Inside Atlanta’s FIFA World Cup 2026: matches, fans and matchday magic | FIFA World Cup 2022

Published

on

The FIFA World Cup 2026 is not just about the matches, it’s about the journey, the atmosphere and the memories created along the way. And few host cities promise a more complete fan experience than Atlanta. Whether you’re lucky enough to have a match ticket or simply soaking in the action from fan zones across the city, Atlanta offers plenty to make your World Cup trip unforgettable.

Several nations, including Spain, Cape Verde, South Africa, Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Haiti and Uzbekistan, are scheduled to feature at the state-of-the-art stadium during the group phase. The venue is expected to be one of the tournament’s standout destinations as the World Cup unfolds across the United States, Canada and Mexico.

A stadium surrounded by massive development

Situated close to Centennial Olympic Park, which commemorates Atlanta’s role as host of the 1996 Olympic Games, the stadium is also at the center of a major urban redevelopment project.

The area surrounding the venue is undergoing a transformation through the multi-billion-dollar Centennial Yards initiative. The project will introduce new hotels, entertainment spaces, restaurants, retail outlets and immersive attractions, creating a vibrant district around the World Cup venue.

Why it’s known as Atlanta Stadium during the World Cup?

Outside FIFA competitions, the venue is widely known as Mercedes-Benz Stadium and is commonly referred to by locals as “The Benz.”

However, FIFA regulations prohibit the use of commercial stadium names during its tournaments, meaning the venue will officially operate as Atlanta Stadium throughout the World Cup.

Interestingly, the giant Mercedes-Benz logo on the roof will remain visible. Stadium officials determined that covering the branding could damage parts of the retractable roof structure, resulting in a rare exception to FIFA’s standard sponsorship rules.

Home of Atlanta’s biggest sports teams

Opened in 2018 at a reported construction cost of approximately $1.6 billion, the stadium replaced the former Georgia Dome.

Today, it serves as the home venue for:

  • NFL franchise Atlanta Falcons

  • Major League Soccer side Atlanta United

The venue has quickly become one of the most recognizable sports stadiums in North America.

Capacity and World Cup Crowds

Atlanta Stadium can accommodate nearly 80,000 spectators for major events.

Local organizers expect every World Cup fixture at the venue to attract near-capacity crowds, continuing a tradition of large attendances that the stadium has regularly witnessed since opening.

Atlanta United has repeatedly drawn some of the largest crowds in MLS history, while college football games have also packed the venue.

Natural Grass replaces artificial turf

The stadium normally uses a state-of-the-art synthetic playing surface.

For the World Cup, however, FIFA regulations require natural grass. Stadium operators have spent the last two years testing and refining systems designed to grow and maintain high-quality grass inside the enclosed venue.

Previous temporary grass installations received criticism during earlier international tournaments, but extensive testing ahead of the World Cup aims to ensure improved playing conditions.

A climate-controlled World Cup experience

Atlanta summers can be extremely hot, with temperatures regularly climbing above 30°C.

Fortunately for supporters, the stadium’s roof will remain closed throughout the tournament. Combined with full air-conditioning, fans can expect a far more comfortable matchday experience compared to several outdoor venues across North America.

Are there official World Cup fan zones in Atlanta?

Yes. Atlanta will host an official FIFA World Cup Fan Festival at Centennial Olympic Park during the 2026 World Cup.

The fan zone is expected to operate on approximately 20 tournament days, including matchdays and the day before each World Cup fixture hosted in the city. Located in the heart of downtown Atlanta, the venue is easily accessible on foot and via the city’s MARTA public transport network from both Mercedes-Benz Stadium and nearby hotels.

For supporters without match tickets, the Fan Festival will offer an opportunity to experience the World Cup atmosphere through live screenings, entertainment, activities, and fan-focused events throughout the tournament.

Best Places to watch World Cup matches in Atlanta

Fans without stadium tickets can still soak up the World Cup atmosphere at several viewing locations across the city. The official FIFA Fan Festival at Centennial Olympic Park will feature giant screens showing live matches throughout the tournament. While registration is free, guaranteed entry may require a paid pass depending on demand.

