The biggest complaint from fans is scheduling.

In 2025-26, the WSL replaced the Sunday 18:45 kick-off time with more noon matches, but this also proved unpopular.

“For an away day it’s horrible,” explains Arsenal fan Major. “You’ve got fans leaving at three o’clock in the morning or you’re going the night before and having to pay for a hotel.”

The revised time also clashes with grassroots football, played widely on a Sunday morning. It is a barrier for the younger generation to attend games.

Regular breaks throughout the season are an issue too. Earlier this year, former England defender Anita Asante suggested extended gaps between league games hampers momentum and rhythm for fans.

Another complaint from supporters is accessibility.

While Premier League-level grounds like Emirates Stadium and Everton’s Goodison Park are well equipped, smaller venues are less accommodating.

Jones, a wheelchair user, was frustrated by the lack of Blue Badge parking information when trying to attend London City’s away trip to Tottenham Hotspur.

“A lot of the issues I experience are with communication,” she says. “Every club has an accessibility section on their website but for Tottenham it is only for the Tottenham Hotspur stadium, not Brisbane Road [where Tottenham women play].”

Jones told BBC Sport the onus was on her to seek further information via email, to which she received a reply stating Blue Badge parking had sold out. Only after she spoke to Tottenham’s disability co-ordinator did she learn the venue did not have Blue Badge parking as it was in a residential area.

To compound matters, the wheelchair accessible allocation was on the opposite side of the ground to the away section, leaving Jones isolated.

Tottenham Hotspur told BBC Sport information for the venue is available on the website via the ‘Ask Spurs’ chatbot. However, after an internal investigation, they are making improvements.

Brisbane Road-specific guidance has since been added to their event day accessible parking section on ‘Ask Spurs’, while a matchday-specific guide is in the works.

A spokesperson for the club confirmed: “We’re working on a full Brisbane Road matchday guide for the website for next season to give parity with our Tottenham Hotspur Stadium information.”

That has provided them with the foundation to strengthen this summer by attracting top-quality players. Carrick and club chiefs were immediately keen to prioritise bolstering United’s lacklustre midfield in the transfer market, which they have now accomplished by securing Andrey Santos from Chelsea for £48million and Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa for £35m.

They have also bolstered squad depth, with goalkeeper Karl Darlow joining on a free transfer following the 35-year-old’s contract expiry at Leeds United. Winger Tynan Thompson, 18, was also recruited from Tottenham.

However, Maguire, who penned a one-year contract extension at Old Trafford in April, has been honest about United needing to keep up their momentum in terms of transfer activity. This could very well be the 33-year-old’s final season with the club, and he is eager to be part of a squad with the potential to win silverware before his departure.

Speaking to Sky Sports last weekend at Royal Birkdale during the Open Championship, Maguire said: “I played with Tielemans for a few months and he’s going to be an incredible signing, I have no doubt about that. He’s Belgium’s captain and played most games for Aston Villa last season. He was a big player there.

“Andrey Santos played yesterday [in the pre-season friendly against Wrexham]. He really impressed us in the first week and I think we’ve signed two great players there.”

He continued: “Hopefully more are coming through the door,” before adding: “As a player I want a big competitive squad. One that we can go and challenge for the big trophies so the more the merrier.”

What still remains unclear is who United will pursue as their next signing. They had been linked with Crysencio Summerville for a number of weeks, but the West Ham winger is set to complete a £60m transfer to Al-Hilal.

AC Milan’s Rafael Leao is another name that has consistently emerged, though United are believed to have not yet submitted a bid for the forward valued at £43m. It seems the club are not pursuing any wide forwards while they still have Marcus Rashford on their books.

Reports have also emerged of a potential third midfielder being brought in this summer. However, following failed pursuits of Sandro Tonali, Mateus Fernandes and Elliot Anderson, Fabrizio Romano reports that securing Warren Zaire-Emerey is also very unlikely, with the PSG youngster being merely a “dream” signing.

Charley Hull, one day before this week’s ISPS Handa Women’s Scottish Open, described what is required to succeed in links golf. She said she felt she was starting to become more comfortable with the style. 

“If you look at like the British Open,” Hull said, “there’s a lot of elements in it, and like British Opens always have like so many different kind of winners.

“So I feel like there is a little bit of luck involved and a lot of patience involved because you can get bad bounces, and you can get — have funky shots and stuff. So you just have to accept them and just kind of just deal with it.”

Just move on, right?

“Yeah,” she said, “you have to forget about it and move on.”

The thought will now be tested, it seems. Thursday, during the first round at Dundonald Links, Hull was putting for a birdie on the 521-yard, par-5 5th hole — and she walked off with a 9. 

– Putt 1: Hull had a 15-foot, left-to-right downhiller, which slid right and past the hole. It kept moving. After about five feet, the ball appeared to have lost momentum, only for it to pick back up and roll down the downslope and off the green. A few minutes earlier, playing partner Nelly Korda’s ball had finished in a similar spot, though Korda had been chipping from about 40 feet away. 

