7 Fantasy Miniseries That Are True Masterpieces

Published

on

Tavra from 'The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance'

Diving into a miniseries can be a great way to spend a weekend. Miniseries have been around for years before streaming, and now they are perfectly suited for binge-watching. They can be enjoyed as mini-cations from a favorite show that has wrapped for the season or whenever media buffs want a change in their normal viewing schedule. Feeling like a complete narrative that doesn’t extend past its creative boundaries, a miniseries offers an encapsulated, perfect amount of diversion.

When it comes to fantasy miniseries, the world-building quality is dialed up to 11. With faraway places, magic spells, and mythical creatures, the effect is enchanting, and when done well, they can become lasting examples of television excellence. From dinosaur-human paradises to much-anticipated sequels, these fantasy miniseries are some of the best ever made. Whether you’re in the mood for a family-friendly and feel-good escape or a dramatic and adrenaline-filled tale, these fantasy miniseries deserve a spot on your watchlist.

‘The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance’ (2019)

After waiting over three decades for more lore, fan expectations were high for The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance. A prequel to the 1982 film, Age of Resistance follows three brave Gelfling as they begin to unravel the lies the wicked Skeksis have been telling their people for years. More often than not, when the buildup is so intense for an oncoming project, there is sure to be some let-down. However, Age of Resistance knocked it out of the park, and both new and loyal fans were satisfied with the skillful storytelling and fantastic special effects.

Although the creators of the show had more planned and the world of Thra is rich and complex enough to support more material, the show was concluded as a miniseries rather than extended as an ongoing one. Netflix has a nasty habit of canceling good shows, and audience receptiveness seems to hold no sway in the studio’s decisions. Luckily, Age of Resistance is a perfect gem as it is. While exploring further into the story would have been rewarding, for those who love layered storytelling, The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance is an ideal choice.

‘Over the Garden Wall’ (2014)

As Bilbo Baggins once warned Frodo in J.R.R. Tolkien‘s The Lord of the Rings, “It’s a dangerous business, Frodo, going out your door. You step onto the road, and if you don’t keep your feet, there’s no knowing where you might be swept off to.” The raison d’être for Over the Garden Wall is in the same vein and follows two brothers who only venture a few steps beyond their normality and find themselves swept away into an entirely new and strange world.

Over the Garden Wall is a perfect blend of folk and Gothic vibes. The mise en scène makes viewers feel unsure, but always curious and trusting that somehow, everything is going to work out in the end. Over the Garden Wall is a visually distinct animated series that feels almost like anime. It tells a weaving, enthralling story with unique visuals and solid voice acting. Over 10 years old, Over the Garden Wall remains one of the top TV shows on Letterboxd and is a traditional autumnal watch for devotees.

If you haven’t seen this cult-favorite sleeper hit, now is your chance to take in The 10th Kingdom. Finally released on streaming this year, U.S. audiences can seize the opportunity to enjoy this early ’00s masterpiece. Featuring Kimberly Williams-Paisley, John Larroquette, Ed O’Neill, Dianne Wiest, and Scott Cohen, it envisions a world within a world, with a magic mirror serving as a portal between the two.

In The 10th Kingdom, Virginia Lewis (Williams-Paisley) travels to the other world and discovers that the princesses most know, such as Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella (Ann-Margret), are now reigning queens in adjacent kingdoms. However, evil queens and nefarious plots are just as real, and Virginia learns that her connection to the magical land runs far deeper than she ever would have expected. The 10th Kingdom is a fabulously fun, fractured fairy tale and is full of cameos by stars like Camryn Manheim, Rutger Hauer, and Warwick Davis. The 10th Kingdom has interesting character journeys, action, romance, and humor. It is one of the best fairy tale TV shows of all time and makes for a highly entertaining watch.

‘Merlin’ (1998)

Not to be confused with the equally awesome TV show starring Colin Morgan, the 1998 miniseries has Sam Neill as the titular character, Merlin. Absolutely loaded with talent, the impressive roster for the miniseries includes Helena Bonham Carter as Morgan Le Fey, James Earl Jones as Mountain King, Isabella Rossellini as Nimue, and Lena Headey as Guinevere. This two-part triumph tells the story of King Arthur (Paul Curran) and how the wizard Merlin influenced his life. Merlin uses an ingenious choice to shift the main attention to Merlin’s side of events rather than Arthur’s, and it makes for a refreshing lens to view the story through.

