It has finally been confirmed just whether or not Gervonta Davis remains WBA lightweight champion.

‘Tank’ has endured a turbulent 12 months, with inactivity and issues outside of the ring leading to many questions over his status as WBA lightweight champion.

Despite it being widely believed that Davis had already been stripped of the gold, it has been recently reported that ‘Tank’ was in talks for a WBA title clash with Floyd Schofield, potentially paving the way for him to retain his belt if he was to go ahead with the contest.

Those hopes looked to soon end after it has now emerged that Davis has reached out to WBO welterweight champion Devin Haney over a potential battle, and that has led the WBA to act promptly.

In an official statement, the WBA confirmed once and for all that ‘Tank’ is the champion in recess, and they have ordered Floyd Schofield and Lucas Bahdi to fight for the vacant belt.

“The World Boxing Association (WBA) has declared Gervonta Davis the Champion in Recess at lightweight while designating Floyd Schofield and Lucas Bahdi to fight for the division’s now-vacant title.

The Championships Committee of the pioneering organization reviewed Davis’ legal situation and reached its decision after determining that the ongoing proceedings could prevent him from fulfilling his championship obligations in the short and medium term.”

While some fans may be frustrated to miss out on a fight between Davis and Schofield, it is a good sign that the WBA are set to finally get their world title active again, having not been defended since the bout between ‘Tank’ and Lamont Roach in March 2025.

Manchester United only moved Alejandro Garnacho on to Chelsea last summer in a £40m move, but the Argentine already looks to be eyeing another transfer

Football fans have claimed that Alejandro Garnacho “misses home” after reposting a TikTok relating to Manchester United despite moving to Chelsea last summer. The 21-year-old secured a £40million move to Stamford Bridge during the business end of the transfer window, after falling out of favour under Ruben Amorim.

However, the Argentina international has failed to make much of a mark in west London since his arrival, bagging just a single Premier League goal and four assists since his arrival. Instead, Garnacho spent a large part of 2025/26 playing second fiddle to Pedro Neto, making just 14 appearances in the club’s starting XI.

Despite no longer playing for United, the winger’s TikTok account – which boasts 6.2m followers – continues to be made up of posts relating to his time at the club. There also is not a single Chelsea post in sight on his main feed, although he has reposted a number of videos of him representing the Blues.

His latest repost, however, has fans speculating that he is homesick away from Greater Manchester. Garnacho recently took to the social media platform to re-share a photo of the line-up from the 2024 FA Cup final displayed in flags.

It’s a match that Garnacho played a huge part in as United secured a shock 2-1 upset at Manchester City, alongside the likes of Bruno Fernandes, Marcus Rashford and Scott McTominay, to name a few.

As a result of the bizarre and untimely post, a number of fans have speculated on social media whether it could be a sign that Garnacho misses his former club at present. In the replies section of a post about the video shared to X, one person wrote: “He misses home,” with a laughing emoji.

Another said: “Dude want to come back to Man Utd by all means,” while a third observed: “He’s really missing the good old days.”

A fourth asked: “What’s he trying to do?” while a fifth commented: “Bring him back home.”

However, not all fans were so willing to welcome Garnacho back with open arms considering how his exit from United played out. One sarcastically said: “No take backsies. Bye bye,” while a second vented: “The team he thought he was too good for.”

It seems as though Garnacho burned his bridges before leaving Old Trafford, lashing out at his team’s performances – especially after missing out on the Europa League final to Tottenham Hotspur.

Speaking to the media in the aftermath of that 1-0 loss last May, as well as a 15th-place Premier League finish, the forward said: “Obviously it’s hard for everyone. Our season was s***.

“We didn’t beat anyone in the league. We lacked a lot of things. When you don’t score goals, you always need more. Until we reached the final, I played every round.

“And I played 20 minutes today – I don’t know. I’m going to try to enjoy the summer and see what happens next.”

England manager Thomas Tuchel has defended his full-back selection policy after confirming Reece James will miss Saturday’s World Cup match against Panama.

As revealed by BBC Sport this week, James was assessed by England medics following Tuesday’s goalless draw against Ghana after complaining of a hamstring issue.

Tuchel has since confirmed that the Chelsea right-back has not travelled to New Jersey from their Kansas City base for their final Group L game against Panama on Saturday (22:00 BST). But he insists James has a chance of playing in England’s possible last-32 match next week.

However, BBC Sport understands that James is a significant doubt for the start of the knockout stages, should England qualify.

James’ injury – and the calf issue that caused Tino Livramento to return home from the United States – has thrown into question Tuchel’s decision to bring just three recognised full-backs to the World Cup.

Djed Spence, James and Livramento were the only genuine full-backs selected.

Nico O’Reilly, who played at left-back for Manchester City last season, is also in the squad – but he came through the ranks at Etihad Stadium as a midfielder. Dan Burn has also played at left-back but is recognised as a centre-back.

Spence and central defenders Jarell Quansah and Ezri Konsa are Tuchel’s alternative options at right-back.

Nevertheless, Tuchel said: “Yes, I am [happy with my options at right-back]. I selected the team, so I’m very happy with everything with the characteristic of the players and strengths that they give us.

“We would love to have every single key player, we would love to have them available, it’s not available – we find solutions, it’s what we do. It’s a tournament, we move on.”

James and Livramento, in particular, have a chequered injury history and Tuchel’s decision to take both to the World Cup is likely to be called into question.

Tuchel, though, is confident James will play again in the World Cup should England progress.

“It’s a minor hamstring issue, he’s not been able to train the last two days,” confirmed Tuchel.

“He’s now on an accelerated rehabilitation program and we take it game by game, but we strongly believe that he will be available [during the tournament].”

