Ex-Canadian PM watches World Cup opener in US, not Canada

On Friday night, Trudeau was in Inglewood, Calif., where he watched the United States defeat Paraguay 4-1. Earlier in the day, Canada played Bosnia and Herzegovina to a 1-1 draw in Toronto.
So why did he make that choice?
Clearly as a show of support for his girlfriend, singer Katy Perry, who was part of the pre-match opening ceremony in Inglewood. After the performance, the two watched the match from a box, holding hands.
Trudeau, 54, and Perry, 41, went on their first date last July and were a couple by fall. Around the first of the year, Perry made the relationship official on social media.
Last week, Trudeau and Perry walked their first red carpet together at the Tribeca Festival for the debut of her film, “Katy Perry: The Lifetimes Tour – Live from Paris.”
It was at the festival that Perry took part in an onstage conversation with People and let her feelings for Trudeau be known, calling him “the love of my life.”
“I feel like a more grounded person in so many aspects of my life,” she said. “I am very in love.”
Trudeau’s lack of attendance in Toronto unsettled some Canadians on social media, who said that since he was prime minister when Canada was named a co-host of the North American World Cup, he should have been on hand.

World Cup 2026: USMNT draws its most-watched telecast ever during win over Paraguay, averaging close to 16 million viewers
The United State men’s national team inspired confidence on Friday night that it can make a run in the 2026 World Cup. At SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, the Americans turned in a showing that belonged in Hollywood. They started and finished on the aggressive, dominating possession throughout a 4-1 victory over Paraguay in their first match of group play.
The USMNT’s four goals were the most it’s scored in a World Cup match, period. And, according to Fox Sports PR, the 15,986,000 viewers, on average, the USMNT drew on Fox, Fox One and Tubi were a record, too.

In fact, that made up the most-watched USMNT telecast ever. It doubled as the most-watched men’s World Cup group stage telecast in English-language U.S. history, according to Fox.
The showdown between Group D teams peaked with 18,860,000 viewers from 10:45-11 p.m. ET, per Fox. The average viewership was up 106% from the USMNT’s 2022 World Cup opener in Qatar, where it pulled in an average of 7,763,000 viewers amid a 1-1 tie with Wales on Nov. 21 of that year.
In its ratings report, Fox cited Nielsen preliminary fast-nationals, Adobe Analytics and data from the Fox-owned streaming service Tubi. It’s worth noting that Nielsen shifted to a new methodology last fall that couples its traditional panel with “Big Data” from smart TVs and set-top boxes. That’s notable when considering the surging figures, as is the fact that, per Sports Media Watch, the 2026 World Cup is just the second since Nielsen started including out-of-home viewing in its estimates.

