will also have a huge impact on the story. The series will have a limited, six-episode run and has the potential to balance spectacle with a story that feels intimate. An official release date has not been announced yet, but given that production is already underway, a late 2026 debut might be in the books.
1
‘The Texas Chainsaw Massacre’ Series
TBA
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974) has left a mark on the horror genre like no other. Instead of relying on supernatural scares, the film’s sense of fear is grounded in something disturbingly real, and that makes all the difference. A24 is leaning into that same identity with a new TV series that’s currently in development. The upcoming show promises to dig deeper into Leatherface and his cannibalistic family’s origins. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre TV adaptation is not a remake, but instead, is being positioned as a long-form exploration of the franchise’s mythology.
JT Mollner has joined the project as writer and director, while Roy Lee and Glen Powell serve as producers alongside Kim Henkel, who co-created the original film. What makes the series so exciting is how The Texas Chainsaw Massacre has always hinted at a larger, more disturbing world beyond the immediate violence the audience sees. The series will have room to unpack all of that, explore the dynamics of the family and the environment that shaped them. The A24 series doesn’t have an official release window yet.

Taylor Frankie Paul Posts Singing Shower Video With Daughter
Taylor Frankie Paul is seemingly committed to “just keep swimming” alongside her daughter Indy amid her most recent domestic violence allegations and custody dispute.
“Just keep swimming… with some singing,” Paul, 31, wrote via Instagram on Saturday, April 4, alongside a video showing the reality TV star singing in the shower — fully clothed — as her daughter, 8, danced in front of the bathroom mirror.
“My mini with sass,” Paul wrote over the video, which was seemingly taken by her daughter via an iPhone. (Paul also shares Ocean, 5, with her ex-husband Tate Paul, and Ever, 2, with her ex boyfriend Dakota Mortensen.)
While The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives star received a fair amount of criticism in the comments section for how she was dancing in front of her daughter, plenty of fans offered her praise and support amid her ongoing legal troubles with Mortensen.
“This is everything. Keep singing, Taylor!” one fan wrote.
“Remember no matter how hard life gets remember you got whatever life throws at you!” another commented. “Be stronger work on yourself and come back on top!!”
“So happy to see you slowly coming back,” another added.
According to a report from the Draper City Police Department in Utah obtained by Us Weekly, authorities opened a domestic assault investigation into the former couple on February 23. Mortensen accused Taylor of “scratching” him and physically assaulting him during the alleged dispute.
Mortensen later claimed in the report that there were “two incidents of physical assault involving ‘grabbing, scratching, shoving, and striking’ at the hands of Taylor. Per the same report, authorities have opened a second investigation, which includes an additional accusation of domestic violence in the presence of a child. Draper PD told People no charges have been filed.
Taylor has denied the allegations, and alleged that Mortensen has been abusive towards her. He has also denied the allegations against him. According to documents obtained by Us on March 20, Mortensen was awarded temporary custody of Ever and a temporary protective order against Taylor amid the domestic violence allegations.
Days later, video of a 2023 domestic dispute between Taylor and Mortensen surfaced, in which Taylor could be seen physically assaulting and throwing chairs at Mortensen in the presence of her daughter. She was subsequently arrested and charged with aggravated assault, two counts of domestic violence in the presence of a child, child abuse with injury and criminal mischief.
Taylor pleaded guilty to aggravated assault in exchange for the other charges to be dismissed.
Hours after the video surfaced, ABC announced that Taylor’s The Bachelorette season was canceled ahead of its scheduled March 22 premiere.
“In light of the newly released video just surfaced today, we have made the decision to not move forward with the new season of The Bachelorette at this time, and our focus is on supporting the family,” a Disney Entertainment spokesperson told Us in a statement at the time.
“Taylor is very grateful for ABC’s support as she prioritizes her family’s safety and security,” a rep for Taylor said in a statement to Us, reacting to the decision. “After years of silently suffering extensive mental and physical abuse as well as threats of retaliation, Taylor is finally gaining the strength to face her accuser and taking steps to ensure that she and her children are protected from any further harm.”
If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic violence, please call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233 for confidential support.

