BBC make Paul Scholes apology during Ronnie O’Sullivan World Snooker Championship match

Published

on

Manchester Evening News

Ronnie O’Sullivan was in ruthless mood as he thrashed He Guoqiang 10-2 in the first round of the World Snooker Championship at the Crucible, with Manchester United legend Paul Scholes watching on from the front row

BBC commentator John Parrott issued an apology to Paul Scholes during the World Snooker Championship — owing to how little of Ronnie O’Sullivan’s match the former footballer actually got to witness. Scholes was seated in the front row for the second session of O’Sullivan’s first-round clash against Chinese debutant He Guoqiang.

The Rocket had stormed into a 7-2 lead after the opening session and required only three further frames at the Crucible on Wednesday to seal a commanding victory and book his place in the last 16.

During the ninth frame, the BBC cameras panned to Manchester United legend Scholes watching intently from his seat. O’Sullivan was subsequently spotted acknowledging the former England midfielder with a thumbs up while seated in his chair.

Parrott remarked: “A very interested spectator, one of England’s greatest midfielders, Paul Scholes, is here today to watch Ronnie. I’m sure he’ll be impressed with what he’s seen.”

Ken Doherty then chipped in from the BBC studio at the conclusion of the frame: “Fantastic. One great watching another. What a player he was! I know he loves the snooker. A lot of the footballers love to play snooker in their spare time. Great to have him here.”

However, the contest was wrapped up shortly afterwards, as O’Sullivan sealed the win with two magnificent century breaks of 113 and 120. Parrott concluded: “Paul Scholes might have enjoyed this but he’s only going to see three frames of it. Sorry Paul, this man is just too good.”

Seven-time Crucible champion O’Sullivan, 50, is making his record-extending 34th consecutive appearance at the Crucible and faces fellow Class of 92 snooker legend John Higgins in the next round in Sheffield.

O’Sullivan told BBC Sport: “A couple of oldies. I was saying just hanging around this venue I feel kind of old now because everyone is 22, 23. It’s like walking into a creche! But we are still hanging around and having a go. I am not the player I was and probably never will be but as long as I can still enjoy the game…

“I am starting to enjoy it again. I’ve got a new method. I was a bit lost for three years, really lost. I am getting through the ball but still not good enough to win these events, I have to rely on a bit of luck whereas years ago I felt if my game was OK, it’d take someone really good at their best to beat me. Not so much now! I have to play really good and they can play alright and still beat me.

“John loves playing me. He really enjoys it. I think he plays better against me than I do against him. I think in a way I will be a bit of an underdog because I’ve hardly played for the last three years compared to John.

“He’s at every tournament and beating a lot of good players. Rusty Ron comes here and rolls a bit of a dice. Sometimes he throws some sixes but most of the time they’re ones the last three years! Let’s hope I can throw a couple of fives or sixes against John. But he’s probably favourite but it’s a different type of pressure.

“The pressure’s off me and more on John in this match. It should be a good game. Hopefully I can give him a decent game!”

O’Sullivan admitted to experiencing cue tip troubles during the week. He continued: “I think the tip is more important than the cue to be honest with you. That’s why I brought two cues. I have been saving this all year because it had a bit of life in it and I thought if I come here and my main cue is no good then I’d rather have a cue I like with a good tip on because I can get used to anything pretty quickly if I like it.

“The tip wasn’t good yesterday. I did a good job considering. A bit of a roll of the dice, a bit of a gamble, I was a bit nervous because I thought I could look a bit silly but you have to back yourself. I back myself.

“I make some crazy decisions in everyone else’s eyes but they make complete sense to me and it’s seemed to work for me over the years so I tend to listen to my own advice. It might go wrong sometimes but overall it’s worked pretty well for me.”

Coronation Street fans spot Lisa Swain star’s sweet move as soap wedding airs

fans were quick to spot actress Vicky Myers’ very fast move as she was seen tying the knot in the latest episode of the ITV soap

Coronation Street fans were quick to spot Vicky Myers’ very fast move as she was seen tying the knot in the latest episode of the long-running show.

The actress made her debut in the ITV soap as DS Lisa Swain back in 2021, but it wasn’t until 2024 that she was announced as a regular on the cobbles. It was then months later that Lisa was seen striking up a romance with Carla Connor and the rest, as they say, is history.

