Zach Galifianakis’ Panic Is Palpable in New Sneak Peek of AMC’s Most Outlandish Thriller [Exclusive]
In the world of AMC‘s buzzy new drama The Audacity, Silicon Valley is dominated by big egos with massive wallets and even bigger dreams of not just changing the world, but building the future, ethics be damned. However, the tech bros, billionaires, and other eccentric characters are really just deeply flawed humans deep down, and sometimes, they let those outsized egos boil over. That’s where Sarah Goldberg‘s JoAnne Felder comes into play. An ethics-damaged psychiatrist, she primarily works with Hypergnosis CEO Duncan Park (Billy Magnussen), but has built a successful career out of treating the upper crust. Ahead of Episode 3, Collider can exclusively share a new sneak peek that sees her responding to a slight crisis involving Zach Galifianakis‘ Carl Bardolph while also juggling family drama.
The footage opens on JoAnne rolling up to Carl’s house, where it’s been “Zero days since I stabbed someone.” Specifically, he stabbed Duncan in the face with a fork, not enough to seriously hurt the manic tech CEO, but enough to send him into a panic. All Carl really cares about is himself and seeing all his work in therapy go right down the drain after he let his intrusive thoughts about shooting Duncan “right between his sniveling little wormy eyes. As JoAnne tries to calm him down and set up an appointment, she gets a call from her ex-husband and is forced to juggle two men who absolutely try her patience at once. Now, she has an accusatory Ethan (Patrick Gilmore) in her ear asking about their son, who’s apparently not at school despite her tracker saying so, and completely misunderstanding her metaphors as digs at Orson (Everett Blunck).
Though the focus is often on the Silicon Valley movers and shakers in the tech satire, JoAnne shoulders a lot throughout The Audacity. The struggling therapist is very good at her job, keeping people like Duncan and Carl in check and cleaning up their messes while still balancing her own troubles in life. Yet, in working with Duncan, she winds up caught in a scandal over the exploitation of personal data. Blackmail and insider trading keep her tied to the hip of the data mining CEO as he pursues profit and power and, perhaps, a bit of personal redemption while navigating the eccentric tech bubble. Lucy Punch, Simon Helberg, Rob Corddry, Meaghan Rath, Paul Adelstein, Thailey Roberge, Ava Marie Telek, and Randall Park also star.
‘The Audacity’ Is Already Rewarding AMC’s Confidence
Created by Emmy-winning Succession writer Jonathan Glatzer, The Audacity marks AMC’s return to the prestige television realm after having previously delivered era-defining hits like Mad Men, Breaking Bad, and The Walking Dead. That history is hard to live up to, but so far, the blend of dark comedy and tech drama has critics and audiences tuning in. The series owns a Certified Fresh 78% Rotten Tomatoes score and even managed to dethrone the ever-popular Dark Winds on the platform’s streaming charts. Collider’s Shawn Van Horn particularly praised Magnussen’s performance as the perfectly punchable Park in his 7/10 review, writing, “The Audacity isn’t perfect, but the effort Magnussen gives nearly is.”
It’s a big win so far for AMC, which has been profoundly confident in what they have with its gritty Silicon Valley show. The series earned a rare Season 2 renewal ahead of its premiere, and the network went to great lengths to get its first episode in front of as many eyes as possible, including posting it entirely on TikTok in three-minute shorts. The inaugural run is far from over, but so far, everything’s coming up Duncan Park.
The Audacity Episode 3 airs this Sunday, April 26, at 9 p.m. ET/PT. AMC+ subscribers can also watch it now and see new episodes a full week early. Check out our exclusive sneak peek in the player above.

The Raunchy Film Career Of Jerry Seinfeld’s Infamous On-Screen Girlfriend
By Brian Myers
| Published

Fans of the hit 90s series Seinfeld are all in on the running joke surrounding the title character’s lack of romantic commitment. It seemed like the New York-based comedian had a new lady every episode, with many observers deeming these characters as Jerry’s “flame of the week.”
Though his 70+ short-term relationships were far less than the 180 episodes of NBC’s “show about nothing,” an average of one new companion every 2.5 installments is quite impressive. Of all the ladies to experience this short-term role, one in particular has a film resume that she admittedly regrets.

