Girl, 9, with 'Rapunzel syndrome' rushed to A&E after 'tummy ache' found to be hairball 'eating through her stomach'

A YOUNG girl with ‘Rapunzel syndrome’ had to undergo a four-hour operation to remove a huge hairball that was “eating through her stomach”.

Sophia Goss began pulling out her hair and chewing on it when she was 18 months old as a “soothing” technique to help her fall asleep.

Mum Megan Sayce, 32, thought she had got her daughter to break her habit in just eight weeks by putting olive oil on the youngster’s locks.

However, Sophia, now nine, was rushed to hospital after passing out from the pain in her stomach.

She spent four hours in surgery and a further 10 days in hospital after medics removed a hairball “the size of her belly” that had created a hole in her stomach.

She was found to be battling Rapunzel syndrome – an extremely rare medical condition where the hair a person has eaten becomes tangled and trapped in their stomach.

Megan, from Lenwade, Norfolk, said: “It was scary. The hairball filled her whole stomach and had worn away the lining which meant her stomach contents were leaking into her body.

“She wasn’t allowed to eat or drink for seven days and was in the high dependency unit for seven of the 10 days she was in hospital.

“Six weeks before she had the operation, we had taken her to the doctors with stomach pain and they said it was her diet without examining her too much.

“They didn’t seem to have much awareness of what it could have been.”

Sophia began pulling out her hair when she was just a tot and had removed half of it before her parents could teach her to stop.

Emma, a shift manager at McDonald’s, said: “She would do it as she was falling asleep.

“She’d pull tufts out all the time, but the GP and health visitor didn’t really have any advice.

“I Googled it and managed to get her to stop in eight weeks.

“I put olive oil in her hair and got her some gloves for when she slept so she couldn’t pull it.

“Then when she was four years old she was very ill and threw up a hairball.

“We took her to a doctor but they didn’t really know what could stop it. She wasn’t pulling her hair as far as we could see.

“She eventually got better, wasn’t eating her hair and it was growing out nicely, so we didn’t think much of it.”

I’ve never heard my daughter scream in such pain. She said she felt like she was going to die

On New Year’s Eve 2018, Sophia was taken to A&E by her parents as they thought she had a stomach bug – until she cough up a hairball.

They were advised she had thrown it all up and there was nothing to worry about.

However, on December 12, 2023, Sophia woke up in tears, saying she felt like she was “going to die”.

Megan said: “I woke up at 4am and heard her crying – she said she felt like she was going to die, was throwing up and passed out.

“I’ve never heard her scream in such pain so we called the GP when they opened but they couldn’t fit her in until 5pm.

“We spoke to 111 and they said they’d send an ambulance.

“I went to work and when I came home at 10am because she was still so ill, they called back and said they wouldn’t be sending one.

“They told us not to take her to hospital as it would be too busy but we rushed her to the hospital ourselves. I was worried it was appendicitis.

“It turned out she had a hairball the size of her belly, which was causing ulcers and creating a hole in her stomach.”

After the four-and-a-half hour gastric perforation surgery, Sophie spent 10 days at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital and is now recovered.

Megan said: “It scared her. She used to chew on the ends but because there was no bald patch, we didn’t think that was what it was.

“She doesn’t do it anymore.”

WARNING TO PARENTS

Megan and Sophia want to raise awareness of Rapunzel syndrome as they believe opportunities to identify the problem were likely missed.

The mum said: “There isn’t much help or knowledge about Rapunzel syndrome because the act, which causes it, seems quite harmless.

“But we got lucky with Sophia. If we hadn’t taken her to hospital she would’ve got sepsis and then who knows what might have happened.

“Just chewing or sucking on the hair can cause the problems.

“Parents should keep an eye on your children, go to the doctors and push them for answers.

“If they’ve got a belly ache and they’re bloated, get answers and help break the habit.”

The main symptoms of Rapunzel syndrome include abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting, bloated stomach, reduced appetite, weight loss and constipation or diarrhoea.

Other cases of Rapunzel syndrome

RAPUNZEL syndrome is a condition that results from ingesting hair.

It occurs when a large hairball, also called trichobezoar, gets lodged in the stomach and extends into the small intestine.

Rapunzel syndrome is named after the fairy tale character, who was known for her long hair.

Symptoms usually include stomach pain, bloating, weight loss, nausea and vomiting.

It is considered “extremely rare”, though exactly how many people experience it is unclear.

Doctors in India previously removed a 15lb hairball from the stomach of a 17-year-old girl, Sweety Kumari.

She is thought to have built up the hairball while eating her own hair over a period of years.

A similar incident occurred in Russia, when an unnamed teenager, 16, was found to be carrying a giant hairball.

And in 2017, doctors removed a 3lb hairball from a woman’s bowel shortly after giving birth.

Rapunzel syndrome can be fatal. Also in 2017, 16-year-old Jasmine Beever died after a hairball in her stomach became infected.