While it hasn’t been easy for the couple to get to this point, during Thursday’s (April 23) edition of Corrie, which became available at 7am on ITVX and YouTube ahead of the wedding episode airing on ITV at 8.30pm, Lisa and Carla were finally seen saying ‘I do’.

And it marks a major moment for the soap itself, as the couple’s nuptials mark the first time that two women have successfully married in Corrie’s 65-year history, a milestone being widely celebrated by fans.

While things almost didn’t got to plan, thanks to Carl Webster causing a flood at the hotel in retaliation to Debbie not signing over half the business to him, the couple were eventually seen walking down the aisle at the Chariot Square Hotel, with Lisa’s daughter, Betsy, Carla’s nephew, Ryan Connor, and her father-figure, Roy Cropper as their witnesses.

Following the early airing of the episode, some Corrie fans were quick to share their thoughts on social media, but some eagle-eyed X (formerly Twitter) users were quick to notice that Vicky wasted no time in making a change, as she updated the bio on her profiled to say: “Lisa Connor-Swain in @itvcorrie.”

Commenting on the move, @Teardrop76 said: “Iconic behaviour by Miss Myers at this time in the morning and this is why we adore her . The love and devotion she gives to playing Lisa Connor-Swain is unreal . Happy wedding day #swarla and thank you @VixMyers #Alisonking.”

@Swain__Connor shared: “She’s been waiting to do that for weeks [crying emojis].” @carrlaconnor posted: “Vicky updating her twitter bio to read ‘lisa connor-swain in itv corrie’ [face holding back tears emoji].” @simplymrtv replied: “She was waiting and watching just like us [crying and crying laughing emojis].”

@TheConnorSwains shared: “Not Vicky already updating her bio to Lisa Connor-Swain #Swarla #Corrie.” @Paw135792468 added: “Vicky changing her bio to “Lisa Connor-Swain” really does something to my swarla soul! #swarla #corrie #ConnorSwain.”

BBC Scotland radio presenter Michelle McManus to leave Afternoons show in major shake-up

Published

on

Daily Record

The star will step down from their role at BBC Radio Scotland at the end of May as the organisation prepares for a major shift in the station’s current line-up

BBC Scotland has confirmed that one of its high-profile presenters will be leaving the airways in the coming weeks. Michelle McManus, best known for winning Pop Idol in 2003, is set to step down from her role on BBC Radio Scotland’s Afternoons programme. Her final show will air on Friday, May 29.

Following her departure, River City star Grant Stott will take over hosting duties. His return comes five years after he previously left the show in 2021, bringing a familiar voice back to listeners. He will be on air presenting Afternoons from Monday to Thursday, with the programme continuing to air from 1:30 pm to 4 pm.

The 45-year-old singers exit is part of a broader reshuffle within the station, she has held the role since 2023 as well as presenting the Entertainment Mix. Alongside Michelle, presenters Len Pennie and Nicola Meighan will also leave their roles at the end of May. The trio’s departure signals a notable shift in the station’s current line-up.

Victoria Easton Riley, Head of Audio and Events at BBC Scotland, acknowledged the contributions of the three departing presenters. She said: “We’re enormously grateful to Michelle, Len and Nicola for the energy, creativity and passion they’ve brought to the programme.”

She added: “We wish them every success, and our door is open for future collaborations.”

Speaking about returning to the BBC and taking over for Michelle, Grant told the BBC: “I’m absolutely delighted to be returning to Afternoons. The Radio Scotland audience is a warm, curious and engaging bunch and I can’t wait to dive back in.

“We’ll be bringing listeners everything they need to stay plugged into Scotland’s buzzing arts and culture scene, all with the perfect soundtrack.”

The changes reflect a wider period of transition at BBC Radio Scotland, with Michelle becoming the latest recognisable name to move on. In recent months, several huge stars have also left the station as part of ongoing restructuring efforts.

In November BBC Radio Scotland confirmed it was dropping some of its longest-serving figures. Among those affected were Billy Sloan and Ian Anderson, both of who have worked at the Beeb since the 1980s.

Natasha Raskin Sharp and Roddy Hart were also included in the shake-up.

According to broadcasting executives, the aim of these changes are to reshape output in a big to achieve “broad mainstream appeal”.

There is also a clear intention to attract younger audiences, with new strategies introduced under the leadership of Ms Easton Riley.

