10 Worst Book-to-TV Adaptations
It’s nothing new or revolutionary for TV shows to base themselves on books, especially in this modern age of streaming. Heck, some of the most successful shows of all time, like Game of Thrones, are based on books. Since most of these shows have source material to fall back on, it’s easy to create something that is enjoyable and that keeps people coming back for more. Unfortunately, it’s even easier to muck everything up.
Indeed, there have been many TV series that have been based on books, but that do not give their sources any sort of boost in popularity—in fact, sometimes, it’s quite the opposite. It’s often very disappointing for fans of the books (naturally) when these shows come through and set fire to everything the fans loved, and it always leaves a bad taste in people’s mouths. These are the worst book-to-TV adaptations of all time, some of which were canceled quickly before they had the chance to do any more damage.

‘The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power’ (2022–Present)
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is an adaptation of several works by J. R. R. Tolkien, who penned an enormous universe consisting of thousands of years of history that collectively became known as Middle-earth. There have been several popular film adaptations over the years, so hopes were high when a new show coming out promised to delve into some of the more elaborate and fascinating parts of Middle-earth’s history that hadn’t gotten the chance to be filmed yet.
The Rings of Power was a resounding success with critics because it is technically impressive. The visuals are gorgeous, the action exciting, and the acting is very well done. However, for fantasy fans and for die-hard fans of Tolkien’s work, the show has proven to be a disaster. It destroys much of the lore that one of the greatest writers of all time crafted with such care, and deviates from the source material far too much for its own good. It’s not a terrible show by any means, but it is a major disappointment, especially for those who were expecting something on the level of Peter Jackson‘s acclaimed film trilogy.

‘Nancy Drew’ (2019–2023)
The Nancy Drew series of YA mystery novels has been immensely popular and has seen a few TV adaptations in the nearly 100 years since they’ve been around. All the books claim to be written by Carolyn Keene, but this is actually a pseudonym that numerous different authors have adopted over the years. In any case, the recent incarnation of the series created by The CW is really bad in pretty much all respects.
The main problem with it was that it lacked any of the spirit that made the novels so popular in the first place. The eponymous character is generally known for her bubbly and optimistic demeanor, never backing down in the face of adversity. But in this show, everyone is super moody, and the show bears an overly dark tone, trying to appeal to audiences way beyond the books’ level of maturity. The cast is good, and the show is visually pleasing, but it was just too somber and depressing, and had no reason to last for four whole years.

‘Beauty & the Beast’ (2012–2016)
There are so many adaptations of the original Beauty and the Beast fairytale that it’s impossible to count them all. But among the worst of them is the 2012 series from The CW, which inexplicably decided to go for a more murder mystery route rather than an expansion of the story itself. To its credit, it is a reboot of a 1987 CBS series, but this doesn’t help it at all. Not only does it have to live up to its predecessor, but to the original story, as well.
It did neither of those things. There was zero chemistry between its two main actors, who, in accordance with the story, are supposed to fall in love, and the mystery at its heart was just not that interesting or suspenseful. The series was able to pick itself up and dust itself off as it went on, but the first two seasons are one heck of a slog that’s nearly impossible to get through. Truth be told, while the later seasons are fine, they aren’t worth the agonizing effort of watching Season 1.

‘The Rook’ (2019)
For all of the terrible TV shows that overstay their welcome, at least The Rook had the decency to remain a miniseries. Based on a 2012 novel, The Rook bears a rather interesting premise. Taking place in London, the supernatural drama thriller follows a woman named Myfanwy, who wakes up on the Millennium Bridge surrounded by dead bodies, completely unaware of how she got there or what killed all those people. Eventually, she discovers that she is a sleeper agent with a top-secret British intelligence service.
All of that sounds great, right? Unfortunately, the miniseries fell flat in terms of execution. It failed to make its promising storyline interesting, and deviated so far from the novel upon which it is based that it’s nearly unrecognizable. But perhaps worst of all, it’s just so bloody boring. It could have been a really exciting psychological thriller, but they get all the interesting stuff out of the way early and don’t really keep up their momentum.