Seinfeld followers will remember Athena Massey as Jerry’s girlfriend Melanie, who gets the ax from the show’s star because he can’t stand how she eats her peas at dinner (one at a time). What some might be surprised to know is that Massey wrapped production on the soft-core movie Undercover Heat only a few months earlier, typecasting her as an erotic thriller star.
How Athena Massey Became A Skinemax Star
Massey had been earning a living as a model during the 1980s and early 90s. She had a strong desire to break into the film world, landing her first bit of screen time in a 1988 music video by the Seattle-based grunge band Soundgarden. Bit parts in television shows soon followed, including episodes of Doogie Howser, M.D., the daytime soap The Young and the Restless in 1992, and an additional music video performance for the band P.M. Dawn.

In 1995, Massey was offered the leading role in filmmaker Gregory Dark’s steamy project, Undercover Heat. Dark had developed a career in adult film the previous decade, but was transitioning into the Skinemax world under the name Gregory Hippolyte. The project would mark Massey’s first time in a starring role and cement her reputation as a B-movie regular.
Undercover Heat Has Massey Solving Crime In A Brothel

Undercover Heat was a far cry from the adult films that Dark served at the helm of in the past, but still managed to give viewers a steamy 90 minutes of gratuitous skin and simulated intimacy. Massey plays the part of Cindy Hannen, a cop who takes an undercover assignment to help solve a murder.
In a script that seems almost standard for late-night 1990s Cinemax, Hannen’s job leads her to a brothel, where she must pose as a sex worker so that the killer can be unmasked and brought to justice. Aside from a handful of sex scenes featuring Massey and several of her co-stars, viewers also get a look at Jerry’s future girlfriend in full bondage gear.

As the film progresses, Hannen discovers she is beginning to get a thrill from her undercover work, which could jeopardize the investigation. No spoilers here on the ending, not that the plot and dialogue alone are what many of the film’s viewers were tuning in for to begin with.
Athena Has Regrets, But Ended Up On Star Trek And In Your Computer

Massey later stated in an interview that she regretted the part, feeling it put her in a box she couldn’t fully escape. The rest of the decade saw the actress appearing in a handful of television shows, including Star Trek: Voyager in 1996 and Nash Bridges in 1999. Massey also had small roles in major Hollywood productions, including the hit Eddie Murphy film The Nutty Professor.
Athena did make several B-movies after Undercover Heat. In 1996, she co-starred in the Roger Corman production Shadow of a Scream, followed by a 1997 remake of Corman’s 1957 sci-fi cult film Not of This Earth, retitled as Star Portal.

Massey performed in two more raunchy Corman projects, Termination Man in 1998 and Harold Robbins’ Body Parts in 2001. The latter film was directed by Corman’s nephew, Craig Corman, and produced by his brother, Gene.
Her career on film ended in the early years of the new millennium. Athena did appear in a handful of music videos after her final film role in 2001, and made a living appearing on interactive CD-ROMs.

Latto and her GloRilla gagged their fanbases just days ago with a sweet baby bump photo! Then on Friday, the girlies were turning up their new song ‘GOMF.’ Both ladies didn’t hold back on the track, but Glo turned heads towards her sister, Victoria Woods, aka BroRilla or Scar Face, with a few lyrics. Was it a diss or nah? Fans are still debating!