However, the transformation is not limited to presenters. The BBC recently announced the plans for widespread job cuts across the organisation. More than 2,000 roles are expected to be affected, equating to roughly one in ten staff members.

This move represents the largest wave of redundancies at the corporation in nearly 15 years and forms part of a major cost cutting drive.

Lamine Yamal facing major World Cup scare as Barcelona and Spain fear the worst

Published

on

Daily Mirror

Spain boss Luis de la Fuente is deep in preparations for this summer’s World Cup but he has a fresh concern with Lamine Yamal having seemingly picked up an injury

Spain have a fresh World Cup worry on their hands with star winger Lamine Yamal picking up a potentially serious injury. The Barcelona winger was expected to play a crucial part for the European champions at this summer’s tournament in the USA, Mexico and Canada.

But he will now undergo tests after picking up an injury in the process of scoring a penalty in the Catalan giants’ slender 1-0 win against Celta Vigo on Wednesday evening.

Speaking after the game, Barcelona boss Hansi Flick said: “We have to wait. We have to see what it is. There is something. He felt it. After the goal, he would not leave the pitch without reason.

“So it’s something. Something happened. Hopefully it’s not so bad, but we have to wait until tomorrow.”

He added: “I think there’s an injury, but we’ll have to wait to see how long he’ll be out. I can’t say anything else. We have to wait. As a coach, you have to manage these things.

“It’s a shame that Lamine got injured now, but I’m also thinking about Raphinha, [Marc] Bernal, [Andreas] Christensen… Now we have to focus on Getafe. I wouldn’t say I’m upset, I’m thinking about a lot of things. We fought hard.”

Spanish outlet Marca have reported that Yamal has suffered a hamstring tear, which would put the rest of his season, as well as the winger’s place at the World Cup, in significant doubt.

Yamal’s Barcelona and Spain teammate Pedri said: “We just hope that Yamal’s injury is not significant. We still don’t know and I imagine we will need to wait for the medical tests tomorrow, but I’m optimistic because he is young and should get back soon.”

Yamal has enjoyed another sensational season with Barcelona. The 18-year-old has 24 goals and 18 assists in all competitions this term.

That form has taken his side to the verge of the La Liga crown, with Barcelona currently sitting nine points clear of fierce rivals Real Madrid with six games to be played.

Yamal was not the only injury concern that Barcelona picked up against Celta Vigo. Portugal defender Joao Cancelo was also withdrawn in the first half with an apparent muscle injury.

“We hope their injuries are not serious and that they are back with us as soon as possible,” Barcelona goalkeeper Joan García said about those issues.

Spain will take on Cape Verde, Saudi Arabia and Uruguay in Group H of this summer’s World Cup.

Homeowner left with human waste and putrid sewage ‘flooding her garden’

Published

on

Daily Record

Belle Dean is demanding the flat’s owners, Czech Real, take action to sort out the problem.

A disgusted woman says her home has become unliveable after human waste flooded her back garden.

Belle Deans said she has been cut off from using her back yard because of issues with pipework at a neighbouring flat. It is resulting in waste, including excrement, ending up outside her property and back door.

The sickened Port Glasgow woman is demanding the flat’s owners, Czech Real, take action to sort out the problem once and for all. Belle says she’s already had to contend with putrid sewage coming up through her shower and toilet in December, which took weeks to fix, and fears it could happen again if action isn’t taken soon.

She says the dampness in her walls is forcing her to choose between keeping the windows closed and breathing in damp air, or opening them and letting in the offensive odour of the waste from outside.

She said: “I’m too ashamed to have anybody come and visit me here. I think all the neighbours feel the same.

“Even sitting on the couch, I get breathless. I was basically living in my bedroom.

“I can’t sit in there any more because of the sewage out there.”

Belle believes the dampness is caused by a box gutter that overflows during heavy rain, which serves multiple flats in the close. Belle’s landlord, Chesnutt Skeoch, and RCH, who factor a neighbouring property, are currently locked in a dispute about who is responsible for resolving the problem.

She said the situation has taken a ‘terrible’ toll on her mental and physical health and has worsened the depression and anxiety from which she already suffers. Belle says she struggles to get the energy to do anything, but when she does get out, to distract herself, she says she dreads the thought of returning home.

Linda Kernican, who lives in the flat next to Belle’s, says the ‘disgusting’ situation makes her feel ill, and the waste is ‘ruining’ her floors. Linda’s landlord, Czech Real, were contacted about the issue, but did not respond.

