Jack Draper reveals how he escaped the tennis bubble after successful Davis Cup return

Published

on

Jack Draper revealed he has barely watched any tennis during his enforced sabbatical.

The British number one made his comeback from a near seven-month injury lay-off with a comfortable Davis Cup victory over Norway’s Viktor Durasovic in Oslo.

The complex “bone bruising” injury in his left arm meant Draper had to take the tough decision to miss last month’s Australian Open as he was not yet ready for five-set matches.

But rather than watch contemporaries Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner and Novak Djokovic in Melbourne, Draper took a step back from the sport.

“In all honesty, in this period. I haven’t really been following it too much,” he said. “It’s something I put my whole life into and so I knew that when this injury came about, I had to maybe take a step back and not be so intense with it.

“I think that’s helped me off the court and to keep on improving on the court as well, because tennis is a bubble and sometimes you can get kind of distracted, and that it’s all that matters in life.

“Whereas when you have this kind of injury, you have time out and I used it wisely, I think, to try and make sure that when I come back to tennis and my arm is OK, that I’m ready to go all the way again.”

Draper, who has played just one singles match since Wimbledon last year, needed just 59 minutes to wrap up a 6-2 6-2 win and give Great Britain a flying start in the first qualifying round.

It was hard to gauge precisely what Draper’s level is against Durasovic, ranked a lowly 313. However, eight aces, just 10 points dropped on serve and a healthy smattering of forehand winners was certainly an encouraging start.

“It’s been a long, long time since I’ve been able to compete on the match court and today was a great opportunity to do that,” he added.

“Obviously it’s been a difficult time for me, but I’m glad with the way I came back and I’m proud of my performance today.”

British number two Cameron Norrie, fresh from his run to the third round down under, had by far the tougher match against teenager Nicolai Budkov Kjaer, a former Wimbledon juniors champion, in the second singles rubber.

But the 30-year-old ground out a 6-4 6-4 win to put Great Britain 2-0 up going into day two of the first-qualifying round tie.

Leon Smith’s team can take an unassailable 3-0 lead if Wimbledon doubles champions Lloyd Glasspool and Julian Cash win the opening match on Friday afternoon.

Timberwolves prep for Pelicans by adding Ayo Dosunmu

Jaden McDaniels can breathe a sigh of relief.

The versatile forward heard his name mentioned in plenty of rumors as the Minnesota Timberwolves explored the idea of adding a star player before the trade deadline.

However, Giannis Antetokounmpo stayed put with the Milwaukee Bucks and McDaniels stayed put in Minneapolis, where the Timberwolves will play the New Orleans Pelicans on Friday night.

“It’s hard to block out,” McDaniels said before Thursday’s trade deadline. “It’s everywhere you go on your phone, you see something. I try. I’ve been through six deadlines, and I just keep it the same way every time.”

This time, McDaniels and the Timberwolves will welcome a new teammate.

Minnesota and several other teams failed to land the NBA’s biggest prize in Antetokounmpo, but the Timberwolves added much-needed talent and depth when they acquired Ayo Dosunmu from the Chicago Bulls before the deadline. In exchange, Minnesota parted with lightly used Rob Dillingham and Leonard Miller along with four second-round picks.

Dosunmu, 26, averaged a career-high 15.0 points along with 3.6 assists and 3.0 rebounds in 45 games for the Bulls this season. The fifth-year pro shoots 51.4% from the field and a career-best 45.1% from 3-point range.

It is not certain whether Dosunmu will join his new team in time for Friday’s game.

Whenever he arrives, he figures to come off the bench and play a prominent role in the Timberwolves’ rotation. He averaged 26.4 minutes primarily in a reserve role with Chicago this season, compared with 9.3 minutes per game for Dillingham with the Timberwolves.

As the Timberwolves prepare to welcome reinforcements, the Pelicans head to Minnesota without a trusted veteran. New Orleans traded Jose Alvarado, 27, to the New York Knicks on Thursday in exchange for Dalen Terry, two second-round picks and cash considerations.

