DP World breaks ground on critical Fremantle rail project in Western Australia

DP World has broken ground on its new US$18 million Fremantle Rail Interchange project, a critical infrastructure project designed to strengthen Western Australia’s freight network, improve supply chain efficiency, and support the state’s long-term economic growth.

Rita Saffioti, Deputy Premier and Transport Minister of Western Australia, was part of the ceremony.

DP World starts Fremantle rail project

The project will deliver a new dedicated rail gate connection, which will link DP World’s Fremantle container operations directly with the North Quay Rail Terminal. This is expected to streamline container transfers within the port precinct and reduce truck movements on internal roads by more than 20,000 trips per annum.

The interchange project will see 33 per cent of the total freight volume shifted by rail, up from 22 per cent now. It will deliver measurable gains in productivity and sustainability, reducing emissions, easing congestion, and improving cost efficiency for Western Australian exporters and importers.

Fremantle rail project creates jobs

The Fremantle Rail Interchange will create over 50 direct and indirect local jobs during its construction and operation, while further enhancing Fremantle’s competitiveness and trade efficiency.

Minister Saffioti said the project highlighted the strong collaboration between the State Government and the private sector, and added: “This investment supports the State Government’s vision for a more efficient and sustainable freight network across Western Australia to strengthen our economy and deliver quality local jobs.

“By shifting more freight from road to rail out of Fremantle Port, this investment will reduce congestion, improve road safety, cut emissions, and strengthen Fremantle’s position as a vital gateway for trade and jobs in our State.

“This project will also play an important role in helping to reduce congestion on our roads during the upcoming closure of the Fremantle Traffic Bridge by reducing heavy truck movements in and around the port precinct.”

DP World enhances supply chain network

The Fremantle development is part of DP World’s nearly US$1 billion commitment to upgrade Australia’s port infrastructure by 2028, supported by a series of national projects that enhance rail connectivity, lift operational efficiency and strengthen supply chain resilience.