A spokesperson for Chesnutt Skeoch insisted that fixing the guttering which had caused the dampness was RCH’s responsibility, and said they reported the issue to the housing association on January 16.

An RCH representative said: “Following notification of an issue of dampness at 26 Highholm Road, we conducted an inspection which confirmed the downpipe at number 26 is currently discharging directly into the gutter at 24 Highholm Road.

“During heavy rain, this results in significantly higher water volumes that exceed the capacity of the gutter at number 24. To rectify the impact on our factored property at 24, we have carried out minor remedial works.

“However, our specialist has advised that the guttering at number 26 should have its own independent downpipe fitted. As we hold no ownership or factoring responsibilities for number 26, we are unfortunately unable to undertake any works at that address, where repairs remain the responsibility of the respective owners. We will continue to maintain the block at number 24 as necessary.”

The couple have made history as they tied the knot in the ITV soap

Coronation Street fans have been unable to resist watching what they have dubbed soap land’s ‘royal wedding’ unfold as Lisa Swain and Carla Connor married in the long-running show.

Those who have been following the couple’s romance in the ITV soap know that things haven’t been easy ever since they gave in to their feelings for one another towards the end of 2024 – from Carla’s ill health and being held hostage by her escaped prisoner brother, to Lisa’s job and struggles with her past.

But just as things started to look up at the end of last summer, with Lisa popping the question and the couple moving into their first home, No.6 Coronation Street, ‘Swarla’s’ future was flipped upside down once again.

And while there was quite a bit of drama in between, eventually, Lisa and Carla were reunited after Becky was sentenced to 12 years behind bars, and more loved-up than ever, Carla soon surprised the love of her life, by booking their wedding date at the Chariot Square Hotel.

The big day was set for April 23 but at the time, it was also confirmed that their ‘beautiful’ wedding day will end with a shock for poor Betsy Swain as Lisa’s daughter discovers one of her neighbours dead on the cobbles.

While things almost didn’t got to plan, thanks to Carl Webster causing a flood at the hotel in retaliation to Debbie not signing over half the business to him, Lisa and Carla, played by Vicky Myers and Alison King, have made Corrie history as the first two women to successfully wed in the ITV soap.

Without giving away any spoilers, Corrie fans who tuned into the episode on ITVX and YouTube, where it became available from 7am ahead of the wedding episode airing on ITV at 8.30pm, have been flocking to social media to share their first thoughts.

‘This is bonkers for Blackpool… it’s pure greed’

Manchester Evening News

The tourist tax move has been branded ‘bonkers’ by Blackpool residents

Blackpool locals have rejected calls for a tourism tax to be introduced in the north west seaside town.

The debate regarding introducing a new tax kicked off earlier in the week, with hoteliers in Blackpool adamant that it would be wrong for the popular seaside town.

Local businesses labelled any attempt to introduce it into the resort as ‘bonkers’, and now residents have rejected the idea too.

A tourism tax is a small, mandatory fee added to accommodation bills or charged to visitors entering popular destinations, which aims to help fund local services, infrastructure repairs, and sustainable tourism initiatives.

It comes as similar concerns were raised in Devon and Cornwall about the possibility of a tourism levy following in the footsteps of city areas with a mayor, such as Manchester and Liverpool.

Lancashire would be able to introduce the tax too, because of the new status of the combined authority, which brought Blackpool into the debate.

Resident Chris Russell told Lancs Live: “I am mixed on this one – it could pay for lights, tourist information and all the free service as long as the council keep it to a small reasonable level. This tax in place in lots of places around world.”

Stuart Askin added: “They do it it’s rampant in other places.”

Paul Jackson said: “The amount of tourism in Blackpool has declined a great deal since the 70s when it was packed so do you honestly think them having to pay tax is going to help that? It’ll put anyone off coming – cheaper to go abroad as it is.”

Brendam Pawsn said: “It’s bonkers to bring tourist tax in anywhere, it will put people off.”

Peter Henson said of the tax: “It’s just pure greed.”

The Government is still in discussion about whether to introduce it into areas outside Liverpool and Manchester, with many business urging Chancellor Rachel Reeves not to do it.

Lancashire County Council formally launched the Lancashire Combined County Authority (CCA) with Blackpool Council and Blackburn with Darwen Council on February 5, 2025.