Other popular viewing spots include Decatur Square, which will host outdoor watch parties, and District Atlanta near Atlanta Stadium, where matches will be screened indoors on large LED displays. Additional fan events and screenings are also expected to pop up along the Atlanta BeltLine.

Alternative Spot to Watch the World Cup Final in Atlanta

For fans unable to secure a seat at the FIFA World Cup final in New Jersey on July 19, Atlanta will still offer a lively matchday experience. Popular Italian restaurant Yeppa & Co. is planning a special World Cup Final watch party outside its Buckhead venue, transforming the surrounding street into a football-themed fan zone.

The event is expected to feature giant screens for live coverage of the final, along with music and entertainment, creating a festival-like atmosphere for supporters looking to enjoy the biggest game in football without being inside the stadium.

Top sports bars for football fans

Atlanta boasts plenty of sports bars preparing for the World Cup. STATS Brewpub remains one of the city’s most well-known sports venues, offering dozens of screens for live coverage.

Other popular options expected to attract football supporters include Fado Irish Pub, Brewhouse Cafe, Der Biergarten, Hudson Grille and SweetWater Brewing. Midtown, in particular, is likely to become a hotspot for fans looking to catch matches in a lively atmosphere.

Best pre-match hangouts

For supporters meeting friends before kickoff, the Atlanta BeltLine and Ponce City Market offer plenty of cafés, breweries and restaurants with rooftop seating and city views.

Fans heading toward Atlanta Stadium should consider arriving early, as bars and restaurants around downtown are expected to fill up well before match time on game days.

Atlanta Stadium has earned a reputation for offering affordable concessions without compromising on quality. Fans can enjoy a substantial meal at a reasonable price, making it one of the more budget-friendly stadium experiences in major sports.

Beyond the standard concession stands, visitors can also choose from a range of popular Atlanta food outlets, including J.R. Crickets, Williamson Bros. BBQ, WNB Factory, and Farm Burger, giving fans plenty of local flavours to sample during matchdays.

The stadium is equally impressive when it comes to beverages, with bars and drink stations spread throughout the venue. Numerous screens positioned across the concourses allow supporters to keep up with the action even while grabbing food or refreshments, while seating areas provide convenient spots to relax without missing key moments.

Attractions worth booking early

Visitor numbers are expected to rise significantly during the World Cup, especially on days when no matches are scheduled (July 8, 12, 13, 16, and 17) in Atlanta.

Popular attractions such as the World of Coca-Cola and the Georgia Aquarium are likely to experience heavy demand, making advance bookings highly recommended. Reservations for sought-after restaurants and rooftop venues are also advised during the tournament period.

Getting around Atlanta during the World Cup

MARTA remains the most convenient public transport option for fans travelling to Atlanta Stadium and the downtown district during the World Cup.

The rail network operates frequently throughout the day, with trains running at roughly five-minute intervals between early morning and late night. Visitors can also take advantage of complimentary parking available at several MARTA stations across the Atlanta metropolitan area.

Multiple stations are located within walking distance of Atlanta Stadium, making it an efficient way to avoid matchday traffic. A one-way journey on MARTA costs $2.50 per passenger.

How much do World Cup tickets cost in Atlanta?

Ticket prices for FIFA World Cup matches in Atlanta vary based on several factors, including the teams involved, seating category, and the specific matchday. Entry-level tickets are expected to start at around $200, with prices increasing for premium seating and high-demand fixtures to as high as $3,000.  Are Atlanta based supporters going to watch the WC?

With the FIFA World Cup returning to the United States for the first time since 1994, excitement is expected to be at an all-time high. However, not every fan is embracing the tournament with the same enthusiasm.

One Atlanta-based supporter expressed disappointment over the rising cost of attending matches, arguing that the World Cup has become increasingly inaccessible for ordinary families. The fan compared the upcoming edition with the 1994 tournament, recalling how it inspired him as a teenager and helped grow football’s popularity in the country.

According to the supporter, soaring ticket prices have created a disconnect between the event and local communities, with many fans feeling priced out of experiencing the tournament in person. He also claimed that interest among locals remains muted, with ticket costs becoming one of the dominant talking points surrounding the World Cup.