’13 Reasons Why’ (2017–2020)
13 Reasons Why starts out promising. It opens up with a teenage girl’s death, with her leaving behind a series of tapes, each one listing a reason why she died. These tapes are found by her secret admirer, who, upon listening to them, learns that each of the 13 tapes names specific individuals, with the request being that the tapes be sent to those people so that they can understand their actions and the untimely death of their classmate.
The first season is actually pretty good and remains an intriguing, yet tragic tale of the darker side of adolescence. Unfortunately, the show seriously overstayed its welcome after that, moving far beyond the source material that the original novel provided due to its resounding success. Each subsequent season of the series is pretty terrible and ruined the greatness of the first season entirely. 13 Reasons Why is an example of a show that should have quit while it was ahead and stayed a miniseries rather than trampling all over what made it so popular in the first place.

‘The Walking Dead: World Beyond’ (2020–2021)
The original run of The Walking Dead inspired a few spin-offs here and there, but none have been as truly terrible as The Walking Dead: World Beyond. All the shows are based on a series of comics-turned-graphic novels, and gained pretty positive reception, even though viewership kind of fell off towards the end. The show is pretty basic, with it being about a zombie apocalypse, albeit featuring a huge number of characters, with the spin-offs sort of extending the plotline.
Perhaps what made World Beyond so bad was that it brought nothing new to the table: no new interesting characters, no new developments in the zombie pandemic, no nothing. On top of that, it came out while the original series was still running, making the entire franchise feel overly crowded and hard to swallow. Maybe audiences just needed a break, but World Beyond offered little to reinvent the universe, and didn’t really do the comics any justice, either.

‘Supergirl’ (2015–2021)
For all of its campy awfulness, it’s frankly a miracle that Supergirl lasted as long as it did. Supergirl was conceived as a part of the Arrowverse, which has most certainly seen its share of ups and downs over the years. To its credit, Supergirl‘s main cast are experienced and really give it their all during each of their performances. The problem isn’t the actors, it’s literally everything else. The script and dialogue were cringe-inducing, the “action” sequences are cheesy and awkward, but the worst part of it all is the show’s atrocious CGI. Oh man, that CGI.
From obvious green screens to unconvincing visual effects, Supergirl has some of the worst CGI ever seen on television. Clips of it even went viral online because of how horrid the CGI is, becoming the subject of mockery from fans and non-fans alike. Even though that’s the most glaring issue in the show, there’s a whole lot more about it that misses the mark by a mile. Even though it’s based on comic books rather than a novel, Supergirl most definitely counts as one of the worst book-to-TV adaptations ever.

‘Inhumans’ (2017)
Inhumans is frequently cited as the worst ever drama series and the worst comic book-to-television adaptation, and it’s most certainly not hard to see why. It was such a travesty that it only lasted eight episodes before being canceled and swept under the rug. Unfortunately, people didn’t forget how atrocious the show was. Honestly, thank goodness this show isn’t part of the MCU, or it could’ve ruined the entirety of the franchise.
Critics were extremely harsh with their reviews, stating that Inhumans tries to do a lot of things, but remarkably, fails to do any of them… or at least, fails to do any of them well. Other critics were even more harsh, saying that calling it a train wreck is almost too generous, because, at least a train wreck, people can’t look away from, whereas Inhumans is so easy to turn off. It’s a mess, and it’s no surprise to anyone that this show was canceled so soon.

‘Are You There, Chelsea?’ (2012)
In general, biographical sitcoms can work, especially biographical sitcoms based on comedians’ lives. Take a look at shows like Seinfeld or Everybody Hates Chris, for example. Both are based on the lives of their comedian creators, and are some of the greatest sitcoms ever conceived. So, when a sitcom was announced based on Chelsea Handler‘s memoir, there was no reason to expect the level of awful that it actually delivered.
The memoir is mostly a collection of humorous anecdotes from Handler’s life, many of them awkward or embarrassing. It’s not exactly high art, but it’s enjoyable and fairly relatable. The show, however, was nothing short of an atrocity. To say it wasn’t funny would be a huge understatement. It lacked every ounce of the dry wit that helped launch the memoir onto the bestseller list, and for all of its attempts, lacked anything original or even remotely humorous. Are You There, Chelsea? is one of the worst sitcoms of all time, and one of the worst adaptations of a book ever made. It’s no surprise to anyone at all that it only lasted one season.