Lancashire County Council was asked abut the tourism tax and said: “The LCCA has not considered charges. We await the outcome of the government’s consultation.”

Jet2 bans couple for life after lewd behaviour on flight to Gran Canaria

Published

on

Daily Record

The pair were reportedly kicked off their return flight and booted out of their hotel after the alleged incident on the Jet2 flight to Gran Canaria

Jet2 has handed two passengers in their 50s lifetime bans following their shocking behaviour on board a flight to the Canary Islands.

The airline, which operates a strict zero-tolerance policy towards “appalling” conduct, took swift action against the pair after the incident unfolded.

The couple had been travelling from East Midlands Airport to Gran Canaria last Thursday when the incident happened, and were subsequently barred from their return flight and thrown out of their hotel.

The pair were caught engaging in lewd acts with one another shortly after take-off on the four-hour flight, leaving fellow passengers horrified.

Other travellers witnessed the brazen behaviour as the plane became airborne and wasted no time in alerting cabin crew, who at one point considered turning the aircraft back to East Midlands Airport.

Two passengers have since spoken to The Sun about their experience on board. Darren Street, 51, who was travelling with his wife Lisa, 47, inadvertently captured the couple’s inappropriate behaviour on video while filming during take-off.

He told the publication: “It was incredibly blatant, there was a lot of vigorous movement going on in his jogging bottoms.

“My wife and I were shocked and disgusted. We told a crew member, and they came over to speak to the couple. But, when confronted, the couple claimed they were praying because it was their first time on a plane.

“They must have thought it was the stewardess’s first day on earth. We all knew what they were doing.”, reports the Express.

He continued: “When we first told the crew, they said they were going to turn the plane around. Then we learned they would be banned from the hotel and their plane back instead.

“They said it was so serious they would have to deal with it straight away. It made the flight really awkward, it was right at the beginning of the four-hour flight and they would not stop staring at us.

“They didn’t say anything but they weren’t happy. We told the staff because there were kids on the plane.”

Jet2 responded with an official statement, saying: “These customers have been banned for life. As a family-friendly airline and holiday company, we take a zero-tolerance approach to appalling behaviour such as this.”

Labour risk being ‘stonked’ in London in May elections over Peter Mandelson scandal, Sadiq Khan warns

Labour risk being ‘stonked’ in London in May elections over Peter Mandelson scandal, Sadiq Khan warns

Sadiq Khan has warned the “omnishambles” of Peter Mandelson’s appointment has left Labour in danger of “being stonked” across London in the May elections.

In a stark warning to Sir Keir Starmer, the London mayor admitted Labour are having a tough time on the doorstep in the capital with Westminster scandal threatening the party’s foothold in London’s councils.

Describing the Mandelson crisis as “an omnishambles from start to finish”, Sir Sadiq said he was “really frustrated” that the scandal was making it harder to engage voters in the party’s local achievements.

“I’d rather be talking about that than be on the defensive talking about the omnishambles of the Mandelson saga,” he told the Financial Times.

“I’m afraid what will happen is that rather than saying to voters ‘listen, this is the difference that a Labour council, working with a Labour mayor and a Labour government, can make’, people may decide to punish the imperfections of the government.”

“We’re in danger of being stonked on May 7,” he said, adding the campaigning had been “some of the most difficult I can remember” in over 40 years.

The Labour Party is on course for its worst result in London in more than four decades at the upcoming local elections, with both the Greens and Reform set to eat into their vote.

A new MRP poll of the 32 London boroughs, conducted by YouGov for Sky News and Politico, shows Labour is on course to win the highest vote share in 15 councils – six fewer than in 2022.

The last time Labour won fewer than 15 London councils was in 1982, 44 years ago, when they won just 12.

The Green Party is expected to take the highest vote share across four councils, including Lewisham and Lambeth, while Reform is expected to take the highest share in three. Neither party has ever previously topped the poll on any council in London.

Labour sources told The Independent they are expecting a “bloodbath” in Islington, while Green Party sources said they were expecting to take Hackney.

Sir Sadiq warned the party over its strategy in chasing Reform voters, as the Green Party looks set to surge in London.

“I’m slightly nervous with this hero voter strategy, this understandable obsession to chase the Reform voter,” he said. “This could lead to progressive voters feeling, wrongly, the Labour Party isn’t for them.”