Neill is a consummate performer, well known in the industry for his ability to bring a substantial level of gravitas to his roles. Watching him as Merlin is highly rewarding as he brings an invigorating amount of depth and allure to the character. Bonham Carter is equally impressive as Morgan Le Fey and shines in Merlin, years before some of her more well-known projects. Merlin has engaging special effects and gripping writing full of intrigue. It is one of the best works done on the legendary source material and is more than deserving of a spot on this list.

Gollum

You carry something heavy — and you carry it alone, even when you don’t have to. You were not born for greatness, and that is precisely why greatness chose you. Your courage is not the roaring, sword-swinging kind; it is quiet, stubborn, and terrifying in its refusal to quit. The Ring weighs on you more than anyone can see, and still you walk toward the fire. That is not weakness. That is the rarest kind of strength there is.

You are, without question, the best of them. Not the most powerful, not the most celebrated — but the most essential. Your loyalty is not a trait; it is a force of nature. You would carry the person you love up the slopes of Mount Doom if it came to that, and we both know you’d do it without being asked. The world needs more people like you, and the world is lucky it has even one.

You were born to lead, and you have spent years running from it. The crown is yours by right, but you know better than anyone that right means nothing without the will and the worthiness to back it up. You are tempered by loss, shaped by long roads, and defined by a code of honour you hold to even when no one is watching. When you finally step forward, the world shifts. Because it was always waiting for you.

You have seen more than you let on, and you say less than you know — which is exactly as it should be. You are a catalyst: you do not fight the battles yourself, you ignite the people who can. Your wisdom comes not from books but from an age of watching what happens when it is ignored. You arrive precisely when you mean to, and your presence alone changes what is possible. A wizard is never late.

Graceful, perceptive, and almost preternaturally calm under pressure — you see things others miss and act before others react. You do not need to make a scene to be remarkable; your presence speaks for itself. You are loyal to those you choose to stand beside, and that choice is not made lightly. You have lived long enough to know that the most beautiful things in this world are also the most fragile, and that is why you fight to protect them.

You are loud, proud, and absolutely formidable — and beneath all of that is one of the most fiercely loyal hearts in Middle-earth. You don’t do anything by half measures. Your friendships are forged like iron, your grudges run as deep as mines, and your courage in battle is the kind that makes legends. You came into this fellowship suspicious of everyone and ended it willing to die for an elf. That is not a small thing. That is everything.

You think in centuries and act in absolutes. Order, dominion, control — not because you are cruel by nature, but because you have decided that the world left to itself always falls apart, and you are the only one with the vision and the will to hold it together. You were not always this. Something was lost, or taken, or betrayed, and the version of you that stands now is the answer to that wound. The tragedy is that you’re not entirely wrong — just entirely too far gone to course-correct.

You are a study in contradiction — pitiable and dangerous, cunning and broken, capable of both cruelty and something that once resembled love. You are defined by loss: of innocence, of self, of the one thing that gave your existence meaning. Two voices war inside you constantly, and the tragedy is that the better one sometimes wins, just not often enough, and never at the right moment. You are a warning, yes — but also a mirror. We are all a little Gollum, given the right ring and enough time.

‘Moon Knight’ (2022)

Moon Knight is a Disney+ miniseries that is absolutely perfect from start to finish. Oscar Isaac is exemplary as Steven Grant, a man whose world is turned upside down when he discovers he has multiple personalities, and one of them can communicate with the Egyptian moon god Khonshu (F. Murray Abraham). To play multiple roles within a body of work requires an extra level of talent, and to have all of those roles inhabit the same being is phenomenal.

Moon Knight is a perfect blend of ancient Egyptian themes and modern-day action. It is enthralling from beginning to end, and audiences can’t help but root for or identify with one or more of the main characters’ personalities. Ethan Hawke is superb as Arthur Harrow, and May Calamawy adds dimension to the series with her stellar performance as Layla El-Faouly. Although Moon Knight is part of the Marvel Comics canon, you don’t have to be a fan of superhero movies to enjoy this thematic triumph. It is a must-see for any cerebral fantasy fan and is one of the best collaborations Marvel and Disney have done to date.