‘Caillou’ (1997–2011)
Ask any parent out there, and they’ll tell you no children’s show grinds their gears more than the critically-panned Caillou, an animated series about a four-year-old French-Canadian boy based on a series of picture books. Generally speaking, kids’ shows should be educational, and should present children with ways to deal with real-life situations while also helping them develop basic life skills like reading and writing.
Caillou offered none of that. The titular character is nothing but a whiny, spoiled brat who always gets his way by kicking and screaming or otherwise throwing some sort of tantrum. At no point does it present children with how to deal with negative emotions; instead, it spreads the message that they can get pretty much anything they want if they scream loud enough, so it’s no surprise that parents loathe this show with every fiber of their being. Heck, even non-parents can’t stand the little bald brat and his frequent meltdowns. There have been numerous attempts at a revival, but these have always been met with severe rebuttals from the public. Caillou is a terrible influence on kids, and pretty much everybody hates it, so there’s no doubt that it is, without question, the worst book-to-TV adaptation ever conceived.

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s wedding guest list was a who’s who of some of the most famous people in the world.
The singer and the NFL star, both 36, invited fellow A-listers to their Friday, July 3, ceremony at Madison Square Garden in New York City, with around 1,000 of her famous friends and his Kansas City Chiefs teammates, among others, making the cut.
Ahead of the nuptials, a source exclusively told Us Weekly in April, “It won’t be a huge wedding, but there will be many celebrities.”
According to a second insider, Swift and Kelce went “back and forth between inviting everyone and keeping it small and private.”

Shortly after getting engaged to Kelce in August 2025, Swift shared her reluctance to narrow down the guest list for the pair’s wedding.
“I know it’s gonna be fun to plan because I think the only stressful weddings are the ones where you have a small amount [of room] and people are on the bubble and you have to evaluate or assess your relationship with them to see if they should be there. I’m not gonna do that,” she revealed on The Graham Norton Show in October 2025 before joking, “I shouldn’t have said any of that.”

Now, new reports have emerged suggesting there was a shocking moment that stunned guests, all thanks to her close pal Lena Dunham.
The timeline of the wedding has remained under wraps as Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s guests were reportedly subjected to strict searches and were made to sign an NDA.
Madison Square Garden played host to Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s multi-day nuptials into the 4th of July holiday, bringing together a star-studded list of Hollywood celebrities and sports stars.
There was so much hush-hush in the buildup to the main event, which was held Friday night at the famous venue. However, fans couldn’t miss it as the surrounding MSG vicinity was flooded with heavy police presence and workers making the location “super posh” to host the event.
The now-wedded couple also made guests sign an NDA, which explains why very little has emerged about how the Adam Sandler-officiated nuptials went down.
According to the BBC, stars seen entering the venue for the wedding include Selena Gomez, Camila Cabello, Hugh Grant, Gracie Abrams, Ellie Goulding, Graham Norton, and Dakota Johnson.
It appears they still tried to keep things modest, as reports claim Swift didn’t use any bridesmaids, but instead, she and Kelce tapped their brothers as best man and “man of honor.”
However, rumor mill suggests the ultra-exclusive nuptials almost descended into absolute chaos, thanks to a cringeworthy toast from Swift’s long-time friend Lena Dunham.
A “mole” told the Daily Mail that Thursday’s wedding reception was filled with “lots of speeches” as close friends and family took turns to extol the couple’s love story.
However, Dunham seemingly went off-script when it was her turn to speak by saying that “American football is just straight guys reenacting gay p-rn.”
According to the news outlet, the source noted that the “Girls” creator’s remark drew a “divided” response of “gasps and laughs” from guests, which included Kelce’s teammates and NFL colleagues.
Yet, the “Bad Blood” singer reportedly took it with a pinch of salt, declaring Dunham a “genius” after the speech.
An A-List Star Was Reportedly Denied Access To Taylor Swift’s Wedding
According to a second Daily Mail source, gossip spread during the event that a household-name celebrity desired to have made the guest list and quietly reached out for an invitation but was politely turned down.
The identity of the said celebrity was kept under wraps, but the news outlet claims that their name would set tongues wagging in many Hollywood circles.
The described situation mimics the current state of things between the “Blank Space” singer and her former best pal, Blake Lively.
Both stars had been friends for over a decade, but seemingly fell out after Swift was dragged into Lively’s nasty court battle with her former costar Justin Baldoni.