GloRilla Talks About A “Begging Stud” In ‘GOMF’ Verse
As mentioned, Glo seemed to really address the drama with her family in the track that she teased earlier this week. In ‘GOFM’s chorus with Latto, the Memphis rapper appeared to take jabs at Victoria Woods, by referencing her apparent sexuality.
“Get out my face, ho (Ho), beggin’ for change, ho (Yup). Get you a hustle and get that p*ssy out your face, ho (Yup). You coulda been anything, it’s a million ways to get paid, ho (Yup). But you ain’t sh*t but a freaky stud that’s laced.”
Also, her interlude touches on taking care of her family and other long-discussed topics, from BBL claims to her style switch-up.
“Why she be lyin’ like be in the gym? We know that’s a BBL (Haha). Yo, why she keep touchin’ her face? You ain’t ugly, you just broke. I heard she don’t take care of her family, I would never (Right). She need her own style, she always tryna copy the next b*tch (Tuh),” GloRilla raps in the interlude.
Glo Teases Future Baby With Brandon Ingram
Meanwhile, GloRilla’s verse accused others of being pissed at her while she makes money and minds her business. “All I did was glow up on ’em, why you mad I’m poppin’ sh*t? It be the ones that can’t do it tellin’ me what I should’ve did,” Glo also raps. A few bars later, GloRilla said two things she doesn’t give out are money and second chances and teased having a baby with boyfriend, Brandon Ingram.
“Told Brandon I’ma have his son next time he leave it in (I stamp it). I’m out of town playin’ with my rose on FaceTime and I’m serious (Uh). I won’t clear up sh*t, I feel like Tommy, b*tch, believe it (B*tch, believe it). They constantly pokin’ the bear, one, two, three, release ’em (Yup),” GloRilla raps.
Fans Weigh In On ‘GOMF’
13 hours in, Latto and GloRilla’s song has over 54,000 views on YouTube and more than 500 comments. Fans are weighing in on everything from the bars, to the collab itself and the snappy clap backs at internet rumors, and in Glo’s case, her family drama and future baby plans.
“Yall hating hard.. GloRilla went hard on this. Everytime these 2 link together, they make a hit,” @LoveByNicole wrote.
“Glo is not done with her sister 😂😂😂😂,” @talabiAyomide-07d commented.
“I’m glad she’s addressing everything 😭😭,” @EX3STINCE added.
“‘A freaky stud thats laced’ omg… now gloria! 😂😂😂😂,” @takeesymone6650 weighed in.
“Glo said she gone have Brandon son next time he leave it in! Oh lawwwd glooooo😂😂😂😂,” @daempressqueen commented.
@avbahfwoG added, “Get’um Glo! Somebody should’ve warned Brorilla cuz she thought BIG GLO was still little sis! She has GLOWED all the way up and isn’t going for anything! Those were her old ways! Keep popping your stuff!Yeah Glo!!!”
“They ATE THIS TF DOWNNNNN BISHHHHH WHATTTTTTTTTT,” @goldmouthrony said.
“I don think I heard right. Did Glo say “Brandon and I might have a son it’s we leave it in” ?? 😂😂😂🔥 Ate,” @ZaneleENgondo wrote.
As previously reported, Victoria Woods has gone viral in recent months for calling out her rich sister, alleging she doesn’t do her part for their family. Most recently, Victoria accused Glo of putting on a show by taking their dad to a basketball game, but not paying his light bill. BroRilla, her internet nickname, later clapped back at the people suggesting she should use her new limelight to step up, too.

The Elden Ring Movie Must Focus On One Key Character To Be Great
By TeeJay Small
| Published

For as long as video games have been around, studio execs have been pouring money into bad video game adaptations. Films like Uncharted, Mortal Kombat, and 1993’s Super Mario Bros are known far and wide for tarnishing the reputation of their source material, leaving fans wary of the entire genre. Do you remember when Assassin’s Creed got a film adaptation back in 2016? Me neither. So, when it was announced that an Elden Ring movie was in the works, I immediately became skeptical.
I’m not saying that an Elden Ring movie is doomed to failure. My concern is that the source material is so large, sprawling, and overwhelming that it couldn’t possibly be contained in a 2-3 hour film. The Lands Between can barely be explored in 160 hours for most players, especially if you take the DLC into consideration. Luckily, I think there’s one way to condense the material into the size of a single movie, and still manage to please fans far and wide.
Focus On General Radahn