“That could be de-greened,” announcer Richard Kaufman said on the Golf Channel broadcast. “… I don’t believe that.”

– Chip 1: For par, Hull had about a 30-yard chip back up the green. Earlier, Korda had chipped eight feet past. Hull’s shot came up short and her ball rolled back down to her feet. 

“Well, this is turning into a nightmare,” Kaufman said on the broadcast. 

– Chip 2: Hull paused, stepped back and took a practice swing. Now playing for bogey, her ball again hit the slope and came back down. She walked back to her bag, shoved the club she’d been using back in it and grabbed a new stick. 

“I’m losing count now,” Kaufman said on the broadcast. “What are we up to, five, six, seven shots?”

– Chip 3: Hull was now playing her seventh shot, and it ended up like shots 5 and 6 — back at her feet. 

– Chip 4: Hull walked back over to her bag but didn’t take a practice swing. This time, Hull chipped past the hole, finishing a few feet short of where she had once putted for birdie.

“Wow,” Kaufman said on the broadcast. “I don’t like using the word ‘wow,’ but it deserved one there.” 

– Putt 2: From about eight feet away, Hull made this one, walking off with a quadruple bogey 9. 

She finished the day with a six-over 78.

Cricket Australia chief executive Todd Greenberg has said the board would be open to exploring the possibility of staging the landmark 150th anniversary Ashes Test in India, underlining the growing importance of the Indian market to world cricket. Australia and England are scheduled to play a one-off Test in March next year to commemorate 150 years of the historic Ashes rivalry. While there are no current plans to take the match outside Australia, Greenberg admitted the idea of hosting it in India could be considered in the future. His comments come at a time when Cricket Australia is expanding its footprint in India. This December, the Big Bash League will stage a match in Chennai, where Melbourne Renegades will face Perth Scorchers, marking another step in bringing Australian cricket closer to Indian fans. The prospect of an Ashes Test in India also reflects the commercial significance of the country’s cricket market. India remains the sport’s biggest audience, and hosting a marquee contest between Australia and England would generate enormous interest while creating fresh commercial opportunities. Greenberg said Cricket Australia would not rule out the idea, citing its strong ties with both the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). “We’d have to be open to consider all options,” Greenberg told the BBC’s Stumped podcast. “Our relationship with the ECB, but also the BCCI, is very strong. And clearly, there are opportunities in India to put more content into certain areas. That’s not something we are currently planning, but it would certainly be open for consideration.” India’s influence on the global cricket economy has continued to grow in recent years. The ECB, for instance, is expected to post substantial profits from the eight white-ball internationals it hosted against India recently, despite England winning six of those matches. The financial returns are expected to surpass what the board anticipates from staging both the men’s and women’s Ashes series next year. Despite his openness to the proposal, Greenberg acknowledged that scheduling a five-day Ashes Test in India would be far from straightforward. The Indian calendar is already packed with international cricket and the IPL, which is expected to begin earlier than usual next year to avoid the extreme heat towards the end of May. Finding a suitable window for another marquee event would therefore be a major challenge. “I think Test cricket between us, England and India, is still very strong, probably bucking the trend as to other parts of the world. So we want to make sure we continue to grow it and strengthen it. “The challenge for all of us in global cricket is there are only 365 days in a schedule, and we probably need another month or two if we actually can generate the content we want to,” he said.

LeBron James made it clear last month that retirement was not yet in his plans. The four-time NBA MVP said he plans to keep playing in 2026-27, but not with the Los Angeles Lakers.

Sixteen years ago, James placed his free agency at the center of a nationally televised spectacle. “The Decision,” a special tied to his work with the Boys & Girls Clubs of America, ended with James revealing he would leave the Cleveland Cavaliers for the Miami Heat.

James left Miami in 2014 to return to his home state of Ohio, where he ultimately delivered the Cavaliers their first NBA title in 2016. He changed teams again in 2018, joining the Lakers.

More recently, speculation has surfaced that James could be eyeing another return, this time to South Florida. Miami only fueled that talk earlier this week when it shared a since-deleted social media post linking to what was billed as the “LeBron James Introductory Press Conference.”

A Heat team spokesperson later told ESPN the purported livestream event was not legitimate.

“I haven’t read anything about, I haven’t spoken to (anyone about it). But my guess would be where there’s smoke, there’s fire,” ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter said in about the link in question.

“Had a text that said just be ready for LeBron to go to Miami. I can read you the exact text,” Schefter continued during a recent appearance on Philadelphia’s 97.5 The Fanatic. “‘I’m hearing Bron is coming to the Miami Heat, just want to give you a heads up. You may want to check it out.’”

