Thousands of migrants have stormed Spanish territory with dramatic videos showing large crowds overwhelming border guards in the enclave of Ceuta in northern Africa.

Extraordinary footage shows huge numbers of migrants sprinting up beaches, swimming ashore and dispersing into the streets of the tiny Spanish territory which borders Morocco, with some shouting ‘Long live Spain‘. 

The president of the territory, Juan Jesus Vivas, has declared a ‘total humanitarian and social emergency’, with at least 60 migrants washing up dead and camps completely overwhelmed.

It comes after Spain’s socialist government approved plans to give around 500,000 undocumented migrants legal status earlier this year. 

‘In the past few days more than 1,500 migrants, both adults and minors, have come to Ceuta by sea,’ said Vivas in televised comments on Wednesday.

‘The reception centres are saturated – there is no more room for anyone in them and according to yesterday’s figures the number of people entering is more than 200 a day.’

According to EFE, hundreds of youths ​could be seen scaling the security fencing – ⁠which was not being guarded by police ​at the time – and entered Ceuta, while members ​of the Moroccan auxiliary force responsible for security on the ground withdrew as the young people passed. 

Spain’s interior ministry said in a statement that several ministries were ‘acting in coordination to respond with the utmost speed and efficiency to the situation in Ceuta’.

Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska would travel to Ceuta on Friday ‘to monitor the situation’ and meet officials, it said. 

The ministry said the government had increased its resources ‘to guarantee security and control of migration as well as the necessary humanitarian aid, so that no lives are put in danger at sea’.

It said the Moroccan government was working ‘faithfully and permanently with Spain and collaborating closely to deal with the situation’.

The ministry added: ‘Moroccan security forces are preventing the arrival of numerous people who are trying to reach Ceuta from Morocco.’

Vivas said facilities for unaccompanied minors were operating at 2,400 per cent of capacity.

In comments to Onda Cero, he described the situation as a national emergency and called for a ‘decisive, forceful, immediate and coordinated’ response under a single command structure.

Ceuta, together with Melilla – another Spanish autonomous city located in North Africa – represents the European Union’s only land border with Africa. 

Both cities periodically experience surges in attempted crossings by migrants seeking to reach Europe. 

Arrivals were currently averaging about 300 people a day, according to Vivas. 

At that pace, he warned, Ceuta could face a situation comparable to the May 2021 migration crisis, when more than 8,000 people entered the enclave in just two days.

Vivas also pointed to the human cost of the crossings, saying 60 bodies had been recovered at sea in recent months, and argued that stronger migration controls would help prevent further deaths.

The interior ministry said Moroccan security forces were helping to curb arrivals from its territory.

Vivas called for changes to Spain’s immigration framework, saying legal shortcomings exposed by a recent Supreme Court ruling needed to be addressed.

Earlier this month, the Supreme Court ruled that migrants intercepted at sea while attempting to reach Ceuta or Melilla cannot be summarily returned under the enclaves’ special border-rejection regime.

The ruling established that migrants who arrive by sea cannot be immediately pushed back across the border without due process, unlike those who cross into Spain by land – by climbing over the border fence, for example. 

Grande-Marlaska, in an interview with Spanish television channel laSexta, acknowledged authorities were facing ‘an extraordinary, exceptional situation’.

He asserted that ‘we are dealing with it with the means that we already have deployed there permanently’.

Spain’s Civil Guard, maritime Rescue Services and even the Red Cross have been using boats to pick up swimmers before taking them to Ceuta. Hundreds of migrants are now sleeping outside a migrant reception centre that is over capacity.

Those attempting the crossing are mainly Moroccans, along with a small number of Algerians who had been living in Morocco while trying to migrate to Europe, according to activists in Morocco and Ceuta.

It was not clear what prompted so many migrants to swim to Ceuta.

Some activists, including Omar Naji, president of the Moroccan Association of Human Rights in Eastern Morocco, expressed doubt that the Supreme Court ruling was behind the surge. 

Most Moroccans would have been unaware of such legal decisions, he said.

The timing of the crossing, occurring after Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez met with Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune last week, reminded Naji of the border crisis of May 2021.

At the time, Morocco was accused of easing border controls and allowing migrants to cross into the enclave after Spain allowed Polisario Front leader Brahim Ghali to receive medical treatment at a Spanish hospital, triggering a diplomatic crisis between Rabat and Madrid. 

The pro-independence Polisario Front for decades has claimed to be the legitimate representative of the indigenous Sahrawi people of disputed Western Sahara.

On Wednesday, Spain’s interior minister praised Moroccan authorities, saying they were cooperating and that the relationship with the kingdom was ‘close and based on loyalty’.

‘They are also limiting irregular departures,’ he told laSexta.

It comes as four migrants died attempting to cross the Channel overnight.

Three women and a man lost their lives in separate incidents on the French side of the Channel overnight.

The tragedies unfolded shortly after Wednesday witnessed what was thought to have been the largest number of small boat crossings this year.

Unofficial estimates reported by GB News put the total at 730, beating the 710 seen on June 15.