For starters, the Elden Ring movie should focus on General Radahn as the main protagonist. He’s already a fan-favorite boss from the original game, and his backstory is arguably the most interesting part of the lore. In case you’re not familiar with the source material, Radahn is a demigod, a decorated wartime leader, and a scholar responsible for studying gravitational magic. Before the events of the video game kick off, he becomes aware of an existential threat in the stars and utilizes his gravitational skills to single-handedly hold back an onslaught of meteorites and Lovecraftian alien invaders.
During the shattering, the inciting incident that kicks off the narrative of Elden Ring, Radahn was challenged by his sister Malenia. The two met in an open field, where they and their respective armies engaged in a gruesome battle for the family throne. When it became clear that their fight had reached a standstill, Malenia effectively set off a nuclear warhead, spreading a debilitating status effect known as scarlet rot to the entire region.

When the player character enters the Lands Between, Radahn is hanging on by a thread. His mind and body are infected with scarlet rot, causing him to shuffle around the battlefield as a shadow of his former self, feasting on the corpses of those claimed by the war. The player character then joins an event known as the Radahn Festival, where champions attempt to put the demigod out of his misery, and give him a proper warrior’s death. The boss fight against General Radahn is one of the best parts of the whole game, and it often requires the player to summon multiple NPC spawns in order to complete.
Once Radahn finally perishes, the meteors descend upon the Lands Between, revealing that he was still holding them back even in his weakened state, and doing so while fighting off hordes of tenured enemies. For my money, the story can end right there, and I’ll walk out of the theater grinning ear to ear. I’m obviously leaving a lot of key lore points out, but those are the broad strokes.

Radahn’s life story also has a perfect three-act structure. The Elden Ring film can open with his studies in the Sellia school of sorcery, then transition into his fight with his sister, and climax with the Radahn festival. The final moments of the film can serve as a bittersweet reflection on his legacy and set up a sequel as the remaining warriors in the Lands Between continue their fight in the wars to come.
Currently, very little is known about the Elden Ring movie. I’m hoping they don’t try to tackle the entire game and relegate Radahn to a footnote, but that is sort of my expectation. I do know that Nick Offerman is confirmed to be in the cast, and that he would make an ideal candidate to bring the Scarscourge general to life on the big screen. As the production progresses, we’re sure to get some key updates.

Netflix’s New No. 1 Streaming Show Is This Disturbing Cult Drama
This brand-new Netflix original has already shot to the number 1 spot in the site’s top 10 chart — and for good reason.
Unchosen stars Sex Education‘s Asa Butterfield in a gripping psychological thriller story about women seeking freedom from an oppressive cult. Handmaid’s Tale vibes anyone?
Watch With Us loves a good cult show, and we couldn’t be more thrilled to sink our teeth into Unchosen.
Read on for our top three reasons why the show is unmissable.
If You’re a ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ Fan, You’ll Like ‘Unchosen’

Molly Windsor in Unchosen. Netflix
If you’re looking for something to fill the void left by The Handmaid’s Tale and don’t find that the spinoff The Testaments is quite quenching your thirst, then Unchosen is the series for you. The show follows a fictional cult called Fellowship of the Divine, led by a charismatic man called Mr. Phillips (Christopher Eccleston). In this community, technology is banned, and women are confined to their homes and subservient to their husbands. The series focuses on one couple in particular, Adam (Butterfield) and Rosie (Molly Windsor), the latter of whom begins having second thoughts about her highly constrained life after an incident in the forbidden woods.
While there is no infertility epidemic in the world of Unchosen like in The Handmaid’s Tale, female characters are made to wear similarly modest garments and head coverings, and are at the sexual whims of all the men in the community, while the process of giving birth is also a communal experience, as with the handmaids in Gilead. Of course, the realities of living in such a highly oppressed society are bound to give way to thoughts of rebellion, and after Rosie comes across a tall, dark stranger in the woods, these feelings are thrust into sharp, life-changing relief.
The Netflix Drama Is Based on Real-Life U.K. Cults
There are currently at least 2,000 cults operating in the United Kingdom, and Unchosen creator Julie Gearey used some of them as inspiration while writing her show — she even reached out to real-life former members of such cults via the internet while doing research for Unchosen. Jim Loach, the series’ director, noted that Gearey grew up in an area of England where children she attended school with had parents who were active members of cults. One of the most famous cults in that particular area is the Christian community of Bruderhof, where members live similarly modest lives to those of the disciples of the Fellowship of the Divine.
Additionally, Butterfield watched the BBC documentary on Bruderhof in preparation for his role, along with documentaries on the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church, a group perceived by many as a cult that dates back 200 years and boasts over 55,000 members. While the Fellowship of the Divine is a wholly fictionalized cult, Gearey’s research, testimonials from former members who escaped cults and Gearey’s own personal experiences of associating with the children of cult members, all deeply informed the creation of the cult for Unchosen.
‘Unchosen’ Has a Top-Notch Cast