Alvarado averaged 7.9 points and 3.1 assists in 41 games this season and provided dependable defense. Terry averaged 3.5 points and 1.3 assists in 34 games for the Bulls.

New Orleans rests near the bottom of the Western Conference standings and plots how more losing might benefit its future. The Pelicans have lost three games in a row, including a 141-137 overtime loss Wednesday at Milwaukee.

Pelicans interim coach James Borrego praised Trey Murphy III for his career-high 44-point performance, but said his team needed to do more on the other end of the court to stop the skid. The Bucks hit 60.9% from the field, which featured 21 of 47 shooting (44.7%) from 3-point range.

“It was our defense,” Borrego said. “Not enough resistance. (Our) point-of-attack defense was too weak, too soft. We’ve got to be better (defensively).”

The Timberwolves are coming off a 128-126 road win over the Toronto Raptors on Wednesday night. Minnesota has won five of its past six games.

Anthony Edwards will look to stay hot after scoring 30 points on 11-for-23 shooting against the Raptors. He added eight rebounds, five assists and three steals.

This is the third of four meetings between the Timberwolves and Pelicans this season.

Minnesota won the first two games as it held on for a 149-142 overtime win on Dec. 2 in New Orleans, then won the rematch two days later with a 125-116 verdict in New Orleans.

Pádraig Harrington set for 500th DP World Tour appearance in Qatar

Published

on

Dubliner Pádraig Harrington will make his 500th appearance on the DP World Tour when he when the 29th edition of the Qatar Masters at Doha Golf Club this week.

The three-time Major winner will become the 50th player in Tour history to reach that milestone, more than 30 years after making his debut at the 1995 Smurfit European Open.

Illustrious career

Harrington has won 43 professional titles in his illustrious career – 15 of which have come on the DP World Tour – and he has represented Europe six times in the Ryder Cup.

The Irish golfer has become prolific on the over-50s circuit, winning 11 times on the PGA TOUR Champions, and is the reigning U.S. Senior Open and ISPS HANDA Senior Open champion.

Commenting ahead of this week’s tournament, Pádraig Harrington said:

“I’m delighted to be back in Doha for the first time since 2003. It’s nice to come back to a venue you haven’t been for a long time to see the difference and what a great golf course it is. It’s in phenomenal condition and it’s a joy to be back. It’s amazing to see how much the course has changed and they’re putting back tees on nearly every hole which kind of suits it because the rough is heavy, the greens are firm and it’s a nice challenge.

Nice to get to 500

Discussing his DP World Tour achievement of 500 appearances, the Dubliner stated:

“500 appearances isn’t something you envisage or plan for but it’s nice to get there. I’ve probably played close to 800 tournaments in my 30-year professional career. I started a bit later than most people because I didn’t turn pro until I was 24. I’m happy to be out here playing on the DP World Tour and I’m still enjoying it.

“I couldn’t have dreamt of the career that I’ve had. I’m quite an optimist and that’s what I love about golf it always gives you that hope that you’re going to find the secret and I’m still doing that today.

Still loves the game

“I still have a pure love for the game. I’m fascinated by it, I enjoy it, I love coaching and thinking about the game. 20 years ago we pretended we weren’t golf nerds but I’m as biggest a golf nerd as you can get. I’m here now to try and be competitive and I know the only way I can do that is to enjoy it.”

Ben Lynch

Cormac Comerford

Cormac will compete in Alpine Skiing, with the Slalom being his favourite discipline. Thomas Maloney Westgård

Thomas is the veteran of the team, and is set to compete in his third Olympic Games, when he will become only the second man to ever compete in three winter games. He competes in the Cross Country events, with the 50km race his favourite discipline. His strong showing at AFCON, combined with his contract situation, had already sparked speculation about a possible move away from the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.

Nwabali’s contract with Chippa United is set to expire this summer, which allows him to negotiate and sign with another club as a free agent.