‘Arabian Nights’ (2000)

For anyone who loves storytelling, there is no miniseries better than Arabian Nights. Based on One Thousand and One Nights, a collection of Middle Eastern, South Asian, and North African folktales, Arabian Nights stars Mili Avital as Scheherezade. When Scheherezade weds Sultan Shahryar (Dougray Scott), she must use all of her courage and cunning to not only spare her life, but those of all the women in the kingdom. Driven mad by betrayal, the Sultan distrusts everyone around him, including Scheherezade. As she tells him a story night after night, she cleverly draws out his thoughts and helps him find a path back to sanity.

Arabian Nights has it all. A great cast, fantastic sets, gorgeous costumes, and solid special effects that still look good on camera. Most importantly, Arabian Nights has fantastic storytelling. Scott and Avital are brilliant in their roles, portraying the obvious and underlying motives of their characters. The supporting cast is equally dedicated, with actors like John Leguizamo as Genie of the Lamp, Jim Carter as Ja’far, Rufus Sewell as Ali Baba, and Andy Serkis as Kasim. The chemistry and dynamic between Avital and Scott make the main plot as gripping as the side stories, and Arabian Nights is altogether a fantasy masterpiece.

What if dinosaurs and humans lived together in harmony? That is the unusual premise behind James Gurney‘s beloved book series. Adapting the material to the small screen, Dinotopia became a visually charming and richly rewarding miniseries in 2002. When half-brothers David (Wentworth Miller) and Karl (Tyron Leitso) survive a plane crash, they discover the mysterious land of Dinotopia. The two brothers soon learn that this is a place like no other. In Dinotopia intelligent, speaking dinosaurs live and work together with humans to create an idealistic civilization.

Blending puppetry with computer-generated special effects, Dinotopia is a fully immersive adventure tale that audiences of all ages can enjoy together. David Thewlis, Katie Carr, and Lee Evans join the cast, and each character, whether human or reptile, is charming to watch. Dinotopia is currently free to stream on Pluto TV in the U.S., and now is a perfect time to watch this family-friendly fantasy triumph.

The Best Sci-Fi Series on Apple TV Proves It’s Still the Perfect Weekend Binge

Published

on

03200623_poster_w780.jpg

When Vince Gilligan created the iconic Breaking Bad, he could’ve never picked up a pen (or opened his laptop) again, and his legacy as one of the best would’ve remained. A 16-Primetime Emmy-winning series among countless other accolades, Breaking Bad was so popular, influential, and impressive that it changed television forever, as it became the blueprint for prestige success for streaming and helped define the “Golden Age” of TV.

Almost two decades later, Gilligan continues not to sit still, releasing arguably one of the best shows of this decade as his legacy somehow grows beyond the world of Walter White. The show in question is Pluribus, yet another sci-fi success for Apple TV, that reunited Gilligan with Better Call Saul star Rhea Seehorn. The series is set in a world where humanity has been overtaken by a virus that evolves each person into part of a peaceful hivemind. However, Seehorn’s Carol Sturka is one of just 13 people not to be affected by the so-called “Joining,” with her misery the only thing ready to save humanity from its sickening happiness.

A stunning success for Apple TV, its premiere episode was watched for an impressive 6.4 million hours in just seven days, with the series quickly becoming the most-watched on the streamer worldwide, and eventually breaking the record for Apple TV’s most-watched series of all time. It has now been almost four months since the show’s jaw-dropping finale on December 24, 2025, and it has yet to lose its impact on the streaming charts. At the time of writing, Pluribus is once again one of the ten most-streamed shows on Apple TV in the U.S., on all Amazon channels.

Your Fate Has Been Calculated
You’d Survive In…

Your answers point to the world your instincts were built for. This is the universe your temperament, your survival instincts, and your particular brand of stubbornness were made for.

The Resistance, Zion

The Matrix

You took the red pill a long time ago — probably before anyone offered it to you. You’re a systems thinker who can’t help but notice the seams in things.