Fra Fee and Asa Butterfield in Unchosen. Netflix
In addition to Butterfield, the cast of Unchosen is exceedingly impressive, even if you might not know some of them on a first-name basis. Eccleston has been praised for his role as Mr. Phillips in particular, so impressive at playing a manipulative cult leader that it feels like he might have been one in a former life. Meanwhile, Windsor (who viewers may recognize from the film She Said) gives an incredibly earnest performance as the conflicted Rosie. But all three of the lead young actors, Windsor, Butterfield and Fra Free (as handsome newcomer Sam) are perfectly cast, and feel natural in their roles as each of their characters progresses throughout the season.
Butterfield in particular does a stellar job playing against type as the domineering and cruel Adam, since many viewers are likely most familiar with the young actor from his performance in Netflix’s Sex Education, in which he plays a demure and well-meaning high school student. The rest of the major supporting cast is rounded out by Siobhan Finneran (The Damned) and Alexa Davies (Harlots and Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again).

Netflix’s Slick 2-Part Series Is Built for Your Next Weekend Binge
Million Dollar Secret is the kind of show that you don’t mean to get into, then end up all in. This is a style that it took and improved for season two, making it feel as if it were made specifically for binge-watching on the weekend. This second season delivers what most reality shows do not provide: a fast-paced, contained experience that does not drag or stall and does not require several weeks of your time to feel good about watching.
Fourteen participants enter a luxurious estate, where one participant will receive a secret $1 million prize; however, the other participants must discover who that participant is before they are voted out. Instead of everyone chasing the same prize, one player starts with it—and their entire goal becomes survival through deception. That inversion creates a constant tension that never really lets up, because every conversation carries a second meaning and every choice risks exposure.
‘Million Dollar Secret’ Turns a Familiar Format Into Something More Unstable
The popular Netflix show has some similar elements that you can compare to other social deduction shows (e.g., The Traitors; The Mole). Those comparisons are valid because they involve elements of forming alliances to cast doubt on someone else and of playing the game strategically to misdirect or deceive. But Million Dollar Secret separates itself through instability. Because the money can transfer to a new player if the current “Millionaire” is eliminated, the power structure never settles. No one gets to dominate for long, and no one can rely on a fixed role within the game.
That design choice does more than keep things unpredictable. It forces players into a constant state of recalibration, where yesterday’s logic stops working the moment the game resets. A correct read in one episode can become useless in the next. As a result of needing to be in line with others rather than aligned for a cause, the alliances formed will not last. Therefore, the overall view of the competition is that it’s a collapsible one with all participants struggling to keep their feet on the ground, but the ground is constantly moving away from them.
The second season portrays the instability of this environment much more accurately than the first season did. Contestants enter the game with a better understanding of how it works, which makes them more aware of how they are perceived relative to other contestants and, in turn, heightens the overall tension and excitement in the drama. Contestants are now analyzing every word and inferring all possible alternative actions of one another, and in some instances, attempting to sabotage their own game plans by trying to out think other contestants way too early in the season.
Strategy, Performance, and the Pressure to Lie
Every player, whether they hold the money or not, is forced into a version of themselves that feels slightly artificial. The Millionaire has to act normally while hiding something enormous, while the others have to act confident in reads that are often guesses. Over time, those performances start to crack, and that’s where the show finds its most compelling moments.
The “secret agendas” play a key role in pushing those cracks to the surface. The idea of players being assigned odd or specific tasks, such as repeating things, following other players around, and doing things designed to attract attention, creates situations in which players are unable to act normally. There are some uncomfortable moments that are intentionally awkward due to their design, as these situations create controlled chaos in social dynamics that might otherwise settle into specific patterns of behavior and provide no basis for action in real time.
While not every item achieved the same effect, there are larger-group challenges that feel more like a means of generating clues and moving power than an innovative segment. Even these segments help form a more significant whole; the focus of the entire format is on interaction rather than spectacle. The format relies on how people interpret each other and not on how well they perform activities.
Why Season 2 Feels Built for a Weekend Watch
The way Season 2 is structured makes it particularly appealing for marathon watching. With episodes released in two parts, the series naturally breaks into digestible chunks without losing momentum. Each of these sections has enough story momentum to feel like a complete section, but they also build on one another and lead into the next set of episodes. This design of the show lends itself to a rhythm that emphasizes continuous forward progression over the spectacle of individual episodes.
What allows Million Dollar Secret to be enjoyed by viewers for long sessions is anything but pacing. There is room for tension to mount but never become overly tired. The stakes are clear, the rules are consistent, and the constant shifting of power ensures that the narrative continues to move forward. Each time the viewer is introduced to a new angle, suspect, or decision that could change everything, it adds to their enjoyment of the series, drawing them deeper into the plot and encouraging them to watch the next episode.