The situation soured further as Swift faced the prospect of being subjected to a deposition, before her text and email conversation with the “Gossip Girl” star was released.
In one bombshell text to Lively, Swift called Baldoni a “b-tch” with a “tiny violin,” and another in which she said Baldoni was not “strategic” in using her song “My Tears Ricochet With Us” in “It Ends With Us.”
“In April 26, 2024 messages, Lively and Swift discussed a plan to use Swift’s song in the film’s trailer,” the court documents stated, per Page Six. “Swift wrote: ‘If Justin was strategic, he would be like no Taylor Swift in the trailer because that gives you more power over the film, that’s your ally not his.’”
“Lively responded: ‘You are so right…He should’ve run from your music…How stupid. This was his only shot at having the appearance of an upper hand,’” the docs continued.

Meanwhile, social media is filled with Swifties praising them for sticking to each other over the years.
In a nod to Swift’s penchant for creating hit songs from her past relationship, an X user wrote, “If anybody is waiting for a divorced album, go f-ck yourself. They are married for eternity.”
Another fan said, “My heart is melting; she truly got her love story, and it makes the rest of us believe a little more.”
“From friendship bracelets to wedding rings, Taylor and Travis have written their own timeless love story,” a third user penned, while another person said, “Congratulations to Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce. Half the internet is celebrating… the other half is already predicting how long it’ll last.”

Forget ‘Fallout,’ Walton Goggins’ 6-Part Western Masterpiece Is a Monster Hit on Streaming
The last few years have been nothing short of stellar for the great Timothy Olyphant, who has settled into a key role in Ridley Scott’s latest sci-fi series, Alien: Earth. After starring in the first season as Kirsh, it has been confirmed that Olyphant will return and star in Season 2, which is now shooting and eyeing a 2027 return. Olyphant has also become a Star Wars sensation thanks to his role as Cobb Vanth in The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett, and while fans are ready to see him show up again, there don’t appear to be any plans for him to come back in the immediate future. Outside just the last few years, though, Olyphant has been starring in popular Western movies and TV shows, and one of his most famous pieces of work is staging an unexpected comeback.
When it comes to nailing down Olyphant’s most famous role, it would be hard to name more than a few without listing Raylan Givens, who he played in multiple seasons of the legendary Western series, Justified. The show was written and created for TV by Graham Yost, who is also the lead writer on Apple TV’s sci-fi sensation starring Rebecca Ferguson, Silo. Justified, which also stars now mega-star Walton Goggins (Fallout), ran for six seasons between 2010 and 2015 — an impressive turnaround that’s almost unheard of nowadays — and the show has since found a streaming home on Hulu as an FX-produced series. Over 10 years after Justified went off the air, the show is experiencing a surprise comeback on VOD, where it’s become one of the most popular purchases in a few countries.
What Is the ‘Justified’ Spin-Off Show About?
Back in 2023, seven years after Justified went off the air, Timothy Olyphant returned as Raylan Givens in a new spin-off series, Justified: City Primeval, which consists of only eight episodes. Despite Olyphant returning to the lead role, fans weren’t too hot on the Justified offshoot, as most felt it abandoned the principals of what made the original series so popular in the first place. An official synopsis for the show reads as follows:
“Raylan Givens trades Kentucky hollows for Detroit’s gritty streets, drawn into a deadly clash with Clement Mansell, a slick, sociopathic killer known as the Oklahoma Wildman. As Raylan navigates a corrupt city and unravels a murder case, he must outsmart a cunning judge-killer while protecting his teenage daughter, blurring the line between justice and vengeance in this tense, high-stakes crime saga.”

Brad Pitt is certainly no stranger to success on the Apple TV charts, with the Hollywood icon now one of the flagship faces of Apple’s movie division. This is mostly thanks to the enormous success of Joseph Kosinski‘s racing blockbuster F1, which starred Pitt as Sonny Hayes. One of the highlights of 2025’s summer of cinema, F1 was a huge success both commercially and critically, even becoming the highest-grossing original movie of the year and Apple Original Film’s highest-grossing theatrical release of all time, scoring $633 million worldwide against a budget reported to range between $200 million and $300 million.
Not just a smash hit in theaters, F1 also earned Oscars glory, taking home the prize for Best Sound from this year’s 98th Academy Awards ceremony, and even earning a nod in the coveted Best Picture category. For all its dominance, especially having just surpassed the 200-day mark on the streamer’s top ten in America, you’d be forgiven for thinking this was Pitt’s only Apple TV movie. However, in 2024, Pitt teamed up with his Ocean’s castmate George Clooney to deliver the arguably underrated action comedy Wolfs to the streamer.