Schefter pointed to a tip he said he received on June 30, when reports first surfaced that James would consider playing his 24th NBA season away from the Lakers.

Ryan Fox won his maiden major championship in impressive fashion on Sunday at Royal Birkdale, birdieing four of his final six holes, including the 18th, where he hit a masterful approach to 11 feet and then drained the putt to claim the Open title by a single shot over clubhouse leader Cameron Young.

One of the most notable details of Fox’s final hole was the way he wasted no time over his life-changing putt. In fact, it took only 22 seconds after Fox’s playing partner, Sam Burns, tapped in for his par for Fox to send his winning putt on its way to the hole.

On this week’s episode of Subpar, the newly-minted champ revisited his crucial 18th-hole moment with hosts Colt Knost and Drew Stoltz.

“While Sam was reading his putt, like, I’ve done all my work before Sam had hit his putt,” Fox said. “I make sure I’m ready to go when it’s my turn. So I’d read the putt, and I go over the back of the green there, like behind the hole, and it hit me at the time, like, I’m not going to repeat exactly what went through my head, but something along the lines of, ‘I’ve got a putt in the Open.’ And I almost lost it at that point.

“It was pretty overwhelming, and it was kind of like, how am I gonna hit this putt?” Fox continued. “And I just had to kind of get to the back of the green, stop looking at the putt, just go, hey, it’s just a putt. Take a couple of deep breaths, go look at it again, see what you see and try to hit it online.”

Fox said there was only one thing he wanted to avoid doing as he prepared to hit the putt.

“Walking into the ball, the only thing I didn’t want to do is be an idiot and absolutely gun it,” he said. “I wanted to try to make the putt, obviously, but you don’t want to lip out high side and have three-and-a-half feet to get back in the playoff. That wouldn’t be a lot of fun.”

Luckily for Fox, he didn’t have to worry about making a comebacker, because he delivered the ball into the cup, despite having what he described as very shaky hands.

“Didn’t have to go in the middle, it just had to finish in the hole. And it did,” he said. “My caddie Dean probably said the coolest thing to me a few hours after. We’re probably a couple of drinks deep at this point, he goes, ‘Foxy, you might only ever have one putt in your career, in your life, to win a major championship, and you just effin’ holed it.’

“I was like, yeah, I haven’t thought of it that way,” Fox continued. “I might never get that opportunity again, and I was pretty proud of myself to actually pull it off in that moment.”

WWE held a special edition of Saturday Night’s Main Event at Madison Square Garden on July 18. The show featured several matches and major crossover appearances from outside the professional wrestling industry. Now, a new report suggests that not everyone behind the scenes was fully on board with one major decision.

According to WrestleVotes on Fightful Select, several of WWE’s day-to-day decision-makers were “not exactly enthusiastic” about the level of New York Knicks integration throughout the show. The NBA champions were heavily involved throughout the broadcast, playing key roles in two of the night’s biggest moments. Karl-Anthony Towns first made his presence felt during Danhausen‘s match against JD McDonagh. The Knicks star got involved physically, delivering chokeslams to both McDonagh and Dominik Mysterio, helping Danhausen pick up the victory.

Later in the show’s closing segment, Jalen Brunson joined Roman Reigns in the ring. The OTC presented the NBA Finals MVP with a custom New York Knicks-themed championship belt, but the celebration was interrupted by their respective rivals, Seth Rollins and Indiana Pacers guard Tyrese Haliburton. A physical altercation then ensued. Although The Visionary initially gained the advantage, Reigns recovered with assistance from Brunson before putting Rollins down with a spear to end the show on top.

The report noted that WWE officials understood the unique atmosphere surrounding the Madison Square Garden event. The local crowd was eager to celebrate the Knicks ending their 53-year championship drought. Despite understanding the excitement, there was a strong internal feeling that the presentation “went further than many would have preferred.”

WrestleVotes also reported that a source spoke the day after Saturday Night’s Main Event and suggested that part of the internal reaction may simply come down to differing interests behind the scenes. According to the source, some people backstage are not particularly invested in sports, which may have contributed to the mixed opinions regarding the extensive NBA crossover.

Roman Reigns’ major WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event moment was Triple H’s idea

A new report has revealed that one of the biggest moments from Saturday Night’s Main Event was originally pitched by WWE Chief Content Officer Triple H.

According to Ibou of Self Made Sessions, Triple H personally came up with the idea for the show’s closing segment involving Roman Reigns, Seth Rollins, Jalen Brunson, and Tyrese Haliburton.

“Triple H had an idea for the show. His idea was, quote, ‘What if Haliburton went out with Seth and they just like tried to fight Roman and Jalen?’ And at the time when Hunter pitched this, people were like, ‘I hear you.’ And it ended up happening.”

With WWE SummerSlam around the corner, it will be interesting to see what other cross-promotional segments the sports entertainment juggernaut features on TV.