Sydney Sweeney’s Quotes About Nude Euphoria Scenes
Sydney Sweeney has been candid about what goes into stripping down for nude scenes in Euphoria and other projects.
After Euphoria premiered in 2019, Sweeney, who plays Cassie, opened up about the downsides of being naked on screen.
“I don’t think as many people took me seriously in Euphoria because I took my shirt off,” she told Cosmopolitan in February 2022. “When I saw The Voyeurs for the first time, I wondered if I’d done too much. I researched celebrities who have done nude scenes, trying to make myself feel better.”
Sweeney continued: “There are hour-long compilations of world-famous male actors with nude scenes who win Oscars and get praised for that work. But the moment a woman does it, it degrades them. They’re not actresses, they just take off their tops so they can get a role. There’s such a double standard and I really hope that I can have a part in changing that.”
In addition to the hit HBO series, Sweeney has taken risks in The Voyeurs, The Housemaid, Anyone But You and more. Keep scrolling for Sweeney’s most candid quotes about onscreen nudity:
Sydney Sweeney Compares Nude Scenes to Real Life
Sweeney told Teen Vogue in March 2022 about the risqué scenes in Euphoria, saying, “We all get naked in real life. We show this character’s life and what they’re going through. Cassie’s body is a different form of communication for her.”
Sydney Sweeney Wants to Feel Comfortable on Set

Sweeney praised Euphoria creator Sam Levinson for supporting her behind the scenes.
“Sam is amazing,” she told The Independent in January 2022. “There are moments where Cassie was supposed to be shirtless and I would tell Sam, ‘I don’t really think that’s necessary here.’ [And] he was like, ‘OK, we don’t need it.’ When I didn’t want to do [a nude scene], he didn’t make me.”
How Sydney Sweeney Put Distance Between the Scenes
Sweeney confessed to Cosmopolitan in 2022 that she viewed her nude scenes as the character getting naked, saying, “I’m so disconnected from it. When I get tagged in Cassie’s … nudes, it feels like me looking at their nudes, not Sydney’s nudes.”
The actress went on to explain that “when you film one of these scenes, it’s so technical and not romantic,” adding, “There are people staring at you, pads between you; there’s nipple covers and weird sticker thongs all up your butt.”
Sydney Sweeney’s Approach to Telling Her Loved Ones

