Work starts on new Aldi store in Commercial Street, Norton

An application, for an Aldi store in Commercial Street, was unanimously approved by members of the Thirsk and Malton Area Committee in September.

The site for the proposed new discount food store is partially within Norton Town Centre and has lain dormant for several years.

Clearance of the site is now underway, with the new store expected to open next year.

A spokesperson for Aldi previously said the store would help to regenerate and bring this sustainable site back into productive use and improve shopping choice for local residents.

“Aldi is proud to invest in local communities and believes that a new food store here will improve footfall in and around the area, alongside improvements to the sustainability of local shopping patterns.

“This scheme regenerates a disused site, improves shopping choice, creates new jobs for local people, involves £6m of investment and our intention is to start on site as quickly as possible and have the food store open and trading by the end of 2026.

“New positions will be targeted at local people via our work with organisations such as Job Centre Plus, with further jobs created during construction of the store and in the supply chain.

The spokesperson added: “Aldi is proud to invest in local communities and believes that a new food store here, will improve footfall in and around the area, alongside improvements to the sustainability of local shopping patterns.

“Ahead of submitting the application, Aldi launched a community consultation on the scheme and heard from over 500 residents in the local area who provided their views on the proposals.

“89% expressed their support for the plans, welcoming them as an effective use of a brownfield site, and were encouraged to see new investment into Norton. Residents also supported the creation of 40 new, full-time equivalent jobs as part of the development, which would be paid at industry-leading rates.”

“We are delighted to have received planning permission for our new store in Norton. Ever since our initial conversations with local residents and elected representatives, we have been encouraged by the high level of support for this proposal.

“We will look forward to being part of the community.”