There was better news with regards to the availability of Bukayo Saka, Declan Rice and Elliot Anderson, who Tuchel said would all be available to face Panama.

Rice (calf) and Anderson (glute) missed training on Thursday – but returned on Friday.

Tuchel confirmed Saka is ready to start after coming off the bench in the opening two matches because of a long-term Achilles tendinitis complaint.

Jockey Dylan Gibbons has made consistency his watchword this season and intends to maintain that focus into the upcoming racing period.

Achieving Group 1 victories represents the ultimate goal for any jockey, and a triumph aboard Infancy in the Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m), the final major race of the 2025-26 racing term, would provide a perfect flourish to his successful year.

Gibbons, a talented apprentice, was once considered part of the next wave of young riders coming through the ranks, alongside notable names like Zac Lloyd and Tyler Schiller. However, a shoulder injury sustained in late 2024 disrupted his momentum.

Returning to the saddle last year, he worked assiduously to secure a solid position in Sydney’s fiercely competitive racing landscape. While this required time and considerable perseverance, the rewards began to materialise.

With 38 metropolitan wins in Sydney this term, Gibbons is currently positioned eighth on the jockeys’ premiership table. His season highlights include Group 3 victories on Southend in The Baillieu and Piggyback in the Parramatta Cup.

“If you go back a season, things dropped off a bit compared to how they were going when I had the claim, so I had to rebuild, so to speak,” Gibbons stated.

“I wanted to re-establish myself, be a consistent city rider, and keep chipping away at the winners.
“I’ve had a good provincial season, and those horses can eventually turn into city winners. Fortunately enough, I’m also getting near the forty (metropolitan winners) mark which has been good.”

Gibbons has already celebrated two Group 1 successes: guiding Explosive Jack to victory in the 2023 Sydney Cup (3200m) and Kalapour in the 2024 Tancred Stakes (2400m).

He is hopeful of adding to that tally when he partners Infancy in the Tattersall’s Tiara, expressing confidence in the $51 outsider’s potential to surprise.

Infancy produced a strong showing when finishing second in the Group 2 Sapphire Stakes (1200m) in April. She subsequently raced in midfield during the Luskin Star Stakes (1300m) at Scone, and again in the Bob Charley Stakes (1200m), which was dominated by the front-runner Wanaruah.

Although the filly will need some luck from an awkward draw and a solid pace, Gibbons believes she will be in contention if these elements align.

“She has over-achieved her whole career and done a remarkable job,” he commented.

“The 1400 metres is getting near her maximum distance, but when she was in that brutally run 1300 (Luskin Star Stakes) with Whinchat and Phearson leading, they ran it like a mile race and she was there to the fifty metres and got chopped out.
“If she can get the right run, she has got a wicked turn of foot.”

Gibbons also has the ride on the tough sprinter Brudenell for Lees in the W J Healy Stakes (1200m) and would relish seeing the dual Listed winner secure an overdue Group success.

“He is one of my favourite horses. I’ve won four or five races on him now,” Gibbons said.

“He is honest as the day is long, and he’s only gotten better with age. If things go his way, you know he’s going to give one hundred and ten per cent, and it would be nice to see him get a Group win.”

Gibbons has a strong book of eight rides at Eagle Farm, with Geemes ($5.50) rated by bookmakers as his best prospect for victory in the Listed Tattersall’s Gold Crown (2100m).

The Toronto Maple Leafs have selected Gavin McKenna with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 NHL Draft. One of the most dynamic playmakers in this draft class, McKenna should give the Maple Leafs an offensive boost immediately.

McKenna just wrapped up his freshman season at Penn State, and the transition from junior hockey to the collegiate level wasn’t a smooth one initially. However, after a slow start, McKenna found his groove and finished the season with 15 goals and 36 assists 35 games. His 51 points ranked third in the Big Ten, and McKenna led the Nittany Lions to the NCAA Tournament, where they lost to Minnesota-Duluth in the first round.

Prior to his career at Penn State, McKenna posted gaudy numbers with the Medicine Hat Tigers in the WHL. In 2024-25, McKenna tallied 41 goals and 88 points in 56 games while helping the Tigers capture a WHL title. McKenna and Medicine Hat fell just shy of a Memorial Cup title, losing to the London Knights in the championship game.

It might be a bit much to ask McKenna to ride shotgun alongside Auston Matthews right out of the gate, but he has the skill to make an instant impact. Can McKenna land among the best No. 1 picks of this century? If he can, that would be a huge boost to a Toronto offense that finished in the middle of the league last year.

With the No. 2 overall pick, the San Jose Sharks took Swedish winger Ivar Stenberg, who pushed McKenna to be the top selection in this draft. San Jose adds yet another elite offensive weapon to its arsenal with Macklin Celebrini and Will Smith already there. Stenberg will help replace William Eklund, who was recent traded to the Ottawa Senators.

After trading defenseman Bowen Byram to the Chicago Blackhawks for the No. 4 overall pick, the hometown Buffalo Sabres replaced Byram with Daxon Rudolph, one of the best playmaking defensemen in this class. Those moves will be analyzed for years to come.

Lionel Messi will start on the bench for Argentina football against Jordan to complete their World Cup 2026 group stage.

The Albiceleste are defending their title and have started in magnificent form behind Messi’s prolific run of five goals from two games in victories over Algeria and Austria.

Messi is the leading contender to win this year’s golden boot, one clear of France forwards Kylian Mbappe and Ousmane Dembele.

Messi (18) is also two clear of Mbappe (16) as the tournament’s all-time record goalscorer, but that record could be threatened with Lionel Scaloni opting to hold the 39-year-old back for the Group J finale.