Right from the jump, this year’s World Cup has indicated that a multitude of viewership records are in danger of being broken. The tournament’s opener, a Thursday afternoon match between Mexico and South Africa, attracted an average of 6,309,000 viewers while Mexico secured a 2-0 win in Mexico City, per Fox, which cited the same combination of ratings data as above on Friday.
That meant that, according to Fox, Mexico-South Africa was the most-watched men’s World Cup opening match and non-USMNT World Cup group stage telecast in English-language U.S. history.
Canada salvaged a point in its FIFA World Cup opener. An elusive victory is next on the to-do list.
Everything is lined up nicely for a 30th-ranked team that is moving from Toronto to Vancouver for its next two group-stage games. A matchup against No. 56 Qatar is up on Thursday ahead of a meeting with No. 19 Switzerland on June 24.
Cyle Larin’s 78th-minute goal in a 1-1 draw with Bosnia-Herzegovina electrified Toronto Stadium on Friday but more scoring punch will be needed if Canada is going to make a move in Group B.
“Getting that first game out of the way, it’s a point, something no one else has ever done before,” said Canadian midfielder Liam Millar. “We’ll take that on board. We’ll take the positives from it and try to do better next game.”
Bosnia hushed the partisan crowd in the 21st minute when Jovo Lukic opened the scoring by flicking a header past goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau off a corner kick.
The 64th-ranked visitors were taller, feisty and not intimidated by the big stage. Canada seemed to fight some early nerves in the first half as the 43,002 spectators hung on every play.
The tournament co-hosts had some great chances but the ball movement was disjointed at times. An offence that has struggled to find its form could not take advantage of its opportunities.
It’s a storyline that will only be vanquished once Canada starts putting balls in the net. Qatar struggled mightily as the host side in 2022 but rebounded a year later by winning the Asian Cup.
The Canadians, now with one draw and six losses on their all-time World Cup record, will try to feed off a crowd of over 52,000 at B.C. Place.
Defender Alistair Johnston felt his side has done well handling the emotions that come with this tournament.
“We did a great job of keeping everything really normal, which I’m happy with,” he said. “That’s probably one of the most difficult parts about having a home World Cup. There’s so much going on — tickets, fans, everything. But I do think that we did a great job and we’re going to continue to build on (it).
“But that support, if we can keep having that, it’s going to be a pretty special group stage here. I do really fancy our chances to pick up the points required to get out of the group.”
Team speed picked up significantly in the second half of the opener, helped in part by coach Jesse Marsch’s decision to make several substitutions. Larin came on just two minutes before his goal.
Star left back Alphonso Davies was missed as he continues to recover from a hamstring injury. A return to play in Vancouver, a city he knows well from his time with Major League Soccer’s Whitecaps, would take the energy to an even higher level.
Marsch will have other big lineup decisions to make as well.
Jonathan David is the team’s all-time leading scorer but he came off in the 61st minute for substitute Promise David after a choppy first half.
“We’ll need him in this tournament to be at his best and find a way to use this experience to be better for the next one,” Marsch said. “Because without him in top form, we’re not the same team that we have the potential to be.”
Tani Oluwaseyi joined David up top in the starting 11 before coming off for Larin in the 76th minute.
Canada was held without a goal over three losses in its World Cup debut in 1986. Davies scored the country’s first goal at this tournament four years ago in Qatar but the team again went 0-3.
A victory would be historic for the Canadian side and provide some valuable momentum for the group-stage finale.
If Canada finishes first in its pool, it would remain in Vancouver for a Round-of-32 matchup on July 2.

Gear was taken from the team’s vehicles sometime Friday night during their move from a training site in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., to its World Cup base camp in Kansas City, authorities said.
Sgt. Phil DiMartino of the Kansas City Police Department confirmed to The Associated Press on Saturday that two people had been taken into custody.
“Yesterday, officials in Kansas City learned at some point between their over-the-road transport from Florida to their arrival at the training facility in Kansas City, goods belonging to the English national team were stolen,” Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas told reporters.
“Public safety officials at the local, state and federal levels are working to trace where in the United States the items were seized and all the individuals who may have been involved.”
The English Football Association confirmed the theft but declined to provide further details because of the ongoing police investigation.
The Athletic reported Saturday afternoon that several items — mainly footwear — of the stolen training kit have been recovered by England.
Ranked No. 4 in the world, England chose Kansas City for a base camp for its central U.S. location.
The Three Lions’ Group L opener is on Wednesday against Croatia in Arlington, Texas. England also will play Ghana on June 23 in Foxborough, Mass., and Panama on June 27 in East Rutherford, N.J.

According to the New York Police Department, a group approached the 17-year-old after Wednesday’s game and an argument ensued. The NYPD shared a photo on X of a suspect who allegedly punched and kicked the teen, who lapsed into a coma after suffering a seizure.

The NYPD has not provided an update on the condition of the teenager, whose name is being withheld.
Violent incidents have flared up in the city as the Knicks seek their first NBA championship in 53 years. They took a 3-1 lead in the best-of-seven series with a 107-106 victory against the San Antonio Spurs on Wednesday.
Police arrested at least 15 people following that game. In addition, videos on social media appeared to show fans throwing eggs at Spurs star Victor Wembanyama as he entered his team’s hotel.
“Once again, there were large crowds of people who engaged in incredibly reckless and dangerous behavior last night both during and after the game,” the NYPD said in a statement Thursday. “This demonstrates exactly why the NYPD has increased our presence in and around Madison Square Garden.”
Game 5 is Saturday night in San Antonio, Texas. Game 6, if necessary, will be at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday night.