What the Fan Said

“I’m much less excited than in 1994, when the World Cup was held in the US. It feels like an event for the rich now. It would cost $2,000 for me to go to a group stage match with my wife and two kids. None of those games is worth that, and the knockout stages will cost significantly more. If I’m just watching on TV, it might as well be on the other side of the world, which is a shame because 1994 had an amazing impact on me as a 14-year-old. I wish my kids and the city could experience that excitement.” Kyle from Atlanta said while talking to The Guardian.

“Most people in Atlanta are apathetic about the World Cup. People who care are disenchanted by ticket prices; those who don’t are not even talking about it. The news cycle does not offer any oxygen for it, except to remind everyone about the price gouging. I hope FIFA loses its shirt on it and people do not travel to the US or pay the exorbitant ticket prices. I also hope the expanded format backfires and people don’t tune in to the first round. Once the last 16 begins, the rest of the world will eagerly watch the competitive part of the tournament. I imagine the US will get out of their group and lose against the first decent opposition they meet.” he added.  How much Indian fans would have to spend to watch the WC?

For Indian supporters dreaming of watching the FIFA World Cup 2026 live, the trip is likely to come with a hefty price tag. With matches spread across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, many fans are turning to sports travel companies that offer all-inclusive packages covering match access, accommodation, flights, and local transportation.

Premium hospitality experiences are driving much of the demand, particularly among high-net-worth individuals and corporate clients. Hospitality tickets alone can range from around $2,500 to $10,000, while packages for marquee fixtures such as the final can exceed $60,000. When combined with travel and stay, a six-day World Cup trip for a group-stage match can cost Indian travellers anywhere between ₹7 lakh and ₹9 lakh per person.

The overall cost of attendance is being further impacted by rising airfares and accommodation prices. Flights to North America have already seen significant increases, while hotel rates are expected to surge as the tournament approaches. Despite the high costs, interest remains strong, with many fans willing to follow their teams across multiple cities and even countries during the month-long spectacle.  A challenging task for spectators this year  Unlike the compact setup of Qatar 2022, where fans could travel between the two furthest venues in under 100 kilometres, the 2026 World Cup presents a far greater logistical challenge. With matches spread across three countries, supporters may have to cover distances of up to 4,500 kilometres between host cities. Coupled with visa requirements, ongoing geopolitical tensions in parts of the world, and rising travel and accommodation costs, attending the tournament is expected to be significantly more complex and expensive than previous editions.

MANILA, Philippines — Alex Eala ousted defending champion Leylah Fernandez with an impressive 6-2, 7-6 (1) victory to secure a spot in the quarterfinals of the Mubadala DC Open in Washington, D.C.

Showcasing grit once again, Eala rallied from a 5-1 deficit in the second set before overwhelming Fernandez in the tiebreak to level their head-to-head series at one win apiece.

“I think I definitely had some tough moments in that match, and credit to Leylah, she put me in some really tough positions,” Eala, who previously lost to Fernandez in the Stuttgart Open in April, said. “So, I think I’m super proud of how I fought and how I stayed in there.”

On the verge of playing another three-setter, Eala responded by winning five straight games to take a 6-5 lead, but Fernandez held serve to force a tiebreak.

The Filipino tennis star wasted no time in the tiebreak, building a 3-0 advantage before Fernandez got on the board. Eala then won four straight points to close out the match in one hour and 53 minutes.

Eala will face the winner between Polina Kudermetova and Elina Svitolina in the quarterfinals.

The world No. 28 came out firing in the first set with a 3-0 lead, opening the match with a love hold to set the tone. She traded holds with Fernandez before sealing the set with her second break.

But Eala admittedly struggled in the second after Fernandez, currently ranked No. 34 with a career-high No. 13, found her rhythm and reeled off five straight games to move within a game of forcing a decider.

That was when Eala regained her composure—reminiscent of her Round of 32 win over Zheng Qinwen, when she rallied from a set down—and retook control of the match.

“I know that she was playing a little better, and maybe my level dropped a little bit. I think those are very tricky moments when you know your level has dropped, and you want to do better, but things just, for one reason or another, aren’t coming out,” Eala, who beat Zheng 4-6, 6-4, 6-1, said.