‘Reacher’s Season 4 Return Proves Prime Video Has Massive Plans for the Franchise
2026 is shaping up to be the biggest year yet for the Reacher television franchise, as fans will be treated to both the return of Alan Ritchson‘s titular action hero in his own series as well as the release of the first-ever Reacher spin-off, Neagley, starring Reacher series alum Maria Sten. Additionally, recent comments from Ritchson tease that Prime Video clearly has more in store for the future of its biggest action franchise.
‘Reacher’ Season 4 Will Be Its Best and “Most Gripping,” According to Alan Ritchson
While Reacher Season 4 doesn’t have a release date yet, Ritchson previously confirmed in an interview with Collider that it would be dropping later this year on Prime Video, additionally promising that the show’s upcoming fourth season would be “the best season we’ve had yet.” It’s certainly a bold claim, as the last three seasons have been praised by both critics and viewers.
As if to double down on his earlier comments, Ritchson later revealed his official wrap on post-production of Season 4 in a March 25 Instagram post: “Here we are, in the ADR booth for the very last time for Season 4 of Reacher. There it is; we are dunzos. This thing is gonna be hitting airwaves very soon.” To caption the video itself, the star wrote, “This is, without a doubt, the most gripping season yet. I think we hit our stride. Firing on all cylinders… as it were.” Based on Ritchson’s statements, it looks like Reacher fanatics are in for quite the ride with Season 4.
‘Reacher’ Season 4 Will Have More Action Than Ever
Longtime Reacher viewers are no strangers to the show’s unique brand of action, and it looks like the series is stepping up the action quotient for Season 4. During a November 2025 interview with ScreenRant, Ritchson revealed that Season 4 set a new series record for the volume of action scenes that were filmed.
The star’s comments are a bit surprising given that Reacher Season 4 is based on the book Gone Tomorrow, which is more of a cerebral detective story than an action-thriller. However, during the same interview, Ritchson spoke about anticipating “fight fatigue,” something he and the production team were mindful of for the new season, and added that Season 4’s fight sequences happen “all for good reason,” emphasizing that any stunts are designed with a narrative-driven intent to serve a larger purpose for character and story. In Ritchson’s words:
“You got to be invested in feeling for these characters and the reason for what they’re fighting for, and I think we’ve done a really good job of that.”
Ritchson Is Also Reprising His Role as Jack Reacher in ‘Neagley’
Another big Reacher release for 2026 is the Neagley spin-off, in which Maria Sten will take center stage in the new series that will finally reveal more about one of Reacher’s most dedicated allies — not to mention, Ritchson will once again reprise his role as Jack Reacher. Fans are used to seeing Neagley in a supporting role in the flagship series, but Ritchson’s guest-starring appearance will serve as an inversion of the characters’ usual dynamic, with Neagley now finding herself in the position to investigate the shocking death of a close friend.
Neagley also provides the opportunity for the Reacher franchise to reveal one of its longest mysteries in depicting the titular character’s mysterious backstory. Reacher fans have noticed that Neagley showcases extreme haphephobia, a fear of touching, which is consistent with the character from Lee Child‘s novels. However, as the author explained in a February 2025 interview with The Wrap, he previously shied away from revealing more about Neagley in his books, wanting the character to retain a sense of mystique for readers. That all changes with Neagley, as Reacher showrunner Nick Santora is working on the spin-off with Child’s approval and oversight.
Needless to say, the hype and anticipation are building for both Reacher Season 4 and the series debut of Neagley. Hopefully, Prime Video begins rolling out the release details and marketing campaign soon, offering an even better sense of the bone-crunching, action-packed fun that fans can expect.

Margot Robbie’s 2025 Fantasy Flop Is Quietly Taking Over Streaming Worldwide
Following the global phenomenon that was Barbie in 2023, Margot Robbie was perhaps the most famous movie star in the world. A two-time Academy Award nominee whose filmography includes the likes of I, Tonya, The Wolf of Wall Street, and the most copied modern interpretation of Harley Quinn, it’s incredible to think that Robbie is still just getting started. However, since turning the iconic Barbie doll into her own three years ago, Robbie’s performances haven’t quite found the same success, most recently earning a mixed reception — albeit with a big box office triumph — in Wuthering Heights, the latest adaptation of Emily Brontë’s famous novel.
Before she starred alongside Jacob Elordi in the period drama, Robbie delivered one of the more disappointing efforts in her recent career in the fantasy romantic drama A Big Bold Beautiful Journey. Directed by Kogonada of After Yang fame, the film promised a clever trip through memory and trauma with two of the very best actors working today: Robbie and Colin Farrell. The film also featured a stellar supporting cast, including Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag), Hamish Linklater (Midnight Mass), Lily Rabe (American Horror Story), and Billy Magnussen (Lilo & Stitch).
Sadly, A Big Bold Beautiful Journey was one of the biggest flops of the year, earning just $20 million worldwide against a reported $45 million production budget, with a domestic haul of $6.6 million and a further $13.4 million from overseas markets, well below expectations. However, months later, the film has bounced back and is currently one of the ten most-streamed movies on HBO Max in the world.

Critics Were Left Frustrated by ‘A Big Bold Beautiful Journey’
Scoring just 37% from critics on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, one of Robbie’s worst scores to date, it’s safe to say that A Big Bold Beautiful Journey frustrated critics. In his review for Collider, Ross Bonaime wrote that the movie “occasionally works, but isn’t entirely as successful as one would hope,” adding, “The screenplay by Reiss is too eccentric and full of empty statements about life that result in the movie not working like it should. If you squint,” Bonaime said, “you can almost see how great this film could’ve been.”
A Big Bold Beautiful Journey is streaming on HBO Max. Stay tuned to Collider for more streaming stories.