According to the resale market, they start at $1,735.
That was the “get in price” for the U.S. men’s national team’s second World Cup group stage match against Australia on the secondary market by Saturday afternoon, according to TicketData.
That represents an enormous 61% increase over the last three days, with much of that spike coming following the USMNT’s exceptional performance in a 4-1 rout of Paraguay in Friday night’s World Cup opener in Inglewood, Calif.
There is plenty of time for the price to climb further, as the match is not until Friday at 3 p.m. ET in Seattle.
The Americans’ Group D finale on June 25 against Turkey back in Inglewood, Calif., has seen an even greater proportional spike over the same stretch, with the get-in price up 73% to $1,516.
If this reflects surging expectations for a squad that has seen mixed performances in recent years, it’s understandable.
Friday’s victory, powered by two goals from Folarin Balogun, another from Gio Reyna and a Paraguay own-goal, marked the first time the USMNT had ever scored four times in a World Cup finals match and only the third time they had ever won by three goals. The other two three-goal triumphs were 3-0 group stage wins over Belgium and Paraguay in the inaugural 1930 tournament played in Uruguay.
Bookmakers also are improving their view of the USMNT. Their average World Cup title-winning odds dropped to 40-to-1, according to OddsPortal, after beginning the tournament at 50-to-1 or higher, depending on the oddsmaker.
The Americans are now the fourth-most-expensive draw in the tournament as of early Saturday afternoon, behind only co-host Mexico, Brazil and Portugal.

The Liberty — who are 9-4 overall and 4-0 in the Cup standings — will play host to Washington on Sunday afternoon. After that, the Liberty will visit Chicago on Wednesday in their final pool-play game.
On Thursday, the Liberty defeated the host Atlanta Dream, 104-90, in New York’s highest-scoring game since the season opener.
It was also New York’s sixth straight win as the Liberty shot 54% from the floor and 52% on 3-pointers (16-for-31). The Liberty also had a 40-24 advantage on the boards against an Atlanta team that entered the game No. 1 in the WNBA in rebounding.
“We were just ready,” said Liberty guard Marine Johannes, who scored 17 points.
In fact, for the first time in franchise history, the Liberty had five players score at least 16 points.
The only thing not perfect about the Liberty right now is that point guard Sabrina Ionescu hasn’t played since May 24 due to a back injury, although she has been practicing lately.
Breanna Stewart leads New York in scoring (20.4), Jonquel Jones leads the team in rebounds (9.6) and rookie Pauline Astier tops the squad in assists (3.8).
Meanwhile, Washington (5-6) is 2-2 in the Commissioner’s Cup.
The Mystics beat Toronto 86-85 on Friday night on Sonia Citron’s turnaround jumper at the buzzer.
Washington prevailed despite a season-high 22 turnovers, shooting just 2-of-18 on 3-pointers and playing without standout Kiki Iriafen, who has an injured right ankle. She is averaging 14.6 points and a team-high 8.9 rebounds.
The Mystics are largely a product of their nine first-round picks, including seven they have selected since 2022. Citron (third overall) and Iriafen (fourth overall) were drafted in 2025, and the former leads the team in scoring (17.1). Then there’s 6-5 center Shakira Austin, a top contender for the WNBA’s Most Improved Player award. Austin is averaging 15.1 points, 8.5 rebounds and 2.9 assists — all career highs.
That’s some progression for the 25-year-old Austin, who was the third overall pick in 2022.
Two other Mystics first-rounders of note are a pair of rookies: 6-7 center Lauren Betts (fourth overall in 2026) and point guard Georgia Amoore (sixth overall in 2025).
Betts scored a season-high 18 points on Friday, making 8 of 9 shots. With Iriafen out, she got extended minutes — a season-high 21. Amoore leads Washington in assists (3.8).
The Liberty will be the more rested team on Sunday.
And, in the only game between Washington and New York so far this season, the Liberty won, 98-93, in overtime. Iriafen led the Mystics with 20 points and 12 rebounds, but she is likely unavailable on Sunday.
On the positive side for Washington, Citron is feeling better after an injury caused her to miss a game on June 2. “My foot is good,” Citron said. “I’m happy to be back.”
