Alex Pereira is still the UFC light heavyweight champion after UFC 307, but he was tested by a game Khalil Rountree. In the end, “Poatan” changed the tide of the fight, and in the fourth round, Pereira delivered one of the most brutal finishing sequences in quite some time of the incredibly tough challenger.

Round 1

Pereira hops across the ring and throws a high kick, nearly tripping as Rountree grabs it. Rountree quick to fire back with punches. He’s staying springy as Pereira searches for an angle to strike. Leg kick from Pereira, Rountree hits a left hand.

Pereira throws out a counter right. Rountree standing with him, he looks poised to land a KO blow himself. Pereira with a stinging leg kick. Pereira looking to counter now. Rountree blocks a high kick. Rountree with a glancing right. He doesn’t look intimidated.

Left hand by Rountree connects again. Rountree catches a kick, but misses on the sweep attempt. Rountree scores with a right. Another left from Rountree gets through. Pereira punishes the leg with a kick.

Round 2

Pereira again quick to take center, but he lets Rountree come to him this time. Rountree is still making good use of that left hand. He blocks a kick and scores with the left again. Pereira is avoiding the more powerful punches, but that left is giving him problems.

Counter left by Pereira and Rountree didn’t like that. Leg kick slowed Rountree down. Pereira working the jab. He lands a teep to the stomach. Rountree throws a right and circles. It’s the champion controlling the range though.

Pereira misses a high kick and Rountree makes him pay with a right hand. Looked like Pereira was wobbled, but probably just a balance issue, don’t think that will be scored a knockdown. Pereira’s jab has been money all round. Rountree risks it and lunges forward to connect with a straight left. Right hand from Pereira. High kick by Rountree, Pereira shakes it off.

Round 3

Two good lefts by Rountree to open the round. Pereira has to respect that power. Jab by Pereira. Rountree goes to the body with a punch and scores. Glancing high kick by Pereira. Left hook by Pereira, followed by a right and a jab. Rountree fires back to keep him honest.

Hard leg kick from Pereira, and another. Rountree sneaks in another body shot as he absorbs a leg kick. Pereira wants to walk him down. Rountree with a counter left. Jab by Pereira. Rountree hits a right and circles away. He’s not letting Pereira set him up for anything devastating. Pereira pressuring with the jab. He’s kicking Rountree’s leg out.

Rountree getting a little desperate with his winging punches. Pereira hits a crisp combo and a clinch knee to close the round.

Round 4

Pereira’s jab is lightning fast. Straight right scores for the champion, then a leg kick. Rountree eats a big jab and he’s feeling this accumulated damage. Pereira putting it on a bloodied Rountree now.

Rountree just throwing back, he’s eating big shots, but he wants to land a KO blow. Pereira jabbing his face off and timing power punches. This could be the end. Big right from Pereira and Rountree is doing what he can to survive. More hard punches from the champion, blood just running down Rountree’s face and body. He has to last another 90 seconds and even if he does, corner might want to throw in the towel.

Some amazing heart being shown by Rountree, but he is being battered. Pereira doing what he can to end this, somehow Rountree isn’t going down. Goddard watching the action closely, he could stop it, but Rountree is still throwing punches.

Pereira pours it on. Rountree crumbles. And still.

SALT LAKE CITY – On a night on which judging left many viewers scratching their heads, Dana White was right there with them.

Following UFC 307 on Saturday in Salt Lake City, White admitted he was not a fan of some of the scorecards turned in.

“The judging tonight was atrocious,” White told MMA Junkie and other reporters after the event at Delta Center. “I felt like I was at a boxing match in Ireland tonight.”

The judging wasn’t the only regulatory topic that entered the public discourse during Saturday’s fights. While White said he missed the highly-criticized officiating by local referee Dave Seljestad, he added that UFC senior vice president of regulatory affairs Marc Ratner indicated his displeasure at actions taken during the fight between Cesar Almeida and Ihor Potieria.

The main card bout between Mario Bautista and Jose Aldo also became a hot topic. Aldo was repeatedly smothered by Bautista against the fence, which caused his former rival Conor McGregor to become irate on social media.

McGregor took exception with the idea of stalling and proposed that a clock be installed to limit the amount of inactivity that could occur before a separation.

White agreed that protocols should be adjusted to promote more action, though doesn’t think a clock is necessary.

“I always think that the referees should be more active on that, 100 percent, especially when somebody keeps doing it to stall. You guys aren’t going to f*cking let up on this, are you? I guess we’ll get into it. If you’re judging a guy on control or this or that, if you’re not trying to fight, how do you win the fight? If you’re looking at attempted takedowns, then what about stuffing the takedowns. Just madness.”

“… When you can tell that the guy definitely doesn’t want to stand and strike and just wants to stall against the fence, yes, the refs, that’s their job. When they see it continually happening and that the guy is not trying to win the fight, then you keep breaking them up.”

Fans, fighters, and media were left in awe at the light heavyweight champion’s latest performance against Khalil Rountree Jr. in the UFC 307 main event. Pereira and Rountree fought tooth-and-nail before Pereira put the bloodied challenger away with a brutal flurry of strikes in the fourth round of Saturday’s UFC 307 main event.

From the moment Pereira walked out to the octagon to their across-the-cage face-off to the bloody battle that ensued and the unforgettable finish, it was yet another epic moment authored by “Poatan.”

Unsurprisingly, social media was abuzz with reactions, including UFC star Conor McGregor who called for a dream fight that fans has left fans salivating: Pereira vs. heavyweight champion and light heavyweight GOAT Jon Jones.

“Poatan vs. Bones,” McGregor wrote on social media.

Others also reacted passionately to the show-closing performance, including Max Holloway, Renato Moicano, and Gilbert Burns, no strangers to thrilling fights themselves.