  • You’re drawn to understanding how the system works before figuring out how to break it.
  • You’d find the Resistance, or it would find you — your instinct for spotting constructed realities is the machines’ worst nightmare.
  • You function best when you have access to information and the freedom to act on it.
  • The Matrix built an airtight prison. You’d be the one probing the walls for the door.

The Wasteland

Mad Max

The wasteland doesn’t reward the clever or the well-connected — it rewards those who are hard to kill and harder to break. That’s you.

  • You don’t need comfort, community, or a cause larger than the next horizon.
  • You need a vehicle, a clear threat, and enough fuel to outrun it — and you’re good at all three.
  • You are unsentimental enough to survive that world, and decent enough — just barely — to be something more than another raider.
  • In the wasteland, that distinction is everything.

Los Angeles, 2049

Blade Runner

You’d survive here because you know how to exist in moral grey areas without losing yourself completely.

  • You read people accurately, keep your circle small, and ask the questions others prefer not to answer.
  • In a city where humanity is a legal designation rather than a feeling, you hold onto something that keeps you functional.
  • You’re not a hero. But you’re not lost, either.
  • In Blade Runner’s world, that distinction is everything.

Arrakis

Dune

Arrakis is the most hostile environment in the known universe — and you are precisely the kind of person it rewards.

  • Patience, discipline, and political awareness are your core strengths — and on Arrakis, they’re survival tools.
  • You understand that the long game matters more than any single victory.
  • Others come to Dune and are consumed by it. You’d learn its logic and earn its respect.
  • In time, you wouldn’t just survive Arrakis — you’d begin to reshape it.

A Galaxy Far, Far Away

Star Wars

The galaxy far, far away is vast, loud, and in a constant state of violent political upheaval — and you wouldn’t have it any other way.

  • You find meaning in being part of something larger than yourself — a cause, a crew, a rebellion.
  • You’d gravitate toward the Rebellion, or the fringes, or whatever pocket of the galaxy still believes the Empire’s grip can be broken.
  • You fight — not because you have to, but because standing aside isn’t something you’re capable of.
  • In Star Wars, that willingness is what makes all the difference.

When Will ‘Pluribus’ Return?

With a show this detailed, it’s understandable that time needs to be taken before it can return. However, there has been a trend in recent years for popular shows to take three or more years to return, a situation that Pluribus lovers will be desperate to avoid. In a recent interview, Karolina Wydra, who portrays Zosia in the series, gave our closest hint at when the show could return thus far, saying that she expects production on Season 2 to begin “sometime in the fall.” With that in mind, a late-2027 premiere might be likely for Season 2.

Pluribus is streaming now on Apple TV. Stay tuned to Collider for more streaming stories.

“We’re always there for each other,” she continued. “And I learned a long time ago to really not listen to the noise. Someone’s always going to have something to say. I focus and I just don’t pay attention to it.”

Beckham also credited the recent documentaries that she and husband David had on Netflix for allowing her to tame her natural need to be in control.

“I always say that I went into the process a control freak and came out a reformed control freak, because I didn’t have that much control,” she revealed. “I learned so much from the process of the documentary. It was like a year’s intense therapy.”

“We always put our children first,” she said. “We love our children so much and have always really focused on protecting our children, but we laugh a lot. David Beckham is really, super funny.”

Did Happy’s Place’s Reba, Rex Linn Get Back Together in Finale?

Published

During the Friday, April 24, episode of the hit NBC sitcom, Emmett (Linn) ended his relationship with girlfriend Monica (Cheri Oteri). He told Bobbie (McEntire), who wanted to share with Emmett that she was ready for them to date again. But before Bobbie could explain herself, Emmett made it clear he was done with dating — for now.

Bobbie chose to respect Emmett’s wishes and they ended the season single. The twist might come as a surprise to fans who tuned into season 2 expecting to see Emmett and Bobbie as a couple.

However, when season 2 premiered in 2025, Emmett revealed to Steve (Pablo Castelblanco) that he didn’t tell Bobbie he’d known about her secret sister, Isabella (Belissa Escobedo), for years.