The Vikings’ Emergency QB Plan Slips Away

Published

Back in rookie minicamp, the Vikings welcomed a veteran passer to town in an effort to keep the pigskin spinnin’. Cooper Rush has been a pro for a long time, leading to some attention about him going out for a cluster of practices meant for the NFL’s newest employees.

Kevin O’Connell demonstrated some good self awareness on the matter. In fact, he made jokes about hoping that Rush didn’t hang up the phone due to being asked about coming to the Twin Cities for an unusual arrangement.

Part of O’Connell’s hope was to build a communication avenue should there be a need for an emergency passer. Pursuing that initial plan may now need to occur at the front office level since Rush is no longer unemployed.

Look at what ESPN’s Adam Schefter said in the update: “With Atlanta QB Tua Tagovailoa dealing with a tight back and Michael Penix still not practicing due to a knee injury, the Falcons are signing veteran quarterback Cooper Rush, per sources.”

The Vikings’ Emergency QB Plan

The Falcons are being led by Kevin Stefanski. If that name sounds familiar, then that’s for good reason. Coach Stefanski got his start in the NFL with the Vikings, rising up to being the offensive coordinator before getting stolen away to be the head coach of the Browns.

Stefanski is now in Atlanta to work alongside a pair of southpaw passers. Most notably, there’s Michael Penix Jr.. He’s the quarterback who got chosen at No. 8 in the same draft where J.J. McCarthy went at No. 10. Part of what made that decision wild (other than the move being a huge reach) was that Kirk Cousins had just been signed to a monstrous contract. Atlanta created a mess and is still digesting the consequences.

Otherwise, there’s Tua Tavogailoa in town to battle for the starting spot.

Upon first glance, employing these two quarterbacks would appear to leave little room for a third passer. The issue is that both are working through injury, albeit of a different severity.

Marc Raimondi (ESPN) with an update on Penix: “Penix said it might be another four weeks to get cleared or maybe earlier, depending on how his body feels during camp.” Meanwhile, Tagovailoa is inching closer. Schefter sent a quick word on the matter: “Falcons HC Kevin Stefanski said QB Tua Tagovailoa ‘will be out there sooner rather than later.’”

So, the pivot is toward Cooper Rush. He’ll quickly learn his assignment while allowing for Atlanta to function in training camp practices.

Minnesota’s passer depth chart is pretty stuffed. Check out how most view things:

  • QB1 Kyler Murray
  • QB2 J.J. McCarthy
  • QB3 Carson Wentz
  • QB4 Max Brosmer

Of those options, Max Brosmer is the most insecure in his roster spot. What’s somewhat ironic is that the firmest assignment belongs to Carson Wentz. He’s close to assured of being the emergency quarterback. Where there’s room for some debate is who secures the top spot.

What threatens things is the ever-present danger of injury. The 2023 season was undermined largely by shuffling through four quarterbacks. Something similar could be said of the 2025 season due to the three different quarterbacks who were needed last year. Minnesota’s approach has been to hope for the best while planning for the worst.

In Cooper Rush, the Vikings felt as though they had a break-glass-in-case-of-emergency option sitting in free agency. Leaving him there, in free agency, meant allowing for some risk of losing him. Minnesota will need to look elsewhere for a veteran shepherd for their complex scheme if injury runs amok on the QB room yet again.

Cooper Rush, 32, has played in 42 NFL games dating back to 2017.

King Alexander & Daniel King win Tote Galway Plate

Published

on

King Alexander (20/1) won the Tote Galway Plate at Ballybrit on Wednesday afternoon,

Trained by Willie Mullins, the Daniel King-ridden eight-year-old gave the Closutton trainer his third victory in the Grade 3 feature.

In a race where big-priced horses filled the first three spots, Paul Nolan’s Conyers Hill (25/1), the mount of Aldan O’Sullivan, was second, with Gorgeous Tom (25/1), from the Waterford stable of Henry de Bromhead, third at 25/1.

There was only a half-length and three-quarters-of-a-length respectively between the first three finishers in the €270,000 Wednesday feature.

Willie Mullins treble

The win completed a treble for Mullins this evening, having earlier won the maiden hurdle and the mares’ handicap hurdle.

The champion trainer began the day with the victory of Mr Hollywood (2/1 favourite) in the opening Tote Guaranteed 50k Placepot Maiden Hurdle.

