Joe Root overtakes Sir Alastair Cook to become England’s all-time leading Test run-scorer
Joe Root has overtaken Sir Alastair Cook to become England’s highest Test run-scorer of all time.
Root eclipsed Cook’s tally of 12,472 Test runs when he hit an elegant straight drive back past Aamer Jamal to reach 71 against Pakistan on day three of the first Test in Multan.
The 33-year-old, who is playing in his 147th Test, has done it in 14 Tests fewer than Cook, and now sits fifth on the all-time list.
He made his Test debut against India in Nagpur in 2012 and since then has hit 34 Test centuries, with a top score of 254 against Pakistan.
Sheffield-born Root, who captained England in a record 64 Tests, is now only behind India’s Rahul Dravid, South Africa’s Jacques Kallis, Australia’s Ricky Ponting and Sachin Tendulkar, also of India.
The legendary Tendulkar, who played in 200 Tests, tops the list with 15,921 runs, but Root could eclipse that mark if he continues in the same vein of form over the next few years.
The Yorkshire right-hander is in some of the best form of his career – averaging 61 since the beginning of 2023.

Proposed gaelic football rules changes – all you need to know ahead of interprovincial series
The committee has also been working on additional proposals which it believes would further embolden the ‘seven core enhancements’.
Tactical fouling, such as preventing free-kicks being taken quickly, would result in the ball being move forward a whopping 50 metres as opposed to the current 20, with player dissent following refereeing decisions being similarly punished.
What’s being described as “aggressive dissent” from the dugouts or sideline would also result in a 13-metre free being awarded against that team.
It’s also proposed that black cards would be given to any players deemed to have contributed to a melee, unless they were attempting to remove a player from the melee, while any head to head contact, whether intentional or unintentional, would be a red-card offence.
The additional proposals include increasing the amount of substitutions from five to six plus the introduction of a stop clock, which has been in use in women’s gaelic football for some time.
The committee is still deliberating whether the hooter sounding would conclude the game or whether the team in possession would be allowed to carry on until the ball goes dead.

Ronnie O’Sullivan could face women’s world No1 in historic snooker showdown in next match after English Open shock
RONNIE O’SULLIVAN’S next match is set to be against the record-breaking women’s world No1.
The Rocket has not been at the table since his first round shock loss to He Guoqiang at the English Open on September 17.
O’Sullivan was going to play in the British Open and Wuhan Open after the defeat – only to pull out of both tournaments for medical reasons.
The 48-year-old’s calendar sees him head to Belfast next for the Northern Ireland Open.
But reports say organisers are expecting him to withdraw from this event too.
O’Sullivan‘s long-awaited comeback would then be at the International Championships in China.
The draw has already been done for the tournament that gets underway on November 3 and the legend will face Mink Nutcharut.
She is the current women’s No1 and the only ever female to record a 147.
The 24-year-old star from Thailand recorded her first ever World Snooker Tour win at the Saudi Arabia Masters when she beat Kusai Hamed earlier this year.

It will be the first time O’Sullivan has ever played against a woman.
Nutcharut shot to fame two years again when she won a mixed doubles title alongside Neil Robertson.
On the difference between men and women in snooker, Nutcharut said: “There are some elements of strength involved – such as the force behind a strike.
“But I think that with practice, it’s very possible for women to dominate over men in snooker and that’s exciting.”
Inside Ronnie’s colourful career
FROM his lightning breaks to blasts at officials, Ronnie O’Sullivan has fired snooker into the spotlight.

BBC Green Sport Awards: Andrew ‘Ace’ Buchan
That’s the impact. Buchan has not just achieved a clean-up in his own back yard – he is effecting change across great swathes of an enormous country.
Not to mention the $25,000 (£18,670) he simply gave away to Australia’s independent Climate Council after being handed the cash by the World Surf League for his ocean advocacy.
Three children, remember. And he has the conviction to do that.
But for all the effort and negotiations, there have been attempts to start gas exploration on the New South Wales coast., external
“It’s definitely a hot-button issue in Australia,” says Buchan. “We have this conservative side of government pushing for gas and we clearly know that’s not the right choice. Australia has the ability to be a renewal superpower if we can harness the will to do that.
“But it’s not just fighting those battles in my own back yard. It’s about taking a global approach.
“If we combat climate change on a global level, we need big solutions. Hopefully we can safeguard all parts of the ocean.
“I want to come to a place where the coastline is hopefully protected for generations to come.
“We possess a lot of solutions to these problems – it’s about harnessing the political and social will to implement them.
“Hopefully, collectively, as a human race we can enact those things together and move towards a much more positive greener, bluer world to live in and enjoy.”