IRON Series 30 Min Leg Workout – Dumbbell Leg Day | 1

Published

on

IRON Series 30 Min Leg Workout - Dumbbell Leg Day | 1

Day 1 in The IRON Series and we begin with a complete leg day workout involving some of the main dumbbell movements to recruit as much muscle as possible within each rep.

Being able to perform a movement through its full range of movement with control should be the aim. Of course we all have slightly different ways of performing the same movement including depth, foot position or range of movement available so it is important to always tweak to suit you such as toes pointed out slightly during squat if better or lower to knees and not beyond during RDLs.

Even during this workout, you could consider it as ‘dynamic stretching’ as you are moving the joint through the range available.

And use it as practice! Every workout I do is a practice session! I am forever thinking during each rep… rather than moving the weight from A to B, think about lifting ‘with’ the muscle too. Mind muscle connection can be powerful and hopefully we will see more research coming in future relating to the potential benefits of this in hypertrophy.
If you think about a bent over row… rather than allowing yourself to draw elbows up to move the weight, actually think about the muscles in your back contracting to lift the weight. This can be applied to nearly all movement patterns. Overtime, you become even more susceptible to this coming more naturally when you lift.

Every workout I share is unedited. One take and it’s my entire workout so you will see me struggle for sure! And hopefully be able to see also the focus.

I am constantly thinking as I lift and sometimes I may be thinking about one aspect when I then notice my foot isn’t perfectly inline with thigh or I could improve my neck being inline with my spine…I am saying this to remind you the importance of focus, especially when lifting. And that we all are improving continuously!

Have fun lifting and use the next 6 weeks to improve even more!

The dumbbells I am using for your reference are 15kg each!

Brain-swelling ‘sloth’ fever could be caught via SEX as cases detected in Europe for first time

Brain-swelling 'sloth' fever could be caught via SEX as cases detected in Europe for first time

DEBILITATING ‘sloth’ fever could be passed on via sex, experts fear, after the virus was detected in sperm.

The little-known disease, officially called Oropouche virus, was found in Europe this summer for the first time after it started spreading rapidly in Latin America.

'Sloth' fever could be transmitted via sex, experts have warned

The bug typically circulates between primates, including sloths – hence the nickname – before it is occasionally passed to humans by midges and mosquitoes.

Until now, experts didn’t think the virus could spread from person to person.

But a new study found “live” Oropouche virus in the semen of a 42-year-old Italian man 16 days after he initially developed symptoms, sparking concerns about possible sexual transmission.

The findings, published in Emerging Infectious Diseases, could also impact sperm donation and fertility treatments.

“Pending further evidence we recommend use of barrier protection when engaging in sexual intercourse if OROV is confirmed or suspected,” the Italian researchers said.

Most Oropouche infections are mild, with symptoms similar to Dengue, including a headache, body pains, nausea, a rash and sensitivity to light.

Some individuals may also experience gastrointestinal symptoms, like sickness and diarrhoea.

In severe cases, the virus can also attack the brain leading to meningitis or encephalitis, which can be fatal.

To make matters worse, the disease is currently incurable.

I felt like I’d been hit by a truck and put it down to heat stroke – it was a killer holiday virus

It has been circulating in Latin America and the Caribbean for decades.

A surge in cases of the bug, which is endemic in the Amazon Rainforest, has been recorded in Brazil this year – 7,284, up from 832 in 2023.

And many infections have been recorded in areas that have not previously seen the virus, including Cuba.

Last month, Brazil reported the world’s first deaths from the bug after two women in their early twenties passed away in Bahia state in the northeast of the country,

The two women, aged 21 and 24, suffered severe bleeding and hypotension and were reported dead on July 25.

At least 19 cases of Oropouche were reported in Europe for the first time in June and July, according to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) –  with 12 in Spain, five in Italy and two in Germany.

But these cases were imported into Europe – 18 of the people infected had just travelled back from Cuba and one of them from Brazil.

Oropouche virus: Everything you need to know

Oropouche fever is a disease caused by Oropouche virus

It is spread through the bites of infected midges (small flies) and mosquitoes.

Symptoms of Oropouche fever are similar to dengue and include headache, fever, muscle aches, stiff joints, nausea, vomiting, chills, or sensitivity to light.

Severe cases may result in brain diseases such as meningitis.

Symptoms typically start 4–8 days after being bitten and last 3–6 days.

Most people recover without long-term effects.

There are no specific medications or vaccines are available.

Precautions

Travellers heading to affected areas should take steps to avoid bug bites.

The virus is endemic in many South American countries, in both rural and urban communities.

Outbreaks are periodically reported in Brazil, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, French Guiana, Panama, Peru, and Trinidad and Tobago.

Wear tops with long sleeves and long trousers, apply insect repellent regularly, and sleep under a mosquito net if you are not in enclosed, air-conditioned accommodation.