“It’s a big twist, for sure. While reflecting on the milestone moment, Escobedo broke down why now was the right time to explore the romance, adding, “Isabella coming into Bobbie’s life opened her up a bit. It brought out a more vulnerable side because she was forced to be vulnerable. Isabella pushed her to it. There’s a softer side that comes desiring some romance and some comfort.”

Linn, 69, also weighed in on the timing of the two major story lines.

Donnie Wahlberg got honest about how expensive it was to make Blue Bloods — and why it led to the cast taking a pay cut before the show’s cancellation.

“With Blue Bloods, they came to us before the final year and said, ‘You need to take a 25 percent pay cut or we’re going off the air.’ And some people were like, ‘Nope.’ Other people were like, ‘OK,’” Wahlberg, 56, shared in the Tuesday, April 21, episode of “The George Janko Show” podcast.

The actor, who played Danny Reagan on the show, tried to negotiate. “I was like, ‘Why not just say [a] 15 [percent pay cut] in exchange for four more seasons?’” he recalled. “Because they were like, ‘This is the last year, so 25 percent pay cut.’ I just was like, ‘Let’s keep it going. I’d rather have 75 percent of something than zero percent of zero.’”

Blue Bloods ultimately came to an end after 14 seasons on CBS.

“I naively thought if we take the pay cut — and this is where other people were right — that we could have kept going. But the show has gotten so expensive and the industry has changed,” Wahlberg explained. “They used to make 10 to 20 TV pilots on one network. … There’s no pilot season anymore. It’s all changed.”

The hit series found a strong fanbase when it premiered on CBS in 2010. After a 14-season run, viewers were not ready to say goodbye to New York Police Commissioner Frank Reagan (Tom Selleck) and his children: Danny (Wahlberg), Erin (Bridget Moynahan) and Jamie (Will Estes).

CBS, however, had different plans when speculation grew that Blue Bloods could end despite the cast and producers agreeing to take a 25 percent pay cut. After Blue Bloods’ series finale in December 2024, Wahlberg scored a spinoff with CBS’ Boston Blue.

“I can assure every viewer out there that nobody was more disappointed than me. Nobody cried more than me. Nobody’s heart was broken more than mine,” Wahlberg exclusively told Us Weekly in February. “I fought tooth and nail to save Blue Bloods. I did everything I could.”

Wahlberg recalled having to mourn the end of Blue Bloods before making the transition.

“I had to go through the process of saying goodbye to our crew and the cast and reconciling the fact that [Blue Bloods] could now be in my rearview mirror,” he continued. “I had to let go of Danny Reagan and Blue Bloods. So when this came along, I had to reevaluate. It wasn’t just a snap decision.”

He concluded: “It became an easier decision as I got to work on the pilot script with the Brandons [creators Brandon Margolis and Brandon Sonnier]. I found ways to make it authentic to Danny, make it plausible that he would go to Boston, and find ways to really make Danny a fish out of water.”

Rihanna Seemingly Addresses Baby Rumors, Talks "Little Pouch"

Calling Black people chimps, n-words and justifying slavery on camera has left one Houston Police Department officer jobless! The agency shared on Friday (April 24) that it fired Ashley Gonzalez following her racist remarks. Gonzalez had initially filmed and posted her rant on Instagram’s ‘Close Friends,’ but it went viral after someone apparently leaked it. She has yet to address the public about her offensive comments.

Houston Officer Fired Over Viral Racist Rant (UPDATE)

HPD announced the update regarding Officer Ashley Gonzalez on its social platforms, including X. They named her and shunned her actions, revealing she was fired following an internal investigation.

“The Houston Police Department (HPD) has terminated the employment of Ashley Gonzalez. As of today, she is no longer an employee of the department. HPD holds every officer to the highest standards of integrity and conduct, and will not waver in upholding these expectations.”

Additionally, HPD’s statement clarified that Ashley had been relieved of her duties earlier this week after the agency first learned about the viral video. Houston Public Media reported on Wednesday that Gonzalez was relieved with pay. HPD today confirmed a speedy investigation took place as required by state civil laws. Police Chief Noe Diaz Jr. strongly condemned Ashley Gonzalez’s actions.