And a small boat overturned in the early hours of Thursday causing the death of a passenger and leading to the ‘near drowning’ of a baby.

The disaster unfolded in the early hours of Thursday morning in the sea off Neufchâtel-Hardelot, south of Boulogne.

Local mayor Paulette Juilien-Peuvion described how more than 100 people, including women and children, were attempting to board a flimsy inflatable designed for around 15 passengers.

‘One man died and six were seriously hurt,’ she said during a visit to the scene later in the day.

Meanwhile, three women were found dead near the port of Dunkirk, French authorities said on Thursday. They are understood to have been on a separate boat to the man who died. 

The women were brought to shore as French emergency services rushed to the scene; however, attempts to resuscitate them failed and all three were declared dead.

They were reportedly aged around 20, 30 and 50.

Significant damage was caused to the home

An investigation is ongoing to find out if a house fire this morning was started deliberately.

Emergency services were called to the Mullavilly Heights area of Tandragee in the early hours of Thursday, July 30, following reports of a fire.

No one was in the home at the time but significant damage was caused. Police are now investigating to establish the full circumstances surrounding what happened, including whether ignition was deliberate.

A PSNI spokesperson said: “Police in Armagh are appealing for information and witnesses following a house fire in Tandragee.

“A report was received shortly after 3.20am this morning, Thursday 30th July, of a house on fire in the Mullavilly Heights area of the town.

“Officers attended the scene, along with colleagues from the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service (NIFRS), who extinguished the blaze.

“Thankfully, there was nobody present in the property and therefore no injuries reported. Significant damage was caused to the property, however.

“Enquiries are ongoing at this time to establish the full circumstances surrounding what happened, including whether ignition was deliberate.

A ten-year-old visiting California with his family briefly lost consciousness and went limp amid ferocious waves – before a teenage lifeguard dramatically rescued him.

Nathaniel Rai, of Dallas, Texas, had waded into the ocean while on vacation with his mother and sister at Seabright Beach in Santa Cruz on Saturday.

After a sneaker wave swelled much farther up the beach than expected, the young boy began to get swept out to sea, Scott Vander Dussen told the Los Angeles Times. 

‘From what I gathered, he assumed he was going to die,’ his father, Sumit Rai, told ABC 7.

‘He was drowning. He knew he was drowning. He blacked out. He went unconscious. When he came out of the water, he was clearly limp. It doesn’t look like he was breathing.’

But thanks to the quick-thinking actions of lifeguard Ryder Williams, Rai survived. 

The 16-year-old was caught on camera jumping into action immediately after seeing the boy’s head bobbing in the waves.

Williams could be seen in the footage with his arms wrapped around the boy as waves surged all around them.

When the monstrous waves then crashed down, the teenager was seen ducking underneath the water – refusing to let go of Rai.

As they approached the shore, fellow lifeguard Aaron Bohnen could be seen helping drag Williams and Rai up the beach. 

Rai appeared to be limp as he was brought closer to shore, before a third lifeguard lifted him up.

When they carried the boy to safety, those on the beach applauded. 

Reflecting on the rescue, Williams said he was ‘at the waterline 15 yards down-coast of Tower 2, when I looked up and saw a child about 20 [yards] up from the tower lose his footing in ankle-deep water.’

At that point, he ran into the ocean to try to reach the child.

‘After the first wave, I was unable to pull him out because he was limp and the waves were pushing so hard,’ Williams told ABC 7 on Wednesday.

‘There were two to three more waves before lifeguard Aaron Bohnen entered the water to help me. There were bystanders who jumped in to try to help and I yelled at them all to get back to shore.’

Once the boy was safely back on the beach, Williams said he and Bohnen assessed the child, after which he resumed his regular lifeguard duties.

‘I’m grateful to have had the opportunity to return the child to his family safely,’ Williams said. ‘This is my job and I love what I do.’

He then added that he is ‘thankful for my fellow lifeguards who perform rescues just like this every day.’

But many who saw the video credited Williams with saving Rai’s life, with Vander Dussen claiming he had been just ‘moments from not coming back.’

‘A few seconds, a few degrees, a few yards of distance and this is a very different story with a very different ending,’ Vander Dussen said as he shared the video.

It quickly circulated on social media – even garnering the attention of President Donald Trump, who invited the teenager to the White House to receive a civilian honor.

‘We’re going to bring this heroic young man and his family into the White House, with perhaps, the boy he saved to give him a High Civilian Honor,’ the commander-in-chief posted on X, adding that the teen was ‘very brave.’

Other lifeguards also said Williams handled the situation like a professional.

He intentionally dipped himself and the boy below the surf rather than battle the waves above, thereby minimizing exposure to the powerful currents that threatened to sweep them both deeper out to sea, Tom Gill, president of the United States Lifesaving Association, told the San Francisco Chronicle.

‘The first thing I see when I look at that video is an incredibly brave young man putting his life on the line to save someone else,’ Gill said.

‘That is so much water moving, so much power. The wherewithal, the poise, the training, the confidence to stay with that rescue – that had to take everything that young man had.’