“My mom visited me on set at the time, so she knew the story and I talked to her a lot about it — my dad didn’t,” Sweeney told CBS Sunday in 2023 about filming Euphoria. “Yeah, I didn’t prepare my dad. At all.”
Sweeney weighed in on her family’s reaction to her racy projects.
“I mean, how do you bring it up in conversation? And also, when I talk to my dad, it’s usually not about work. We talk, like, father-daughter conversations. He decided he was going to watch it, without telling me, with his parents,’” she explained. “My dad and my grandpa turned it off and walked out. But my grandma is a big supporter of mine. She’s a big fan of mine. Actually I bring her, usually, all over the world to my different sets and I make her an extra.”
Sydney Sweeney Comparing Nudity to Power
In a 2025 interview with W Magazine, Sweeney reflected on not experiencing stage fright, saying, “I don’t get nervous. [I] gained so much confidence and self-awareness on Euphoria. I think that the female body is a very powerful thing. And I’m telling my character’s story, so I owe it to them to tell it well and to do what needs to be done.”

He wrote, “I’m so grateful for you. You teach me gentleness by simply being the delicate YOU the Most High crafted you to be. What’s on the inside of you attracts me deeper than what’s seen externally. I honor you deeply. Words can’t truly explain how much I love you. You’ve pulled me out of my curse. You showed me I can have a person in moments I thought a woman for me was nonexistent. You are my reflection, my mirror, my other half. In our past life, we were distant lovers, but in this one, we were husband and wife.”
In February, the rapper followed up with an appreciation post filled with some of their memories. NLE Choppa captioned it, “Last 7 months I’ve been in love with you #appreciationpost,”

Life On The Red Planet? Newly Discovered Mars Molecules
By TeeJay Small
| Published

Since the dawn of mankind, humans have looked up at the sky and wondered if we were alone in the universe. As complex astronomy and space travel became possible, we’ve begun unraveling the mysteries of our solar system, though we’ve had very little in the way of straight answers. Now, according to a scientific study published in Nature Communications, NASA scientists may have uncovered the first concrete evidence of life on other planets. If the current hypothesis is correct, the Curiosity rover has recovered organic molecules which have been preserved on Mars for over 3 billion years.
Per the scientific journal, five of seven newly found molecules identified in a Mars soil sample can be linked to the building blocks of life. The materials, which were smushed into a dried-up lakebed near Mars’ equator, may be native to the big red planet, or they may have been carried by a crashed meteorite billions of years ago. Either way, the robot’s findings suggest that microbial life could have formed based on these molecules, and even thrived.
An Exceedingly Hostile Environment

While discussing these findings with The Guardian, University College London’s Professor Andrew Coates explained “[Mars] had all the conditions for life to start there when life was starting on Earth. There’s no known reason why it shouldn’t have started on Mars as well.” These days, there’s no need to wonder why creatures don’t inhabit Mars, as the planet’s surface is exceedingly hostile. The lack of and Earth-like atmosphere means that the planet is constantly getting blasted with powerful radiation, and temperatures are known to drop below -100 degrees Celsius when the sun sets.
In the past, skeptics have been content to write-off life on Mars as a fringe theory. Still, recent research suggests that the planet was once home to flowing water, meaning Mars’ atmosphere could have supported life long before humans became the predominant species on Earth. University of Florida astrogeologist Amy Williams is credited with leading the Curiosity mission that found these new organic molecules, strengthening her belief that life could have persisted on the red planet more recently than previously theorized.

Professor Williams has stated “For a long time, we thought that all organic matter was going to be seriously degraded by that harsh radiation environment. It’s really exciting to see [that] large complex material can survive in the subsurface environment.” Even with this exciting new information, Williams has cautioned that the molecules themselves are not DNA. Strictly speaking, she claims the molecules are “definitely a building block to how DNA is made now. But it is truly just the bricks, not the house.”
Any way you slice it, this rover discovery is extremely exciting. With any luck, we won’t have to go to the trouble of sending Matt Damon up to Mars to figure out what’s going on up there. Soon enough, we might have concrete proof of little green men, who evolved around the same time as dinosaurs on Earth.
