Chris Evans’ Dystopian Sci-Fi Film Is Suddenly Clicking With ‘Silo’ Fans on Free Streaming

Published

on

A post-apocalyptic sci-fi series, when done right, should hook you in, leave you with lingering questions, mounting curiosity, and a sense of unease that keeps you glued to its fictional dystopia. If there’s any show that has nailed that hard, it is Apple TV‘s Silo. With its success, the appetite for similarly high-concept, thought-provoking sci-fi has only grown. Fortunately, stories built around rigid hierarchies and claustrophobic futures are nothing new to film. One Chris Evans–led sci-fi blockbuster that hits many of the same thematic notes has recently resurfaced on streaming and is rapidly climbing the charts as a free-to-watch hit.

Silo follows Juliette Nichols (Rebecca Ferguson), an engineer living among the remnants of humanity inside a vast underground bunker after an apocalyptic catastrophe. The silo hides secrets beneath its rigid rules, and Juliette’s search for answers uncovers a mystery that threatens to unravel a carefully constructed lie about the world beyond its walls. Season 2 ends on a massive cliffhanger, with an uprising brewing inside the silo as newly uncovered truths ignite growing unrest. Silo mirrors Chris Evans’ post-apocalyptic film Snowpiercer (2013) in its strict class divide and ambitious high-concept world-building.

Instead of an underground bunker, the scheming in Snowpiercer unfolds aboard a massive train that endlessly circles the globe, powered by a sacred perpetual-motion engine. The film imagines the aftermath of a catastrophic attempt to reverse global warming that instead plunges Earth into a devastating ice age, wiping out most life on the planet. The last surviving humans are confined to the Snowpiercer, where a brutal class system takes hold. The poorest passengers are crammed into the filthy rear cars while the elite live in comfort and excess at the front. As resentment festers, a rebellion led by Evans’ Curtis Everett breaks out. Directed by Bong Joon Ho, the film also stars Tilda Swinton, Jamie Bell, Octavia Spencer, and Ed Harris.

‘Snowpiercer’ Was a Commercial and Critical Hit

Snowpiercer was a South Korean co-production and, with a reported $40 million budget, ranks among the most expensive films ever produced in the country. The gamble paid off handsomely. The film became an international hit, shattering multiple box office records in South Korea, including the highest opening figure for a Korean film and the fastest to reach four million admissions. It ultimately grossed more than $86 million worldwide, though its U.S. box office stalled at just $4 million, due to a post-production dispute between director Joon Ho and distributor Harvey Weinstein.

Snowpiercer was also a critical success, earning a 94% rating and a consensus that praised it as “an audaciously ambitious action spectacular for filmgoers numb to effects-driven blockbusters.” More than a decade after its release, the film continues to draw audiences, ranking among the most popular titles on streaming. It’s currently available to watch for free on Pluto TV, where, at the time of writing, it sits as the fifth most popular title among U.S. viewers. The film also spawned a four-season television adaptation of the same name, which has likewise been enjoying a recent surge on the streaming charts.

You can watch Snowpiercer for free on Pluto TV, while the Snowpiercer TV series is available to stream in the US on Starz, AMC+, and on Netflix internationally.

Chappell Roan Leaves Agency Over Owner's Connection to Jeffrey Epstein

Chappell Roan has cut ties with her talent agency, Wasserman, after CEO and founder Casey Wasserman was named in files related to late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

“As of today, I am no longer represented by Wasserman, the talent agency led by Casey Wasserman,” Roan, 27, shared in an Instagram Story on Monday, February 9.

The “Pink Pony Club” singer continued, “I hold my teams to the highest standards and have a duty to protect them as well. No artist, agent or employee should ever be expected to defend or overlook actions that conflict so deeply with our own moral values.”

“I have deep respect and appreciation for the agents and staff who work tirelessly for their artists and I refuse to passively stand by,” Roan added. “Artists deserve representation that aligns with their values and supports their safety and dignity. This decision reflects my belief that meaningful change in our industry requires accountability and leadership that earns trust.”

Us Weekly has reached out to Wasserman for comment.

Last month, documents emerged linking Wasserman, 51, who is also the president of the organizing committee for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, to Epstein associate Ghislaine Maxwell.