Gill also said Williams ‘probably would have loved’ to just wrap his flotation device around the boy.

Instead, his calm, steadfast effort kept the boy’s airways above the water as he methodically worked his way back to shore.

Wyatt Werneth, a spokesman for the American Lifeguard Association, added that the video shows Williams’ grit and determination.

‘He was above and beyond the standard,’ Werneth insisted. ‘Out of 100 16-year-olds that we hire a year, I might have one that was up to the measure of this young man.’

Williams suffered ‘some road rash on his forehead’ after saving Rai, when he hit his head on the sand but was otherwise left unscathed, his father, Shane Williams, told the California Post. 

The emotional toll of the rescue was also apparent when the teenager returned home from his shift that day.

‘He told me when he got home, he said, “Dad, I wasn’t going to let go of that kid because I knew if I let go of him, he was going to drown and I wasn’t going to let that happen,”‘ Shane recounted. 

‘And it brought a tear to my eye when he said that. It was pretty amazing.’

Yet the teenager has apparently remained humble, telling his family only that ‘It was all in a day’s work’ and ‘This is what I do.’

He then wound up rescuing two others following the now viral moment with Rai in situations his grandfather, George Williams, said were ‘more gnarly.’

In total, the teenage lifeguard undertook five different rescues during his Saturday shift.

Shane said his son’s actions that day reflect the kind of caring person he has always been.

‘He just wants to give back to his community because he grew up there,’ the proud father said. 

But Rai’s father said his family is just fortunate, ‘because of Ryder and those people that helped, that he actually survived this.’

‘God bless them and you know, thank you, I cannot express sufficient gratitude,’ Sumit said. 

‘There’s nothing more valuable to me than my children. And to save one of them and their lives, especially at such a young, tender age, you know, which is such a premature way to lose someone, I can’t thank them enough.’

‘I’m just so grateful that Ryder and others were there to help pull him out and save his life,’ the father continued. ‘Otherwise, I can’t imagine what life would look like today.’ 

First Minister John Swinney said Ross’s family would be supported by the Scottish government and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

He said: “This is an absolutely appalling case that has been reported overnight.

“And obviously I’m deeply concerned that such a tragedy has taken place.”

Helena Smith, The Guardian’s correspondent in Athens, told BBC Radio Scotland that the body was found in a derelict building in downtown Athens, “in an area that is booming, full of Airbnbs”.

She said: “It is very popular with people travelling through Athens and young foreigners who have elected to make the Greek capital their home.”

Smith said that Ross had family in Edinburgh and “connections” to Greece – staying with a friend in Athens before she disappeared.

She added: “It would seem that someone had control over her mobile phone after she died and was sending messages to distract the authorities and close friends from trying to track her down.”

An expert from a butchers company has shared the common mistake people make when cooking bacon and steak – and it’s all to do with your pan.

When you’re doing the weekly shop and need something quick for breakfast or dinner, few things beat a pack of bacon or a couple of steaks. Both are delicious and full of flavour, and can be enjoyed on their own or added into sandwiches, noodles or pasta dishes.

They’re also both relatively simple to prepare, requiring little more than a few minutes of frying in a pan. Despite this, there’s one critical error that many people are making with their meat — and according to an expert, it’s destroying both the flavour and texture.

An expert at specialist butcher Campbells Meat, Niall McCusker, has shared the widespread mistake that most of us have been guilty of making in the kitchen.

He said: “The way you cook your meat will ultimately affect the taste and the texture.”

In many recipes, the first step is to heat your pan before adding anything to it. While certain lean meats such as chicken, pork chops and lean steaks can benefit from this approach, other cuts — such as bacon and fatty steak — require an entirely different technique.

How to cook bacon and steak properly

Rather than reaching for a red-hot pan, Niall recommends placing your steak, bacon or other high-fat meats into a cold pan first.

“These foods have a high fat content, so you need to know how to render the fat and get it nice and crispy without burning the meat,” Niall explained. “Starting off with a cold pan lets the fat slowly melt as it turns into a liquid. That cooks off the fat and gives you that flavour without burning the meat. It also results in a more tender texture, as it hasn’t tightened up from cooking on a high heat.”

Can you cook bacon and steak in the air fryer?

For those who favour an air fryer over a traditional pan, you can still achieve perfectly juicy yet crispy bacon and steaks — and it couldn’t be easier.

For bacon, arrange the strips in a single layer inside the basket, ensuring they don’t overlap at all, as this will affect how crispy they become. Set the temperature to 200C and cook for approximately eight to 10 minutes, before removing and placing on a sheet of kitchen paper to absorb any excess grease.

Steaks require a little more preparation. Pat them dry using kitchen paper, brush with a teaspoon of olive oil and season with salt and pepper.

Pre-heat the air fryer for two minutes at 200C, then place the steaks in the basket and cook for six minutes. Turn the steak and cook for a further two minutes.

At this stage, your steak should be rare to medium rare. Add another two minutes for medium steaks, plus a further two minutes if you prefer them well-done.

Allow them to rest on a plate for a couple of minutes, and they’ll be ready to serve.