While mulling it over in Central Park, he saw a musician playing John Lennon on a guitar, and he was hit with the “what if?” behind the smash-hit Run Away: what if you’re half-listening to a busker playing in a park, and you look up and realize it’s your drug-addicted daughter who’s been missing for six months?
Lived experiences and conversations become a springboard, like for Hold Tight, which came out of a dinner conversation with friends about their troubled teen, a decision to install spyware, and a debate about parental responsibilities in an uncertain world. The Stranger, on the other hand, was inspired by browsing history, in both senses of the phrase; he dug into all sorts of websites to mine real stories for inspiration, and doubled down on his personal belief that our searches aren’t private. Each of the “what ifs?” takes real life, flips it on its head, then goes back down to earth on a crash course with reality in Corben’s stories, and that’s why it’s so eminently easy to be drawn in.
‘Fool Me Once’ is a Masterclass in the Coben Formula
In 2024, Fool Me Once became one of the most-watched series in Netflix history, and it’s when people started really understanding the allure of the Coben binge. It’s a masterclass in his formula; not only does it pull on every heartstring and tick every box of the relatability checklist, it’s also one of the twistiest, shock-inducing, gasp-worthy plots of all time. There’s also one hell of a “what if?”: what if your recently murdered husband suddenly appeared on your nanny cam?
The story centers on Maya Stern (Michelle Keegan), a retired military pilot and newly single mother whose husband, Joe Burkett (Richard Armitage), was murdered during an attempted robbery, only months after her sister, Claire Walker (Natalie Anderson), was murdered in a crime that remains unsolved. Maya is attempting to deal with these dual traumas and move on with her life when she’s given a nanny cam by a friend, and discovers what looks like her dead husband playing with her two-year-old daughter. Maya confronts her nanny, who flees with the camera’s memory card, leaving her without the only evidence she had to prove she saw her husband alive.
Desperate for answers, she begins investigating her husband’s wealthy, powerful family, and discovers the gun used in the robbery was the same one that killed her sister. Convinced the murders are linked, she takes a headlong dive into the world of the Burkett family and their company, uncovering the dark secrets they’ve tried to hide. And what she finds – well, that’s a bit less about the Coben formula, and more about Coben magic, but if you’ve watched it you’ll know what I mean when I say she finds what she knew all along.
‘I Will Find You’ Brings Coben’s Formula Home
The first 12 Netflix series were produced for countries outside the US, so the adaptations not only had to be moved from page to screen, but also adjusted for cultural relevancy and impact in new cities. With I Will Find You, production moved stateside; setting the action in the novel’s original locations, Boston and New York. While significant changes were made to certain characters, the pacing, and the structure of the plot’s twists and turns, the series gives us our first glimpse at Coben’s America, and it’s almost impossible to look away.
The “what if?” is, as always, astounding: what if your son, who you were convicted of murdering, was spotted in a photograph alive and well? David Borroughs (Sam Worthington) still maintains his innocence while serving life in prison when he’s shown the photo by his ex-wife’s sister, Rachel Mills (Britt Lower). As he becomes even more adamant that he isn’t guilty of the crime, multiple attempts on David’s life take place in the prison to stop him from investigating the circumstances around his son’s death. He’s forced to break out of prison and pursue the answers as a fugitive, convincing his friends and family one at a time that he’s not a madman but a father who knows his son is still alive.
It’s a crazy set of circumstances on the face of things, but as the series progresses, you begin to realize what he’s doing is exactly what you’d do, even though it’s absolutely insane. That’s how relatable Coben’s characters are, and it’s somehow even more true when the tiny details – something as small as swapping a Yankees hat for a Red Sox one when returning to Boston from New York, to make sure you’re not standing out – make the plot on the screen feel so much more real. And while not everything is perfect about the adaptation, it’s wildly watchable from beginning to end.
The Coben formula is, at its core, a stroke of storytelling genius, one that enables a thriller to maintain both a real-life and out-of-body feel. From the “what ifs?” to the well-grounded emotional foundation he builds, every single aspect of the narrative is built in a way that’s ready-made to binge. And the good news for everyone with a Netflix account is this isn’t the end of the line for the ever-growing Coben universe – as we’ve learned by now, there are always more series on the way.

Every Duttonverse show, from prequels 1883 and 1923 to sequels Marshals and Dutton Ranch, is available on Paramount+, and so there may be some credence to that theory (you know, aside from Costner’s exit and all).