The gelded bay son of Iquitos, last seen when finishing third in the Queen Alexandra at Royal Ascot last month, came late on the stands’ side under Brian Hayes as the six-year-old beat Emmet Mullins’ Jeroboam Machin (10/1) and Donagh Meyler by half-a-length. Another Willie Mullins-prepared runner, Al Arrivee (3/1), the mount of Patrick Mullins, was two-and-a-half lengths further back to complete a Mullins family trifecta.

Mullins had brought up a double on the evening when the impressive French-bred Venusienne took the Tote Guarantee, Never Beaten by SP Irish EBF Mares Handicap Hurdle for rider Harry Cobden. The daughter of Capital Stud’s Authorized had a two-and-a-half length advantage over the Joseph O’Brien-trained Fratas (2/1f) at the winning line, with Emesteraye (16/1) third.

Berkshire is Mighty in Handicap Hurdle

Mighty Berkshire (15/2) was a popular victor in the Tote.ie Money-Back 2nd Every Race Handicap Hurdle for owner/jockey Declan Queally. The Waterford handler’s runner was only contesting his second handicap, and the addition of new headgear seemed to help the six-year-old bay gelding. Owned by the Man About Dog Syndicate, comprising members from counties in Munster, Mighty Berkshire won by a length-and-a-quarter from Noel Meade’s Golden Temple (5/1), with Macshadow Des Crai third at 14/1 under Jack Kennedy.

Birthday winner for Dermot Weld

Abbotsford (7/4 favourite), owned and bred by Juddmonte Farms, gave Dermot Weld a birthday present when winning the Visit Tote26 On Course (Q.R.) Maiden over one mile four furlongs and 43 yards.

The three-year-old son of Frankel, who was gelded since finishing runner-up at Cork last May, was an easy seven-and-a-half length winner for amateur jockey Finny Maguire, son of former top National Hunt rider, Adrian.

Joey Sheridan and Minella Rockett (10/1) came late in the Tote Every Day Is A Money-Back Day Handicap to get a neck advantage over Johnny Soda (11/2) at the line, to deny Ado McGuinness another winner at Galway this week. Krasimir (15/2) was a head back in a tight finish to the 1 mile 123 yards race.

The final race of Galway Plate Day, the Bet With Tote.ie On Racing & Sports Handicap went the way of Cock And Bull (7/2jf) for Sam Coen and Emmet Mullins.

Duleep Trophy 2026: Vaibhav Sooryavanshi named East Zone vice-captain led by Ishan Kishan

Published

on

India’s teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has added another milestone to his rapidly rising career after being appointed vice-captain of the East Zone squad for the Duleep Trophy 2026. Fresh from winning the Player of the Series award during India’s tour of Zimbabwe, Sooryavanshi will serve as deputy to Ishan Kishan, who has been named captain of the East Zone side for the prestigious red-ball tournament beginning on August 23 in Bengaluru.

The vice-captaincy marks another major achievement for the youngster, who made his international debut during India’s tour of England earlier this month. Following a string of impressive performances for India and in domestic cricket, Sooryavanshi has now been entrusted with a leadership role in one of India’s premier domestic tournaments.

He is expected to open the batting alongside experienced Bengal opener Abhimanyu Easwaran, who returns as the most seasoned player in the squad with more than 100 first-class appearances.

Ishan Kishan to lead experienced East Zone squad

Wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan will captain an East Zone side that blends experienced international cricketers with emerging talent. Veteran India pacer Mohammed Shami returns to the domestic circuit after missing international action since the 2025 Champions Trophy final. The 35-year-old featured for Bengal in the 2025-26 domestic season and also played 13 matches for the Lucknow Super Giants in IPL 2026.

The squad also includes India fast bowler Mukesh Kumar, all-rounder Shahbaz Ahmed, Jharkhand batter Virat Singh, wicketkeeper Kumar Kushagra, and spin all-rounder Anukul Roy, who impressed during India A’s successful tri-series campaign in Sri Lanka earlier this year.