“The behavior exhibited by Ashley Gonzalez was abhorrent, disgusting, and entirely unacceptable,” the chief said. “It is deeply disturbing and has no place in law enforcement or in our community.”

Ashley had reportedly been with the Houston Police Department since January 2024, assigned to the South Gessner Patrol Division.

Mayor Speaks Out After Ashley Gonzalez Is Fired

Earlier this week, several relevant organizations, from the Houston Police Officers’ Union to the local NAACP, had slammed Ashley Gonzalez’s racist rant. On Friday, Mayor John Whitmire reacted to the update in the Gonzalez investigation, per ABC13.

“The comments in the video recorded by former Houston Police Officer Ashley Gonzalez are outrageous and reprehensible. I was shocked and deeply disappointed to hear a Houston police officer use such foul and offensive language. Her actions do not reflect the values of our city or the Houston Police Department, nor the standards we expect from those sworn to serve and protect our community. Let me be clear: this behavior is unacceptable. I applaud HPD Chief Diaz for suspending Gonzalez when the department became aware of the video and firing her as soon as the state civil service process allowed. Let this incident serve as a warning to all City of Houston employees. There is zero tolerance for racism in my administration, and if you see it, report it immediately. I ask all Houstonians to rededicate ourselves to human rights and respect for others,” Mayor Whitmire said.

Social Media Reacts To HPD’s Swift Response To Racist Incident

The HPD update was viewed over 1.8 million times on X within a four-hour window. It also collected more than 8,500 likes and generated 400-plus comments. While some people seemed satisfied with the outcome, others questioned why HPD continued to pay her after relieving her from her duties earlier this week. Also, some X users are demanding HPD reopen cases involving Black people that Ashley was a part of. Houston PD has not said whether their investigation called for that step.

Meanwhile, others are hoping Ashley Gonzalez won’t be allowed to hold another position in law enforcement following her firing. Some also predicted what Ashley’s next steps will be.

Alan Cumming is opening up about his years-long friendship with Lisa Kudrow.

Cumming, 61, gushed about Kudrow, 62, while speaking to Us Weekly exclusively at the Time100 Gala on Thursday, April 23. The Traitors host shared his reaction to Kudrow’s tribute in Time’s list of the 100 Most Influential People of 2026.

“I didn’t know it was going to be her. … They don’t tell you. And so it was just such a lovely surprise,” he told Us. “And you know, everything that she said about me, I completely feel about her.”

In her tribute, Kudrow wrote that Cumming is “just as spectacular in person as he is on your television screen.”

“I mean, are you kidding? He steps into the room, and you just can’t help but think, ‘Yes. Glorious,’” the Friends alum continued. “Everything about him is thrilling. And yet, there’s something about him that makes you feel like you can take a deep, calming breath whenever he’s near. He’s so fully himself — so free, so authentic — that simply being around him feels like a celebration. It’s really no wonder everyone is so drawn to him.”

Kudrow added that watching Cumming host The Traitors is “so much fun, not only because he always looks fantastic, but because he plays such a great villain.”

“The Alan I know off-screen is sweet, bubbly, and friendly,” she concluded. “He chooses joy, he chooses glee, and he sees the wonderful in everything. He’s a phenomenal person and also, luckily for us, a brilliant performer. Alan can do anything and everything, and that’s really all there is to it.”

Amy Sussman/WireImage Lisa Kudrow is keen to set the record straight. After her Friends costar, Jennifer Aniston, recently claimed Kudrow, 60, “hated” when the show’s live audience laughed during filming, Kudrow clarified her true feelings to Entertainment Tonight. “No, that’s not exactly … no, no. It irritated me if they would laugh for too long,” […]

While speaking to Us, Cumming recalled the “great connection” he made with Kudrow while they worked together on the 1997 comedy film Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion.

“And we see each other sporadically, and work together sporadically. But I just always think of her as a really good friend,” he noted.

Cumming also recalled Kudrow hosting a panel for The Traitors in 2025, adding that he was “really moved” by her appearance at the event.

“It’s a lovely thing about knowing someone for a really long time, and having it be a genuine friendship,” he concluded.