According to The Guardian, in one email sent in 2003, Wasserman told Maxwell, “I think of you all the time. So, what do I have to do to see you in a tight leather outfit?” In another email, sent in April that same year, Maxwell offered to give Wasserman a massage that could “drive a man wild.”

“I deeply regret my correspondence with Ghislaine Maxwell which took place over two decades ago, long before her horrific crimes came to light,” Wasserman said in a statement to Deadline earlier this month. “I never had a personal or business relationship with Jeffrey Epstein. As is well documented, I went on a humanitarian trip as part of a delegation with the Clinton Foundation in 2002 on the Epstein plane. I am terribly sorry for having any association with either of them.”

Maxwell, 64, is currently serving a 20-year prison sentence after being found guilty in December 2021 on federal charges of conspiracy to entice minors to travel to engage in illegal sex acts, conspiracy to transport minors to participate in illegal sex acts, transporting a minor to participate in illegal sex acts, sex trafficking conspiracy and sex trafficking of a minor.

The Department of Justice released another tranche of federal documents — dubbed the Epstein files — in January following investigations into the disgraced financier. Epstein died by suicide in August 2019 while awaiting trial for sex trafficking of minors and conspiracy to commit sex trafficking of minors.

Dax Shepard and Kristen Bell at the 83rd Annual Golden Globe Awards

Dax Shepard is opening up about a terrifying moment from his teenage years, one that nearly cost him his life. The actor and podcast host revealed on a recent episode of “Armchair Expert” that he was involved in a serious car crash during his senior year of high school, when a late-night drive took a sudden and dangerous turn.

According to Shepard, he and a friend were driving from Toledo to Detroit in a Ford Probe. It was late, and Shepard had an early morning shift ahead of him, so he decided to stretch out and sleep in the backseat. Before nodding off, he double-checked that his friend was okay to drive. The answer was a confident yes, despite the cruise control being set to 85 miles per hour.

That confidence didn’t last long.

Shepard Woke Up To His Driver Asleep As Car Began Rolling

Shepard recalled being jolted awake by the sound of gravel hitting the side of the car. When he looked up, his friend was completely slumped over behind the wheel, fast asleep.

He tried to grab control, but it was already too late. The car veered to the side, launched into the air, and began rolling down the highway. Shepard said his mind immediately went to the worst-case scenario, the line of pine trees along the Michigan road. “I knew if we hit one of those, that was it,” he shared.

As the car continued to flip, Shepard experienced something unexpected. Instead of panic, he felt calm. After a rush of fear and realization that death felt moments away, a strange sense of peace took over. He described it as oddly comforting, saying it felt like his body just accepted what was about to happen.

The car rolled around ten times before finally coming to a stop, upside down. Against all odds, they never hit a tree. Both Shepard and his friend crawled out through the windows, shaken but alive. Somehow, neither of them was seriously hurt.

The experience stuck with Shepard long after the crash. He admitted he questioned for days afterward whether he had actually died and was still processing what had happened.

Even now, decades later, the memory hasn’t faded. Shepard says the moment was unforgettable, and it permanently changed how he travels. To this day, he refuses to fall asleep when someone else is behind the wheel.

Shepard Says Pain Led To Relapse After 16 Years Of Sobriety

That brush with death wasn’t the only moment that reshaped how Shepard views survival. Over the years, the actor has been just as open about his long struggle with addiction.

Shepard has never shied away from talking about his sobriety journey, even when it’s uncomfortable. In 2020, he revealed that after 16 years sober, he suffered a relapse, a setback he later addressed candidly on “In Fact.” According to Shepard, the relapse began when chronic pain issues with his hand and shoulder resurfaced, leading him back to prescription pain medication.

What started as legitimate treatment slowly spiraled out of control. Shepard admitted he was taking far more pills than prescribed, buying additional medication, and lying to people closest to him, all while carrying what he described as an “enormous secret.”

Roberts has been a steady presence in horror films and television since the early 2010s, when she began transitioning away from the roles that first made her a teenage superstar.

In 2011, she played Jill Roberts in “Scream 4,” bringing to life a character that would ultimately turn into one of the franchise’s most notorious villains.

She also won a lot of plaudits for her work in “The Blackcoat’s Daughter,” where she played a disturbed young woman on the run from a mental institution.

Roberts is probably best known for her recurring roles across multiple seasons of Ryan Murphy’s “American Horror Story.”