Riyan Parag, Akash Deep miss out

East Zone will be without two prominent names, Riyan Parag and Akash Deep, both of whom continue their rehabilitation after undergoing surgeries. Parag is recovering from right shoulder surgery, while Akash Deep remains sidelined following back surgery. Neither player was considered for selection as they continue their recovery programmes.

Former NBA champion has Magic, other teams finishing ahead of Sixers

Published

on

The Philadelphia 76ers figure to be at or near the top of the Eastern Conference after a busy offseason that brought in Jaylen Brown, LeBron James, and a slew of others to join Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, and VJ Edgecombe on a talented roster. The Sixers now have one of the best rosters in the league and should be contending for a title in the upcoming season.

That doesn’t mean it will be a walk in the park. The East is tough with a number of teams that have the talent to reach the finals. The New York Knicks are the defending champs. The Detroit Pistons won 60 games. The Indiana Pacers are getting Tyrese Haliburton back from injury. The Miami Heat have Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo. The Toronto Raptors acquired Kawhi Leonard and so on, and so on.

With that being said, the Sixers should still be at the top of the East. However, when asking former champion Jason Williams, he isn’t buying the Sixers:

The Knicks are going to be better. Miami is going to be better. Orlando Magic will finish higher than the Sixers…Atlanta will finish higher.

Sir Clive Lloyd pays tribute to ‘greatest all-round cricketer’ Sir Garfield Sobers at funeral

Published

on

Sir Garfield Sobers was called the “greatest all-round cricketer the world has ever known” by former team-mate Sir Clive Lloyd at the legendary West Indies player’s state funeral in Barbados.

Lloyd described all-rounder Sobers, who died aged 89 on 17 July, as “a man who lived in the hearts and minds of Caribbean people and who became a source of inspiration to millions throughout the world”.

An entertaining left-handed batter and bowler of seam and spin, Sobers played 93 Tests between 1954 and 1974, scoring 8,032 runs and taking 235 wickets.

The funeral was staged at the Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, the principle ground in Barbados and home to a pavilion named after Sobers.

Lloyd and fellow West Indies legends Brian Lara and Desmond Haynes were among those who spoke at the state service of thanksgiving, which was also attended by Barbados president Jeffrey Bostic, prime minister Mia Mottley and Barbadian music superstar Rihanna.

West Indies Test captain Roston Chase, who comes from Barbados, vice-captain Jomel Warrican and the current side’s Barbadian players were also in attendance, having completed a Test victory over Pakistan on Monday, winning by 90 runs inside four days in Trinidad.

“Sir Garfield Sobers was not merely the outstanding cricketer of his generation,” Lloyd added. “He brought to the beautiful game a rare combination of brilliance, imagination, courage and joy.”

Sobers’ coffin was draped in the flag of Barbados and set off from the Parliament Buildings in Bridgetown on a gun carriage for a formal procession through the nation’s capital.

On arrival at the stadium, the carriage passed through a guard of honour of raised cricket bats.

“This is not a sad moment,” Lara said of his mentor. “This is a moment for us to celebrate and I hope you feel the same. Today we celebrate the remarkable life of the greatest all-round cricketer.

“We celebrate a man who gave so much to his family, to Barbados, to the West Indies and all of us who had the privilege of knowing him.”

Sobers scored 365 not out against Pakistan in 1958 – an effort which stood as the record Test score for 36 years.

He was also named one of Wisden’s five cricketers of the 20th century.

During his stint at Nottinghamshire in 1968, Sobers became the first player to hit a six off all six balls in an over in a first-class match.

Mottley described Sobers as “a man who if he had not achieved any of those great feats on the cricket field would have been immortalised by his community as a good man and a great man”.

Reverend Canon Guy Hewitt read out a message from King Charles during the service.

“History is distinguished with sporting champions whose records have rightly commanded respect across generations,” the message read. “There have been far fewer however whose name along brings a smile to people’s faces across Barbados, the Caribbean and the Commonwealth.

“Sir Garfield Sobers belongs very firmly in the latter category. I send my deepest sympathies to Sir Garry’s family as they come to terms with this great loss.”

Sobers’ body lay in state at the Barbados parliament on Monday and at the Kensington Oval on Tuesday, with national dignitaries and members of the public able to pay their respects.

He will be laid to rest at Coral Ridge Memorial Gardens in the south of Barbados.
